BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alcohol consumption and poor dietary habits are on the rise in the United States, posing significant challenges to public health due to their contribution to chronic diseases such as liver failure. While associations between alcohol consumption patterns and diet quality have been explored, the relationship between specific alcoholic beverage types and diet quality remains underexamined. This study aims to compare diet quality among consumers of different alcoholic beverage types. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1917 current alcohol drinkers from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) who completed a 24 h dietary recall survey. Diet quality …
The Predictive Relationship Between The Percentage Of High School Students Experiencing Homelessness And On-Time Graduation, Michelle Lee Wiggs
The Predictive Relationship Between The Percentage Of High School Students Experiencing Homelessness And On-Time Graduation, Michelle Lee Wiggs
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this predictive correlational study was to determine how accurately the percentage of students in Oklahoma high schools who graduate on-time be predicted by the percentage of those students who experienced homelessness during their four years of high school. The theoretical framework for this study came from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, resiliency theory, and grit theory. A bivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to examine predictive relationships between the criterion variable, percentage of students who graduated from high school on-time of Oklahoma high school students, and the predictor variable, percentage of youth experiencing homelessness (YEH). Archival data from …
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Self-Care And Fruit Of The Spirit In African-American Pastors: A Multi-Case Study, Rashon Wallace Dalton
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Self-Care And Fruit Of The Spirit In African-American Pastors: A Multi-Case Study, Rashon Wallace Dalton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The role of a pastor today involves spiritual duties, administrative tasks, counseling parishioners, and preparing and giving Sunday morning sermons. Moreover, African-American pastors who have churches in inner cities face additional roles related to race relations, social inequality, and lack of resources. Due to the incredible demands of ministry and leadership, a pastor’s maintenance of self-care strategies can become secondary to the people they lead. When self-care is put on hold, the demonstration of the Spirit’s work in the pastor— “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control”—may become overrun by feelings of stress and burnout. The purpose of …

Effects Of High-Intensity Interval Training Combined With Resistance Training On Functional Capacity And Clinical Risk Factors In Patients With Cardiovascular Disease, Philip Matthew Wilson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT), resistance training (RT), MICT combined with RT, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) have all been proven to provide clinical benefits for individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the effects of HIIT combined with RT on functional capacity outcomes and clinical risk factors outcomes in patients with CVD are not well investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this retrospective cohort study is to investigate the synergistic effects of HIIT combined with RT on functional capacity outcomes including six-minute walk distance (6MWD), peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), and metabolic equivalent of tasks (METs) and clinical risk factors outcomes including systolic …
A Phenomenological Study Of Pastors' Experiences Counseling Combat Veterans, Yvette M. Rolle
A Phenomenological Study Of Pastors' Experiences Counseling Combat Veterans, Yvette M. Rolle
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
When combat veterans make the transition to civilian life, whether permanently or between deployments, they face mental, physical, and spiritual adjustment (Grimell, 2019; Zogas, 2017). Although the Veterans Administration and local health providers offer services, some combat veterans prefer to seek their pastor’s advice instead or in addition (Bonner et al., 2013). Pastors, even those with little or no formal training in counseling or therapy, are uniquely equipped to guide combat veterans in the spiritual aspect of healing, or at least to accompany them with empathy and the consolation of faith. Yet a gap exists in the literature regarding clergy’s …
The Relationship Between Mindset And Motivation Among U.S. Army Soldiers, Fernando Llamoca
The Relationship Between Mindset And Motivation Among U.S. Army Soldiers, Fernando Llamoca
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study explored the relationship between mindset and motivation among U.S. Army active-duty soldiers. Implicit theories research was used to assess mindset, while the three psychological needs of self-determination theory (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) were used to assess motivation. Previous studies regarding these theories discovered that individuals with high levels of mindset and motivation experienced high job satisfaction, goal orientation, and organizational commitment. These theories were chosen due to the lack of research on each theory within the military context, specifically the U.S. Army. Over the past few decades, the U.S. Army has aimed to develop its soldiers holistically through …
Early Childhood Educators' Training And Support For Addressing Challenging Behaviors Of Students: A Phenomenological Study, Sonia Monica Sumner
Early Childhood Educators' Training And Support For Addressing Challenging Behaviors Of Students: A Phenomenological Study, Sonia Monica Sumner
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the training and support early childhood educators receive when addressing challenging behaviors. The theory guiding this study is Mezirow’s transformative learning theory. Many early childhood educators response to repeated challenging behaviors is to suspend or expel. This can be an ineffective strategy with many negative developmental trajectories for the future. This study explored the central research question: How do early childhood educators address repeated challenging behaviors from their students? The participants were early childhood educators from the state of North Carolina and were recruited using snowball and purposeful sampling. Data …
The Complex Relationship Between Tuberculosis And Hyperglycemia, Michelle Byers, Elizabeth Guy
The Complex Relationship Between Tuberculosis And Hyperglycemia, Michelle Byers, Elizabeth Guy
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Hyperglycemia and tuberculosis are dual global pandemics. Each has a propulsive and amplifying effect on the other, and, because of this, we must consider hyperglycemia and tuberculosis together. Hyperglycemia is immunosuppressive and increases the risk of tuberculosis by threefold. It also leads to a more advanced presentation of pulmonary tuberculosis, thus increasing the likelihood of being smear positive and having cavitating lesions, and it impacts the duration and outcomes of treatment, with an increased one year mortality seen in patients with tuberculosis and diabetes. Additionally, any degree of hyperglycemia can have an impact on susceptibility to tuberculosis, and this effect …
Vitamin D Clinical Relevance In The Recovery From Traumatic Brain Injury Among The Military Population, Yuisa Mariceli Colón
Vitamin D Clinical Relevance In The Recovery From Traumatic Brain Injury Among The Military Population, Yuisa Mariceli Colón
Theses
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) still remains a difficult disorder to treat. TBI has been associated to chronic neuroinflammation and a high risk for neurodegenerative disorders. Since 2001 between ten to twenty percent of all deployed military members have suffered a combat-related TBI. Nearly twenty to thirty percent of those will experience chronic cognitive, behavioral and somatic symptoms after suffering a TBI. This review found compelling evidence to support that the pathology of TBI is closely associated with neuroprotective mechanisms of vitamin D.

The term “offshore” with regards to aquaculture has hitherto encompassed various perspectives, including technology, geographic location, legal jurisdiction, and more. To resolve the ambiguity in this term and understand its implications for current and future aquaculture development, “offshore” should be resolved into two separate metrics: distance from shore and energy exposure. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) distinguishes between internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the high seas, but currently has no precise definition for “offshore” in its provisions, and therefore no applicable laws pertaining to “offshore” aquaculture. Investigating Secondary Metabolites Of Streptomyces And Bacillus Bacteria That Inhibit Colony Growth Of Pathogenic Potato Fungi (Colletotrichum Coccodes, Pythium Ultimum), Jacob R. Henrie
Theses and Dissertations
Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a crucial global food crop, yet its production is threatened by fungal pathogens such as Pythium ultimum and Colletotrichum coccodes, which cause significant yield losses and impact tuber quality. In this study, we investigated the antifungal properties of various Streptomyces and Bacillus isolates against these pathogens. The Streptomyces isolates, known for their prolific secondary metabolite production, were selected for their varying efficacy against these fungi. Despite the anticipated potential, Streptomyces isolates exhibited limited antifungal activity against Pythium ultimum and only moderate activity against Colletotrichum coccodes. In contrast, Bacillus isolates, particularly B1, demonstrated strong inhibition of C. …

Stress hyperglycaemia is common in critical illness. We have previously observed that increasing severity of respiratory failure in patients with severe COVID-19 is associated with increased insulin demand. Given previously reported direct effects of hypoxia on insulin action, we reasoned that rapid improvements in oxygenation following prone positioning may improve insulin sensitivity and increase risk of hypoglycaemia. A retrospective multi-centre service evaluation comparing blood glucose and insulin administration in patients with COVID-19 pneumonitis receiving prone mechanical ventilation, comparing the 16 h pre-prone and 16 h post-prone time periods. 155 patients were included in this analysis. Oxygenation improved significantly following prone …
