Offshore Philanthropy: A Critical Look At Family Offices Using Hybrid Trusts, Hang Wu Tang
Offshore Philanthropy: A Critical Look At Family Offices Using Hybrid Trusts, Hang Wu Tang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Family offices manage substantial wealth and often undertake philanthropic initiatives as part of their broader objectives. These offices may assume a variety of legal forms, ranging from corporations, partnerships, trusts administered by private trust companies or a combination of these forms. This article is concerned with family offices which use trusts administered by private trust companies in offshore jurisdictions. In response to competition for global wealth, several offshore jurisdictions have enacted trust laws that relax traditional doctrinal constraints to accommodate the needs of family offices. These include the creation of discretionary trusts for hybrid purposes in perpetuity ie trusts that …
An Exploratory Analysis Of Neurocognitive Performance And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) Among Latinx Asylum Seekers, Elsie A. Arias
An Exploratory Analysis Of Neurocognitive Performance And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) Among Latinx Asylum Seekers, Elsie A. Arias
Doctoral Dissertations
Asylum seekers are exposed to violence and traumatic events in their home countries at high rates, leading to mental health challenges such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD symptoms and comorbidities such as depression and alcohol misuse are associated with impacts to multiple domains of cognitive functioning among populations such as Veterans. However, the neurocognitive performance of Latinx asylum seekers who experience PTSD symptoms are under-documented in the current literature despite its meaningful impact on clinical care engagement and navigation of the legal process. This study utilized an exploratory, quantitative, cross-sectional design to examine whether higher levels of self-reported PTSD, …
Identity Development For Queer East Asian Americans During The Coming Out Process To Family, Mei E. Tam
Identity Development For Queer East Asian Americans During The Coming Out Process To Family, Mei E. Tam
Doctoral Dissertations
There has been a growing number of Asian Americans who openly identify as queer, with over half a million residing in the United States (UCLA, 2021). Despite this, psychological research has paid limited attention to how queer and Asian American identities intersect and are integrated, often framing them as conflicting while overlooking culturally embedded meaning-making processes. The present study explored identity formation among cisgender queer East Asian Americans during the critical period of coming out to family, focusing on how their understanding of and relationship to their queer and ethnic identities shifted following disclosure.

Towards Understanding Users' Theory Of Recommender Systems, Mohammed Muheeb Faizan Ghori
Towards Understanding Users' Theory Of Recommender Systems, Mohammed Muheeb Faizan Ghori
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Recommender systems have become deeply embedded in digital platforms such as streaming services, social media, and e-commerce applications, shaping how users discover information, consume content, and interact with online environments. Despite their widespread adoption, these systems are frequently perceived as opaque ‘black boxes’, leaving users uncertain about how recommendations are generated, why certain content is prioritized, and whether their interactions meaningfully influence recommendation outcomes. Existing research at the intersection of recommender systems and human–computer interaction has largely focused on improving transparency, explainability, and recommendation quality from a system-centered perspective. However, limited research has examined how users conceptualize recommender systems and …
Meridian, Rachel Seaton
Meridian, Rachel Seaton
Theses
Meridian is an ambient tabletop object that translates physiological data into a continuously evolving visual landscape. Rather than presenting emotional information through charts or notifications, it exists as a quiet environmental presence that can be understood through peripheral awareness. A simulated biometric system drives a particle field whose movement reflects physiological variation, producing eight distinct visual signatures. The visual system is governed by four parameters: field density, field disturbance, signal trace, and signal duration, which together shape the behavior and persistence of the particle field. The teardrop form was selected for its ability to convey both the passage of time …
Large Language Model-Driven Agents In Virtual Reality For Inclusive Communication Training, Ziming Li
Large Language Model-Driven Agents In Virtual Reality For Inclusive Communication Training, Ziming Li
Theses
Vocational training programs aimed at improving the employability and autonomy of autistic individuals primarily focus on enhancing social communication skills. However, developing and implementing such training activities often demands significant time and effort from job coaches, who must adapt to various interview and workplace scenarios while customizing the training to meet the specific needs of autistic trainees. These challenges create barriers for job coaches to efficiently train autistic individuals and objectively evaluate their performance. To address these challenges, this dissertation explores the use of virtual reality (VR) and large language model (LLM)-driven agents to create customizable and interactive training platforms …
The Limits Of Disclosure: Artificial Intelligence, Arbitration, And The Illusion Of Informed Consent, Rishi Batra
The Limits Of Disclosure: Artificial Intelligence, Arbitration, And The Illusion Of Informed Consent, Rishi Batra
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Consider the following scenario: A warehouse worker brings a wage and hour claim against her employer under her state's labor code. Her employment contract, which she signed on her first day of work, contains a mandatory arbitration clause that she did not negotiate, did not fully read, and — like most employees in her situation — did not fully understand. An arbitrator is appointed, a hearing is held, and an award is issued in the employer's favor several weeks later, denying the employee's claims entirely. The award is well-organized and internally consistent, addressing each of the worker's claims with what …

A Decade Of Change: Technology’S Impact On Negotiation Deepens In The Age Of Ai, Noam Ebner
Journal of Dispute Resolution
When people consider the notion of negotiation changing, they tend to look first toward that magnificent negotiation construct, “the table.” Here are some immediately apparent areas of table-novelty: • There is often a screen on our table, rather than another person sitting across from us. • The table we “go” to negotiate at is not in our office or that of our counterpart; rather, it is a communications system such as email or an online platform developed by a third-party provider. • The table, in its online-platform form, sometimes structures process and facilitates communication in ways that our trusty old …

The Life And Work Of Odr Visionary And Architect Colin Rule (So Far), John Lande
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Many people know Colin Rule as a pioneer of online dispute resolution. Fewer people probably appreciate the full breadth of his contributions over the last three decades. This article reviews Rule’s work as a builder of dispute resolution systems, writer, educator, entrepreneur, and institutional leader. It highlights recurring themes in his career and scholarship, including trust, fairness, usability, access to justice, and the need to keep human judgment at the center of technological innovation.
Cooling Conflict: Embedding Mediation Protocols In Data Center Land Sale Contracts, Allison Elias
Cooling Conflict: Embedding Mediation Protocols In Data Center Land Sale Contracts, Allison Elias
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Imagine a two-thousand-acre plot of land in rural Louisiana being leveled to accommodate a 10 billion dollar data center. With the construction of this data center comes the destruction of a region inhabited by rich plant and animal life as well as 80,000 residents, a quarter of whom live below the poverty line. Alternatively, think of a $750 million data center being built next door to your home, causing sediment build-up in your water supply, water scarcity, light pollution, and destruction of neighboring forests. Unfortunately, one does not have to imagine these scenarios. Both stories come directly from recent news …
Reports Of Legal Writing’S Death Are Greatly Exaggerated: Why Generative Ai Will Not Kill The Craft, Jayne T. Woods
Reports Of Legal Writing’S Death Are Greatly Exaggerated: Why Generative Ai Will Not Kill The Craft, Jayne T. Woods
Journal of Dispute Resolution
In preparing for this essay, I typed the phrase “legal writing is” into Google to see how common searches finished the thought. The only completed thought to appear was “legal writing is hard.” Amen. Legal writing is an amalgamation of logical reasoning, cognitive psychology, classical rhetoric, legal terminology, legal citation, and proper grammar and style, all of which must result in a product accessible to readers of all education levels. When generative AI arrived, producing cogent, plausible legal prose in seconds, it led many to believe that writing, generally, and legal writing, specifically, had reached the end of days.
Justice After Atrocity: Lessons From Rwanda And Cambodia For Contemporary International Law And Conflict, Jennie Hubbard
Justice After Atrocity: Lessons From Rwanda And Cambodia For Contemporary International Law And Conflict, Jennie Hubbard
Journal of Dispute Resolution
In the aftermath of mass atrocity, the question facing survivors and policymakers is not whether societies will rebuild but how rebuilding will address truth, justice, and memory. Modern transitional justice systems trace institutional and normative roots to the post—World War II order, most famously embodied by the Nuremberg Trials, which first established that individuals could be held accountable for crimes against humanity. Nuremberg did more than punish Nazi officials; it articulated a legal and moral principle that the international community could, and sometimes must, assert jurisdiction to address mass crimes when domestic systems fail. Despite that precedent, global reactions to …
Reforming Mediation: The Hidden Inequities Shaped By Race, Gender, And Power, Victoria Seever
Reforming Mediation: The Hidden Inequities Shaped By Race, Gender, And Power, Victoria Seever
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Courts and policymakers often promote family dispute resolution as a faster, less adversarial alternative to traditional litigation. Yet for many women of color, the mediation table often replicates the same racial and gender power imbalances that the legal system claims to mitigate. Family Dispute Resolution (“FDR”) often fails women of color by reinforcing racialized and gendered power imbalances. Alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”), especially mediation, presents both an opportunity and a risk in divorce, custody, and intimate partner violence (“IPV”) cases. IPV cases become especially difficult with the various laws in different states that govern how mediation should be used and …
Evolution, Structuration Theory, And New Research On Free Will, James Lull
Evolution, Structuration Theory, And New Research On Free Will, James Lull
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Classic structuration theory explains how social actors use their personal and collective agency to contend with the structural forces they encounter in everyday life. The antonimous interface between structure and agency is analyzed from an evolutionary communication perspective as it applies to structuration theory generally and to media audiences specifically. The explanatory power of structuration theory is then reconsidered in light of new research on an eternally profound question: Is the power of human agency restricted, if not entirely eliminated, by a lack of free will that can be exercised in human endeavors? Although the nature of structural influence is …

Background: Accurate segmentation of brain metastases (BM) is essential for diagnosis, stereotactic radiosurgery planning, and longitudinal assessment. However, manual contouring is time-intensive, limiting clinical scalability, and exhibits substantial inter-observer variability. This variability complicates objective assessment of automated segmentation methods and challenges interpretation of model performance.
Purpose: To address these limitations, we developed TUM-SAM, a hybrid foundation-model framework for fully automated BM segmentation, and introduced a bias-controlled, blinded multi-rater evaluation paradigm to determine whether AI-based BM segmentation has reached expert-level performance and whether AI-generated contours are preferred by human experts under unbiased assessment.
Methods: TUM-SAM integrates nnU-Net-based lesion detection with a …

Mitochondria remain at the core of cell metabolism, whereas the nucleus integrates cellular and environmental signals to activate genes. However, the mechanisms that directly link cellular metabolism to gene regulation are not well understood. Here we show, a metabolic pathway in the nucleus controls acetylation of histones by nuclear localization of mitochondrial enzymes aconitase (ACO2) and isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH2). Metabolic tracing studies show that IDH2 and ACO2 catalyze reductive carboxylation of α-ketoglutarate to rapidly synthesize citrate to increase nuclear acetyl-CoA pool. Genetic and proteomic analyses reveal nuclear IDH2 and ACO2 form a complex with KAT2A/GCN5 for acetylation of histones to …

Chronic ethanol (EtOH) exposure and withdrawal are linked to worsened memory and cognitive outcomes. One target of EtOH is the glutamatergic α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR). Both EtOH exposure and withdrawal influences AMPAR expression, function, and broad glutamate signaling. Previous work suggests that EtOH regulation of AMPARs drives behaviors related to dependence and memory phenotypes. However, due to the complexity of the mammalian brain, it is difficult to unravel the precise mechanism by which EtOH regulates AMPARs in mammals to modify specific memory behaviors. In Caenorhabditis elegans, GLR-1, an AMPAR ortholog, has tightly defined expression in relatively few neurons, conserved …

Changes in leisure consumption are causing transformations in the relationships between young people and brands. A reflection of this is found in video games, whose predominant user profile is that of young people between 18 and 30 years old. They invest more and more time in digital universes: they play, socialize and even buy, and income from the video game sector has increased year after year in Spain and in the world, surpassing those generated jointly by cinema and music. A review of previous literature indicates the relevance as an object of study of video games that are used as …

Hubungan Rencana Karir Dan Keberhasilan Studi Mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Jerman Universitas Negeri Malang, Andi Burhanudin S., Primardiana Hermilia Wijayati
Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
This study aimed to examine the relationship between career planning and academic success among undergraduate students in the German Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Malang. A quantitative correlational design was employed. From a population of 335 students, a total of 126 respondents who met the research criteria and completed the questionnaire were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, and Spearman’s rank-order correlation (ρ). The results revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between career planning and academic success (ρ = .527, p < .001). Students who demonstrated more active career exploration, greater self-understanding, clearer career goals, and better utilization of academic and social support tended to achieve higher academic performance, as reflected in a cumulative grade point average (GPA) above 3.00. Nevertheless, the findings also indicate that students’ career readiness still requires further development. This is reflected in their predominant use of general job-search platforms and the relatively limited participation in career development activities. Therefore, higher education institutions should strengthen career guidance services by providing more systematic career information, expanding access to career development programs, and integrating career services into the academic learning process to better prepare students for the labor market.

College of Population Health Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Low enrollment and retention in clinical research disproportionately impact Black, Hispanic or Latinx, women, and rural populations, undermining generalizability and perpetuating health disparities. However, few studies have compared mechanisms driving underrepresentation across populations. Freelisting is a qualitative methodology that elicits lists of terms, explores perspectives about domains, and identifies common themes within groups with shared characteristics; however, it has not been systematically applied to understand research participation across underrepresented populations.
OBJECTIVE: To explore perspectives on clinical research participation across underrepresented populations using freelisting methodology to ultimately inform culturally-responsive recruitment strategies.
METHODS: We conducted a web-based freelisting survey among adults …

A system is proposed herein through which a set of techniques can be utilized to create a coordinated, latency-aware allocation policy for Dynamic Sub-band Operation (DSO). DSO can be used to create multiple parallel contention domains. For example, an access point (AP) can use fine-grained per-sub-band measurements, including overlapping basic service set (OBSS) frame ratio, jitter variance, airtime fairness, clear channel assessment (CCA), and retry metrics, to compute a condition score per sub-band. The AP can also use neighbor coordination pressure to prevent overlapping basic service sets (BSSs) from converging on the same sub-band and apply traffic-class-aware admission limits with …

Regional Shrink Testing is disclosed for empirical capacity validation in distributed computing infrastructure. A controller configures a production region by applying safeguards such as disabling autoscaling and isolating load balancing behavior, captures baseline metrics, and iteratively reduces active service instances while maintaining substantially constant production traffic. Shrink targets may be computed proportionally per hardware type class (LSST) using resource weights, with instance selection based on priority and/or random sampling. A monitoring layer evaluates stopper metrics at a percentile across active hosts and classifies health into multiple levels to control shrinking, backoff, and peak detection based on sustained threshold durations. Systems And Methods For Trust-Adaptive Ranking With Asymmetric Recovery In Content Recommendation, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
Systems and methods maintain a per-user trust score for a recommendation system and adapt ranking behavior based on the trust score. The trust score is updated after recommendation outcomes using asymmetric dynamics in which positive outcomes increase trust with diminishing returns and negative outcomes decrease trust more strongly, optionally using severity weights for different negative signals and a small decay for neutral outcomes. The trust score is classified into discrete trust states that simultaneously modulate multiple ranking parameters, including a candidate quality threshold, an exploration rate, prediction-confidence weighting applied to ranking scores, and sensitivity to negative-signal predictions. When trust is …

Partitioned User Profile Architecture With Differentiated Access Control For Recommendation Systems, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
Techniques are described for partitioning user profiles in agentic recommendation systems into a preference partition and a behavioral vulnerability partition with differentiated access control. A ranking agent retrieves only the preference partition to rank candidate content items, while a separate well-being monitoring system retrieves only the behavioral partition to compute a vulnerability-related measure and determine interventions. The well-being monitoring system transmits serving constraints to the ranking agent via a one-way constraint interface that excludes behavioral vulnerability indicators, such that delivery behavior may be adjusted (e.g., pacing, breaks, item limits, resource surfacing) without exposing behavioral vulnerability data to the ranking objective. …

A digital advertising platform constructs a per-user product ownership graph by ingesting third-party conversion signals from multiple advertisers, including purchase events and registration-related events, and resolving each signal to a canonical product entity using catalog matching, fuzzy attribute matching, and cross-merchant deduplication. The platform assigns an ownership confidence score and stores owned product nodes with acquisition metadata, taxonomy, attributes, lifecycle state, and relationship edges such as complementary, successor, substitute, and sequence relationships. During ad selection and auction, the platform suppresses ads for owned products and for satisfied categories, and adjusts ranking to promote complementary products, timed replacements, version upgrades, similarity-based …

Distributed Ledger-Based Provenance Tracking And Verification For Multi-Agent Ai Knowledge Systems, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
A blockchain-based provenance verification layer is described for text-based knowledge artifacts shared among multiple AI agents. Middleware intercepts creation and consumption of artifacts in shared knowledge stores and associates each artifact or claim with a provenance record on a distributed ledger, including content hash, author identifier, timestamp, verification status, parent links, propagation depth, and confidence. Independent verification agents generate cryptographically signed attestations using techniques such as command help checks, API test calls, cross-references, and consistency checks, and ledger status is updated accordingly, optionally blocking unverified writes. During reads, a trust score is computed from verification status, attestation density, propagation depth, …
