Design Of An Electrically-Propelled Asteroid Rendezvous Probe Launched As A Secondary Payload, Ralph Lorenz
Design Of An Electrically-Propelled Asteroid Rendezvous Probe Launched As A Secondary Payload, Ralph Lorenz
Small Satellite Conference
This paper summarises a design study undertaken as a final year project for the author’s B.Eng in Aerospace Systems Engineering. A spacecraft design is outlined for a vehicle to perform a rendezvous with a near earth asteroid after being launched as a secondary payload into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. The 380 kg (dry) spacecraft would use a bipropellant chemical propulsion system to manoeuvre in, and escape from Earth orbit. Interplanetary maneuvering would be accomplished with an ion propulsion system.
Drug Testing In The Public Sector, James R. Beal
Drug Testing In The Public Sector, James R. Beal
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to assess the nature and extent of drug testing in the public sector. Drug testing of public employees as well as private employees has been on the rise since the later part of the 1980s. This trend may continue into the 1990s and beyond.
Though drug testing may appear to be means to end drug abuse among public employees, it may not be the best means. In order to fully understand the current controversies sur— rounding drug testing, a detailed examination of available literature was conducted. There are many issues that must be considered …

Small Satellite Design For Inner Solar System Exploration, Walter Daniel, Commander Vernon Gordon
Small Satellite Design For Inner Solar System Exploration, Walter Daniel, Commander Vernon Gordon
Small Satellite Conference
This paper describes a study that examined using the Pegasus launch vehicle and small spacecraft for missions to the atmospheres of Venus and Mars. The launch vehicle can deliver approximately 820 lb (371.9 kg) into a 0° inclination circular orbit of 200 nm (370.4 km) altitude. With convential solid propellant rocket motors, a spacecraft of 73.8 kg (162.7 lb) would be delivered to Venus or Mars. A spacecraft using a currently existing 10 kW xenon-ion engine system with specific impulse of 3500 sec would deliver 143.4 kg (316.2 lb) to Venus or Mars. The spacecraft can fit inside the Pegasus …

Paper Session Iii-B - The Prospector's Proposal: Research Advancing Survivability Through Resource Options, Devin C. Walters, Howard Clark, Alex Cos, Matt Dubois, D. C. Conroy, Doug Fullingim, Wim Libby, Joseph C. Medlin, Vincent Reyna
Space Congress® Proceedings
As a group of nine Astronautical Engineering majors, we have identified a problem of great concern. It involves the scarcity of strategic materials and the possibility that our supply will be cut off. The Prospector's Proposal is our solution. This proposal involves a prospecting mission to the asteroid belt, specifically Ceres. Using heavy lift vehicles, we will put our spacecraft into orbit where it will be assembled. A nuclear drive will provide propulsion for the unmanned probe. A landing craft will transport a mobile unit to the surface. This unit will collect samples that may contain sufficient quantities of the …

Paper Session Iii-B - Potential European Involvement In The Us Pathfinder Program, Rudi G. Reichert
Space Congress® Proceedings
In conjunction with a long-range space programme planning also in Europe ideas exist for planetary exploratory missions, such as for Mars and the necessary infrastructure and technologies, required. Of course, this can only be realized in international cooperation as proposed by NASA with the pathfinder initiative.
Europe has been engaged in a number of unmanned scientific missions, some of them still have to be flown - such as Galileo, Ulysses, and/or Cassini - and further unmanned explorations of Mars will still have to be done as well as experiences to be gained on longer-duration stays of man in space before …

Paper Session Iii-B - A Lunar Orbiting Node In Support Of Missions To Mars, A. Butterfield, J. R. Wrobel, L. B. Garrett
Space Congress® Proceedings
Future Mars missions may use lunar-derived oxygen as a propellant for interplanetary transit. A man-tended platform as a Node in low lunar orbit offers a site for storage and transfer of lunar oxygen to the transport vehicles as well as rendezvous and transfer for lunar-bound cargo and crews. In addition, it could provide an emergency safe-haven for a crew awaiting rescue. A conceptual design study yielded an approximate size for the platform needed to support typical oxygen transfer rates which were based upon NASA studies of Mars missions. The Node consists of a gravity gradient stabilized lunar orbiting tank-farm with …

Paper Session Iii-B - A Transportation System For A Lunar Base, Andrew J. Petro
Space Congress® Proceedings
This paper will discuss the conceptual design of a transportation system for supporting a permanent base on the surface of the Moon, early in the Twenty-first Century. There is a brief description of a particular lunar base development scenario from which the requirements for the transportation system were derived. The lunar base concept was developed as part of the Lunar Base Systems Study at the Johnson Space Center.
The transportation system consists of a node in low Earth orbit, an orbital transfer vehicle (OTV), and a landing craft. The OTV provides transportation between Earth orbit and lunar orbit. The landing …

An Approach To The Design Of A Lightweight Lunar Spacecraft, G.E. Sevaston, D.H. Lehman, K.T. Nock
Small Satellite Conference
The Quicksat study, undertaken at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), had as its goal the development of low mass, low cost spacecraft that can be implemented within a relatively short time span. As part of this effort, JPL studied a lunar mission referred to as Lunar Prospector (LP). The LP spacecraft carries a spare Apollo gamma ray spectrometer (GRS) in a 100 km polar orbit about the moon in order to obtain a global map of surface composition. The primary mission objective is to search for water in the form of ice trapped within polar craters; this is viewed as …
