Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The spread of tau pathology across the cerebral cortex is closely tied to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). To investigate mechanisms underlying tau spread, we measured bioactivity of tau seeds from inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and superior frontal gyrus (SFG) synaptosomes in 128 individuals and demonstrated that tau seed bioactivity associates with tau phosphorylation, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), and cognitive impairment. Incorporating genotype data from the same individuals within a Mendelian randomization framework showed that tau seeds in ITG induce NFTs locally as well as drive tau seeds and NFTs in SFG. Integrating antemortem functional magnetic resonance imaging data from …

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Adolescents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer (LGBQ+) develop their identities within complex social contexts. In rural settings, limited access to affirming resources and greater exposure to stigma may further shape identity development. Guided by social ecological and minority stress theories, this study examined whether perceived family and friend support predict identity affirmation and internalized homonegativity among rural LGBQ+ adolescents. Participants included 53 adolescents ages 13 to 18 drawn from a larger dataset. Group differences across demographic variables were examined, and regression analyses were used to evaluate the predictive role of family and friend support. No significant group …

Design And Development Of A Novel Lxrβ/Pparδ Dual Agonist For Memory Impairment And Pathology In 3xtg-Ad Animal Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Meenakshi Singh, Ian Steinke, Vishnu Suppiramaniam

Faculty Articles

The rising prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) underscores an urgent need for neuroprotective strategies that modulate cholesterol metabolism, neuroinflammation, improve pathology, and cognitive function. While Liver X receptors (LXRs) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are validated targets for enhancing amyloid-β and tau clearance, clinical translation of first-generation LXR agonists has been hindered by LXRα-mediated hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia. Here, we report the structure-based design of AU403, a potent, isoform-selective LXRβ/PPARδ dual agonist designed to bypass LXRα-driven hepatotoxicity. Molecular modeling indicates that AU403 achieves LXRβ selectivity by engaging residues Phe329 and Leu330 while avoiding the corresponding LXRα residues Arg305 and Leu316. …

Anoxia Tolerant Dna Replication Is Supported By Atr Kinase In The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Riley Roth-Carter, Erin Helms, Joshua C. Saldivar, Jason Podrabsky

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hypoxia and anoxia suppress cell proliferation due to an increase in replication stress and activation of DNA damage checkpoints. Embryos of the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus tolerate prolonged anoxia, indicating improved genomic stability under oxygen starvation. We investigated the cell cycle regulation of the anoxia tolerant killifish embryonic cell line PSU-AL-WS40NE during anoxia. Live-cell imaging confirms continued proliferation of WS40NE cells for the first 24 h of anoxia with minimal cell death. Fluorescence imaging shows that cells accumulate in G1 after the first day in anoxia with a rapid entry into S phase upon reoxygenation. Pharmacological inhibition shows a reliance …

Proteogenomic analyses have identified an association between LIG1 (DNA Ligase I) loss and chemotherapy resistance in a subset of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) enriched for TP53 mutations. Here, we demonstrate that co-occurrence of TP53 mutations and LIG1 loss is associated with upregulated DDR activity, including homologous recombination, likely contributing to reduced platinum sensitivity. Unbiased genetic and monotherapy drug screens identified PARP inhibitors (PARPi) as a potential treatment for LIG1-depleted tumors; however, the increase in sensitivity was modest and lower than that observed in TNBC models with homologous recombination deficiency. Subsequently, a screen of PARP inhibition in combination with each …

Romance fiction is one of the most commercially successful and culturally significant genres in contemporary publishing, and this is not a one-year instance; it is a multi-year trend (Adams, 2026). In 2025, sales were up in the United States, and the growth was across platforms and formats—digital audio, e-books, and print. Two subgenres have sparked greater interest—romantasy and dark romance. Romantasy, the combination of romance and fantasy, has drawn new readers with the explosion of Sarah J. Maas, and dark romance, which gained some notoriety with Fifty Shades of Grey (2011) has seen strong growth and acceptance. In fact, the …

From Landfill To Ladle: Using Open Lca To Calculate Food Diversion Impacts, Samantha Rodriguez Jul 2026

From Landfill To Ladle: Using Open Lca To Calculate Food Diversion Impacts, Samantha Rodriguez

DePaul Discoveries

Food waste contributes to climate change because discarded food results in wasting embodied carbon from producing food. In addition to wasting embodied carbon, food that ends up in landfills emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. This life cycle assessment quantifies the carbon equivalent footprint of food donations from Costco to the Seton Soup Kitchen using OpenLCA. Two functional units were analyzed in this study. The first functional unit is one meal consisting of 500 grams of donated food that would otherwise be landfilled served to a Seton Soup Kitchen patron during one meal service. The …

Webhook-Anchored Call-Bound Hmac Token Chain For Telephony Media-Stream Websocket Upgrades, Gustavo Matthew Assuncao Jul 2026

Webhook-Anchored Call-Bound Hmac Token Chain For Telephony Media-Stream Websocket Upgrades, Gustavo Matthew Assuncao

Defensive Publications Series

Every widely-copied "connect a phone call to a realtime LLM" sample — Twilio Media Streams bridged into OpenAI Realtime, and the many forks of it — ships an application WebSocket endpoint (commonly /media-stream or /api/voice/stream) that accepts any upgrade request that knows the path. The telephony provider connects to that socket out-of-band, over the public internet, carrying no bearer credential. An attacker who learns or guesses the path can open the same socket and drive a paid realtime-inference session on the victim's account: classic toll-fraud and premium-resource abuse. This publication discloses a fail-closed trust chain that closes the hole without …

Exploring Hotel Sustainability Through A Service Design Lens: An Espoused Theory Vs. Theory-In-Use Perspective, Cindy Yoonjoung Heo, Jaehyun Park, Sanqi Yang, Chen Ni, Lei Tang, Lei Yu, Julneth Rogenhofer, Geraldine Assen

ICHRIE Research Reports

Sustainability is now widely embedded in hotel strategies, but it is often assessed through what hotels communicate rather than what guests actually experience. This study examines that disconnect by drawing on Argyris and Schön’s distinction between espoused theory and theory-in-use, combined with a service design perspective. Using document analysis alongside in-situ observations at the front desk and in guest rooms, the study looks at how sustainability appears across service touchpoints and whether it is likely to be noticed and understood by guests. The findings suggest that many initiatives are operationally in place but remain largely out of sight during the …
