Future Scenarios Of Adoption Sustainable Materials By Construction Firms In The United Arab Emirates, Mona Albeshr Feb 2025

Future Scenarios Of Adoption Sustainable Materials By Construction Firms In The United Arab Emirates, Mona Albeshr

Theses

The construction industry accounts for 39% of greenhouse gas emissions, and change is required, especially with the Net Zero initiative. UAE construction companies must evaluate their current positions and update their strategies to support government regulations. Building futuristic communities is crucial for expanding the built environment within the country; however, the types of materials used should account for two aspects: sustainability and climate resilience, and both must be considered whenever these construction companies formulate their strategic response. Hence, scenario planning significantly provides valuable insights to decision-makers in construction companies’ strategic departments to envision four plausible scenarios of the external environment …

A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence On Racial Disproportionality In Special Education, Rachel E. Fish, Kenneth Shores, Joào M. Souto Maior Feb 2025

A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence On Racial Disproportionality In Special Education, Rachel E. Fish, Kenneth Shores, Joào M. Souto Maior

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

This essay provides a two-pronged critical assessment of a subset of the literature on racial disproportionality in special education: that which aims to estimate racial disparities among otherwise similar children. This body of research has shown that Black students are less likely than comparable White students to receive special education, and has been interpreted by many to mean that current policies meant to reduce Black over-representation may be exacerbating inequality. Our essay argues that this subset of research has fundamental limitations in its covariate adjustment practices and its data quality, making “under-representation” findings questionable. We argue that caution and further …

Autonomy Now?: Is It Time To Start Integrating (Autonomous) Urban Air Mobility Vehicles Into The National Airspace System?, Robert Notari Feb 2025

Autonomy Now?: Is It Time To Start Integrating (Autonomous) Urban Air Mobility Vehicles Into The National Airspace System?, Robert Notari

Texas A&M Law Review

Urban Air Mobility has the potential to radically change the fundamental nature of transportation within the United States. But challenges abound—from critical shortages of air traffic controllers and pilots and gaps in key technologies and infrastructure to the negative public perception of autonomous vehicles. FAA and industry, employing an evolutionary and safety-focused approach, can overcome these challenges through a combination of creative regulation, targeted technology development, and leveraging lessons learned through the FAA’s drone integration efforts. However, if drone integration is any guide, industry should be prepared for a long integration timeline, with autonomy still on the horizon.

How Health Literacy Influences Rural West Virginians Knowledge Of Chronic Disease Prevention And Management, Summer Mitchell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Health literacy can be described as the understanding of own’s own health and understanding of health-related information (Shadid, 2022). In rural communities, health literacy is typically at a lower level than in urban communities. West Virginia is a mostly rural state and in addition to lower health literacy, chronic diseases are high in West Virginia. The target area for this study was rural Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The purpose of the study was to examine perceived barriers to health literacy in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and how this affects understanding of chronic disease. Research questions focused on participants’ knowledge of …

The Impact Of Modern Band Experiences On Pre-Service Music Teachers’ Creative Identity: A Pre–Post Assessment, Tiao Xie, Clint Randles

Music Education Faculty Publications

This study explored the impact of a fifteen-week course in modern band practice on developing music teachers’ identities as creative music-makers. Modern band is a growing area of the research literature in music education. Composition, improvisation and popular music-making experiences constitute current band activity. The creative identity measure (CIM-measure) evaluates self-perceptions of abilities in these areas. The measure has been used and adopted in various research studies over the past decade. For this study, twelve pre-service music teachers enrolled in the course ‘Creative Performance Chamber Ensemble I’ at School of Music, University of South Florida, USA were assessed on their …

Doing More, Doing Better? A Critique Of The Criminalization Of Coercive Control, Janet Mosher, Shushanna Harris, Jennifer Koshan, Wanda Wiegers Feb 2025

Doing More, Doing Better? A Critique Of The Criminalization Of Coercive Control, Janet Mosher, Shushanna Harris, Jennifer Koshan, Wanda Wiegers

All Papers

Canada recently stood on the verge of ushering in a new criminal offence related to coercive control in the context of intimate relationships. In this paper, we critically evaluate this development, drawing out lessons from past criminalization efforts (particularly their impact on Black women and communities). Our analysis raises significant questions about the potential of the proposed offence to deliver on the promises held out by politicians and frontline advocates. We argue that not only will these promises go largely unrealized, but the ongoing harms of criminalization will be intensified. Marginalized women and communities are the least likely to benefit, …

Integral Roles Of The Tgfβ Signaling Pathway In Uterine Function And Disease Feb 2025

Integral Roles Of The Tgfβ Signaling Pathway In Uterine Function And Disease

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The uterus is a complex organ that requires precise signaling networks to mediate functions necessary for homeostasis and reproductive processes. The transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) superfamily regulates integral signaling pathways throughout many physiological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and development. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of how the TGFβ signaling family controls key uterine functions, with a specific focus on the endometrium. These uterine functions include endometrial receptivity, implantation, decidualization, placentation, remodeling, and regeneration. Improving our understanding of the signaling networks that regulate these processes is integral to identifying, diagnosing, and treating uterine and reproductive diseases …

Brd7 Loss Reawakens Dormant Metastasis Initiating Cells In Lung By Forging An Immunosuppressive Niche, Jayanta Mondal, Junfeng Zhang, Feng Qing, Shunping Li, Dhiraj Kumar, Filippo G Giancotti Feb 2025

Brd7 Loss Reawakens Dormant Metastasis Initiating Cells In Lung By Forging An Immunosuppressive Niche, Jayanta Mondal, Junfeng Zhang, Feng Qing, Shunping Li, Dhiraj Kumar, Filippo G Giancotti

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Metastasis in cancer is influenced by epigenetic factors. Using an in vivo screen, we demonstrate that several subunits of the polybromo-associated BAF (PBAF) chromatin remodeling complex, particularly Brd7, are required for maintaining breast cancer metastatic dormancy in the lungs of female mice. Brd7 loss induces metastatic reawakening, along with modifications in epigenomic landscapes and upregulated oncogenic signaling. Breast cancer cells harboring Brd7 inactivation also reprogram the surrounding immune microenvironment by downregulating MHC-1 expression and promoting a pro-metastatic cytokine profile. Flow cytometric and single-cell analyses reveal increased levels of pro-tumorigenic inflammatory and transitional neutrophils, CD8+ exhausted T cells, and CD4+ stress …

Emortgage And Crypto-Mortgage In Home Finance, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers Feb 2025

Emortgage And Crypto-Mortgage In Home Finance, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers

Pepperdine Law Review

Most home mortgage loans today are documented on physical paper, but they are increasingly closed as eMortgages. The move to electronic documents is inevitable and will ultimately be a positive change for lenders and borrowers. However, additional regulation is needed to address issues raised by electronic home mortgage closings and the “crypto-mortgage,” a mortgage loan with the obligation evidenced by or tethered to a non-fungible token. Lenders have traditionally required that home mortgage loans be evidenced by a wet-signed paper promissory note to gain the advantages and the certainty of Article 3 of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) governing negotiable …
