Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

This study identifies the role of communication technology in crisis management in Irbid Electricity Company from the point of view of its employees. A questionnaire was distributed to (150) individuals including engineers, technicians and administrators in the company. The findings show (81.3%) of the participants do not take lectures, seminars, and conferences related to dealing with communication technology and crisis management. Furthermore, the most severe crises facing workers is the frequent interruptions of electricity, such as the failure of transformers and the disconnection of lines resulting from the faults. The findings also indicate that each of mobile phones and social …

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign tumors that lead to significant neurologic and otologic morbidity. How VS heterogeneity and the tumor microenvironment (TME) contribute to VS pathogenesis remains poorly understood. In this study, we perform scRNA-seq on 15 VS, with paired scATAC-seq (n = 6) and exome sequencing (n = 12). We identify diverse Schwann cell (SC), stromal, and immune populations in the VS TME and find that repair-like and MHC-II antigen-presenting SCs are associated with myeloid cell infiltrate, implicating a nerve injury-like process. Deconvolution analysis of RNA-expression data from 175 tumors reveals Injury-like tumors are associated with larger tumor size, …

Nest/Ing Un/Methodologies, Jayne Osgood, Claire Walsh Jan 2024

Nest/Ing Un/Methodologies, Jayne Osgood, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

A dense, pungent, brown-green, intricately woven, itchy-silky, moss-strewn, twig- ridden ball brought us together.Since then, nest(ing)[i] has become a shared methodology - nest/ing has offered a praxis of getting to know each other, getting to know nests (better) and it has become a capacious writing methodology. Taking nest(ing) seriously has drawn into sharp focus the perils of human exceptionalism. Nesting has gifted opportunities to wallow in porous boundaries and to luxuriate in modes of liminal reading/writing/experimenting, informed by a feminist politics to imagine the world differently (Despret, 2016). It is through lively storytelling, involving passing patterns back and forth that …

Provably Detectable Sequence Generation From Ai Models Via Steganographic Embedding, Aubrey Alston Jan 2024

Provably Detectable Sequence Generation From Ai Models Via Steganographic Embedding, Aubrey Alston

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to produce machine-generated content with strong guarantees of detectability. Sequential content is generated by a generative artificial intelligence tool. The inference procedure used to sample content from the model is extended to provide cryptographic guarantees that the content can be detected to be synthetic. The sampling step that occurs during the generation of sequential output from a generative model is augmented with provably secure steganographic techniques. At each generation step where candidate tokens are evaluated for inclusion in the output of the AI tool, tokens that do not satisfy a cryptographically defined condition relative to previous …

Representing Historically Marginalized Communities In Archives: Moving Beyond Lcsh To Create More Inclusive Subject Headings, Melissa Ewing Jan 2024

Representing Historically Marginalized Communities In Archives: Moving Beyond Lcsh To Create More Inclusive Subject Headings, Melissa Ewing

The Information Warrior Journal

The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are widely used around the world in libraries and archives to add access points for users searching their collections. This can be problematic because LCSH has many embedded issues including inconsistency and complexity, the myth of neutrality that surrounds it, systemic biases, and how slow it is to change. These problems lead to poor descriptions of people, especially those who belong to historically marginalized communities. Archives can move beyond LCSH to create local thesauri, crowdsourced vocabularies, and collaborative partnerships with historically marginalized communities to create more inclusive subject headings.

Genrefication In Secondary School Libraries, Lindsay Pulsipher Jan 2024

Genrefication In Secondary School Libraries, Lindsay Pulsipher

The Information Warrior Journal

Most school libraries organize fiction books alphabetically by an author’s last name. In order for a student to find and compare potential fiction reading material, the traditional school library model would have the student either search the library system for the topic and then go from stack to stack looking for books about the topic from any number of locations or seek advice from school library staff who would direct the student to potential titles as part of a reader’s advisory. In an effort to make fiction book selection easier for students, some school librarians have turned to genrefied fiction …

My Co-Worker Is A Real Tool: Perceptions Of Human-Ai Teamwork, Travis Loof, Rachel Spinks, Lindsay Gagnon

Newhouse Impact Journal

This paper explores the evolving dynamics of Human-AI teams (HATs). The paper does this by examining the shift of AI from a mere tool to an active team contributor. Additionally, the paper surveys the concepts of mental models, schemas, and social norms in HAT interaction to understand human perceptions and expectations in these hybrid collaborations. Finally, the paper advocates for interdisciplinary research to enhance the efficacy of HATs, underscoring the need to navigate the intricate relationship between humans and AI in various contexts.

Who Will Watch The Watchers? Generative Ai Oversight In The United States: Navigating Policy And Self-Regulation In A Rapidly Evolving Digital Landscape, Adrienne A. Wallace

Newhouse Impact Journal

As regulators seek to keep up with the sheer pace of tech change in the AI space, it is likely that we will see a shift from high-level principles to concrete public policy with the public sector first. However, as is to be expected, the idea of self-regulation in technology-by-technology companies poses the obvious issues minimally presenting an earnest conflict of interest within the very process of legislation. Influential tech company voices in discussions related to AI regulations can’t be privileged over the rest of society’s needs or concerns. AI is revolutionizing various aspects of society, including employment and political …

In A Digital World Of Generative Aidetection Will Not Be Enough, Jason Davis

Newhouse Impact Journal

Recent and dramatic improvements in AI driven large language models (LLMs), image generators, audio and video have fed an exponential growth in Generative AI applications and accessibility. The disruptive ripples of this rapid evolution have already begun to fundamentally impact how we create and consume content on a global scale. While the use of Generative AI has and will continue to enable massive increases in the speed and efficiency of content creation, it has come at the cost of uncomfortable conversations about transparency and the erosion of digital trust. To have any chance at actually diminishing the societal impact of …

Acculturation And Immigrant Parental Perceptions Concerning Sexual Communication, Kwame Owura Frimpong Jan 2024

Acculturation And Immigrant Parental Perceptions Concerning Sexual Communication, Kwame Owura Frimpong

Journal of Human Services Scholarship and Interprofessional Collaboration

Abstract:

Acculturation presents challenges to many immigrant parents that are adjusting to new lives in the United States. The rationale for conducting this study stemmed from the effects that acculturation can have on the wellbeing of immigrants, adversely affecting their health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of Sub-Saharan African immigrant parents concerning having a conversation with their pre-adolescent children about sexuality and sexual practices. Findings revealed communication barriers due to cultural beliefs, cultural taboos, and shame. The findings from this study are beneficial to behavioral healthcare providers that work with immigrant families, parents, and …

Divisive Or Descriptive?: How Americans Understand Critical Race Theory, Alauna Safarpour, Kristin Lunz Trujillo, Jon Green, Caroline High Pippert, Jennifer Lin, James N. Druckman

Political Science Faculty Publications

Critical Race Theory (CRT) has become a flashpoint of elite political discord, yet how Americans actually perceive CRT is unclear. We theorize that Republican elites utilized a strong framing strategy to re-define CRT as an “empty signifier” representing broader racial and cultural grievances. Using a survey and a pre-registered experiment among U.S. adults (N = 19,060), we find that this strategy worked. Republicans exhibit more familiarity with CRT and hold more negatively valenced (and wide ranging) sentiments toward CRT, relative to Democrats. Moreover, compared to teaching the legacy of racism in schools, Republicans are significantly more opposed to teaching CRT …

Introduction:

Diets low in vegetables are a main contributor to the health burden experienced by young adults in rural communities. Digital health interventions provide an accessible delivery model that can be personalised to meet the diverse preferences of young adults. A personalisable digital vegetable intake intervention (Veg4Me) was codesigned to meet the needs of young adults living in rural communities. This study will determine the feasibility of delivering a personalised Veg4Me programme and compare preliminary effects with a non-personalised Veg4Me (control).

Methods and Analysis:

A 12-week assessor-blinded, two-arm, parallel randomised controlled trial will be undertaken from August 2023 until April …

Justice And Equity In Urban Water Allocations And Conservation Solutions: A Case Study Of Non-Traditional Housing Dwellers, Matthew J. Mangoni Jan 2024

Justice And Equity In Urban Water Allocations And Conservation Solutions: A Case Study Of Non-Traditional Housing Dwellers, Matthew J. Mangoni

Master's Theses

Access to water is a human right. With droughts becoming more frequent and severe, equitable and just access to fresh water is a critical concern for policymakers and regulators. Allocation-based (AB) water rates are used widely to incentivize conservation. Previous authors document benefits of this approach for single family homes (SFH) in urban areas. People living in homeowners’ associations (HOAs) or multi-family homes and renters – commonly grouped as non-traditional housing (NTH) tend to face barriers to understanding or controlling water use and costs. This thesis investigates the equity and effectiveness of 1) AB water rate structuring and 2) a …

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie Jan 2024

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a work of satire, in the style of the late Binyavanga Wainaina’s “How to Write About Africa” and Bright Alozie’s “How to Write About Nigeria” and “How to Write About African Women.” In this satirical homage, we explore the pesky stereotypes that often accompany Western perceptions and writings about African children. We hope that stereotypes satirically highlighted in this piece shed light on the dangers of a single story while advocating for the recognition of the humanity, agency, voices, and dignity of African children.
