The transformation from authoritative to user-generated data landscapes has garnered considerable attention, notably with the proliferation of crowdsourced geospatial data. Facilitated by advancements in digital technology and high-speed communication, this paradigm shift has democratized data collection, obliterating traditional barriers between data producers and users. While previous literature has compartmentalized this subject into distinct platforms and application domains, this review offers a holistic examination of crowdsourced geospatial data. Employing a narrative review approach due to the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, we investigate both human and Earth observations through crowdsourced initiatives. This review categorizes the diverse applications of these data and …

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

The wording of self-report instruments likely affects its responses; however, there has been very little inquiry into the topic. The purpose of this study was to examine how items in a sexual assault experiences questionnaire varied based on pronouns (first person or second person) and order (sexual-behavior or coercive-tactic first) affected responses. College students (N = 979) were randomly assigned in a 2 by 2 between-subjects experiment to experimental versions of the Sexual Experiences Survey (SES). The findings indicated that the condition with second-person pronouns and coercive-tactic first phrasing had the highest rate of disclosure. Based on reading time …

Comparative Study: Critical Thinking Skills Of Western Philosophy Versus Non-Western Philosophy Students, Jhansi Chagalakonda

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number of non-western students migrating to western countries for higher education is increasing every year. They suffer from stereotypes and often perceived as non-critical thinkers. However, it is not the lack of critical thinking skills, rather it is the lack of understanding of the different approaches and different styles of practicing critical thinking skills by non-western learners. The purpose of this qualitative study was to compare the perception of critical thinking skills of students who studied Indian philosophy with those who studied western philosophy, and to understand the commonalities and differences in students thinking processes and the approaches adopted …

Exploring The Potential Of Openstreetmap Data In Regional Economic Development Evaluation Modeling, Zhe Wang, Jianghua Zheng, Chuqiao Han, Binbin Lu, Danlin Yu, Juan Yang, Linzhi Han Jan 2024

Exploring The Potential Of Openstreetmap Data In Regional Economic Development Evaluation Modeling, Zhe Wang, Jianghua Zheng, Chuqiao Han, Binbin Lu, Danlin Yu, Juan Yang, Linzhi Han

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In regional development studies, GDP serves as an important indicator for evaluating the developing levels of a region. However, due to statistical methods and possible human-induced interfering factors, GDP is also a commonly criticized indicator for less accurately assessing regional economic development in a dynamic environment, especially during a globalized era. Moreover, common data collection approaches are often challenging to obtain in real-time, and the assessments are prone to inaccuracies. This is especially true in economically underdeveloped regions where data are often less frequently or accurately collected. In recent years, Nighttime Light (NTL) data have emerged as a crucial supplementary …

How The Dissent In Sharma Opens The Door To Indigenize The Section 15(1) Charter Analysis, Alana Robert Jan 2024

How The Dissent In Sharma Opens The Door To Indigenize The Section 15(1) Charter Analysis, Alana Robert

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper explores how the dissenting opinion in R. v. Sharma opens the door for Indigenizing the analysis under section 15(1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It considers how the dissenting opinion creates a pathway for strengthening Indigenous women’s rights under section 15(1) by expanding the range of impacts considered when assessing disadvantage in the equality analysis. It argues that in a case alleging a violation of Indigenous people’s section 15(1) rights, the courts can consider the impugned law’s impacts on Indigenous laws, including Indigenous people’s roles under those laws. Any interference with these roles should be …

Hurricane Risk Perceptions And Evacuation Decision-Making In The Postvaccine Era Of Covid-19 In U.S. Coastal States Impacted By North Atlantic Hurricanes, Jennifer Collins, Elizabeth A. Dunn, Rashida K. Jones, Amy Polen, Nagashree R. Rao, Stephen Murphy, Mark Welford

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

During peak disease transmission in 2021, the compounding threat posed by the pandemic and hurricane season required coastal states to understand evacuation behaviors during a major hurricane to inform the planning process. While research relating to hurricane evacuation behavior and perceptions of risk has increased since the start of the pandemic, there is minimal understanding of how perceptions have changed now the COVID-19 vaccine is available. A total of 1075 individuals across seven U.S. coastal states participated in a study on evacuation intentions postvaccine availability. Findings revealed that most survey participants (50.9%) preferred to stay home if a major hurricane …

Limitations And Potential Dark Sides Of Transformational Leadership: The Case Of The Founder And Former Ceo Of Theranos, Wenjuan Guo, Junnan Cui, Lucy Arendt, Jamie O'Brien

Faculty Publications - Accounting

Transformational leadership is widely recognized as an effective leadership style; however, it is important to recognize its potential misuse, where it may serve a leader’s self-interests at the expense of others, both inside and outside the organization. In this article, we present an experiential exercise that uses the case of Theranos and its founder and former CEO, Elizabeth Holmes, to highlight the limitations and potential dark sides of transformational leadership. In this exercise, students watch three YouTube videos about Holmes, identify the characteristics of Holmes that match transformational leadership, and discuss issues with her leadership style. This exercise can be …

Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean Jan 2024

Dystopian Young Adult Literature As Waypoints To Censorship Across Time And Space, Shelby Boehm, Savannah Bean

Faculty Publications – English

We advocate for the reading of young adult literature (YAL) as a means for justice-oriented education, and we also recognize how the recent surge in challenges to youth-centered texts in the U.S. attempts to limit such work in classrooms. In response, we wondered about the ways in which YAL offers pathways for critically framing and situating global concerns, such as censorship, in time and space as a means of entering public conversations on issues. In this article, we offer waypoints as a critical reading framework for approaching sociopolitical issues in YAL as gateways for shifts in perspectives, orientations, and actions …

Subjective Costs Of Tax Compliance, Jonathan H. Choi, Ariel Jurow Kleiman Jan 2024

Subjective Costs Of Tax Compliance, Jonathan H. Choi, Ariel Jurow Kleiman

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

This Article introduces and estimates the “subjective costs” of tax compliance, which are costs of tax compliance that people experience directly and individually. To measure these costs, we conducted a survey experiment assessing how much taxpayers would pay to reduce the unpleasantness associated with filing a tax return. The experiment revealed that taxpayers are more concerned about inadvertent mistakes in their tax filings than the time spent on compliance. Respondents also only ascribed meaningful value to eliminating all tax compliance work; they ascribed essentially no value to marginal time savings. Additionally, taxpayers were indifferent between simplification services offered by a …

In Defense Of Pickering: When A Public Employee's Social Media Speech, Particularly Political Speech, Conflicts With Their Employer's Public Service, Abby Ward

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

With the rise of social media and the United States’ increasing political polarization, public employees take to social media to post about political issues such as race and policing. But when public employees make posts on political issues in an inflammatory or controversial way, public employers often discipline or fire the employee, fearing disruption and community backlash. The result is First Amendment litigation involving social media speech, an uncharted territory for courts. When a public employee is disciplined for engaging in political speech on social media, courts usually analyze the employee’s First Amendment claim under the Pickering balancing test. This …

Counseling Psychology

The usefulness of therapists' self-disclosure (TSD) in psychotherapy remains controversial, and little is known regarding the potential risks and benefits of TSD in times of global crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic and in teletherapy. We examined two independent samples of therapists (N = 1705; Study 1) and patients (N = 772; Study 2) on their perceptions of increases in TSD during the transition to teletherapy early in the COVID-19 pandemic (spring 2020). Approximately 20% of therapists and 14% of patients reported perceptions of definite increases in TSD. Therapists' top reasons for increased TSD were therapists' heightened distress …

Scaffolding Activities And Formative Assignments For Building Confidence And Success In Students, Dale Mineshima-Lowe

GHEA21 Open Educational Resources

This guide addresses the challenge of engaging students in their learning by focusing on creating learning activities that build foundational knowledge and skills. It emphasizes the importance of scaffolding, where activities are broken down into manageable "chunks" to support student development. The guide draws on pedagogical theories such as Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development and the concept of scaffolding introduced by Wood, Bruner, and Ross, as well as later contributions from Boice and Kellogg on scaffolding writing and thinking skills. The author reflects on personal teaching experiences, noting that student engagement is not solely about ability but also about fostering …
