Bulletin No. 188 - Maintaining The Productivity Of Irrigated Land, D. W. Pittman Jun 1924

Bulletin No. 188 - Maintaining The Productivity Of Irrigated Land, D. W. Pittman

UAES Bulletins

It is almost universal history that in farming a newly developed region no attention whatever is paid to maintaining the fertility of the soil. This is natural for two very obvious reasons. In the first place the pioneer has other and more pressing problems in the "subduing" of the new land, and in the second place such virgin soils are generally blessed with a great abundance of native fertility. New lands in an arid or semiarid region are usually especially fertile because they represent a long-time accumulation of fertility which is not possible under humid conditions. Since in a humid …

Forage Crops For Lambs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kuhlman

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The object of the experiment was to ascertain the value of different forage crops for the Iamb in the fall of the year when the pasture grasses become partially dried and the ewes lessen in their feed for the Iamb. The condition of the Iamb at marketing time is governed chiefly by the kind of feed it and its dam have received since birth of lamb, and anything that can be done to increase its growth and condition must be considered an advantage. We consider it a good practice to wean the spring Iamb in early fall when pastures begin …

Potatoes As A Feed For Fattening Pigs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kuhlman

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Many farmers of South Dakota who engage in the production of potatoes as a cash or market crop oftentimes have large quantities of cull or unmarketable potatoes at their disposal. In such cases much interest is manifested in the value of potatoes as a feed for livestock. Although potatoes have often been used for such purposes, very little experimental data is available for showing the feeding value of potatoes or the best method of utilizing them in rations for farm animals. In the early studies made to determine the feeding value of potatoes, no mention is made of the use …

Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris May 1924

Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has long been recognized that vegetables contain certain necessary substances which are essential to the human diet. Considerable attention has been given the different foods as to their economic value to human nutrition, however the information concerning the preparation of foods as to their nutritive losses is as yet inadequate. Considerable research work has been done in certain directions and some valuable data accumulated as to the economic losses contained in the waste or discarded portions of the food material. Several investigators have rather accurately determined not only the economic, but also the nutritive losses, especially those which occur …

Absorption Of Nutrients From Subsoil In Relation To Crop Yield, John W. Crist, J. E. Weaver Apr 1924

Absorption Of Nutrients From Subsoil In Relation To Crop Yield, John W. Crist, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Investigations of the development of root systems of native and crop plants have been pursued for a number of years at the University of Nebraska. The gradual intensification of this work has led to a type of experimentation designed to discover the nature of the activities of roots at great depths in relation to absorption of water and nutrients. In the present investigation the effects of absorption of nutrients from deep levels upon quantity and quality of yield were determined. Studies on the amounts of water and nitrates removed by crops from various soil levels were begun in i919, but …

Range And Pasture Management, J. E. Weaver Apr 1924

Range And Pasture Management, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Sampson's range and pasture management is an excellent example of the application of the principles of ecology to the solution of economic problems. In grazing experiments it is of equal importance to know what is happening to the stock and to the vegetation. This emphasizes the fact, which ecologists are coming more and more to recognize, that animals, both wild and domesticated, have a proper place in the environment and that they play an important role in modifying the vegetational development. This volume consists largely of first-hand information obtained by the author during fifteen years of intensive pasture investigations for …

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson Apr 1924

Critique Of Influence Of Mineral Manures Upon The Mineral And Nitrogen Composition Of Plants, Dan Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Variation in quality of plants of the same species has been known to exist for a long time. The influences bringing about such variation have been studied only comparatively recently. Quantity production has been given the greatest amount of attention as a rule, the beneficial results from the use of manures being judged by the quantity of produce. Some plants, however, varied so widely in composition, and the variations were of such paramount importance, that the influences affecting quality began to receive some attention. Of this type of plants may be mentioned sugar-beets and tobacco. There was also the hope …

Circular No. 50 - Brooding And Feeding Chicks, Byron Alder Mar 1924

Circular No. 50 - Brooding And Feeding Chicks, Byron Alder

UAES Circulars

Raising baby chicks seems a comparatively simple matter to some, yet there are more failures in poultry-keeping due to inability to raise good, vigorous pullets than to any other one cause. The number of eggs produced, the size of the eggs (within certain limits), and the profit made from a flock of hens is often determined very largely by the success in brooding the chicks and developing the pullets into strong, vigorous hens. Many who try to raise chicks are not successful because they fail to realize that a baby chick is a "real baby". They cannot survive with careless …

Circular No. 49 - This Public Domain Of Ours, George Stewart Mar 1924

Circular No. 49 - This Public Domain Of Ours, George Stewart

UAES Circulars

In Utah are somewhat more than fifty-two and a half million acres of land. Of this about five million acres are in farms, but only 1,371,000 acres, or 2.6 per cent, are irrigated. In addition there are about 344,000 acres under dry-farm culture, making a total of 1,715,000 acres of improved land. This leaves all of Utah's fifty-two and a half million acres, except about 3.5 per cent, to be utilized by some means other than crop-growing. There will be some addition of new lands not in farms and some development in unimproved farm lands, but when every development that …
