Motion sickness is associated with thermoregulation and metabolic control, but the underlying neural circuitry remains largely unknown. Here we show that neurons in the medial vestibular nuclei parvocellular part (MVePC) mediate the hypothermic responses induced by motion. Reactivation of motion-sensitive MVePC neurons recapitulates motion sickness in mice. We show that motion-activated neurons in the MVePC are glutamatergic (MVePCGlu), and that optogenetic stimulation of MVePCGlu neurons mimics motion-induced hypothermia by signalling to the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN). Acute inhibition of MVePC-LPBN circuitry abrogates motion-induced hypothermia. Finally, we show that chronic inhibition of MVePCGlu neurons prevents diet-induced obesity and improves glucose homeostasis …

Accurate And Automated Quantification Of Hepatic Steatosis And Iron Overload Using Mri Via Simulations, Phantoms And Patient Data, Utsav Shrestha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Hepatic steatosis and iron overload are common manifestations of diffuse liver disease. They can cause lipotoxicity and iron toxicity respectively via oxidative hepatocellular injury and can lead to progressive fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventually, liver failure. Over the past two decades, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a non-invasive tool to diagnose steatosis and iron overload. Multi-spectral fat-water models incorporating R2* correction have been proposed to simultaneously quantify fat and iron overload. However, there is still an ongoing debate on whether the multi-spectral signal model assuming same R2* (single-R2*) or different R2* (dual-R2*) for fat and water is accurate in …

Just Like Us: Mdl Is Eating Weedkiller, Andrew H. Paul
Georgia State University Law Review
The ingestion of an herbicide called glyphosate is currently unavoidable in America. It is the main ingredient of a consumer product called Roundup. People who regularly used Roundup have brought civil lawsuits against its manufacturer, Monsanto (now owned by Bayer), claiming Roundup caused their cancer diagnoses. Juries, particularly those in state courts, have awarded some plaintiffs massive damages awards. But jury trials elude most of the glyphosate plaintiffs who find themselves in federal court. There, the same can be said for nearly all products liability litigants. This is due to the procedure that has slowly come to dominate mass torts …

No. 39: Considering The Migration And Food Security Nexus In African Cities, Jonathan Crush, Zack Ahmed
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
International migration and food security are still treated as separate policy and research domains, yet they are deeply intertwined in the African urban context. This paper unbundles the nexus between migration and urban food security by examining how migrants and refugees navigate food systems, cope with vulnerabilities, and deploy resilience strategies to mitigate food insecurity. As rapid urbanization reshapes African cities, migrants are becoming actors in informal food economies, both as consumers and vendors. However, economic exclusion, weak social protection, and precarity often expose them to heightened food insecurity. The paper explores how migrant food security is shaped by urban …

While there is substantial literature on the effects of COVID-19 on formal businesses, limited evidence exists on the impacts of the pandemic on informal female-owned enterprises. Additionally, no studies have explored the role of post-pandemic recovery strategies in meeting the unique challenges experienced by the informal food vendors in secondary cities in the Global South. In this paper, we explore the impacts of COVID-19 and the post-pandemic recovery strategies on female informal food vendors in Kisumu, the third largest city in the western region of Kenya. The study adopted qualitative methods – in-depth and key informant interviews and focus group …

Climate change may transform peatlands from net carbon (C) sinks to C sources, which could result in a positive feedback to global warming. Warmer temperatures might lower water tables, increase the abundance of shrubs, slow Sphagnum and sedge growth and further accelerate the decomposition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with a concomitant release of C from the surface. Studies in which vascular plant functional groups (PFGs) in peatlands have been manipulated to mimic the potential effects of a warming climate on DOM are scarce. In the subject study, seasonal effects of PFGs on the molecular composition of DOM of peat …

What’S Behind A Number? An Analysis Of Maternal Healthcare In Cuba And The Impact Of Policy On Women’S Autonomy, Brynn Urban '25
Honor Scholar Theses
The primary aim of this research is to contrast personal testimonies from birthing women in Cuba with the frequently boasted Cuban health statistics in order to illuminate important discrepancies existing between what is reported by the state versus the reality of individual experiences. Investigation into women’s personal testimonies of mistreatment within maternity homes and hospitals in Cuba will reveal significant disparities that exist within the socialist healthcare system that have otherwise gone unconsidered. In order to contextualize these lived experiences as products of problematic post-revolutionary ideologies, the political, economic, and social stakeholders in the Cuban healthcare system will be outlined. …

Background
Despite over 200 evidence-based dementia caregiver programs, we know little about the best approaches for optimally scaling these programs in daily service contexts, nor do we fully understand the most effective approaches of ensuring successful implementation. As a result, a small fraction of the many individuals living with dementia and their caregivers within in the US have access to evidence-based programs. A leading barrier to implementation of evidence-based dementia caregiver support programs into long-term care settings is the lack of streamlined, scalable, user-friendly, and tested training modalities. Objective

Understanding Strain-Level Dynamics In Gut Commensal-Pathogen-Host Interactions, Anna Louise Deveaux
Understanding Strain-Level Dynamics In Gut Commensal-Pathogen-Host Interactions, Anna Louise Deveaux
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The human gut microbiome is a consortium of trillions of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses that colonizes the gastrointestinal tract and promotes health under homeostatic conditions. This microbial community trains the immune system, modulates inflammation and anticancer immunity, promotes cardiometabolic health, enables nutrient extraction, and prevents pathogen overgrowth. The latter function manifests through colonization resistance, in which microbes occupy spatial and nutritional niches thereby excluding pathogens from the community entirely, and through limiting pathogen population growth if colonization occurs. These roles are facilitated by complex host-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions that underlie differences in susceptibility to microbiome-mediated infectious diseases. The strain-level …

Perspectives Of Probation Officers On Training To Support Women Who Commit Co-Occurring Crimes, Cynthia Stephens
Perspectives Of Probation Officers On Training To Support Women Who Commit Co-Occurring Crimes, Cynthia Stephens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The lack of understanding about probation officers’ (POs’) training views, especially concerning female offenders, reduces training and reentry effectiveness for female criminals. This study investigated POs’ perspectives on their training to assist women with co-occurring offenses by developing a practical intervention framework to improve reentry outcomes. The labeling and dual-role relationship theories served as the theoretical foundation to answer the research question, which involved identifying the perspectives of POs on training to support women with co-occurring crimes. A phenomenological design and in-depth face-to-face PO interviews were appropriate to answer the research question. Thematic analysis occurred to identify key concepts revealed …

A Woman's Place In Politics: The Effects Of Gendered Politics On A Global Level, Aruhi Kodeboyina
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Women have been denied equality, especially with respect to their male counterparts. Feminism is the theory that seeks to explain this by the norms, beliefs, and societal pressure by which women have been excluded. One predominant realm in which women have been excluded is politics. Although there has been a rise in female politicians across the world, they continue to face the same stereotypes as before. Thus, this study delves into the implications of having more female leaders, looking more specifically at liberal feminist international relations theory. By reviewing literature, this study finds that female leaders impact a variety of …

Assessing The Gaps Between Ethnic Populations: A Comparison Of Lipid-Lowering Interventions , Chasen Hershman, Gavin Lamott, Chester Dejong Md
Celebration of Research
Pharmacological and lifestyle interventions have been a proven strategy for lowering the cardiovascular risk in all populations. Despite this, certain ethnic populations have a greater ASCVD risk due to either high LDL levels or other factors. The goal of this review is to analyze variables (specifically LDL) that contribute to certain ethnic populations demonstrating a greater risk of CVD as well as interventions that can improve outcomes. Treatment of hyperlipidemia requires a multifactorial approach which is tailored to the individual patients’ needs. Statins continue to be first-line pharmacological therapy for the treatment of lowering LDL. When combining a healthy diet …

Celebration of Research
Subcutaneous (SC) infusions deliver fluids or medications into the body's fatty tissue using small needles. They are cost-effective, easy to use, comfortable, and carry a low risk of serious complications like infections. In hospital settings, IV access can be challenging, and oral fluid intake may be insufficient for proper hydration. Spencer Hospital was interested in the potential benefits of SC infusions and what population would benefit most. The purpose of this project was to examine SC infusions as an alternative for hydration when IV access is unavailable, focusing on pediatric, geriatric, and palliative population. It compared Hydration, nutrition status, and …
