Positive Family Intervention For A Spanish-Speaking Family Of A Child With Autism: Impact On Child’S Behaviors And Parental Cognitions And Stress, Iris Garza Jan 2025

Positive Family Intervention For A Spanish-Speaking Family Of A Child With Autism: Impact On Child’S Behaviors And Parental Cognitions And Stress, Iris Garza

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the effects of a culturally and linguistically adapted Positive Family Intervention (PFI) on child behavior as well as parental stress and beliefs for a Spanish-speaking family of a child with autism. PFI combines Positive Behavior Support (PBS) to teach parents the skills to manage their child’s behavioral challenges with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help parents manage their own thoughts and feelings. An AB single-case design was used to examine the impact of PFI on directly observed child behavioral challenges and adaptive behavior. Further, parent-reported stress, parental attributions, and parent-reported child behavioral challenges were examined pre- and …

Gender Differences In Gaze Behavior: An Eye- Tracking Study Of Fixation Duration In Social Decision-Making, Rebeca Dobson Jan 2025

Gender Differences In Gaze Behavior: An Eye- Tracking Study Of Fixation Duration In Social Decision-Making, Rebeca Dobson

Theses and Dissertations

Eye-tracking technology provides valuable insights into attentional processes, cognitive functions, and social interactions. This study explores gender differences in gaze behavior, particularly fixation duration and frequency of back-and-forth eye-movements between stimuli (regressions), during preference-based social decision-making tasks. Using the Eye Link 1000 Plus system, we found that women exhibit longer fixation durations, suggesting deeper cognitive processing of social stimuli. These results have implications for understanding gendered attentional biases in social cognition and decision-making.

Examination Of School Professionals’ Knowledge Of Selective Mutism And Other Childhood Mental Health Disorders, Alisa Gudz Jan 2025

Examination Of School Professionals’ Knowledge Of Selective Mutism And Other Childhood Mental Health Disorders, Alisa Gudz

Theses and Dissertations

Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder characterized by the consistent failure to speak in specific social situations, despite the ability to effectively communicate in other settings. School professionals play an important role in identifying and supporting students with SM; however, previous studies suggest that knowledge of SM among school professionals is limited. The purpose of this study was to examine school professionals’ knowledge of SM compared to their knowledge of two other more common childhood disorders – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). This study investigated whether knowledge of ADHD or SAD was a stronger …

Beyond The Border: Analyzing The Role Of Unjust U.S Policies In Shaping The Migrant Crisis In New York City., Elvita Bouzy Jan 2025

Beyond The Border: Analyzing The Role Of Unjust U.S Policies In Shaping The Migrant Crisis In New York City., Elvita Bouzy

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how unjust and dysfunctional U.S. immigration laws have shaped the migrant crisis in New York City, particularly during the 2022-2024 influx of migrants, through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT). It explores how racialized immigration policies, systemic inequities, and rising nativism have intensified challenges faced by migrants from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and other marginalized regions. The study examines political opposition and media portrayals since the mid-1980s that hindered immigration reform, exposing a flawed system lacking adequate legal pathways. This inadequate framework has fueled discrimination and worsened asylum seekers' hardships. Driven by nativist sentiment and …

Broad And Specific Parenting Practices’ Effects On Toddlers’ Prosocial Development: A Three-Month Longitudinal Study, Cassandra Cheeseman Jan 2025

Broad And Specific Parenting Practices’ Effects On Toddlers’ Prosocial Development: A Three-Month Longitudinal Study, Cassandra Cheeseman

Theses and Dissertations

Prosocial behaviors typically emerge by age two and are associated with positive social and behavioral outcomes. Caregivers shape toddlers’ prosocial behavior development through broad (i.e., general warmth and sensitivity) and specific (i.e., social and material reinforcement) parenting practices. However, current research findings are mixed due to differences in toddler age, parenting practices studied, and the tendency to aggregate prosocial behaviors into one category. This aggregation approach overlooks the unique neurocognitive correlates, skills, and developmental trajectories of individual prosocial behaviors. To address these gaps, the current study investigates how broad and specific parenting practices relate to helping, sharing, and comforting, both …

The Beliefs And Attitudes Held By High School Students On Emoji Usage For Communication, Stacy Bonano Jan 2025

The Beliefs And Attitudes Held By High School Students On Emoji Usage For Communication, Stacy Bonano

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative, phenomenological study explored the attitudes and beliefs of high school students regarding emoji use and its impact on their communication with others. Despite the prevalence of emoji use among adolescents, limited research has examined how students interpret and apply these visual symbols. Eleven high school students from Dutchess County, New York, participated in in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using the theoretical frameworks of semiotics and constructivism to interpret how the students assigned meaning to emojis. Key findings identified emojis as emotional amplifiers, tone clarifiers, and tools of efficient communication. Participants also noted challenges related to misinterpretation and generational …

Barriers To Success In Higher Education For Second-Generation Caribbean American Men, Leonard S. Breton Jan 2025

Barriers To Success In Higher Education For Second-Generation Caribbean American Men, Leonard S. Breton

Theses and Dissertations

While the United States may be progressing, second-generation Caribbean American men, those with at least one foreign-born parent (US Census Bureau, 2016), are a population that, despite literature addressing benefits and detriments of their cultural experiences, still warrants continued examination through empirical testing (Lyttle et al., 2011). These students have a range of factors that make them nontraditional students. Challenges such as racism, sexual and ethnic identity, and generational status in this country can be compounded when cultural perspectives of immigrant families are factored in. Caribbean American men are guided by learned behaviors and cultural traditions that influence training and …

Hyper Segregation And Poverty: An Examination Of The Historical Forces That Shape The Academic Self-Concept Of African-American High School Students 1900 To 2000, David Byer-Tyre Jan 2025

Hyper Segregation And Poverty: An Examination Of The Historical Forces That Shape The Academic Self-Concept Of African-American High School Students 1900 To 2000, David Byer-Tyre

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this historical qualitative study was to identify the historical consequences of segregation, racism, and poverty on African Americans residents of Hempstead Long Island, and how these phenomena shaped contemporary Black students’ academic self-concepts. Among the issues that purportedly afflict American public education are the low academic achievements of African-American students in what might be termed “inner suburban” schools. The history of how Black communities and school were created and sustained was examined through a historical review of Black education in America, and a comparative analysis of the oral histories of fourteen graduates of Hempstead High school between …

Unraveling The Roots: A Historical And Sociocultural Perspective Of Family Literacy Practices And Parent Involvement In Black Communities Through A Critical Lens, Tasean D. Baldwin Jan 2025

Unraveling The Roots: A Historical And Sociocultural Perspective Of Family Literacy Practices And Parent Involvement In Black Communities Through A Critical Lens, Tasean D. Baldwin

Theses and Dissertations

Family literacy plays an essential role in a child's educational journey by laying the foundation for their academic success and shaping their attitudes toward learning. Social and cultural factors influence the value of literacy and education within families and communities. In Black communities, literacy has significant social and cultural influences, acting as a tool for resistance, empowerment, cultural preservation, identity formation, community building, and social and economic mobility while also historically facing obstacles due to systemic and institutional racism, which continues to impact access to education, resources, and opportunities today. This qualitative study explores the relationship between home and school …

Analysis And Authentication Of An Optical Method For Early Detection Of Harmful Algal Blooms, Cody Schumacher Jan 2025

Analysis And Authentication Of An Optical Method For Early Detection Of Harmful Algal Blooms, Cody Schumacher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The proliferation and frequency of harmful algal blooms (HABs) attributed to eutrophication, storm events and a changing climate have been an increasing concern in both lotic and lentic freshwater ecosystems. Methods of detecting HABs have been explored through fluorescent measurement and sample analysis, but are often expensive and time-consuming. A novel smart device application is in development to detect HABs based on images captured and analyzed by machine learning algorithms trained to distinguish potential cyanobacterial blooms. The HABs App model accurately detected cyanobacteria in strong relationship with biovolume concentrations (R2 = 0.996) within the Greenup Pool of the Ohio …

Pervasive Sensing To Correlate Vehicle Driving Behavior With City-Scale Traffic Dynamics, Debasree Das, Shameek Bhattacharjee, Sandip Chakraborty, Bivas Mitra, Sajal K. Das Jan 2025

Pervasive Sensing To Correlate Vehicle Driving Behavior With City-Scale Traffic Dynamics, Debasree Das, Shameek Bhattacharjee, Sandip Chakraborty, Bivas Mitra, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Individual driving behavior is a pivotal element that shapes the overall traffic dynamics in a city. In this work, we study and analyze the complex web of relationships between individual driving behaviors and their impact on the overall traffic dynamics of a smart city with two primary objectives: first, understanding the spatial interaction between individual vehicles and their impact on each other, and second, finding anomalous driving behaviors, which lead to congestion and traffic incidents. Specifically, we introduce an overarching modular framework investigating human factors of driver characteristics, vehicle attributes, geographical terrain surrounding the road infrastructure, and environmental conditions. Analyzing …

Existence Results For A Discrete Fractional Boundary Value Problem, David Barilla, Martin Bohner, Giuseppe Caristi, Shapour Heidarkhani, Shahin Moradi Jan 2025

Existence Results For A Discrete Fractional Boundary Value Problem, David Barilla, Martin Bohner, Giuseppe Caristi, Shapour Heidarkhani, Shahin Moradi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, we investigate the existence of at least one solution and the existence of an infinite number of solutions for a discrete fractional boundary value problem. Requiring an algebraic condition on the nonlinear term for small values of the parameter and requiring an additional asymptotical behavior of the potential at zero, we investigate the existence of at least one nontrivial solution for the problem. Moreover, under suitable assumptions on the oscillatory behavior of the nonlinearity at infinity, for exact collections of the parameter, we discuss the existence of a sequence of solutions for the problem. We also present …

Debating Member-Checks Of Exceptional Human Experiences, James Houran, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi, Beth M. Houran Jan 2025

Debating Member-Checks Of Exceptional Human Experiences, James Houran, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi, Beth M. Houran

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This integrative essay reflects on member-checking and engaged research approaches in the study of exceptional human experiences (EHEs)—subjective accounts that often challenge conventional views of consciousness and physical reality. Member-checking, or inviting research participants to review data or interpretations, can improve credibility by aligning research with their lived experience. While benefits include transparency and insight, risks include confirmatory bias, emotional distress, power asymmetries, and logistical complexity. The evolving nature of EHEs further complicates participant validation. We therefore advocate a six-level "fit-for-purpose" system to balance rigor with ethical care and responsiveness. We also explore digital, asynchronous, and AI-assisted strategies to enhance …

Who Drops Back In? An Investigation Into Non-Traditional Post-Secondary Students Who Return After Time Away, David Comolli Jr Jan 2025

Who Drops Back In? An Investigation Into Non-Traditional Post-Secondary Students Who Return After Time Away, David Comolli Jr

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Non-traditional students are adult learners that begin working on an undergraduate degree after their 25th birthday, many of whom enroll in a flexible baccalaureate program. These are programs that involve some component of learning outside of a traditional classroom (i.e., online, a job-site, etc.). The purpose of this research study was to investigate the like-experiences that exist among non-traditional students that left education and later returned, and to investigate desirable alternatives for students considering dropping out (taking time away). Three research questions guided this study, they were as follows:

  1. To what extent do personal events contribute to students choosing to …

Mental Health Stigma As A Barrier To Care, Whitney Grant Jan 2025

Mental Health Stigma As A Barrier To Care, Whitney Grant

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Abstract

Mental health stigma is a major barrier to care. The mental health stigma as a problem is relevant due to its influence on increasing the burden of mental health issues due to a lack of help-seeking, contributing to increased healthcare costs, and increasing adverse health outcomes. Currently there is no action consistently taken to assess or address this stigma in the primary care setting. Healthcare professionals can help to reduce the perceptions of stigma and lessen stigma as a barrier to care. A quality improvement project was implemented to evaluate if an education intervention by a primary care provider …

Policy Considerations Of Open-Source Intelligence: A Study Of Bellingcat's Online Investigation Patterns (2014-2024), Lora Pitman, Logan Walsh Jan 2025

Policy Considerations Of Open-Source Intelligence: A Study Of Bellingcat's Online Investigation Patterns (2014-2024), Lora Pitman, Logan Walsh

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

With the proliferation of social media and digital information tools, more and more internet users can participate in intelligence collection through open-source investigations – an area previously reserved for government agencies with access to classified information. The availability and easy access to open-source information, however, has raised some policy and ethical issues over time. Arguments were expressed in the literature, according to which, some of the most popular open-source investigation platforms collect and use information sometimes at the expense of the safety of users who posted the information online, unaware of how it was going to be utilized. Therefore, this …

Insurrection And Black Political Participation, Brandon Hasbrouck Jan 2025

Insurrection And Black Political Participation, Brandon Hasbrouck

Scholarly Articles

The Reconstruction Congress envisioned a comprehensive set of rights and structural protections in the Fourteenth Amendment to establish and preserve a multiracial democracy. The Fourteenth Amendment’s third section, the Insurrection Clause, may seldom have been enforced in recent memory, but it remains a vital part of the Amendment’s framework. The Insurrection Clause bars any state or federal government official who participates in a rebellion or insurrection after taking an oath to support the Constitution from serving in such a position again. In Trump v. Anderson, the Supreme Court was given a choice to either enforce the Insurrection Clause’s protection …

Is Suicide Among The Elderly Population Warranted Or Preventable, Ericka King

CSU Tower Day

Tower Day 2025 Undergraduate Poster 2nd place Winner

Growing old is perceived differently among world cultures. In some cultures, elders are revered and celebrated. However, in other cultures, growing old is dreaded and feared. Current Western culture depicts aging negatively through media, beauty marketing, and in general society. The elderly population is also a lost population as they are often forgotten about and overlooked. With aging comes with illness, depression, change in activities of daily living, financial stressors, isolation, societal changes, and death of loved ones, and eventually self. Chronic illness(es) can make it harder for the elderly to maintain …

Introduction, In Children And Violence: Agency, Experience, And Representation In And Beyond Armed Conflict (Christelle Molima Bameka Et Al. Eds., 2025), Christelle Molima Bameka, Mohamed Kamara, Mark A. Drumbl

Books and Chapters

This multi-disciplinary volume provides an innovative approach to children and violence, looking beyond the existing literature that focuses on child soldiers in the ‘Global South.’

Harnessing expert contributions from over a dozen countries, the book examines the relationship between children and violence, with a focus on children ensnared in military conflict, embroiled in criminal gangs, and enmeshed in political activism. It analyses how children join fights, how they fight, and what happens to them after fighting officially ends. It addresses cutting- edge issues such as cyberwars, self-defence, intergenerational trauma, gender fluidity, racism and state surveillance. Throughout, the book underscores the …

The Involvement Of Camp In The Secretion Of Il-10, Jyanna J. Mendola Jan 2025

The Involvement Of Camp In The Secretion Of Il-10, Jyanna J. Mendola

SURF Posters 2025

Schwann cells have been found to play a key role in inflammation and repair following nerve injury. During nerve injury, the myelin sheath becomes damaged, stimulating Schwann cells to secrete cytokines and initiate an inflammatory response. They begin the process of repair by stimulating macrophages to make pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-a), and anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as Interleukin 10 (IL-10) which promotes healing and injury. Although it is clear Schwann cells play a role in nerve repair, there is still yet to be known regarding the exact mechanisms by which they do so. In vitro, Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), …

Queerness Through The Lens Of Abjection, Games, And Ai, Ryan Nguyen Jan 2025

Queerness Through The Lens Of Abjection, Games, And Ai, Ryan Nguyen

HMC Senior Theses

I have always understood queerness in relation to the heteronormative standards that our modern society imposes. That is, despite being queer, my own perception of my identity has been that it is abject. The abject is what disturbs identity, system, order, and what does not respect borders, positions, and rules. I have been indoctrinated to believe that queerness is a disturbance to the current system, that it is unnatural and repulsive. However, there is value in abjection. When faced with a primal repulsion, the boundaries between the Self and the Other are confronted and begin to break down. By breaking …
