The White Elephant In The Classroom: Using Local History And Resource Pedagogies To Remove It, Dawn N. Colquitt-Anderson

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Years of scholarship outline the benefits of asset-based pedagogy for all students, especially the culturally and linguistically diverse students who are now the majority student population in public schools. But there is scant research on how experienced in-service teachers modify their practices and beliefs to adequately prepare these students for 21st century leadership. This sequential mixed methods case study examined the efforts of elementary and middle school teachers as they grappled with personal, professional, and systemic barriers that arose as they worked to strengthen their cultural and community responsiveness by centering the local history of a historic great migration town.

From Decriminalization To Social Legitimization: The Lived Experiences Of Non-Conforming Individuals In India, Heeya Datta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores how queer and non-conforming individuals in urban India navigate, resist, and reimagine dominant norms of kinship, intimacy, and family. Drawing on 18 in-depth interviews, it examines the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in the aftermath of legal reforms such as the decriminalization of Section 377 and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act. While these reforms mark symbolic progress, queer individuals continue to face social stigma, legal exclusions, and familial rejection. The study is divided into three chapters: the first analyzes the dual role of homosociality as both a space of refuge and constraint; the second investigates …

“I Didn't Come Here To Make Money”: Exploring Power 4 Athletes’ Perceptions Of Exploitation, Sarah Stokowski, Chris Corr, Kaleigh Smith, Elijah Toney, Emma Kate Bostick, Eileen Russell, Brooke Prince, Michael Godfrey

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

While it is widely noted that athletes competing in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletics are exploited in a variety of ways, scholarly examinations of college athlete exploitation have rarely sought to engage athletes themselves. Accordingly, researchers conducted in-depth, detailed, semi-structured interviews with college athletes currently competing in Power 4 conferences to uncover their perceptions of exploitation based on their lived experiences. Ten athletes representing five distinct sports (baseball, football, gymnastics, softball, and track and field) competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, and Southeastern Conference agreed to participate in the study. Findings indicate the characteristics of participants’ …

Ncaa Student-Athletes' Sports Gambling Behaviors Examined Using Psychological Reactance Theory, Braden E. Norris, Paul M. Pedersen

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Since the repeal of the Pro and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, sports gambling has been a rapidly growing segment of the sport world. The United States federal government has left it up to individual states to legalize and govern the activity of sports gambling, however, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) still prohibits (Bylaw 10.3) the activity regardless of legality. With it known that student-athletes violate Bylaw 10.3 (e.g., Paskus & Derevensky, 2025; Richard et al., 2019), this study examined sports gambling behaviors through under the scope of Psychological Reactance Theory (PRT) to investigate if student-athletes’ sports …

Recruitment Of International College Athletes (Icas) To The United States: A Bourdieuian Examination Of Pathways To Success, Simran Kaur Sethi, Kirsten Hextrum, Kaitlin Pericak

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Successful recruitment pathways of international college athletes (ICAs) remain understudied. We use Bourdieu’s capital exchange theory to examine how ICAs acquire and deploy forms of capital to navigate college athletic recruitment. Bourdieu posits that individuals accumulate different forms of capital, including economic, social, and cultural capital, which they can use to gain access to resources and opportunities. In the context of athletic recruitment, ICAs may need to acquire different forms of capital than their domestic counterparts. Thus, we use a qualitative research design to explore how ICAs navigate the recruitment process. Findings from our study provide valuable insights into the …

Annual Research Congress for High School and Elementary Teachers, Researchers, and Scholars (ARCHERS)

The extracts from E. hirta have antimicrobial properties against a broad range of pathogenic microbes. On the other hand, fabric softeners are a growing component of full laundry care systems, since clothes were designed to wear; despite detergent-based washing, there's a growing demand for fabric softeners to sterilize clothing and prevent reintroduction of harmful microorganisms, making them a crucial part of laundry care systems. However, existing fabric softeners nowadays mostly rely on chemical-based ingredients to prevent microbial growth on clothes; therefore, this study aims to use the antimicrobial properties of the Tawa-tawa plant on the microbes related to the clothes. …

The Consequences Of Technology In Player Piano, I, Robot, And Feed, Chehalis D. Eno May 2025

The Consequences Of Technology In Player Piano, I, Robot, And Feed, Chehalis D. Eno

Student Research

With the rise of technologies coined as “artificial intelligence,” the question of human agency in society has never been more pressing. The literary genre of science fiction (SF) holds crucial clues to answering the question. Authors of texts such as Player Piano, I, Robot, and Feed each construct societies shaped by the technology they create and postulate drastic consequences as a result. Using Althusserian Marxism to analyze the ideological and repressive state apparatuses of each author’s society and posthumanism to analyze the resulting interactions with technology, this essay seeks to recognize patterns in human behavior that create technological …
