“I Know A Lot Of People Just Gave Up And Died, Out Of Loneliness”: Family Members Experiences Of Covid-19 Visitation Restrictions In Irish Nursing Homes, Emily Egan, Sarah Robinson, Erin Nic An Bhaird, Graham Gillespie

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact on older adults, particularly those living in nursing homes (NH) globally and in Ireland, the site of our study. Whilst NH residents were at increased risk of serious illness from the virus, visitation bans and restrictions also impacted residents' quality of life. Family members' (FMs) essential caring role was recognised in contexts like the Netherlands, parts of the United States and Ontario, Canada, but were not in Ireland. The current study explored the experiences of FMs of residents who experienced visitation bans during the first four waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland. Eight …

Impact Of Evidence-Based Interventions On Nurse Burnout Among Ambulatory Care Nurses, Haley M. Lupher Jan 2024

Impact Of Evidence-Based Interventions On Nurse Burnout Among Ambulatory Care Nurses, Haley M. Lupher

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: The physical and emotional demands of the nursing profession often cause increased stress and burnout in nurses. If burnout is not addressed, the negative consequences of burnout are perpetuated by one another. Evidence-based interventions, such as meditation, yoga, and physical activity can help reduce nurse burnout.
Local Problem: This project was completed at an ambulatory dermatology clinic that sees approximately 300 patients a day. In recent years, this department has noticed increased nurse turnover and low nurse morale.
Methods: A convenience sample from approximately 30 nurses was utilized. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Medical Personnel …

A Biblical Framework For Understanding And Responding To Ai, David J. Mulder Jan 2024

A Biblical Framework For Understanding And Responding To Ai, David J. Mulder

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This chapter is about developing a biblically informed, theologically sound perspective on what it means to be human in a world where artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be omnipresent and nearly omnipotent. Along the way, we will consider the history of AI, the current state of AI, and a biblical view of AI. However, to land in a place where we have some solid understanding of a biblically informed perspective on the role of technology, we need to begin with our own imaginations.

Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek Jan 2024

Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek

Journal of Strategic Security

Digital technology has impacted how strategic intelligence products are designed and distributed to political security decisionmakers. Information visualization helps improve the processing of intelligence information. This experimental study investigated whether a prototype digital intelligence report that uses visuals is processed more efficiently and results in a better user experience than a printed intelligence product that contains primarily text. A sample of 72 participants working as decisionmakers in a private company was divided into two equal groups. One group received the digital version of the report, and the other received the printed version. The time it took to read the report, …

A Community-Academic Partnered Approach To Designing A Virtual Village To Address The Needs Of Older Adults Living With Hiv, Annie L. Nguyen, Andrea N. Polonijo, Jerome T. A Community-Academic Partnered Approach To Designing A Virtual Village To Address The Needs Of Older Adults Living With Hiv, Annie L. Nguyen, Andrea N. Polonijo, Jerome T. Galea, Moka Yoo-Jeong, Jeff Taylor, Erik L. Ruiz, Karah Greene, Jasmine L. Lopez, Christopher Christensonf, Brandon Brown

Social Work Faculty Publications

Many older adults living with HIV face unique challenges, including comorbidities, loneliness, and isolation. This community-academic partnered study elicited viewpoints from older adults living with HIV about the characteristics of a digital environment (“Virtual Village”) to combat against loneliness and isolation. We utilized Choice-Based Conjoint Analyses to determine preferred attributes of a Virtual Village. We also conducted focus groups and interviews with older adults living with HIV and used an iterative, data-driven approach to systematically identify emergent themes. Participants (N = 82) were aged 50–82 years and racially/ethnically diverse. The majority were men (78%), gay (66%), and lived with …

Matching Markets And Labor Monopsony: A Comment On The Priest/Roth Debateeric A. Posner, Eric A. Posner Jan 2024

Matching Markets And Labor Monopsony: A Comment On The Priest/Roth Debateeric A. Posner, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In a neglected but prescient article, George Priest argued that the “unraveling” of markets for medical residents and judicial clerks resulted from the monopsony power of employers (a cartel in the first case, the government in the second). Because wages were largely fixed, early offers and acceptances of employment became an efficient form of nonprice competition—and efforts to solve the problem of unraveling through market design merely reinforced monopsony power. In a reply, Alvin Roth—the leading figure in the market design literature, who was instrumental in perfecting the design of the medical residency matching program—argued that Priest was wrong to …

Labor Market Trap, Eric A. Posner Jan 2024

Labor Market Trap, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Some products, notably but not only platforms, increase in value for users as the number of other users increases. These interaction or network effects can result in “product market traps” (Bursztyn et al., 2023) where people who use the product would be better off if they all stopped using it and switched to another product, but cannot because of coordination problems. A parallel but overlooked phenomenon is the labor market trap, where employees would be better off if they collectively left an employer, job, or profession, but cannot because of the difficulty of coordination. Product market and labor market traps …

The Common Political Foundations Of Originalism And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Jonathan S. Masur, Eric A. Posner Jan 2024

The Common Political Foundations Of Originalism And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Jonathan S. Masur, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and originalism are rarely discussed together, and seem to belong to different worlds of legal scholarship. The two methods are used by different institutions in different spheres of law for different purposes; what could they have in common? Nothing, or so it would seem. Yet closer inspection reveals surprising commonalities—both in terms of structure and function, on the one hand, and in historical pedigree and political economy, on the other. CBA and originalism are what we will call midlevel legal methods. Midlevel legal methods are neither normative commitments nor legal doctrines, but recurrently used methodologies that are …

How Much Does U.S. Fiscal System Redistribute?, Thomas Coleman, David A. Weisbach Jan 2024

How Much Does U.S. Fiscal System Redistribute?, Thomas Coleman, David A. Weisbach

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

There is a widespread view that the tax and transfer system has become less progressive and less redistributive. To assess this view, we compare data from three studies: Congressional Budget Office (2024), Piketty, Saez, Zucman (2018), and Auten and Splinter (2024). Although they use different definitions of income, units, and taxes and transfers, all three show that the tax and transfer system has become more redistributive, not less. We also review all studies of the issue since 2012, which confirms these findings. In short, there is robust evidence across definitions and methodologies, that the tax system has become more redistributive.

Cash Substitution And Deferred Consumption As Data Breach Harms, Lisa Yao Liu, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz Jan 2024

Cash Substitution And Deferred Consumption As Data Breach Harms, Lisa Yao Liu, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Federal courts have long been divided over whether consumers whose data are breached suffer an “injury in fact” that gives them standing to sue under Article III of the United States Constitution. Judicial opinions find no constitutional standing in a narrow majority of such cases, and plaintiffs are likely to lose absent causal links to subsequent identity theft or the disclosure of embarrassing information. Consumers whose data are breached thus are left without a federal remedy, and firms’ incentives to invest in data security are diminished. Our paper identifies a novel injury that results from data breaches. Upon learning about …

Constraining Constitution-Making, Adam Chilton, Cristián Eyzaguirre, David Landau, Mila Versteeg Jan 2024

Constraining Constitution-Making, Adam Chilton, Cristián Eyzaguirre, David Landau, Mila Versteeg

Articles

Whether constitution-making should be constrained has long been debated, but little is known about whether it is possible. We make several contributions to this question. We start by providing a typology of three types of constraints on constitution- making: Substantive, Procedural, and Institutional. We next develop a positive theory of when these constraints are likely to influence drafters’ behavior. We then use a mixed-methods approach to explore these ideas in the context of Chile’s constitutional reform process. In a survey experiment conducted in Chile before citizens voted on the draft constitution, we find that most respondents supported constraints in the …

The Doj And Ftc's Misguided Attack On Mergers, Richard Epstein Jan 2024

The Doj And Ftc's Misguided Attack On Mergers, Richard Epstein

Articles

This Article reviews two recent joint statements by the DOJ and FTC. The first was their request for information on their proposals to “strengthen” the antitrust laws on mergers. The second was the July 2023 release of new draft guidelines which were subject to many comments, often critical of the new regime. The difficulties with both documents start with the initial premise of their inquiries, which falsely posit that any “improvement” of the antitrust laws requires imposing new sanctions on private activities—when in many cases a relaxation of current restrictions may be best. But both agencies write as if the …

The Additionality Double Standard, James Salzman, David Weisbach Jan 2024

The Additionality Double Standard, James Salzman, David Weisbach

Articles

Carbon offsets are widely criticized for lacking additionality. The public debate, how- ever, has failed to recognize that the problem of additionality goes far beyond offsets. It arises any time the government subsidizes an activity. Programs with longer histories than offsets and far more money at stake offer valuable lessons for managing lack of additionality in offsets. The article sets out the current efforts to prove offset additionality, explains why major gov- ernment programs present comparable additionality challenges, and show why other programs’ problems of additionality are perceived as significantly different than those for offsets. We examine the toolkit used …

Sharing Where Bargains Are Impossible, Saul Levmore, Andrew Verstein Jan 2024

Sharing Where Bargains Are Impossible, Saul Levmore, Andrew Verstein

Articles

Cooperation sometimes breaks down, and former teammates will disagree about what happens next. For example, when can an employee quit to join a competitor? Courts often resolve disputes by looking at the parties actual or hypothetical bargain. Thus, a court may ask whether there was a non-competition agreement (and whether it was reasonable), or whether the employee is taking a “corporate opportunity” as she departs. These are all-or-nothing determinations by courts; either the bargain, or law, fully allows or fully prohibits the disputed conduct.

This is a suitable approach when fair and efficient bargains are possible. But, this article argues …

Private Security And Public Police, Ben Grunwald, John Rappaport, Michael Berg Jan 2024

Private Security And Public Police, Ben Grunwald, John Rappaport, Michael Berg

Articles

Private security officers outnumber police by a wide margin, and the gap may be growing. As cities have claimed to defund the police, many have quietly expanded their use of private security, reallocating spending from the public to the private sector. It is difficult to know what to make of these trends, largely because we know so little about what private security looks like on the ground. On one prevalent view of the facts, a shift from public to private security would mean little more than a change of uniform, as the two labor markets are deeply intertwined. Indeed, academics, …
