Scaffolding The Academic Writing Process, Jennifer Browdy Jan 2024

Scaffolding The Academic Writing Process, Jennifer Browdy

GHEA21 Open Educational Resources

In the AI age, it is essential to break down writing assignments into stages that can be assessed individually, so that as teachers we have an opportunity to intervene early if we see students getting off track in any way. This LAS Guide presentation will unpack the scaffolding necessary to guide students in producing high-quality writing in the humanities based on textual analysis, including: • Individual close reading and collaborative note-taking • In-class discussion techniques that require careful listening • Crafting both open-ended discussion questions and research questions • Research-based oral presentations • Collaborative and individual draft work, from response …

"A Liberal Arts Guide To Academic Writing In The Age Of Ai: Crafting Meaning, Empowering Students ", Tara Keenan

GHEA21 Open Educational Resources

The advent of generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) and large language models (LLMs) will require a sea change in how and what we teach students of all levels. Research strongly suggests that most university students are regularly using these in our courses, so it is incumbent on us to establish norms and best practices regarding their use, ethics, and literacy. This strengthening guide provides modular lesson plans for an advanced university-level English Composition course that focuses on the teaching of critical reading and writing as well as information literacy. This guide provides (i) practical lessons that address genAI and LLMs and …

Scaffolding Activities And Formative Assignments For Building Confidence And Success In Students, Dale Mineshima-Lowe

GHEA21 Open Educational Resources

This guide addresses the challenge of engaging students in their learning by focusing on creating learning activities that build foundational knowledge and skills. It emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, where activities are broken down into manageable "chunks" to support student development. The guide draws on pedagogical theories such as Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development and the concept of scaffolding introduced by Wood, Bruner, and Ross, as well as later contributions from Boice and Kellogg on scaffolding writing and thinking skills. The author reflects on personal teaching experiences, noting that student engagement is not solely about ability but also about fostering …

The Role Of Occupational Therapists In The Joint Commission’S Disease-Specific Care Certification Process: A Continuing Education Course, Addie E. Broom

Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Innovations in OT Symposium: Transforming Possibilities into Practice

Disease-Specific Care Certification (DSCC) from the Joint Commission is designed to evaluate, accredit, and improve healthcare facilities and/or clinical programs seeking certification in a variety of chronic diseases or conditions across the continuum of care. The Joint Commission DSCC process is often driven by nursing specialists and administration. Unfortunately, occupational therapy (OT) practitioners are usually not involved due to a lack of knowledge about the process. Once OTs better understand the DSCC procedures, they can facilitate an efficient, effective, and evidence-based monitored certification program because of their skills in research, collaboration, leadership, and clinical practice. Engaging with a national entity, …

Gender Regrets: Banning Abortion And Gender-Affirming Care, Margot J. Pollans, Noa Ben-Asher Jan 2024

Gender Regrets: Banning Abortion And Gender-Affirming Care, Margot J. Pollans, Noa Ben-Asher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article analyzes the use of “regret” in the campaigns to ban GAC and abortion. It identifies two overlapping threads. First, both campaigns against medical care point to protection of patients from future regret as a legitimate state interest justifying restrictions on providing medical care. Second, both rely on concerns about regret to redefine the legal meaning of “informed consent” and make it easier for potential future plaintiffs to prevail in civil suits against providers of medical care. In doing so, both treat the emotion of regret as a distinct injury that may give rise to a range of legal …

New Tech, Old Problem: The Rise Of Virtual Rent-To-Own Agreements, Carrie Floyd Jan 2024

New Tech, Old Problem: The Rise Of Virtual Rent-To-Own Agreements, Carrie Floyd

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

This Article explores how fintech has disrupted the traditional rent-to-own (RTO) industry, giving rise to new, virtual RTO agreements (VirTOs). These VirTOs have enabled the RTO industry to expand into the service industry and to markets for products not traditionally associated with rentals, such as vehicle repairs, pet ownership, and medical devices. This Article analyzes this development.

RTO agreements purport to rent products to a consumer until the conclusion of a set number of renewable rental payments, at which point ownership transfers. The fundamental characteristic of these agreements – and why they are not regulated as loans – are that …

Exploring Incoming Honors Students’ Beliefs About Online Courses, Kristy Spear, Pavlo D. Antonenko

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

This essay highlights the findings of a 2018 longitudinal mixedmethod explanatory sequential design study conducted at a large research institution with this purpose in mind. The study explored incoming honors students’ beliefs about online courses and how beliefs changed after the first semester of college coursework. Beliefs about online courses were deconstructed using the Community of Inquiry framework (Garrison, Anderson, and Archer 88), a questionnaire aligned with this theory (Arbaugh, Cleveland-Innes, Diaz, Garrison, Ice, Richardson, and Swan 135), and semi-structured interviews. The findings, highlighted in this essay, provide valuable insight into design and instructional strategies that support online learning and …

Online Faculty Professional Development And Community As Nexus, John Zubizarreta, Beata M. Jones, Marca V. C. Wolfensberger

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Our goal is to share ideas and experiences related to the design of dynamic, interactive professional development opportunities that focus on learning skills for managing remote or online teaching but more importantly that create a relationship-rich sense of community. Our Honors International Faculty Learning Online (HIFLO) model is a successful example in honors, but it offers reasonably adaptable strategies that can be used in future virtual professional development ventures inside or outside of honors. No matter what other topics may be addressed in later Honors International Faculty Institute (HIFI) or HIFLO seminars, the essential principle of community will always be …

International Virtual Exchange During And Beyond The Pandemic, Ian Mcintosh Jan 2024

International Virtual Exchange During And Beyond The Pandemic, Ian Mcintosh

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

The first goal of this chapter is to describe the virtual class. The second is to demonstrate just how easy such exchanges are when using technology such as the CN (Course Networking), which is like Facebook for academia. This software, plus the use of What’s App for free mobile calling, allowed students from both countries to get to know one another and explore course topics well beyond what can be delivered in a classroom setting. Finally, I will share information on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and some of the impressive discoveries made by the students in their respective …

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

The Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Honors College developed a multi-layered strategy to foster interpersonal connection and a sense of belonging among incoming students as well as continued opportunities for engagement among the entire community of scholars. Via social media posts and takeovers, peer mentor commitment, and virtual activities organized and led by students, along with more traditional face-to-face events, our new students developed connections, relationships, and a sense of identity as honors scholars. Our continuing students took on new leadership roles in the honors college, displaying their talents and contributing in ways they had not before in face-to-face formats. …

Before They Set Foot On Campus: Building A Virtual Summer Community For Incoming Honors Students, Laura G. Eldred, Gillian Wenhold, Jacquelyn Mcbride

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Discusses the launching of a brand-new program rooted in community creation during a pandemic, which meant that traditional modes of cohort building were not going to fly. That said, although the impetus was pandemic-specific, the lessons learned about the creation and value of virtual communities are not limited to one historical moment.

Lasting Lessons From Covid-19: A Story Of Successful Community Building, Christian Rubio Jan 2024

Lasting Lessons From Covid-19: A Story Of Successful Community Building, Christian Rubio

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

To state that the landscape of higher education has changed is an understatement. Strategies and approaches have been altered radically since the spring of 2020. After all, college and universities understood that they needed, as Glen Llopsis observes, a “process of reinvention, whether we like it or not. [Because] post-COVID-19 will not look like pre-COVID-19.” Many of these new strategies will undoubtedly become permanent fixtures because their aim was to foster a sense of community in our honors program. It is precisely some of these activities that this article will detail.

Transcending Distance: Connecting During Imposed Seclusion, Lauri B. Cockfield

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Although the world endured many losses because of the COVID- 19 virus, including missing the hustle and bustle of seeing and socializing with our students in person on campus, I am pleased with the way the honors college at Perimeter turned this challenging time into an opportunity to focus on and build the community our students and faculty have told us they want. We are now adept at archiving virtual events, and our practice is to seek permission from all our speakers to record and archive their presentations. Our plan is to track views of these recorded sessions so we …

Creating Virtual Honors Spaces With Discord And Webex, Trista M. Merrill, Ce Rosenow

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

Although Discord and WebEx are different platforms that lend themselves to different types of events, they are both useful for creating virtual honors spaces. They can easily be used in addition to other ways of reaching students, such as blogs and social media. Through these virtual spaces, students have an opportunity to gain information, hear guest speakers, and, most importantly, feel connected to their honors community.
