Carbohydrate Restriction-Induced Elevations In Ldl-Cholesterol And Atherosclerosis: The Keto Trial, Jonathan Fialkow, Ricardo Cury, Theodore Feldman

All Publications

Background: Increases in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) can occur on carbohydrate restricted ketogenic diets. Lean metabolically healthy individuals with a low triglyceride-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio appear particularly susceptible, giving rise to the novel "lean mass hyper-responder" (LMHR) phenotype.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to assess coronary plaque burden in LMHR and near-LMHR individuals with LDL-C ≥190 mg/dL (ketogenic diet [KETO]) compared to matched controls with lower LDL-C from the Miami Heart (MiHeart) cohort.

Methods: There were 80 KETO individuals with carbohydrate restriction-induced LDL-C ≥190 mg/dL, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ≥60 mg/dL, and triglyceride levels ≤80 mg/dL, without familial hypercholesterolemia, …

Development And Characterization Of A Gluten-Free Snack For People With Celiac Disease Using Plantain Flour, Alberto Antonio Tuy Pezzotti

International Programs

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder that leads to inflammation and damage of the small intestine after consumption of gluten. Around 1% of the global population is affected by CD. Consumption of 10 to 50 mg of gluten triggers the body to develop symptoms such as chronic diarrhea, abdominal distention, and even nutrient absorption deficiency from villi damage. A gluten-free diet is the ideal treatment for this disease. Manufacturers in the food industry have the task of assessing food product development to fulfill the nutritional needs of celiac people by providing gluten-free products that are good quality and can …

The Impact Of Social Emotional Learning And Trauma Informed Care On Teacher Well-Being And Capacity In The Classroom., Kathleen Kelley Michalowski

Theses and Dissertations

Educators and students have encountered significant challenges, including illness and loss within their families due to events such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Traumatic events, like disasters, can greatly disrupt a community's functioning, resulting in widespread losses that surpass the community's ability to cope. Trauma-informed care (TIC) acknowledges that individuals are likely to have a history of trauma and aims to respond appropriately to minimize the likelihood of further trauma. By implementing trauma-sensitive routines and promoting social-emotional learning (SEL) for both students and educators, we can offer them more opportunities for success and emotional growth. It's important to recognize that educators' …

Abstract

Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp. Rich) is a warm-season grass that is widely planted throughout tropical, sub-tropical, and even temperate climates, and it generally requires fewer inputs than most cool-season turfgrasses. In recent years, the area of adaptation for bermudagrass has progressively expanded to cooler climates due to the development of more cold-tolerant cultivars. The expanded area of adaptation as well as the reduced inputs required to maintain healthy turfgrass have made bermudagrass a popular choice in areas of marginal adaptation. In these areas, the greatest threat to bermudagrass health and survivability is winterkill. This management guide seeks to describe …

Polytetrafluoroethylene (Ptfe) Vs. Ptfe-Free Coatings On Paper Label: Analysis Of Label Mechanical And Performance Properties, Chuqi Su

Theses

Post-printed water-based (WB) coatings, commonly known as aqueous coatings, have gained popularity for paper-based label manufacturing because of their environmentally friendly characteristics. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the common additives added to the WB coatings to achieve heat resistance and rub resistance properties for the final product. PTFE is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene, and is a category of Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS). As of January 2024, the sale of food packaging containing PFAS is prohibited in the state of Minnesota, with expectations that this regulation will extend to other states because of the proven harm of PFAS to both humans …

Paleo Environment And Archaeology Provide Cautionary Tales For Climate Policymakers, Brett Kaufman, Christopher S. Kelly, Richard S. Vachula

The Geographical Bulletin

Federal climate policy in the United States is still in its infancy and is in large part characterized by efforts to reach a consensus on the very existence and causality of climate change. This has stemmed from a sociopolitical rift within the country, with the objectivity and usefulness of science attacked by detractors. Scientists who are most qualified to defend their methods and provide information to policymakers rarely have an institutional incentive to share this knowledge, but should be encouraged to communicate their findings to the public, especially those who receive public funding. By not doing so, they are effectively …

Natural Killer Cell Effector Function Is Critical For Host Defense Against Alcohol-Associated Bacterial Pneumonia, Daniel Villageliu, Kelly C. Cunningham, Deandra R. Smith, Daren L. Knoell, Mason Mandolfo, Todd A. Wyatt, Derrick R. Samuelson

Food for Health: Publications

Alcohol use is an independent risk factor for the development of bacterial pneumonia due, in part, to impaired mucus-facilitated clearance, macrophage phagocytosis, and recruitment of neutrophils. Alcohol consumption is also known to reduce peripheral natural killer (NK) cell numbers and compromise NK cell cytolytic activity, especially NK cells with a mature phenotype. However, the role of innate lymphocytes, such as NK cells during host defense against alcohol-associated bacterial pneumonia is essentially unknown. We have previously shown that indole supplementation mitigates increases in pulmonary bacterial burden and improves pulmonary NK cell recruitment in alcohol-fed mice, which were dependent on aryl hydrocarbon …

Plymouth Business School

Agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) need to become more sustainable, and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is a crucial enabler. However, various barriers make adopting I4.0 technologies to achieve AFSC sustainability challenging. Few previous studies have examined China's agri-food industry. Through a literature review and consultation of Chinese experts, we identify 27 barriers in six categories and prioritize these using a group-based fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to produce novel results. First, we identify six new I4.0 adoption barriers closely linked with China's economic, social and cultural environments, including acquisition of intelligent agricultural equipment subsidies based on guanxi. Second, our prioritization of barriers reveals …

An Evaluation Of Sediment Transport In The Columbia River Basin: Before And After System-Wide Flow Regulation, Patrick Alan Haluska Aug 2024

An Evaluation Of Sediment Transport In The Columbia River Basin: Before And After System-Wide Flow Regulation, Patrick Alan Haluska

Dissertations and Theses

Erosion and sediment transport are ubiquitous in every riverine ecosystem. Aquatic habitat eroded and sediment removal for infrastructure require deposition of upstream material to maintain morphodynamic equilibrium. A large percentage of total sediment transport occurs during relatively brief high flow events throughout the water-year. Dams are known to modify the ability for streams to freely transport sediment. Depending on the river size and dam type, downstream movement of sediment can be inhibited or completely eliminated. On the Columbia River, 14 dams are situated between the tidal-zone to the headwaters in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The main uses of the dams …

Terrestrial Salinization Impacts On Growth And Behavior Of A Common Detritivore Armadillidium Vulgare (Isopoda), Danielle Harmoney Orcutt

Master's Theses

Climate change and human activities are changing the nutritional landscape by increasing the availability of some essential elements and decreasing others. Sodium (Na) is an essential element in heterotrophs, which is required for water regulation, nerve function, and muscle function. Heterotrophs can acquire Na through diet and environment, often experiencing limited availability of Na due to plants concentrating Na 10-100 times less than heterotrophs need. The Sodium Subsidy-Stress (SSS) hypothesis posits that organismal performance follows a hump-shaped curve of a physiological response, where Na acts as a subsidy, increasing organismal performance such as growth until an optimal threshold is reached, …
