We review the functioning and sustainability of coastal marshes and mangroves. Urbanized humans have a 7,000-year-old enduring relationship to coastal wetlands. Wetlands include marshes, salt flats, and saline and freshwater forests. Coastal wetlands occur in all climate zones but are most abundant in deltas. Mangroves are tropical, whereas marshes occur from tropical to boreal areas. Quantification of coastal wetland areas has advanced in recent years but is still insufficiently accurate. Climate change and sea-level rise are predicted to lead to significant wetland losses and other impacts on coastal wetlands and the humans associated with them. Landward migration and coastal retreat …

In Re Gardner: Withdrawing Medical Care From Persistently Vegetative Patients, John K. Veroneau Oct 2024

In Re Gardner: Withdrawing Medical Care From Persistently Vegetative Patients, John K. Veroneau

Maine Law Review

As medical science and technology progress, the distinction between traditional notions of life and death becomes increasingly blurred. Persons in dire medical conditions, lacking all cognitive and sensory abilities, may now be kept "alive" for indefinite periods of time. In the seminal case of In re Quinlan, a court was first asked whether it was ever legally permissible to withhold or withdraw life-preserving care from a persistently vegetative person. Since In re Quinlan, the courts of many states, including Maine, have confronted this issue. In In re Gardner, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, affirmed a …

Withdrawal Of Life-Sustaining Treatment: Patients' Rights—Privacy Rights, Patricia Lerwick Oct 2024

Withdrawal Of Life-Sustaining Treatment: Patients' Rights—Privacy Rights, Patricia Lerwick

Maine Law Review

As medical expertise and technologies improve, many patients who would otherwise die of their illnesses or injuries survive. For many of these patients and their families, the knowledge and therapies that save their lives are a blessing. Unfortunately for some, survival means not recovery, but rather a severely limited existence dependent on some form of life-sustaining treatment, such as a ventilator or feeding tube. For some of these patients, such an existence is not a blessing, but a curse, not a triumph over death, but rather a cruel prolonging of their dying. These patients, or their families, seek to have …

The pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) involves complex mechanisms, including immune dysregulation, gut microbiota imbalances, oxidative stress, and defects in the gastrointestinal mucosal barrier. Current treatments for IBD often have significant limitations and adverse side effects, prompting a search for alternative therapeutic strategies. Natural products with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties have demonstrated potential for IBD management. There is increasing interest in exploring food industry waste as a source of bioactive molecules with healthcare applications. In this study, a co-culture system of Caco-2 cells and PMA-differentiated THP-1 macrophages was used to simulate the human intestinal microenvironment. Inflammation was induced using …

Diagnosis And Management Of Shrimp Allergy, Brenda Bin Su, Warren Blackmon, Chun Xu, Christopher Holt, Nathaniel Boateng, Darren Wang, Vibha Szafron, Aikaterini Anagnostou, Sara Anvari, Carla M. Davis

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Shrimp allergy, the most common food allergy in the United States, affects up to 2% of the population. Its etiology is multi-factorial with the combination of genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. This review summarizes the latest diagnosis and management strategies for shrimp allergy. Currently, the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge is the gold standard for diagnosis. Moreover, mainstream and experimental management strategies include food allergen avoidance, the FDA-approved omalizumab, and oral immunotherapy. Herein, we emphasize the urgent need to develop more effective diagnostic tools and therapies for shrimp allergy.
