Queerness Through The Lens Of Abjection, Games, And Ai, Ryan Nguyen Jan 2025

Queerness Through The Lens Of Abjection, Games, And Ai, Ryan Nguyen

HMC Senior Theses

I have always understood queerness in relation to the heteronormative standards that our modern society imposes. That is, despite being queer, my own perception of my identity has been that it is abject. The abject is what disturbs identity, system, order, and what does not respect borders, positions, and rules. I have been indoctrinated to believe that queerness is a disturbance to the current system, that it is unnatural and repulsive. However, there is value in abjection. When faced with a primal repulsion, the boundaries between the Self and the Other are confronted and begin to break down. By breaking …

Balancing Sustainability With Preservation In Historic Italian Architecture, Maya A. Bruno Jan 2025

Balancing Sustainability With Preservation In Historic Italian Architecture, Maya A. Bruno

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

This research examines the intersection of historic preservation and sustainability in Italian architecture, analyzing how architects and contractors adapt historic structures to modern energy efficiency standards while maintaining cultural integrity. Using three Italian case studies—Ex-STA.VE.CO in Bologna, Sant’Apollinare in Perugia, and Castelvecchio in Verona—the study explores common challenges in regulatory compliance, material constraints, energy efficiency, seismic resilience, and adaptive reuse. Each case illustrates how sustainability measures interact with Italy’s stringent conservation laws and how historic buildings, inherently designed for climate adaptability, can be innovatively retrofitted. The findings provide insights into reconciling preservation principles with sustainable interventions, offering policy recommendations for …

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone: Evaluating Environmental Risks And Conflicts In Golf Course Landscapes, Meredith Boos Jan 2025

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone: Evaluating Environmental Risks And Conflicts In Golf Course Landscapes, Meredith Boos

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

1) This review investigates the relationship between pesticide use on golf courses and in agriculture to determine whether the adverse health effects documented in agricultural settings also apply to golf course environments. While the negative health effects from agricultural pesticide use are well established, golf courses use pesticides with greater frequency and intensity, suggesting a potentially higher exposure risk for both workers and players.

2) This study proposes methods to quantify pesticide bioaccumulation on golf courses and adjacent lands. We hypothesize that areas surrounding golf courses will exhibit a spatial gradient of pesticide accumulation, increasing with proximity to treated sites …

Pgc-1Α Activation To Enhance Macrophage Immune Function In Mycobacterial Infections, Joel R. Frandsen, Zhihong Yuan, Brahmchetna Bedi, Zohra Prasla, Seoung-Ryoung Choi, Prabagaran Narayanasamy, Ruxana Sadikot Jan 2025

Pgc-1Α Activation To Enhance Macrophage Immune Function In Mycobacterial Infections, Joel R. Frandsen, Zhihong Yuan, Brahmchetna Bedi, Zohra Prasla, Seoung-Ryoung Choi, Prabagaran Narayanasamy, Ruxana Sadikot

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) are a heterogeneous group of environmental microorganisms with distinct human pathogenesis. Their incidence and prevalence are rising worldwide, due in part to elevated antimicrobial resistance which complicates treatment and potential successful outcomes. Although information exists on the clinical significance of NTMs, little is known about host immune response to infection. NTM infections alter macrophage mitochondrial capacity and decrease ATP production, efficient immune response, and bacterial clearance. Transcription factor peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) is a master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, influencing metabolism, mitochondrial pathways, and antioxidant response. Mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is a …

Background: Insufficient research on health literacy related to cardiovascular disease highlights a gap in healthcare. Healthy People 2030 and local community health programs acknowledge gaps in research with future goals to improve health literacy.

Local Problem: The health literacy rate for Winnebago County, IL (41%) is higher than both the State of Illinois and national health literacy rates, which aligns with the results of a community needs assessment survey.

Methods: A community-based health promotion project using a pre-post study design uses the health promotion model to engage participants in advancing cardiovascular health outcomes.

Interventions: DNP student assisted participants in creating …

Technology Access, Training, And Affordability For African American Older Adults In The United States, Michelle Nettles Jan 2025

Technology Access, Training, And Affordability For African American Older Adults In The United States, Michelle Nettles

Community Engagement Student Work

Use of technology in the form of internet services and devices such as smartphones, desktop computers, and laptops is a critical part of modern-day society. Yet adults 65 and older struggle to use them despite the ease of access. Older adults’ disengagement with technology is often related to a lack of fundamental knowledge of hardware and/or software, associated costs, and fear of what technology use will expose them to. The purpose of this capstone project was to gain an understanding of the areas of intimidation related to technology use among older adults and the various strategies employed by organizations to …

Understanding Employee Attitudes Towards Organizational Dei Initiatives: A Self-Determination Perspective, Annette Cherice Hemphill Jan 2025

Understanding Employee Attitudes Towards Organizational Dei Initiatives: A Self-Determination Perspective, Annette Cherice Hemphill

Dissertations from the Executive Doctorate in Business Administration Program

This dissertation examined the role of employees' basic psychological need satisfaction— autonomy, competence, and relatedness—and its relationship to employee attitudes toward organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 2000), the study explored how fulfilling these needs influenced employees’ perceptions of value, attitudes towards and behavioral intentions regarding DEI initiatives. A review of relevant literature emphasized the intersection between motivational need satisfaction and diversity initiatives, particularly the role of intrinsic motivation in shaping attitudes. Data were collected from a sample of 269 U.S. based professionals via LinkedIn, Facebook, and Centiment, a third-party panel …

When Leaders Silence Employee: A Study Of Toxic Leadership And Organizational Cynicism, Vânia Amorim Café De Carvalho Jan 2025

When Leaders Silence Employee: A Study Of Toxic Leadership And Organizational Cynicism, Vânia Amorim Café De Carvalho

Dissertations from the Executive Doctorate in Business Administration Program

Employee silence—the conscious decision of employees to remain silent when they have information and ideas to share that can improve work and companies (Brinsfield, 2013; Tangirala & Ramanujam, 2008; Van Dyne et al., 2003; Morrison & Milliken, 2000)—has aroused great interest as it is increasingly prevalent in modern companies and has enormous potential to harm organizations. Depending on their characteristics and behavior, leaders can soften or deepen employees’ decisions to remain silent. Studies considering the adverse effects of the dark side of leaders on subordinates have gained attention in recent years. However, the impact of toxic leaders—leaders who intentionally inflict …

Who Teaches Consumer Law?, Jeff Sovern

Faculty Scholarship

This paper reports on a survey of 31 law professors teaching consumer protection law conducted in connection with the Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice at the UC Berkeley School of Law and the Center for Consumer Law at the University of Houston Law Center’s 2024 Teaching Consumer Law Conference. Surveys posed at previous editions of the Teaching Consumer Law Conference focused largely on what topics are covered in consumer law courses. The 2024 iteration of the survey instead explored responding professors’ goals in consumer law courses and experiences with and views on consumer law matters. Among the findings: …

“Et Les Filles”: Le Féminisme Subtil De Françoise Hardy, Charlotte Aexel Jan 2025

“Et Les Filles”: Le Féminisme Subtil De Françoise Hardy, Charlotte Aexel

World Languages and Cultures Senior Capstones

This article focuses on “yéyé” music, in particular the music of Françoise Hardy. I examine the feminist themes in the songs found on her first album, Tous les garçons et les filles. The majority of critics view her first album as immature, but I suggest that it shows a subtle but powerful feminism. For me, Françoise Hardy’s first album shows depth and advanced perception of social dynamics. In particular, Hardy demonstrated an awareness of the experiences of young women in her time. From her first album, Hardy presented herself as independent and intelligent. I cite critics from Hardy’s time and …

Los Beneficios De La Enseñanza De Lenguas Extranjeras Con Cuentos Bilingües En Escuelas Rurales, Morgan Gosdin

World Languages and Cultures Senior Capstones

This action research explores and reflects on the use of bilingual storytelling as a model for foreign language education in third-grade classrooms. Previous research indicates that familiar stories foster an ideal environment for young learners, shifting the focus to language rather than content (Kirsch, 2008). Stories invoke curiosity in students and allow learners to view a foreign language as comparable to their own rather than simply a list of rules and vocabulary words. The action research, conducted in rural Middle Georgia third-grade classrooms, incorporates cultural and linguistic education. A class of undergraduate language students conducted biweekly lessons reading Spanish stories, …

Scrutinizing Succession, Carrie Stanton Jan 2025

Scrutinizing Succession, Carrie Stanton

Scholarly Articles

Businesses are at their most vulnerable during leadership transitions. Lack of succession planning has been recognized as a key risk factor, especially for closely held, family-owned businesses, but the problem is more extensive. Even public corporations with supposedly independent boards of directors too often fail to separate the corporation’s interests from those of charismatic leaders who enjoy the perquisites of control and may be loath to surrender it. Shareholders trust directors to manage business affairs, and ensuring leadership continuity is critical to this charge. Yet succession often remains overlooked in practice. It also remains understudied in the literature, and state …

Online Dating Experiences And Body Dissatisfaction Among Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Individuals: A Qualitative Study, Luciano Caprio M.S. Jan 2025

Online Dating Experiences And Body Dissatisfaction Among Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Individuals: A Qualitative Study, Luciano Caprio M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Through the evolution of online dating applications, individuals are able to form interpersonal connections with one another at a rapid pace. The effects of such communications can hold both protective and risk factors within the LGBTQ+ community. Previous research suggests that lesbians, gay, and bisexuals who have experienced weight discrimination, particularly fatphobic and anti-fat attitudes, while utilizing these online dating platforms, have increased body dissatisfaction. However, there is minimal research focusing on the implications of discrimination, body dissatisfaction, and the usage of online dating platforms in the transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) community. This qualitative study explored the experiences of …

Embolization Of Brain Av Malformations, Ashleigh M. Button Jan 2025

Embolization Of Brain Av Malformations, Ashleigh M. Button

Student Research Poster Presentations 2025

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to discuss brain Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM) and the Interventional Radiology treatment plan. An AVM is a section of blood vessels that gets tangled, which then causes blood to flow abnormally through arteries and veins in the brain. Brain AVMs are considered to be very rare and approximately 1% of the population is affected. These malformations seem to be equally common in all genders and ethnicities. Most people diagnosed with AVMs are usually asymptomatic. AVMs may be a congenital birth defect or may occur throughout the lifetime. Endovascular embolization uses coils to fill or …

Wine As Gossip: The Making Of Living Objects And Human Experience, Elena Angerman Jan 2025

Wine As Gossip: The Making Of Living Objects And Human Experience, Elena Angerman

American Studies Honors Papers

In this honors study Wine as Gossip: The Making of Living Objects and Human Experience, I argue that there is an inherent power to wine as a means to subvert the narrative of the current American myth. I emphasize how the living nature of wine reflects how objects can have a level of consciousness and power. In the opening chapter, “Gossip and Wine: Uncovering Forms of Resistance and Methods to Subvert and Revise Power Structures” gossip serves as a means to understand how wine can be used in this subversion. I argue that wine and gossip are linked in …

U-Stressed? Do Library Employees Experience More Technology Eustress Or Distress?, Abigail Raper

Library Services Publications

Based on professional conversations regarding library technology usage and its impact on workrelated stress, I inquire whether library employees experience more technology eustress or distress on the job. This question was inspired by Tarafdar et al.’s (2019) Technostress Trifecta. My study explores a facet of this theoretical framework, specifically the relationship between motivating (eustress) and discouraging (distress) technology stress. The research project used a mixedmethods approach. I implemented the Information and Communication Technology Demands, the Eustress-Distress Emotion Regulation questionnaires, and a follow-up semi-structured interview. Study participants received a recruitment email through a professional newsletter read by people who work in …

Understanding The Relationship Between Children's Oral Health Utilization And Parent's Use Of Healthcare Services, Shillpa Naavaal, Rashmi Lamsal

Dental Public Health and Policy Publications

Introduction: Parents play an influential role in their children's lives, but little is known about how their healthcare experiences connect. This study examined the relationship between parent's healthcare use and their child's overall and preventive dental care use.

Methods: We pooled three years (2017–2019) of Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data and merged child (0–17 years) and parent data. Our outcomes included any dental visit, preventive visit, and receipt of sealant or fluoride. The primary exposure variable was the parents’ medical and dental care use, grouped into four categories. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were conducted, and multivariable logistic regression analyses …
