An Undivided Heart: How Mary Unites What Sin Divides According To John Paul Ii’S Theology Of The Body, Ann M. Michalica

Honors Theses

Today, personhood is often threatened by the tendency to divide the human person into two contrasting parts: body and soul. Many times, this causes the human person to be reduced to a disembodied spiritual being or a disposable object rather than a whole person called to love and be loved. In his teachings known as Theology of the Body, John Paul II uses a personalistic approach to illuminate the human person as the integration of body and soul. Scripturally based, Theology of the Body is the study of God’s reflection in the human body and human sexuality. Using John Paul …

Discovering Jewish Studies Collections In Academic Libraries: A Practical Guide, Izabella Taler Mar 2014

Discovering Jewish Studies Collections In Academic Libraries: A Practical Guide, Izabella Taler

Publications and Research

The U.S. colleges and universities offering non-sectarian educational programs in Jewish Studies rely on the support of their academic libraries for research materials and library services. For college libraries which use Library of Congress Classification scheme, it is a common practice to integrate "studies" resources into their general library collections. Since Jewish Studies sources span a vast number of subjects within all major disciplines, shelving integration leads to the dispersion of all relevant sources and such dispersion in turn leads to a variety of problems for library professionals and library users. For collection development librarians the problems range from lack …

Has The Silence Been Broken? Catholic Theological Ethics And Racial Justice, Bryan Massingale Mar 2014

Has The Silence Been Broken? Catholic Theological Ethics And Racial Justice, Bryan Massingale

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This survey discusses the emerging contours of a distinctive Catholic ethical approach to race, racism, and racial justice. Among its features are the adoption of a more structural and cultural understanding of human sinfulness, engaged intellectual reflection, concern about malformed white identity, an intentional dialogue with African American scholarship and culture, and the cultivation of spiritual practices and disciplines. The “Note” concludes with a discussion of the global challenges of racialization and the future challenges for Catholic ethical reflection on racism.

Emerging Issues In Catholic Healthcare: Do No Harm?, Anna Tupper-Bridges Jan 2014

Emerging Issues In Catholic Healthcare: Do No Harm?, Anna Tupper-Bridges

Honors Thesis Collection

One in six hospital patients in America are treated at a Catholic hospital, and in the last three years at least 20 Catholic hospitals have merged with secular ones. Catholic-affiliated hospitals must abide by the United States Council of Bishops' Ethical and Religious Directives, and merged hospitals are frequently required to follow these directives. One of the core set of directives, having to do with "the beginning of life," do not allow any Catholic-affiliated hospitals to offer a range of reproductive services, including abortions, contraceptives, and sterilizations. As a result of mergers, formerly secular hospitals frequently have to adopt the …

Cura Personalis: A Healthcare Delivery Quandary At The End Of Life, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2014

Cura Personalis: A Healthcare Delivery Quandary At The End Of Life, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Holistic Medicine traces its provenance to the foundational value or chrism of the Society of Jesus of cura personalis which directs respect be given to all individuals and to their souls — especially whenever medical healing is required. Today, the notion of best patient care should include not merely attention to somatic issues of refractory pain management but, equally, to non-somatic or existential suffering. It is at the end-stage of life that palliative — as opposed to curative — care must be provided. When a condition is seen as medically futile, this Article advocates palliative or deep sedation — when …

Comrade Father Thomas Mcgrady: A Priest's Quest For Equality Through Socialism, Jacob H. Dorn

History Faculty Publications

The congregation of St. Anthony's parish in Bellevue, Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, was stunned on Sunday, December 7, 1902, when Father Thomas McGrady, its beloved pastor, announced his resignation. According to the fullest newspaper account, "there was bowing of heads, women and children wept." With great affection, the account continued, "almost all of the congregation lingered and crowded around their beloved pastor, weeping and pleading with him not to leave them." He told them he would remain in the community, "only not as their priest."

This account examines McGrady's decision to become a socialist, his experience trying …

How does one write an introductory text without being overly reductive, on the one hand, or unnecessarily bogging down the reader with finer points, on the other? Imagine trying to make a topic as expansive as Christian ethics intelligible to the ‘perplexed’ among us. Victor Lee Austin, Theologian-in-residence at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue (NYC), admirably navigates between these twin pitfalls in this useful and concise volume.
