The Iss As A Launch Platform For Phenomena Of Interest, Phillip Anderson, Bryan Bingham, Charles Swenson, Chad Fish, Joshua Martineau Aug 2011

The Iss As A Launch Platform For Phenomena Of Interest, Phillip Anderson, Bryan Bingham, Charles Swenson, Chad Fish, Joshua Martineau

Small Satellite Conference

The lower ionosphere/thermosphere (150 to 350 km) is the boundary between the sensible atmosphere of the Earth and space. This region receives energy and momentum from both the sun (ultra-violet light and electromagnetic energy coupled via the earth’s magnetosphere) and the lower atmosphere (turbulent waves). These processes act as system drivers and feedback elements, but are still poorly understood, making the weather in this region unpredictable. Few observations of these processes and their coupling are available and no validation of the predicted fundamental neutral or plasma processes has been accomplished. Although almost immeasurable themselves, these atmospheric changes have very measurable …

The San Pedro Mission Village On Cumberland Island, Georgia, Carolyn Brock Jun 2011

The San Pedro Mission Village On Cumberland Island, Georgia, Carolyn Brock

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

The San Pedro de Mocama mission, located on Cumberland Island, Georgia, was the principal Spanish mission of the Mocama-speaking Timucua Indians from 1587 to the early 1660s. This paper describes some of the results of archaeological fieldwork and research (Rock 2006) completed at the mission village site, technically known as the Dungeness WharfSite (9CM14). (Figure 7.1).

Archaeologically, most mission studies have focused on the missions themselves, particularly on their churches, conventos, and kitchens. At the San Pedro mission village site, however, the church complex has not been located and may have been lost to erosion. Therefore, in the course of …

Solar Warning Architecture For Manned Missions To Mars, James S. Bohren, John K. Howard Jun 2011

Solar Warning Architecture For Manned Missions To Mars, James S. Bohren, John K. Howard

Theses and Dissertations

Solar radiation storms represent a dire threat to manned interplanetary space travel. Earth's current solar forecasting architecture is Earth-focused and insufficient to provide timely warnings to a manned mission to Mars, therefore a "best value" solar warning architecture must be identified. A total of 14 solar warning architectures were developed by varying 5 solar sensor locations, 2 processing locations, and 2 communications strategies. Using Satellite Tool Kit, performance of the candidate architectures in terms of Warning Time and Solar Coverage was quantified during a Mars mission scenario based on NASA's Design Reference Architecture 5.0. Cost of each candidate architecture was …

Spectral Characterization Of Venusian Surface Mineralogy, Johnathon Conley May 2011

Spectral Characterization Of Venusian Surface Mineralogy, Johnathon Conley

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

While the atmospheric chemical composition of the Venusian atmosphere has been characterized at length by probes and ground-based equipment, the surface mineralogy of Venus is not yet well understood. The extremely thick atmosphere of Venus shields the surface from direct observation. While radar imaging of the surface reveals surface morphology, surface composition is difficult to characterize at a distance. Observation is also difficult due to the intense temperature (approximately 480°C) and pressure (approximately 90 atm) found on the surface. This has prompted NASA and other institutions around the world to begin planning for new missions to land on the surface …

New Media In Missions, Mallory Barks Apr 2011

New Media In Missions, Mallory Barks

Senior Honors Theses

Throughout modern history, missionaries have communicated with people at home and with nationals through print and electronic media, including television and radio. Today, the emergence of digital communication technologies is changing the way missionaries communicate internationally, allowing them to exchange personalized information immediately.

This project explores how several of today’s missionaries utilize print, electronic, and digital media in the practice of their calling. This study bases its findings on the content of interviews with ten missionaries. Though their specific practices differ slightly, all use some or all of these digital media types for missional purposes on a daily basis. As …

Long Term Surface Power Generator Design For Mars: Autonomously Deployable Photovoltaic Solar Arrays Along With Regenerative Fuel Cell Modules, Omer Demirok

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis studies the feasibility of incorporating a large autonomously deployed photovoltaic solar array power system as the primary power source for a large fixed Mars base. A mission duration of 10 Earth years has been assumed and the nominal power demands have been specified as a minimum of 40 kW, during daytime operation and a continuous 10 kW. demand for nighttime operation.

The overall system design developed in this thesis has an estimated total mass of 7,400 kg, when utilizing hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film solar arrays and an estimated total mass of 5,100 kg when utilizing polycrystalline copper-indium-diselenide …

Dynamic Inversion And Backstepping Controller Robustness Analysis For A Reusable Launch Vehicle, Janet M. Coakley Mar 2011

Dynamic Inversion And Backstepping Controller Robustness Analysis For A Reusable Launch Vehicle, Janet M. Coakley

Master's Theses

The Air Force has been working towards developing technology for operationally responsive space (ORS), which is the ability to launch military assets into space without the long set up time currently required. Part of the solution to ORS is to develop a reusable booster vehicle capable of sending any vehicle into orbit, then descending back to the atmosphere and landing unpowered so that it may take another vehicle into orbit with a 48 hour turnaround time. Currently classical gain tuning techniques are used to design a controller for a specific mission, which may hinder the vehicle’s ability to perform multiple …

Edinburgh 2010: Mission Today And Tomorrow, Kirsteen Kim, Andrew Anderson

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

The centenary of the historic and influential World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh 1910 presented a unique opportunity for the whole church worldwide to come together in celebration, reflection and recommitment to witnessing to Christ today. Edinburgh 2010 also engaged in serious study and reflection on the current state of world mission and the challenges facing all those who seek to witness Christ today. The results of this research was presented and debated within the context of Christian fellowship and worship at the conference in June 2010. This record of that conference is intended to give the background to that …

Witnessing To Christ In A Pluralistic World: Christian Mission Among Other Faiths, Lalsangkima Pachuau, Knud Jorgensen

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

'Christian Mission among Other Faiths' was one of the Edinburgh 2010 themes. As part of the study process, position papers and case studies were invited from a wide range of contributors representing various theological positions, confessional traditions and denominational bodies. The quality of the studies and the variety they represent convinced us to publish in this form. The position papers are reflections on the theme by scholars belonging to Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Protestant-Conciliar, Protestant-Evangelical, Pentecostal, and Seventh-Day Adventist Churches. Among the case studies are articles on Christian mission among Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, new religious movements and folk or …

The Church Going Glocal: Mission And Globalisation, Tormod Engelsviken, Erling Lundeby, Dagfinn Solheim

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

'This book provides thought-provoking and inspiring reading for all concerned with mission in the 21st century. I have been challenged by its contributors to re-think our Gospel ministries in our new local contexts marked by globalization and migration. With its biblical foundation, its missiological reflection and interaction with contemporary society I warmly recommend this volume for study and pray that it will renew our passion for the Gospel and compassion for people'.

Mission And Postmodernities, Rolv Olsen, Kajsa Ahlstrand, J. Andrew Kirk, Tania Petrova, Teresa Francesca Rossi, J. Jayakiran Sebastian Jan 2011

Mission And Postmodernities, Rolv Olsen, Kajsa Ahlstrand, J. Andrew Kirk, Tania Petrova, Teresa Francesca Rossi, J. Jayakiran Sebastian

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Some may consider 'postmodernities' a Western dilemma. The contributions from some writers in the Global South (China, India and Korea) unfold a larger canvas and explore the implications for Christian mission. This focus on 'mission' is central: this is not just a book about the many facets and trends of postmodernities. It is a book about the implications for mission, for what it means to live as Christians and as churches in a terra incognita, in a world where we have not been before.

Evangelical And Frontier Mission Perspectives On The Global Progress Of The Gospel, Beth Snodderly, A. Scott Moreau Jan 2011

Evangelical And Frontier Mission Perspectives On The Global Progress Of The Gospel, Beth Snodderly, A. Scott Moreau

Edinburgh Centenary Series

As we reflect on the past century, then, the stories of the evangelical world church deserve to be heard. In this volume, we do not have space to even begin to scratch the surface. Being forced to choose an orientation, we collected stories and thinking related to the way evangelicals have idealized, operationalized and organized in light of the remaining frontiers of mission.

The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza Jan 2011

The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza

Theology Department Faculty Publications

For the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), the Holy Spirit appears to serve as a key in understanding and interpreting other religious traditions and how the Church is to relate with their followers. The Asian bishops consistently affirm that the Holy Spirit is actively present in other religions and that these religions contain expressions and practices that are inspired and prompted by the Spirit. This is why these manifestations of the Spirit’s presence demands critical discernment and that these must be in dialogue with the Spirit’s activity in the Church. In and through this the Spirit’s manifold works within …

Development Of Risk Uncertainty Factors From Historical Nasa Projects, Tahani R. Amer Jan 2011

Development Of Risk Uncertainty Factors From Historical Nasa Projects, Tahani R. Amer

EMSE Doctoral Projects

NASA is a good investment of federal funds and strives to provide the best value to the nation. NASA has consistently budgeted to unrealistic cost estimates, which are evident in the cost growth in many of its programs. In this investigation, NASA has been using available uncertainty factors from the Aerospace Corporation, Air Force, and Booz Allen Hamilton to develop projects' risk posture. NASA has no insight into the developmental of these factors and, as demonstrated here, this can lead to unrealistic risks in many NASA Programs and projects (P/p). The primary contribution of this project is the development of …

Unconstitutionally Male?: The Story Of United States V. Virginia, Katharine T. Bartlett Jan 2011

Unconstitutionally Male?: The Story Of United States V. Virginia, Katharine T. Bartlett

Faculty Scholarship

This article tracks the different views of gender equality reflected in United States v. Virginia, from trial through the various appeals, including the 1996 opinion of the United States Supreme Court, and through the actual integration of women into VMI. It highlights the fact that while many views of equality were represented in the case throughout its history, no party and no court addressed what is arguably the most objectionable feature of VMI, which was not that it excluded women, but that its "unique" pedagogical method was based on an explicitly demeaning and subordinating view of women.
