“Hey Girlie, Want To Sell Your Soul?” How The U.S. Can Counteract Predatory Cult Activities Through The Lens Of Fraudulent Business Schemes, Georgia Bronson

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

This paper investigates the parallels between predatory New Religious Movements (NRMs) and fraudulent business schemes such as pyramid and Ponzi schemes. By examining their recruitment tactics, psychological manipulation, and exploitation of economic vulnerabilities, this paper reveals how these organizations target socially and economically unstable populations for financial gain. The study proposes two strategic interventions: first, using the Social Vulnerability Index to develop proactive government responses, including targeted public service announcements and law enforcement education; and second, creating an IRS database requiring detailed financial reporting from tax-exempt organizations. The goal is to address systemic vulnerabilities through data-driven policy, increased transparency, and …

Discovering How Exceptional Female Native Americans In Contemporary Educational Contexts Form Sustained Motivation, Vellena V. Howard Sep 2024

Discovering How Exceptional Female Native Americans In Contemporary Educational Contexts Form Sustained Motivation, Vellena V. Howard

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This phenomenological study embarked on a journey with four Native American females to discover the lifelong and life-wide experiences that led to sustained motivation as evidenced through their extended careers in contemporary educational settings. Limited research exists on Native American-voiced perceptions surrounding issues pertinent to their success. A series of three life interviews afforded meaning-making of key moments, from earliest to current. A Two- Eyed Seeing approach centering Indigenous and Western knowledge systems viewed Indigenous motivation holistically through The First Nations Holistic Lifelong Learning Model, the study’s guiding framework. Influencing elements included teachers, mentors, experiential learning, and learning from self-revelation, …

Nitrogen Credits After Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea L.), Michael J. Mulvaney, Joseph E. Iboyi, Kipling S. Balkcom, David Jordan, Brendan Zurweller, Arun Jani

Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

State-level cooperative extension services provide fertilizer recommendations for row crops in the United States. Of these, nitrogen (N) recommendations are arguably the most important because N is the most common yield-limiting nutrient in nonlegume crop production systems. Throughout the peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) growing region of the United States, Cooperative Extension Services generally recommends 22–67 kg N/ha credit to crops following peanut, likely due to the assumption that peanut, being a legume, contributes N to the following crop. The body of peer-reviewed literature indicates that N credits from peanut to the subsequent crop are negligible. Recent literature indicates that …

Peritoneal Baclofen Pump Migration: A Rare Complication Of Subfascial Placement Illustrative Cases, Ashley Ricciardelli, Jordan Guntin, Joshua Korb, Daniel J Curry, Nisha Gadgil

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: The intrathecal baclofen pump is an effective treatment option for patients with severe spasticity. In children, subfascial pump placement is often preferred given concerns for infection and wound healing. However, this approach is not without risk, and rare complications, such as peritoneal pump migration, can occur.

OBSERVATIONS: The authors describe three pediatric cases of peritoneal pump migration at their institution over the past 14 years (3/545, 0.5%). All three patients had low body weight (below the 39th percentile), and two had scoliosis requiring surgery. All pumps had been placed using the subfascial technique. The first case occurred 6 months …

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disorder commonly caused by variants of the type I collagen genes COL1A1 and COL1A2. OI is associated with increased bone fragility, bone deformities, bone pain, and reduced growth. Setrusumab, a neutralizing antibody to sclerostin, increased areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in a 21-week phase 2a dose escalation study. The phase 2b Asteroid (NCT03118570) study evaluated the efficacy and safety of setrusumab in adults. Adults with a clinical diagnosis of OI type I, III, or IV, a pathogenic variant in COL1A1/A2, and a recent fragility fracture were randomized 1:1:1:1 to receive 2, 8, or …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The contribution of placental immune responses to congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) syndrome remains poorly understood. Here, we leveraged a mouse model of ZIKV infection to identify mechanisms of innate immune restriction exclusively in the fetal compartment of the placenta. ZIKV principally infected mononuclear trophoblasts in the junctional zone, which was limited by mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS) and type I interferon (IFN) signaling mechanisms. Single nuclear RNA sequencing revealed MAVS-dependent expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) in spongiotrophoblasts but not in other placental cells that use alternate pathways to induce ISGs. ZIKV infection of Ifnar1-/- or Mavs-/- placentas was associated with greater …

Nationalism And The Federal State’S Agricultural Policies; The Politics Of Cassava In Zambia, 1953-1963, Kaluba Jickson Chama

Zambia Social Science Journal

During the Federal era, cassava played an important role in political mobilisation in Luapula Province. Nonetheless, the crop has seldom received attention in the otherwise rich historiography on African nationalism and anti-Federation struggle in present-day Zambia. Drawing on archival sources and oral history, and a reading of secondary sources, this article attempts to contribute to the historiography of cassava in Zambia and its contribution to the nationalist cause. The article examines the position of cassava in political mobilisation by nationalist politicians. It explores the link between the politics of cassava and those of nationalism. This article’s key argument is that …

A Close Look At Kenneth Kaunda’S Life: Interviews With Those Who Knew Him Personally, Victoria Phiri Chitungu

Zambia Social Science Journal

Victoria Phiri Chitungu and her team conducted a remarkable series of interviews with people personally close to Kenneth Kaunda, along with Kaunda himself, and together these offer a different, more personal perspective on Kaunda’s life. The articles in this special issue primarily focus on Kaunda as a public and political figure and Kaunda as a real-life human being can sometimes disappear in this perspective. He was a symbol for many people, alternately revered and reviled. Chitungu’s interviews are different. Here, we glimpse into Kaunda’s personal life: the food he ate, the songs he sang, how he slept, and his family …

No. 01: Mitigating The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Migrants And Food Security In The Global South, Sujata Ramachandran, Jonathan Crush

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing vulnerabilities among migrants, particularly those involved in South-South migration, leading to heightened risks of poverty, food insecurity, and marginalization. The pandemic disrupted global migration patterns, hindered access to essential services, and severely impacted the livelihoods of millions of migrants. Governments in the Global South faced the dual challenge of mitigating these impacts while fostering inclusive recovery strategies. This policy brief provides recommendations for governments to address the immediate and long-term challenges posed by the pandemic on migration and food security, as well as planning for future pandemics. Key areas include enhancing social protection, ensuring healthcare …

Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The benefits of a proactive consultation-liaison psychiatry service have been well documented in the adult population, including decreased length of stay (LOS), increased satisfaction among physicians, and enhanced collaborative care. However, there is no available research on the effectiveness of this model in pediatric hospitals. Objective: This study compared patients aged 5–18 years on a general medical floor receiving a proactive psychiatry consult to concurrent controls receiving no consult and to historical controls receiving traditional reactive consults. Methods: New admissions to two pediatric general medical hospital teams were reviewed on weekday mornings to identify those with active psychiatric concerns. …

Climate change is increasingly affecting the world's ocean ecosystems, necessitating urgent guidance on adaptation strategies to limit or prevent catastrophic impacts. The Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (FishMIP) is a network and framework that provides standardised ensemble projections of the impacts of climate change and fisheries on ocean life and the benefits that it provides to people. Since its official launch in 2013 as a small, self-organized project within the larger Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project, the FishMIP community has grown substantially and contributed to key international policy processes, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment …

World Allergy Organization (Wao) Diagnosis And Rationale For Action Against Cow's Milk Allergy (Dracma) Guideline Update – Xi – Milk Supplement/Replacement Formulas For Infants And Toddlers With Cma – Systematic Review, Antonio Bognanni, Ramon Firmino, Stefania Arasi, Derek Chu, Alexandro Chu, Siw Waffenschmidt, Arnav Agarwal, Piotr Dziechciarz, Andrea Horvath, Rose Kamenwa

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Background: Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is the most complex and common food allergy in infants. Elimination of cow's milk from the diet and replacement with a specialized formula for infants with cow's milk allergy who cannot be breastfed is an established approach to minimize the risk of severe allergic reactions while avoiding nutritional deficiencies. Given the availability of multiple options, such as extensively hydrolyzed cow's milk-based formula (eHF-CM), aminoacid formula (AAF), hydrolyzed rice formula (HRF), and soy formula (SF), there is some uncertainty regarding which formula might represent the most suitable choice with respect to health outcomes. The addition of …

Increasing Access To Acceptable And Affordable Gluten-Free Baked Goods, April Litchford, Karin Allen, Cindy Jenkins, Eva Timothy, Paige Wray

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Transitioning to a gluten-free (GF) diet can be difficult due to limited reliable recipes to produce baked goods at home and poor quality of commercially available baked goods. This study tested basic recipes capable of creating acceptable GF baked products at home using commercially available GF flour blends. Recipes for a drop cookie, rolled cookie, bread, and pizza crust were tested and altered during this research to produce reliable recipes for GF baked goods. To assess the acceptability of these GF baked goods, products were tested for springiness, moisture content, hardness, height, spread, taste, appearance, and texture during in-lab testing …

A Midwest Perspective On Biochar Integration In Extension, Blake C. Colclasure, Elizabeth Bose, Jack Dempsey, Taylor K. Ruth Sep 2024

A Midwest Perspective On Biochar Integration In Extension, Blake C. Colclasure, Elizabeth Bose, Jack Dempsey, Taylor K. Ruth

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Biochar can be considered a climate-smart, agricultural soil amendment due to its ability to provide long-term storage of carbon. Research examining the impacts of biochar-enriched soils reported improved soil characteristics often leading to agricultural benefits, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Despite the potential use of biochar in the Midwest, United States, few studies have examined biochar in Extension. This study, guided by the Theory of Reasoned Action, used survey methodology to collect information on Midwest Extension agents’ (n = 125) knowledge, attitudes, and subjective normative beliefs toward biochar. These factors, along with agents’ demographics and perceptions toward sustainable soil amendments, were …

The Addiction Restriction: Addiction And The Right To Bear Arms, F. Lee Francis Sep 2024

The Addiction Restriction: Addiction And The Right To Bear Arms, F. Lee Francis

West Virginia Law Review

This Article is the culmination of a yearlong research project, and it is the first to address addiction and drug use in the area of Second Amendment law. I argue that addicts may be disarmed, if they are dangerous. My dangerousness test centers on illicit use and imminent danger. That is, do the facts and circumstances prove that an individual is in fact a danger? To put it another way, disarmament is appropriate when there exists demonstrable evidence that a person poses a significant and imminent risk of causing public injury. This Article develops and expands upon some themes and …
