Crowdsourcing Surveillance, Chaz Arnett Jan 2024

Crowdsourcing Surveillance, Chaz Arnett

Faculty Scholarship

In Unreasonable: Black Lives, Police Power, and the Fourth Amendment, Devon W. Carbado illuminates how both the spectacular and quotidian forms of racialized terror, brutality, and surveillance—characteristic of enslavement—have shaped the construction of our constitutional order. He argues that the combined social normalization and legal naturalization of racial hierarchy paved the way for the development of slave patrols and other early iterations of policing where incredible acts of violence against Black bodies were made ordinary and essential. He explains how this legacy continues today with Fourth Amendment jurisprudence not simply failing to protect rights but rather licensing police violence …

Avatar - Identity With Intent, John O'Connor, James Neville Jan 2024

Avatar - Identity With Intent, John O'Connor, James Neville

Conference Papers

We don’t often think of identity as a choice, but rather something we are born into by circumstance of birth and inheritance. This paper addresses identity by assertion. Virtual worlds afford the opportunity for a more fluid concept of self: identity with intent. Understanding this approach can empower our actions and results in the virtual and natural worlds. The authors draw on fifteen years teaching this topic in the virtual world of Second Life as part of a class on collaborative online engagement. The term avatar, representing the concrete embodiment of something abstract, originated in Hinduism in the 6th century …

Enhancing Proprioception And Regulating Cognitive Load In Neurodiverse Populations Through Biometric Monitoring With Wearable Technologies, James Hutson, Piper Hutson Jan 2024

Enhancing Proprioception And Regulating Cognitive Load In Neurodiverse Populations Through Biometric Monitoring With Wearable Technologies, James Hutson, Piper Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This paper considers the realm of wearable technologies and their prospective applications for individuals with neurodivergent conditions, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). The study undertakes a multifaceted analysis that encompasses biomarker sensing technologies, AI-driven biofeedback mechanisms, and haptic devices, focusing on their implications for enhancing proprioception and social interaction among neurodivergent populations. While wearables offer a range of opportunities for societal advancement, a discernable gap remains: a scarcity of consumer-oriented applications tailored to the unique physiological and psychological needs of these individuals. Key takeaways underscore the emergent promise of tailored auditory stimuli in workplace dynamics and the efficacy of haptic …

Autoportrait D’Un Auteur En Exil : Une Magie Ordinaire De Kossi Efoui, Morgan Faulkner Jan 2024

Autoportrait D’Un Auteur En Exil : Une Magie Ordinaire De Kossi Efoui, Morgan Faulkner

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Kossi Efoui’s sixth novel, Une magie ordinaire, constitutes his intellectual autobiography in that it follows the reconstruction of an “intellectual development” (Paul Ricoeur, 1995) by retracing his own trajectory as a writer in exile, born and raised in a dictatorship, forced to live the last days of his mother’s life away from her. This study explores the role played by private life, history, and literature in the reconstruction of the writer’s trajectory that unfolds in this novel. How do these three themes, and the discourses that accompany them, interact with each other to build the self portrait of an …

Dany Laferrière’s chronicles which make up Les années 80 dans ma vieille Ford (2005), are presented in the form of snapshots around situations and personalities that marked him in Haiti, and in North America where he took refuge in June 1976 (Montreal followed by stays in New York and Miami). He talks about colleagues from Le Petit Samedi Soir or intellectuals he portrayed in New York for Haïti-Observateur, with whom he crossed swords on more than one occasion. Throughout his work and up to the Petit traité du racisme en Amérique (2023), he participates in the genre of intellectual autobiography …

Everything You Need To Know About Aristotelian Rhetoric You Can Learn From Kendall Jenner And Serena Williams, Allison Wexler Weiss Jan 2024

Everything You Need To Know About Aristotelian Rhetoric You Can Learn From Kendall Jenner And Serena Williams, Allison Wexler Weiss

Scholarly Articles

Pop culture can teach us a lot about the law: almost everyone knows the Miranda warnings and can recite them by heart, thanks to Law and Order and other crime dramas, the concept of a “conservatorship” is familiar to many because of Brittany Spears, and the notorious RBG has become a household name, recognizable in a crown and jabot, partly due to Kate McKinnon’s portrayal on SNL.

Commercials, and the pop culture icons featured in them, can also teach students about the art of persuasive advocacy. At the start of the spring semester, when I segue from objective analysis to …

L’Autobiographie Intellectuelle De V. Y. Mudimbe Et Les Enjeux De La Différence, Justin Bisanswa Jan 2024

L’Autobiographie Intellectuelle De V. Y. Mudimbe Et Les Enjeux De La Différence, Justin Bisanswa

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Based on Les corps glorieux des mots et des êtres. Esquisse d’un jardin africain à la bénédictine, this text would like to analyze, at the confluence of sociology and rhetoric, the modalities (with their variations and their extensions) by which V. Y. Mudimbe broadens intellectual autobiography to other modes of writing and functions as a dialogic space between poetry and prose, experience and fantasy, reality and imagination. Retracing his pathway, Mudimbe makes his text a journey within oneself, a quest for the “absolute elsewhere” or a quest for the total Self. A feeling of lack emerges which explains this …

In this study of autobiography by French-speaking writers, we propose to construct a syntax for the genre, after recalling the great difficulty of tackling such a vast subject for so long. From then on, any study of autobiography implies confronting it with other related forms, such as essays, memoirs, autofiction, testimonies or diaries, all characterised by the assumed subjectivity of the “I” narrator, who recounts a life journey as well as a personal reflection on world events. The general idea defended here is that the grammar of intellectual autobiography presents itself as a narrative posture that needs to be thought …

V.Y. Mudimbe Et La Recherche D’Une Parole Pour-Soi : L’Essai Philosophique Aux Prises Avec L’Autobiographie : Vivre Et Écrire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi Jan 2024

V.Y. Mudimbe Et La Recherche D’Une Parole Pour-Soi : L’Essai Philosophique Aux Prises Avec L’Autobiographie : Vivre Et Écrire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article aims at two closely linked objectives : on the one hand, to show how the philosophical essays of V. Y. Mudimbe carry autobiographical sequences which complete or explain certain passages of his intellectual autobiography (The glorious bodies of words and beings) and, on the other hand, to question the stakes of such a rather singular practice in African philosophy. The basic hypothesis is that this practice is to be understood from an important moment in his intellectual development, namely May 68 and what has been called “La pensée 68” within which two antagonistic tendencies oppose each …

Chemical Strategies For Tailoring Properties Of Nanomaterials Produced By Pulsed Laser Interaction In Liquid Environments, Katharine M. Tibbetts Jan 2024

Chemical Strategies For Tailoring Properties Of Nanomaterials Produced By Pulsed Laser Interaction In Liquid Environments, Katharine M. Tibbetts

Chemistry Publications

Interactions of intense ultrashort laser pulses with liquid media and at solid-liquid interfaces produce plasmas with high densities of reactive chemical species that promote the formation of nanomaterials. This work discusses the current understanding of laser-induced chemical reactions in aqueous medium involving hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals, and the effects of chemical additives on these reactions. Two chemical strategies are presented for controlling the composition of the laser-induced plasma and nanomaterial properties. First, adding chemical scavengers of hydroxyl radicals will be shown to inhibit metal oxidation, enabling the synthesis of ligand-free Ag and Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles by reduction of Au …

More Than Just Her Black Bottom: An Exploration And Analysis Of The Legacy Of Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Zachary Brundidge

CSU Tower Day

The blues is a rich musical tradition based in the music styling of African Americans in the Deep South circa 1860. With origins in spirituals, work songs, and field hollers, the blues offers a glimpse into the lives and struggles of African Americans. One of the earliest pioneers in the blues was Columbus native, Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. Known as the "Mother of Blues", Ma Rainey left an indelible mark on audiences she performed for and musicians she worked with. However, when she passed away in her hometown of Columbus, Georgia, a local newspaper obituary listed her occupation as a "housekeeper," …

Ownership Of Social Media Accounts In Bankruptcy Cases, Garrity Kuester Jan 2024

Ownership Of Social Media Accounts In Bankruptcy Cases, Garrity Kuester

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Section 541(a) of title 11 of the United States Code (the "Bankruptcy Code") defines "property of the estate" broadly to include "all legal or equitable interests of the debtor in property as of the commencement of the [bankruptcy] case." Congress did not identify social media accounts as property of the estate under section 541(a)(1) of the Bankruptcy Code. Bankruptcy courts have generally concluded that business social media accounts constitute property interests. As such, these accounts often fall under the purview of the bankruptcy estate.

This memorandum discusses the courts’ analysis of the classification and ownership of social media accounts …

Cancel Culture And Censorship Effects Before And After The Introduction Of Social Media, Joseph A. Custer

Faculty Publications

Some people today view free speech as a threat to emotional safety and well-being. Cancel culture attempts to silence authors who express “unapproved” opinions by removing access to their works, publicly shaming them, and making attempts to destroy their livelihood. Cancel culture has been increasing, particularly on social media.

Health Sciences Research Reports

Many people seeking urgent care have injuries (a new condition involving pain, sprain, strain or fracture of nerve, muscle, tendon, joint or bones). They make up 8-9% of the people going to the Rockingham General Hospital emergency department. In 2022, a new model of care started at the hospital diverting patients with injuries from the emergency department to physiotherapy outpatients. A community conversation was held in June 2024 in Rockingham to explore the issues associated with seeking urgent and follow up care with an injury. Consumers attended and their perspectives were workshopped with researchers from the University of Notre Dame …

Department of Design and Architecture

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, posing significant challenges to the textile and clothing industry. However, amidst these threats, there is a unique opportunity to rebuild a more sustainable and resilient fashion industry. This paper explores the shift from pre-COVID-19 business models and consumption values towards a renaissance characterized by real sustainability. By examining the transition from eco-efficiency to eco-effectiveness and from cradleto- grave to cradle-to-cradle approaches, this study emphasizes the need for the active involvement of key stakeholders in co-creating value for all. Fashion Forward: Exploring Hong Kong Youth Perspectives Towards Traditional And Non-Traditional Media, Man Hin, Eve Chan

Department of Design and Architecture

Traditional publications, not only fashion, are gradually disappearing. To adapt to the evolution of technology, many publications have changed to online media or do not only retain traditional paper media but also create websites to publish articles simultaneously. For example, the well-known fashion magazines Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, COSMO, etc., have already operated websites to take the lead. However, some publications do not transform into online media, but instead, adopt other means to survive in this competitive industry. In recent years, Japan’s fashion magazines have begun to re-emerge. To attract readers to buy physical magazines, the publishers have attached attractive gifts, …

Looking Back To Move Forward: Shedding Light On The Dark Side Of Entrepreneurship, James Manuel Perez-Moron, Roberto Garcıa Alonso, Ulf Thoene

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Purpose– While entrepreneurship has long been heralded for its positive contributions, there is a growing recognition of its “dark side,” characterized by unproductive, unethical and destructive actions. This exploratory literature review aims to illuminate the underexplored dark side of entrepreneurship, thereby enriching the discourse on entrepreneurship’s dual nature.

Design/methodology/approach– This study employs a robust mixed-method approach, integrating phenomenologically detailed co-citation bibliographic coupling with detailed thematic data and code-weaving. Science mapping tools like R-Bibliometrix and VOSviewer enhance the credibility of the findings by providing a sophisticated and reproducible methodological framework.

Findings– This review defines dark entrepreneurship, its characteristics, and its complexities. …

Re-Examining What I Have Been Taught About Ruth And Naomi As An Asian And Asian American Woman: A Re-Reading Of Ruth Through A Postcolonial Womanist Lens That Calls Asian And Asian American Christians To The Ministry Of Reconciliation And Biblical Justice, Eunice Lin-Sawyer Jan 2024

Re-Examining What I Have Been Taught About Ruth And Naomi As An Asian And Asian American Woman: A Re-Reading Of Ruth Through A Postcolonial Womanist Lens That Calls Asian And Asian American Christians To The Ministry Of Reconciliation And Biblical Justice, Eunice Lin-Sawyer

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

As a Singaporean Chinese woman who only moved to America in middle adulthood, I discovered that one’s context(s) and the particularities of place and positionality significantly shape one’s reading and interpretation of Scripture. This thesis engages in a transnational reading of portions of the Ruth Narrative (RN) and exposes the hidden normativity of Whiteness and Eurocentric theology that has shaped how Ruth is interpreted within the Asian and Asian American Evangelical Church. It also explores the implications of taking seriously one’s social-religious contexts and developing a lived theology that accounts for one’s personal narratives, life experiences and embodied particularity. To …
