Aortic stenosis (AS) is one of the most common types of valvular heart disease in older adults, with age being significantly associated with the development of AS. The transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure, since it was first performed in 2002, has emerged as a preferred treatment option for patients who are at intermediate to high surgical risk due to advanced age or medical comorbidities. Older adults with severe AS may present with acute decompensated heart failure leading to cardiogenic shock (CS). Among patients 65 years and older with AS presenting for TAVR, 4.1% were reportedly in acute CS. Regardless …

Current Events In Legal Classrooms: Enhancing Professional Identity Formation, Stevie Leahy May 2025

Current Events In Legal Classrooms: Enhancing Professional Identity Formation, Stevie Leahy

Mercer Law Review

In the Fall of 2023, educators were surveyed on their inclusion of “current events” in classroom spaces (“CE Survey”). The term current events was broadly defined as: “events that are happening in the world, including recent legal decisions (U.S. or global), political events that impact the operation of the legal system, and/or social events that impact your community. This definition is intended to be inclusive.” Based on nearly 100 responses, the results indicate that while the large majority of educators agreed that incorporating current events into instruction is vital, there are still many barriers to responsible inclusion of this type …

From Erasure To (Re)Vision: Blackgirls In Education, Nicole E. Mclaren

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Blackgirls can grow up, attend school, and never have a teacher who looks like them. Their teachers may never tell them they could become great teachers someday, or school may not be an affirming place they can imagine returning to as educators. Black women make up only 6% of K-12 teachers, and this research shares the life stories of fourteen Blackgirl educators from that notable group, highlighting the challenges they faced on their journey to becoming teachers. This interview-based study uncovers some of the emotional and institutional scars Black women carry. Findings show that the path to and staying in …

Expressing Sincere Gratitude In Writing: A Modest Step Towards Being A Better And More Effective Lawyer, Bret Rappaport

Mercer Law Review

In my antique desk, at the far back of the big hard-to-open drawer, sits a large brown envelope. The envelope holds about forty years’ worth of thank-you notes to me. Some from clients. Some from coworkers. Some from students. Why do I keep them? Maybe I will be able to answer that question by the time I finish writing this Article. As I write this Introduction, I’m not sure. I don’t specifically remember each card or letter, but a couple do come to mind. They do so with blazing clarity. One is from my high school English teacher, Mrs. Severns. …

The Pressure Points Of Professional Identity For Judges In The Modern Era, Charles Gardner Geyh May 2025

The Pressure Points Of Professional Identity For Judges In The Modern Era, Charles Gardner Geyh

Mercer Law Review

The duties core to the professional identity of a judge are encapsulated in an ethical directive at the literal forefront of the Model Code of Judicial Conduct, some variation of which all state and federal judiciaries have adopted. Rule 1.2 provides that “[a] judge shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the independence, integrity, and impartiality of the judiciary[.]” This directive implicates three challenges, or pressure points, relevant to a judge’s identity: 1) insofar as judges begin their legal careers as practicing lawyers, when they ascend the bench their professional identities must transition from …

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

Hazing Prevention Education

Hazing in higher education is often hidden behind a culture of secrecy, tradition, or team-building. It includes any unwanted physical, emotional, or psychological activities that a person undergoes before joining a group that has clear lasting impacts on the person’s health, regardless of willingness to participate (H.R.5646 - Stop Campus Hazing Act, 2024; Boyer, A., n.d.). Seven nursing students partnered with a university’s campus security office in Seattle, Washington. This department is responsible for maintaining a safe and respectful campus environment, making it a key stakeholder in hazing prevention efforts.

Guided by the Stop Campus Hazing Act …

Spatiotemporal Calcium Signaling Patterns Underlying Opposing Effects Of Histamine And Tas2r Agonists In Airway Smooth Muscle, Stanley Conaway, Joshua Richard, Deepak A. Deshpande May 2025

Spatiotemporal Calcium Signaling Patterns Underlying Opposing Effects Of Histamine And Tas2r Agonists In Airway Smooth Muscle, Stanley Conaway, Joshua Richard, Deepak A. Deshpande

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Intracellular calcium (Ca2+) release via phospholipase C (PLC) following G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) activation is typically linked to membrane depolarization and airway smooth muscle (ASM) contraction. However, recent findings show that bitter taste receptor agonists, such as chloroquine (CQ), induce a paradoxical and potent relaxation response despite activating the Ca2+ signaling pathway. This relaxation has been hypothesized to be driven by a distinct compartmentalization of calcium ions toward the cellular periphery, subsequently leading to membrane hyperpolarization, in contrast to the contractile effects of histamine. In this study, we further investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ca2+ signaling in …

The shortage is a complex national crisis compounded by the high turnover of qualified nurses. Turnover is when a nurse leaves an organization for another nursing position or leaves the profession …

Disability: A Dirty Word? How Language Historically Perpetuates Exclusion And Systemic Oppression, Kelly E. Imm May 2025

Disability: A Dirty Word? How Language Historically Perpetuates Exclusion And Systemic Oppression, Kelly E. Imm

Graduate Masters Theses

In 1990, the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) marked a pivotal moment in the American disability rights movement, which began in the 1960s and sought to secure civil rights for people with disabilities. Despite this monumental achievement, this thesis considers how the language used throughout American history and culture to describe people with disabilities, even within the confines of progressive legislation like the ADA, remains deeply rooted in ableist and oppressive historical attitudes. At the heart of this issue, this thesis demonstrates how the medicalization of disability, which has dominated American culture for centuries, continues to frame …

Physical Activity And Body Image In Early Onset Cancer Patients, Madeleine Z. Pollard May 2025

Physical Activity And Body Image In Early Onset Cancer Patients, Madeleine Z. Pollard

Graduate Masters Theses

Abstract: Cancer is the leading cause of death among Americans under the age of 85 (Brown et al., 2012). There are increasing rates of cancer diagnoses in adults aged 18-49, which is described as an early onset (EO) diagnosis. Despite high survival rates (Lewis et al., 2021), EO cancer patients are at increased risk for long-term physical and psychological challenges associated with both the disease and its treatment (Haque et al., 2023). Cancer diagnosed during these critical periods of life can significantly impact self-perception and body image, which are critical to identity formation and quality of life (Castonguay, et al., …

Give Them Their Roses: Honoring Student Affairs Professionals Of Color Combatting Secondary Racial Battle Fatigue At A Historically White Institution, Julián X. Latshang, Julián X. Latshang

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the phenomenon of Secondary Racial Battle Fatigue (SRBF) and its impact on student affairs professionals of color in higher education. Grounded in critical qualitative inquiry and the lived experiences of participants, this study examines how emotional, behavioral, and physiological effects of SRBF manifest both through professionals’ direct racialized experiences and their roles supporting students enduring racial trauma. Framed by Racial Battle Fatigue (Smith, 2010) and Secondary Traumatic Stress (Figley, 1995), the research addresses three guiding questions: (a) How does SRBF manifest in professionals of color? (b) In what ways does it emerge when supporting racially traumatized students? …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic erupted on 15 January 2022, causing Lamb waves to propagate throughout the global troposphere. However, reports on volcanic eruptions–pressure fluctuations and water level dynamics are lacking. We quantified the propagation processes of Lamb waves induced by the Tonga volcanic eruption. Barometric pressure data collected at 1-min intervals at 485 meteorological stations in China showed that the eruption induced an atmospheric pressure event with an amplitude of ∼2 hPa over an hour and a wave speed of 295 m/s. Concomitant groundwater levels were available at 338 wells to find the barometric response to the volcanic event. The …
