Case Report: Dysphagia In Inclusion Body Myositis Leading To Respiratory And Gastrointestinal Complications, Veroneka Mikhail, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Inclusion body Myositis (IBM) stands as a rare and complex neuromuscular disorder (NMD) characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. Among its cardinal symptoms are dysphagia and respiratory distress, which are the most common cause of death in this disease. While the differential diagnosis of respiratory distress is vast and includes aspiration, pneumonia, acute coronary syndrome, emphysema, and congestive heart failure, a clinician should recognize that respiratory distress can also be secondary to dysphagia in NMDs like IBM and can quickly become life threating. Here we present the case of a 68-year-old female with a history of IBM who presented …

Summit Disease: The Ecological Horror Of Empire, Nicholas Moore May 2025

Summit Disease: The Ecological Horror Of Empire, Nicholas Moore

Theses

This project focuses on the use of insect imagery in art and media and the theories and concepts that have been instrumental in understanding the cultural and political significance of insect species extinction and decline. I center my work on the concept of ecohorror and highlight several artists whose work depicts insect species and conveys anxieties over ecoprecarity and climate dysfunction. I argue that depictions of insects in art and media can be interpreted in two ways - insects as destructive, monstrous contaminants and insects as constructive, beneficial terraformers - and I rely on Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley …

Investigating The Effects Of Prenatal E-Cigarette Exposure On Postnatal Liver Histology, Emma Mcclellan

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

The electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) entered the American market in the mid-2000s and quickly became popular. This product poses a significant threat to youth with 1.63 million students reporting use in 2024. Adverse health effects to different organs are well known. The liver is less studied, and despite its role in detoxification of e-cigarette chemicals, is a target of injury. Unlike the known effects of cigarettes and nicotine on the liver from adult or prenatal exposure, effects of prenatal exposure to e-cigarettes on liver remain to be defined. The current study investigated the effects of prenatal exposure of e-cigarettes on liver …

Effects Of Cadmium And Diet On Metal Accumulation And Kidney Cell Death Pathways., Justin Xu May 2025

Effects Of Cadmium And Diet On Metal Accumulation And Kidney Cell Death Pathways., Justin Xu

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-biodegradable environmental toxin and accumulates in the body with an estimated half-life of 30-45 years. Humans can be exposed to Cd through diet, drinking water, tobacco smoking, and industrial pollution. Cd can especially accumulate in the kidney due to the release of Cd from protein-metal complexes when filtering blood in the tubules causing oxidative stress and inducing kidney injury. Obesity is another risk factor for kidney disease therefore we examined the dual effects of Cd and obesity on the accumulation of essential metals in mouse kidneys. Starting in utero and continuing until 24 weeks postweaning, male/female …

BACKGROUND: MicroNAPS, a classification for infants with Robin sequence (RS) intended to guide treatment decisions, consists of 5 elements: micrognathia, nutrition, airway, palatal clefting, and syndromes/comorbidities. Scoring of the first 4 elements is well defined, but the assignment of the syndromes/comorbidities score (S score) introduces subjectivity by necessitating judgment regarding the clinical impact of the diagnosis. A database of comorbid diagnoses associated with RS and consensus-based S scores for each is needed for the MicroNAPS system to be reproducible.

METHODS: Diagnoses known to be associated with RS were identified from existing literature, and preliminary severity grades were applied. A series …

School of Medicine Publications

An intussusception at the rectosigmoid junction with acute gastrointestinal bleeding is exceedingly rare. We present a case of an 88-year-old man who presented in the emergency department with bilateral lower quadrant abdominal pain and frank rectal bleeding for 2 days. A computed tomography abdomen pelvis angiogram with contrast showed a target sign, and a flexible sigmoidoscopy showed congested bowel, ischemia, frank blood, and intussusception at the rectosigmoid junction. He underwent an exploratory laparotomy with the removal of the affected part. The pathology and the peritoneal fluid cytology results came out negative for dysplasia and malignancy.

Participants were randomized to either a standard protein intake control group or a treatment group consuming a high-protein diet with daily lean beef.

The treatment group showed modest improvements in subjective sleep quality and perceived health compared to controls, although these changes were not statistically significant. Fatigue, however, significantly decreased in the treatment …

The Effect Of Antemortem Tooth Loss On Craniofacial Shape In Apes And Humans, Ashley R. Laster May 2025

The Effect Of Antemortem Tooth Loss On Craniofacial Shape In Apes And Humans, Ashley R. Laster

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) (i.e., defined as tooth loss occurring before death) is common among humans and many primates, and several studies have examined AMTL across various primate groups. Some research indicates that AMTL can influence masticatory function and diet; however, the effects of AMTL on craniofacial shape and biomechanics have not been extensively analyzed. We assessed craniofacial and mandibular shape in relation to AMTL, anticipating that individuals with at least one tooth lost antemortem would display significant differences in cranial and/or mandibular shape compared to those without AMTL. AMTL rates were evaluated in three primate species: wild-caught samples of …

Measuring The Work Of The Federal District Courts, Parth Sagdeo May 2025

Measuring The Work Of The Federal District Courts, Parth Sagdeo

Buffalo Law Review

The federal district court system is one of the largest and most impactful organizations in the United States. The nation’s ninety-four district courts resolve hundreds of thousands of cases, large and small, each year. Yet surprisingly little scholarly attention has been paid to measuring the work of the federal district courts—a vitally important task. It’s important because it affects substantive law; judges routinely decide the merits of issues based on how busy they think they and other judges are. It’s important because the law relaxes procedural protections—such as the Speedy Trial Act’s seventy-day deadline to bring criminal defendants to trial—if …
