The Stream Of Life, Yitao Yuan May 2025

The Stream Of Life, Yitao Yuan

Masters Theses

The repetitive engagement with technological objects erases the depth of emotion by creating habits that bypass embodied and erotic pleasures and lead to a de-sexualized form of technology fetishism. The stimuli produced by machines that humans engage with are not able to convey the strength of intimacy between humans. Such virtual stimuli as the words and images produced and mediated through modern machines continuously shape conscious perception. This thesis book is split into two sections: a theoretical text and a series of images and explanations about my installation practice and process. They both seek to investigate the intersection of human …

Echoes Of Longing, Mahalexmi Mohan May 2025

Echoes Of Longing, Mahalexmi Mohan

Masters Theses

Loss lingers like a shadow, a weight no time can lift. Longing becomes a silent scream, echoing within, unanswered. Internal pain festers in the quiet, where unhealed wounds weave themselves into the fabric of being. Each breath is both survival and surrender, a fragile balance between hope and the hollow ache of what was, what will never be, yet could be.

Abstract

My work is deeply influenced by my experiences within a dysfunctional family structure and is explored through the relationship of emotional vulnerability and its effect on self-worth. Layered into the work is a confrontation with the scars, conflict …

Body Choice Of Women-507, Yilin Sun May 2025

Body Choice Of Women-507, Yilin Sun

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the struggle for bodily autonomy through the lens of contemporary art, focusing on 507, a kinetic installation by Yilin (Rebecca) Sun. At the heart of this work lies a powerful meditation on the emotional and political dimensions of reproductive responsibility. In a world where women’s rights over their own bodies are frequently contested, 507 becomes both a vessel of remembrance and a visual act of resistance. It channels the often-silenced experiences of women into a shared space of reflection, mourning, and confrontation.

Rather than offering straightforward answers, 507 presents an enigmatic title and a symbolic language …

Of Primal Substance, Yueting Wu May 2025

Of Primal Substance, Yueting Wu

Masters Theses

This collection of writings arises from encounters with intensity and embodied practice — moments that reveal the body’s capacity for transformation.

Last year, I experienced ego death The intensity of the vibration and movement evoked deconstruction, reconstruction, and liberation. It felt like a vibrational reorganization of my physical body and all surrounding matter. During this past summer, I started embodied practices. One day, I held hands with a group of people and slowly walked from the beach into the ocean. It took us one hour. One evening, I was alone in the studio with a huge window facing the jungle. …

Memeganda, Zhengxiang Huang May 2025

Memeganda, Zhengxiang Huang

Masters Theses

MEMEGANDA investigates how meme culture and speculative design can transform everyday objects into covert communication tools under authoritarian censorship. In environments where digital expression is heavily restricted, memes—often dismissed as entertainment—emerge as a powerful medium of resistance. This thesis reimagines physical artifacts such as delivery helmets, receipt printers, and hotel carts as vehicles for hidden messages, bypassing digital surveillance systems. Drawing on personal experience, historical symbolism, and global examples like the White Paper Movement and banned protest songs, the project centers blue-collar workers as unlikely messengers of dissent. By embedding emotional, political, and satirical content into mundane urban materials, MEMEGANDA …

How To Walk On Water: Living Through The Absurd, Esther Du May 2025

How To Walk On Water: Living Through The Absurd, Esther Du

Masters Theses

Set in a speculative world submerged by water, this thesis constructs a fragmented, nonlinear narrative that reflects on survival, memory, and displacement in the aftermath of catastrophe. Through three interwoven chapters—The Outcast, The Researcher, and The World—the project explores the emotional and psychological landscapes of individuals navigating a post-apocalyptic existence where the past is irretrievable and the future uncertain. Using an interdisciplinary form of visual storytelling, writing, and sound, the work draws from personal experience and collective trauma to examine how people reconstruct identity and meaning after loss. Rather than offering a definitive answer to existential …

Tierras Celosas, Gery Vargas May 2025

Tierras Celosas, Gery Vargas

Masters Theses

Tierras Celosas is a field study, a symposium presentation at Brown University, a belief system. It is a machine-object, a cosmotechnic tension, an ontological contradiction. It embodies resistance and release, failure, and reclamation.

Rewilding, Hanna Kaye Sosin May 2025

Rewilding, Hanna Kaye Sosin

Graduate Artistry Projects and Performances

Rewilding attempts to bridge the distance between humanity and nature through play and embodied play. To speak to the permeability of humans to their environment, Hanna Sosin references a wide range of inspirations from Biochemistry and population dynamics to poetry and folklore. Each work is an exploration between medium and substrate to make an open ended narrative; they are improvisations based off of the surface of a panel, the expansion and contraction of a tunnel book, or a series of indelible marks made in balsa wood. Characters and symbols such as the match or candle people repeat throughout her work …

Breathing With Water; Rebuilding Coastal Connections In Busan, Seri Kwon May 2025

Breathing With Water; Rebuilding Coastal Connections In Busan, Seri Kwon

Masters Theses

What does it mean to live on the edge? Every year, sea level is rising and massive storms are hitting the peninsula of South Korea. With each catastrophic typhoon comes significant social damage due to relocations and loss of life. To these disastrous events, the city seems to have only one response: tetrapods and sea walls. This defensive approach has blinded the public from the severity of the looming climate crisis and kept them ignorant of more productive ways to manage the shoreline.

This thesis explores an alternative narrative for this coast. Working within a 75 year timeline, I propose …

Belonging In Memory, Yilin Li May 2025

Belonging In Memory, Yilin Li

Masters Theses

This book is a visual and textual exploration of belonging, memory, and the sublime found in the mundane. Through a combination of written reflections and curated artworks, it traces my artistic journey, showcasing how I search for belonging through memory, everyday life, personal witness, family dynamics, and cultural memory.

The first part delves into the intimate connections between everyday life and artistic inspiration, weaving together personal experiences, observations, and memories into imaginative narratives. The second part presents a chronological selection of my artworks, illustrating my artistic evolution. Initially, my work responded to China’s rapid urbanization, exploring fading personal and collective …

Out Of Consumption Out Of Context Into Recursion, Xubai Li May 2025

Out Of Consumption Out Of Context Into Recursion, Xubai Li

Masters Theses

In a world where consumption is inevitable, our choices define us. However, the situation is never so black and white. The boundary between commodification and authentic representations has grown increasingly opaque, layered with irony, sincerity, critique, and tribute.

Within this complexity lies not a clear resistance, but an opportunity: to embrace the oscillation and locate one’s authenticity through metamodernist sensibilities.

My process begins by interrogating the accepted—may it be a product, a technique, or a medium. I deconstruct, fragment, and remove it from its original context—both physically and conceptually.

What emerges is a recursive reconstruction, where origin and iteration intertwine, …

Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu May 2025

Rural Dreams, Zongda Wu

Masters Theses

With the rapid development of urbanization in China, people's connection with nature has weakened, leading to an increasingly common phenomenon of nature-deficit disorder. The high-paced, information-saturated lifestyle of cities has further reduced people’s sensitivity to natural rhythms. This is especially true for the younger generation, who are accustomed to fast, dense information flows and find it difficult to slow down and engage meaningfully with nature, even when visiting rural areas.

This study uses the ruins of Puji Temple, located about 50 miles from downtown Beijing, to explore how spatial design can offer urban youth opportunities to reconnect with nature while …

Cohabitation At Threshold: Carpenter House Reimagined For Multispecies Living, Zhixiao Yang May 2025

Cohabitation At Threshold: Carpenter House Reimagined For Multispecies Living, Zhixiao Yang

Masters Theses

With the rapid growth of the human population, we are encroaching further into wildlife habitats, particularly those surrounding urban environments. This accelerating urbanization leads to biodiversity loss, the degradation of ecological services essential to human health and well-being, and a diminishing connection between city dwellers and the natural world.

Today, urban planners, architects, economists, and other advocates for the future of humanity and the health of the planet are actively questioning how we might build greener, more resilient cities. While much of the focus has been on large-scale interventions — such as the use of sustainable materials, the creation of …

Unseen, But There, Xinyu Dong May 2025

Unseen, But There, Xinyu Dong

Masters Theses

Pedestrians often arrive at the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge in a hurry—rushing through daily routines—only to slow down or stop at its center. Here, they are drawn by the openness of the view, the rhythm of the wind, and a sense of pause that floats above the surface of the Providence River.

This thesis is an ongoing experiment in direct, sensory experience. It centers on this pedestrian bridge not just as a site of circulation, but as a space of unintentional stillness and layered perception. While many passersby are drawn to its scenic beauty, few pause to consider …

Faith In Conflict: The Role Of Religion In Conflict And Peacebuilding Among Minority Christian Communities In Ukraine And Palestine, Julia Lats May 2025

Faith In Conflict: The Role Of Religion In Conflict And Peacebuilding Among Minority Christian Communities In Ukraine And Palestine, Julia Lats

Honors Projects

Religion has long influenced both the escalation of conflicts and efforts toward peace. The wars in Ukraine and Palestine are deeply rooted in historical narratives, national identities, and religious influences. While the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is often framed in terms of Jewish-Muslim tensions and the issue of politicization of religion and tensions within the Orthodox Church frame the Ukrainian-Russian War, these dominant narratives often overlook the role of minority religious groups. This paper examines the contributions of Protestant Christian groups in these regions, exploring how their beliefs and practices influence their actions, identity formation, interactions with others, and approaches to conflict …

Relatos Corporales Con Ajustes Epistémicos De Cuando Un Cuerpo Humano Se Transformaba En Bufeo En El Río Napo, Nehemías Pino May 2025

Relatos Corporales Con Ajustes Epistémicos De Cuando Un Cuerpo Humano Se Transformaba En Bufeo En El Río Napo, Nehemías Pino

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Impact Of Social Motivation And Communication On Friendship And Loneliness In Autism, Rachael Roizer May 2025

Impact Of Social Motivation And Communication On Friendship And Loneliness In Autism, Rachael Roizer

Friendships and loneliness are both major contributors to happiness and life satisfaction. This study probes group differences in friendship and loneliness in autism, and their links to social motivation and social communication skills. This study includes participants with autism (n = 28), loss of autism diagnosis (n = 29), and neurotypical developmental histories (n = 36). Participants completed an online survey including measures of social motivation, social communication, friendship, and loneliness. Findings indicated group differences in social communication, friendship, and loneliness, but not social motivation. There were significant associations between social motivation and friendship, social communication and …

Looped Logic & Wild Lines, Shuting Shao May 2025

Looped Logic & Wild Lines, Shuting Shao

Masters Theses

What if an exhibition didn’t just present objects but actively pulled visitors into their world? This thesis explores that possibility by reimagining how furniture can be exhibited, using Misha Kahn’s All Tied Up Chair and Michael Thonet’s No. 14 Bentwood Chair as case studies. These two works sit at opposite ends of the design spectrum—Kahn’s chair is an explosion of color, texture, and playful chaos, while Thonet’s is an icon of industrial efficiency and graceful simplicity. Through spatial design, this exhibition translates their contrasting philosophies into immersive environments that extend beyond mere observation. The conventional use of neutral “White Cube” …

Soft Potential, Jennifer Choi May 2025

Soft Potential, Jennifer Choi

Masters Theses

“Soft Potential” highlights the potential of furniture and objects to encourage idiosyncratic and open usage through flexible, modular systems. I utilize modularity as a major tool in prompting interaction and transferring agency. Modular systems embody flexibility in form and function and enable people to tailor designs according to their own ideals. This reflects my aim of designing non-prescriptive work, exercising a soft approach to furniture design.

In this work, softness is a rejection of rigidity in support of human tenderness and agency. Softness in furniture can be both literal and metaphorical — embracing the contours of the human body while …

Lingering Loading, Chi Hao Chang May 2025

Lingering Loading, Chi Hao Chang

Masters Theses

In a culture that values speed, seamlessness, and instant clarity, Lingering Loading investigates how graphic design can slow down our ways of seeing and knowing. As technology, internet culture, and social media continue to condition us to expect immediate answers, we have become more passive in how we receive meaning. We scroll, absorb, and move on—often without time to ask what we truly think or feel. But in the increasingly rare moments of pause, something undefinable can happen.

To linger is not to delay progress, but to make space for participation—for meaning to emerge from within, not be delivered from …

Enactive Narrativities: Rubber-Times Historicity And Indigenous Media In Peruvian Amazonia, Gabriel Torrealba Alfonzo May 2025

Enactive Narrativities: Rubber-Times Historicity And Indigenous Media In Peruvian Amazonia, Gabriel Torrealba Alfonzo

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article analyzes the intersection between historicity and politics expressed in Kukama media-making practices. It examines the political and enactive dimensions involved in the Indigenous mediatization of rubber-era narratives in Peruvian Amazonia. I focus on the case of Radio Ucamara, a Kukama radio station from the Peruvian town of Nauta, and the ways in which they confront private and state powers through the production of digital and non-digital media. I specifically analyze Indigenous media-makers’ instrumentalizations of rubber-times narrativity by virtue of aesthetic mastery. Radio Ucamara media relies on a polyphonic strategy that encapsulates both narrative and meta-narrative discourses aimed to …

Interaction Of Liquid Phase Diisopropyl Methyl Phosphonate (Dimp) With Material Surrogates For Components Of Soil And Combustion Products Of Metal Fuels, Khushi Sunil Patel May 2025

Interaction Of Liquid Phase Diisopropyl Methyl Phosphonate (Dimp) With Material Surrogates For Components Of Soil And Combustion Products Of Metal Fuels, Khushi Sunil Patel

Theses

Combustion products of three different Al-based materials, Al-CaCO3, Al-SiO2, and Al-Fe2O3 , have been produced to understand their interaction with liquid diisopropyl methyl phosphonate (DIMP), a surrogate for chemical weapon agents. The purpose of this is to see which materials were more effective at DIMP adsorption and decomposition at different temperatures. Prepared materials were characterized using electron microscopy, x-ray powder diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption. Prepared powders were submerged in DIMP and heated in a thermal analyzer, tracking the mass changes as a function of temperature. Surfaces of the recovered materials were studied using …

Problematizing A Hegemonic English: An Assessment Of Language Use And Diversity In A Nation Of Immigrant Communities, Charlotte Choat May 2025

Problematizing A Hegemonic English: An Assessment Of Language Use And Diversity In A Nation Of Immigrant Communities, Charlotte Choat

Honors Projects

The increasing development of language diglossia between global English and local languages around the world raises questions of how the American linguistic character will react. In a culture defined by its lack of ethnolinguistic definition, can language localization occur? A study of language development in America requires a historical assessment of language contact, discourse, and dominance. The present state of American English is not the natural result or authentic representation of America’s population, but the outcome of language restrictionism and resource disparity enforced on many ethnolinguistic groups throughout American history. In the modern era of intensified immigration, ethnolinguistic diversity is …

Speech Camp: An Action Research Approach To Transformative Presentation Skills Coaching, Sherrie Torrey May 2025

Speech Camp: An Action Research Approach To Transformative Presentation Skills Coaching, Sherrie Torrey

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This synthesis explores the evolution of Speech Camp, a participant-centered coaching program developed by the author to support individuals with presentation anxiety to increased confidence in their communication. This program, developed through iterative redesign and informed by Action Research and Action Learning, reframes presentation skills development as a relational and reflective process rather than a performance-based task. The project draws upon theoretical frameworks—including Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory, Ryan and Deci’s Self-Determination Theory, and Mezirow’s Transformative Learning Theory—to analyze the program’s current methodology and curriculum to reveal how elements of structured reflection, peer engagement, and psychological safety promote meaningful internal change. Special …

The Risk Of Marginal Inclusion In The Fortune 500: A Quasi-Replication Of Lewis & Carlos (2023), W. Chad Carlos, Yasir Dewan, Ben W. Lewis, Brian P. Reschke, S. Isaac St. Clair May 2025

The Risk Of Marginal Inclusion In The Fortune 500: A Quasi-Replication Of Lewis & Carlos (2023), W. Chad Carlos, Yasir Dewan, Ben W. Lewis, Brian P. Reschke, S. Isaac St. Clair

Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom suggests that being included in an exclusive ranking leads to positive external evaluations. However, Lewis and Carlos (2023) found that firms situated near the threshold for inclusion on the 100 Best Corporate Citizen ranking were devalued by investors. To assess the generalizability of this surprising finding, we quasi-replicate and extend this finding by applying the same regression discontinuity design to the Fortune 500 ranking. We find corroborating evidence: firms near the bottom of the Fortune 500 receive lower external evaluations, not only from investors but also from industry peers. Our findings therefore quasi-replicate and extend Lewis and Carlos’ …

Sociology: Culture, Marcia Morrison May 2025

Sociology: Culture, Marcia Morrison

Open Educational Resources

This work examine culture. It begins by examining the foundations of culture to include norms, values, language, symbols and knowledge. In looking at each, it breaks down the implication of each to the development of ourselves as well as the person in the environment. It moves on to look at contexts of culture such as dominant cultures juxtapose to competing cultural systems, and how the various elements of culture can serve to either promote or minimize the various cultural constructs within society.

Media Patrol Stories: Examining The Counter-Hegemonic Power Of Citizen Journalism In The Philippines, Ricky R. Rosales May 2025

Media Patrol Stories: Examining The Counter-Hegemonic Power Of Citizen Journalism In The Philippines, Ricky R. Rosales

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

The traditional practice of journalism by business-oriented media in the Philippines produces and disseminates news and information according to their own self-imposed criteria and institutionalized set of routines that favor the ideas of the dominant social class. This article examines the conditions under which citizen journalism functions as a counter-hegemonic practice within a highly commercialized broadcast media environment in the said country. Drawing on interviews with three long-time citizen volunteers affiliated with ABS-CBN’s Bayan Mo I-Patrol Mo program and an autoethnographic account of newsroom production, the study introduces the concept of “counter-hegemonic communities” to foreground the role of community stories …

Framing The Sudanese Refugee Flows To Egypt Across Traditional And Social Media., Ghada Abdullah May 2025

Framing The Sudanese Refugee Flows To Egypt Across Traditional And Social Media., Ghada Abdullah

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the framing of Sudanese refugees in Egyptian media during the first year of the Sudanese conflict (April 2023–March 2024). Employing a content analysis framework, the research investigates content from three Egyptian newspapers—Al Ahram, Al Masry Al Youm, and Al Wafd—alongside tweets from the social media platform X. The study identifies recurring frames, themes, and narratives, highlighting differences between traditional media and social media platforms in their portrayal of Sudanese refugees. Key findings reveal that neutral tone dominate traditional media, focusing on factual reporting, followed by negative, then positive tones. Conversely, social media predominantly features negative narratives, such …

A Novel Framework For Dynamic Graph Representation Learning With Mamba, Ashish Pandey May 2025

A Novel Framework For Dynamic Graph Representation Learning With Mamba, Ashish Pandey

Theses

Dynamic graph embedding is a key technique for modeling temporal dependencies in evolving networks. While transformer-based models perform well, their quadratic complexity limits scalability on long graph sequences. This thesis compares transformer approaches with the Mamba architecture-a linear-complexity state-space model—for temporal graph embedding.

Two frameworks are proposed: DG-Mamba and GDG-Mamba. DG-Mamba uses standard GCN-based spatial encoding, while GDG-Mamba incorporates domain-aware edge features using Graph Isomorphism Network with Edge Convolution (GraphGINE). Experiments on UCI, Reality Mining, Slashdot, Bitcoin-OTC, and SBM datasets show that Mamba-based models match or exceed transformer performance, especially on graphs with high temporal variability.

The thesis also applies …

Constructing Portraits Of Elementary Teachers Of Ethnic Studies: Examining The Narratives Of Anti-Racist Educators In An Era Of Common Core Curriculum And Instruction, Jennifer S. Manglicmot May 2025

Constructing Portraits Of Elementary Teachers Of Ethnic Studies: Examining The Narratives Of Anti-Racist Educators In An Era Of Common Core Curriculum And Instruction, Jennifer S. Manglicmot

Dissertations

The emergence of policies requiring ethnic studies courses in California’s secondary and higher education institutions amplified calls for anti-racist pedagogy and content in all K-12 grade levels. Currently, little empirical research exists on how ethnic studies is taught in elementary school classrooms. This absence is significant because instruction in these settings tend to focus heavily on meeting state content standards (i.e. Common Core), frameworks which have been critiqued as ignoring communities of Color epistemologies and promoting color-evasive ideologies, among other concerns. Through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, this qualitative multiple-case study explored how anti-racist and ethnic studies pedagogies are …
