Merit And Inequality: Confucian And Communitarian Perspectives On Singapore's Meritocracy, Sor-Hoon Tan
Merit And Inequality: Confucian And Communitarian Perspectives On Singapore's Meritocracy, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper compares criticisms of Singapore’s meritocracy, especially against its impact on income disparities and class divisions, with Michael Sandel’s critique of the meritocratic ethic in the United States. Despite significant differences in their history and politics, meritocracy has similar dysfunctions in both societies, allowing us to draw theoretical conclusions about meritocracy as an ideal of governance. It then contrasts Sandel’s communitarian critique of meritocracy with recent Confucian promotion of political meritocracy and meritocratic justice and argues that the Confucian principle of “promoting the virtuous and talented” is different from the contemporary conception of meritocracy. Textual evidence indicates that a …
The Affective Embeddings Of Gacha Games: Aesthetic Assemblages And The Mediated Expression Of The Self, Orlando Woods
The Affective Embeddings Of Gacha Games: Aesthetic Assemblages And The Mediated Expression Of The Self, Orlando Woods
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This paper argues that the motivations for investing money in gacha games can be a function of the affective embedding of players within the game, and the game within broader circuits of cultural affinity and appeal. Whilst research on gacha games – and the specific role of loot boxes therein – has emphasised their associations with gambling, I contend that affect is another trigger that can motivate seemingly irrational playing behaviours. The affective embeddings of gacha games motivate players to curate aesthetic assemblages of virtual content that enable the mediated expression of the self. Drawing on qualitative data generated amongst …
Crypto-Native Credit Score: Between Financial Inclusion And Predatory Lending, Nizan Geslevich Packin, Yafit Lev-Aretz
Crypto-Native Credit Score: Between Financial Inclusion And Predatory Lending, Nizan Geslevich Packin, Yafit Lev-Aretz
Cardozo Law Review
Decentralized credit scoring has surfaced as a new approach in the ever-evolving consumer credit space. While drawing parallels to traditional credit scoring, decentralized credit scoring sets itself apart by evaluating the financial activity and behavior of users within the blockchain ecosystem. Blockchain technology has been fueling this transformation and serving as the backbone for a diverse range of financial products and services collectively known as decentralized finance (DeFi). DeFi lending, in particular, has been thriving in recent years. However, the pseudonymous nature of blockchain, coupled with the inherent volatility of cryptoassets, has resulted in the absence of reliable means of …
Backdating #Metoo, Jessica K. Fink
Backdating #Metoo, Jessica K. Fink
Cardozo Law Review
The #MeToo movement radically altered the way that people think about workplace sexual harassment. For decades, women were expected to tolerate a broad range of sexualized conduct at work. However, the revelation of Harvey Weinstein’s misdeeds in late 2017, followed by the exposure of countless other bad actors, dramatically shifted the social narrative regarding appropriate workplace behavior. Conduct that employees once ignored or overlooked suddenly became the basis for vociferous objection; the perfunctory responses to harassment that many employers once adopted suddenly stood out as glaringly deficient.
While society has undergone great shifts in its understanding of and response to …
Whither Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing In New York? The Affh Mandate In An Era Of Land Use Reform, Timothy Gentles
Whither Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing In New York? The Affh Mandate In An Era Of Land Use Reform, Timothy Gentles
Cardozo Law Review
New York is experiencing a severe housing affordability crisis. This crisis is driven by a housing supply shortfall decades in the making. The state’s housing shortage exacerbates economic, racial, and regional inequalities, and harms the economy by limiting growth. New York’s struggles with housing affordability reflect a national surge in housing costs since the pandemic that has disproportionally impacted communities of color. Yet, in many respects, the crisis in New York is worse than that in other states with comparably robust housing demand. The extent of New York’s housing affordability crisis has led to growing momentum behind legislative action in …

The Art Of Artificial Intelligence Illusion: Exposing Digital Deception In The Hospitality Industry, Mohamed Youssef Helal, Mahmoud Ibraheam Saleh
Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
This study investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) tools influence deceptive digital practices within the hospitality industry. As AI capabilities such as chatbots and language models are increasingly used in the industry, their potential impact on deception warrants examination. A comprehensive review is conducted to analyze how hospitality businesses utilize AI tools and how this shapes deceptive behaviors online. Specifically, the review examines how AI-generated content may erode consumer trust and decision-making. It also explores the emerging use of machine learning to fabricate fake reviews and social media posts. As deception undermines trust in businesses and the industry, the effectiveness of …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Novel bioelectronic medical devices that target neural control of visceral organs (e.g., liver, gut, spleen) or inflammatory reflex pathways are innovative class III medical devices like implantable cardiac pacemakers that are lifesaving and life-sustaining medical devices. Bringing innovative neurotechnologies early into the market and the hands of treatment providers would benefit a large population of patients inflicted with autonomic and chronic immune disorders. Medical device manufacturers and software developers widely use the Waterfall methodology to implement design controls through verification and validation. In the Waterfall methodology, after identifying user needs, a functional unit is fabricated following the verification loop (design, …

The Role Of Chlorella Vulgaris In Reducing Some Pharmaceutical Wastes Toxicity In Clam Pseudodontopsis Euphraticus, Zahraa H. Obaid, Nuha F. Kadhim, Jasim Mohammed Salman
Baghdad Science Journal
Applications of microalgae in environmental studies have recently increased. Current uses of immobilized microalga Chlorella vulgaris include reducing pharmaceutical substances such as amoxicillin AMX and potassium dichromate K2Cr2O7 on freshwater clam Pseudodontopsis euphraticus as a biotic model. Recent research pointed out a change in biomarkers of oxidative stress in an evaluation of induced toxicity. Where clams were exposed to different concentrations100, 200, and 400 mg/L for 7 days and 20, 30, and 50 mg/L for 5 days of amoxicillin and potassium dichromate, respectively. The results showed that exposure to AMX and K2Cr2O7 led to a significant change in the activity …

Investigating The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Manual And Automated Driving: A Systematic Review, Miaomiao Dong, Yuni Lee, Jackie Cha, Gaojian Huang
Mineta Transportation Institute
There are direct correlations between drunk driving and car-related injuries, disabilities, and death. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) may provide useful driver support systems to prevent or reduce road accidents. However, AVs are not yet fully automated and require human drivers to take over the vehicle at times. Therefore, understanding how alcohol affects driving performance in both manual and automated driving is important because manual drives may offer insights into the takeover process in AVs. A systematic review of 53 articles from eight databases was conducted. Findings were categorized based on the human information processing model, which can be extended to the …
Understanding Workforce Diversity In The Transit Industry: Establishing A Baseline Of Diversity Demographics, Asha W. Agrawal, Evelyn Blumenberg, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Brittney Lu
Understanding Workforce Diversity In The Transit Industry: Establishing A Baseline Of Diversity Demographics, Asha W. Agrawal, Evelyn Blumenberg, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Brittney Lu
Mineta Transportation Institute
This study provides baseline data on the status of the racial/ethnic and gender diversity of the transit agency workforce in the U.S. and identifies potential barriers and promising practices for diversifying this workforce. Public transit agencies function best when the diversity of their workforce represents the communities they serve, yet previous research finds an underrepresentation of women and minorities in senior and managerial roles, along with an overconcentration of men and workers of color—particularly Black workers—in operational roles (e.g., drivers, janitors).
The study updates those earlier studies with newer data drawn from five discrete research tasks: 1) review of the …

Culturally Relevant Africultural Coping Moderates The Association Between Discrimination And Antiretroviral Adherence Among Sexual Minority Black Americans Living With Hiv., Glenn J. Wagner, Laura M. Bogart, David J. Klein, Sean J. Lawrence, Kathy Goggin, Mahlet Gizaw, Matt G. Mutchler
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Exposure to discrimination has been linked to lower HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and poor HIV care outcomes among Black Americans. Coping has been shown to mitigate the harmful effects of discrimination on health behaviors, but the use of cultural relevant Africultural coping strategies is understudied as a moderator of the association between intersectional discrimination and ART adherence among Black Americans. We used adjusted logistic regression to test whether Africultural coping strategies (cognitive/emotional debriefing; collective; spiritual-centered; ritual-centered) moderated associations between multiple forms of discrimination (HIV, sexual orientation, race) and good ART adherence (minimum of 75% or 85% of prescribed doses …

Comparing Online Versus Laboratory Measures Of Speech Perception In Older Children And Adolescents, Tara Mcallister, Jonathan L. Preston, Laura Ochs, Jennifer Hill, Elaine R. Hitchcock
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Given the increasing prevalence of online data collection, it is important to know how behavioral data obtained online compare to samples collected in the laboratory. This study compares online and in-person measurement of speech perception in older children and adolescents. Speech perception is important for assessment and treatment planning in speech-language pathology; we focus on the American English /r/ sound because of its frequency as a clinical target. Two speech perception tasks were adapted for web presentation using Gorilla: identification of items along a synthetic continuum from rake to wake, and category goodness judgment of English /r/ sounds in words …

Chinese Cinema Under Censorship: The Evolving Identities Of China, Siyuan Liu
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This thesis examines a selection of the most notable Chinese films that interacted with Chinese censorship regulations. Contemporary Chinese cinema has found itself in one of the most interesting situations in the present day. After the glorious1990s and 1980s New Wave movement Chinese cinema has diminished in terms of influence, style, and international recognition. And it is due to the strict censorship enforced since the beginning of the century. In this project, the author analyzes some of the most notable names in Chinese cinema: Jia Zhangke, Jiang Wen, Lou Ye, etc., most of whom were victims of the Chinese Film …

This study introduces a novel approach to assess the quality of doctoral dissertations using a mixed methods design, specifically the convergent parallel model. Initially, the research focuses on qualitative data obtained from the context, research problem statement, and study purpose within a doctoral dissertation. As an example of quantitative data, the study examines self-confidence in creating a database based on years of experience using a questionnaire. The qualitative analysis employs semantic and thematic analysis techniques, revealing a clear alignment between the identified themes and the quantitative evidence. These findings underscore the effectiveness of the mixed methods approach in comprehensively evaluating …
Data Sovereignty And Trade Agreements: Three Digital Kingdoms, Henry S. Gao
Data Sovereignty And Trade Agreements: Three Digital Kingdoms, Henry S. Gao
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
For centuries, international lawyers have wrestled with the relationship between national sovereignty and international law. This is also the case of international trade law, where the tension between trade liberalization and national sovereignty culminated in the famous “Great 1994 Sovereignty Debate” between the late Prof. John Jackson and other leading scholars when the WTO came into being. As we enter the digital age, the issue of sovereignty resurfaced once again in the form of data sovereignty. In this paper, I will examine provisions in trade agreements which deal with data sovereignty issues, such as restrictions on data flow such as …
Regulating Online Hate Speech: The Singapore Experiment, Siyuan Chen
Regulating Online Hate Speech: The Singapore Experiment, Siyuan Chen
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In Singapore, the introduction of the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act 2019 (POFMA) generated considerable debate and feedback. One of the main concerns was whether the law would unduly restrict the freedom of expression. In focusing on the provisions of POFMA that could possibly apply to hate speech, this paper situates the criticisms within the larger framework of international human rights law and international practices and proposes some ways forward to improve the regulatory framework for online hate speech.

Multiple therapies have been studied to ameliorate the neuroinhibitory cues present after traumatic injury to the central nervous system. Two previous in vitro studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the Food and Drug Administration-approved cardiovascular therapeutic, protamine (PRM), to overcome neuroinhibitory cues presented by chondroitin sulfates; however, the effect of a wide range of PRM concentrations on neuronal and glial cells has not been evaluated. In this study, we investigate the therapeutic efficacy of PRM with primary cortical neurons, hippocampal neurons, mixed glial cultures, and astrocytes. The threshold for PRM toxicity is shown to be at or above 10 µg …

This Article examineswhether our collective understanding of where scholarship can existshould expand to include podcasting as a formally acknowledged mediumfor legal scholarship. Student-edited law journals remain the primaryvehicle for disseminating law faculty scholarship, as well as an importantmeasure of faculty productivity and success as scholars, even though mostlegal research is conducted online. Despite acknowledged structurallimitations and biases inherent in the academic law review system, traditional print law journals continue to be more highly placed on thehierarchy …
Democratic Erosion And The United States Supreme Court, Jenny Breen
Democratic Erosion And The United States Supreme Court, Jenny Breen
Utah Law Review
For many decades, confidence in American institutions and political culture consistently led scholars to sideline questions about “regime change” in the United States. And for many years, that approach seemed justified. Democratic institutions were firmly rooted and stable, and American voters participated in free and fair elections that resulted in the peaceful transfer of power between parties and candidates. Then came the campaign of Donald Trump and all that has followed since, including open challenges to the most basic and fundamental democratic norms. These changes have led many voters, commentators, and scholars to ask: Is democracy eroding in the United …
