The Leap Of Faith Exploring Social Workers' Role In Therapeutic Foster Care And The Impact Of Implementing The Strengths Perspective, Joshua M. Kent
The Leap Of Faith Exploring Social Workers' Role In Therapeutic Foster Care And The Impact Of Implementing The Strengths Perspective, Joshua M. Kent
Theses and Graduate Projects
The strengths perspective has received significant attention in recent years in both academic and practice settings. Examining its implementation will provide important information about how it can function as a practice model, and therefore facilitate the development of this emergent model. The present study focuses on the implementation of a pilot project designed to incorporate the strengths perspective in therapeutic foster care. The study examines how the strengths perspective affects social workers' roles and responsibilities in therapeutic foster care, and what can be learned about the strengths perspective by examining its implementation in an agency setting. The findings show that …

Since the late 1800s land-use planning in America has existed to separate manufacturing, commercial, residential, and agricultural activities to “encourage orderly management into the building and maintenance of cities. One of the first examples of regulating the location of urban land-use activities occurred in New York City. In 1916 a group of prosperous Fifth Avenue merchants wanted to halt the encroachment of Lower Manhattan garment manufacturers to the Upper East Side. The Fifth Avenue Association claimed that such loft buildings would “ruin the ambiance of the streets for their customers”^ by intruding on the residential neighborhood and impacting the property …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Winston Seegobin
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Winston Seegobin
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Excerpt: "Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological disorder precipitated by exposure to a traumatic event or a series of events. This event is usually experienced by an individual. However, PTSD can also develop as a result of observing or hearing of a traumatic event occurring in someone else's life (such as a relative or a close friend). PTSD was introduced as a disorder in 1980 in the DSM-III. The DSM-Ill-R's condition for diagnosis was the experiencing of a traumatic event that was "outside the range of usual human experience." However, in DSM-IV, the focus is not so much on …

Organizational Structures For Community Engagement, Sharon Singleton, Deborah Hirsch, Cathy Burack
Organizational Structures For Community Engagement, Sharon Singleton, Deborah Hirsch, Cathy Burack
New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications
In a time of public scrutiny of higher education, there is good reason - both for the survival of the campus and the survival of the community around it -- for institutions to promote outreach. Yet even within those institutions with formal structures -- mission statements, faculty handbooks, and presidential leadership that support community service -- the practical considerations -- work assignments, evaluation mechanisms and institutional rewards -- present real challenges. Service-enclaves are structures that exist or are developed within institutions that allow faculty and staff to work collectively as they serve their communities. While individual service work is no …

Vincent De Paul's View Of Common Life In The Congregation Of The Mission, Douglas Slawson C.M.
Vincent De Paul's View Of Common Life In The Congregation Of The Mission, Douglas Slawson C.M.
Vincentian Studies
For Vincent de Paul, community life enabled the Congregation to follow Jesus’s example, both in the work of evangelization and in the development of Christlike virtues that supported the work. To be effective missionaries—to travel and to share the life of the poor while evangelizing them—confreres were to embrace poverty. They also were to model Christian behavior for others by demonstrating it among themselves; this was accomplished through the virtues of uniformity, patience, and fraternal charity. Uniformity meant that the confreres were to have the same judgments and practice. Patience called for the tolerance of each other’s faults and the …

A Top-Down Performance Analysis Of A Pegasus-Based Space Strike System, Douglas E. Collins
A Top-Down Performance Analysis Of A Pegasus-Based Space Strike System, Douglas E. Collins
Theses and Dissertations
The feasibility of using Pegasus launch vehicle as a conventional weapons platform is examined. Using a top-down approach, the analysis addresses the fundamental question of whether such a system should be considered for development. The measures of effectiveness considered are delivery range, probability of destroying the target, and responsiveness. Each of the measures is assessed at its top-level and analyzed only to the level of detail needed to address the fundamental question. The study indicates that attaining a high probability of destroying the target requires extremely precise control over the burnout conditions and that the system must be on constant …

Choosing One's Family: Can The Legal System Address The Breadth Of Women's Choices Of Intimate Relationships, Barbara Cox
Choosing One's Family: Can The Legal System Address The Breadth Of Women's Choices Of Intimate Relationships, Barbara Cox
Faculty Scholarship
In discussing the legal system's response to alternative families seeking an extension of traditional family benefits, this paper is divided into two main sections. The first section summarizes the Madison experience in trying to pass a comprehensive alternative family rights ordinance. It takes an in-depth look at the entire process from the grassroots pressures on the M.E.O.C. which resulted in formation of the task force to the Common Council's enactment of two minor sections of the proposed ordinance. It will analyze the political and legal process used in an effort to obtain significant reform in the definition of family within …
