Expertise In Magicians - Testing The Insight Hypothesis., Gustav Kuhn, Alice Pailhès, Gg Cole
School of Psychology
Over the past two decades an abundance of research has examined the psychological mechanisms underpinning magic effects in order to gain new insights into human cognition. As part of this endeavour, it has been suggested that the experience of performing tricks in front of live audiences has given magicians unique insights. The aim of the present paper was to examine the nature of this expertise and investigate the extent to which magicians understand non-magicians’ beliefs about magic and the effectiveness of specific magic principles. In Experiment 1 we describe the skills that magicians believe make them experts, and the type …
Masculine Traits In Female Serial Killers: A Qualitative Analysis, Ashley Polk
Masculine Traits In Female Serial Killers: A Qualitative Analysis, Ashley Polk
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Female serial killers represent a minority in criminal statistics; their cases offer significant insights regarding broader patterns of serial killing behavior. The purpose of this study is to understand the role masculine traits play in the lives of female serial killers. This study involved using a qualitative research method to understand specific characteristics of female serial killers with common masculine traits and childhood experiences. Common masculine traits researched in this study were lack of emotions, aggression, control, dominance, and manipulation. The trauma control model and the gender scheme theory were the theoretical frameworks for this study. Data were collected by …
An Approach To Stylometry Using Causal Language Models, Harrison F. Stropkay
An Approach To Stylometry Using Causal Language Models, Harrison F. Stropkay
Computer Science Senior Theses
We present a novel stylometric approach using large language models. By training separate models on individual authors' works, we find that each model achieves lower cross-entropy loss when predicting text from its training author compared to other authors' texts. Moreover, for any given text, the model trained on its true author’s corpus yields the lowest loss. We suggest that, in this way, a model trained on one author's works embodies the unique writing style of that author. We demonstrate our approach on works by eight known authors. This approach also confirms that R. P. Thompson wrote the well-studied 15th book …

An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Black Female Kinship Caregivers In Parenting Youth Aged 13-18, Tyla Wilder
An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Black Female Kinship Caregivers In Parenting Youth Aged 13-18, Tyla Wilder
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative phenomenological study explored how the intersection of identities related to race and gender shapes the lived experiences of Black female kinship caregivers raising youth aged 13–18. Drawing on Intersectionality Theory, the study sought to understand the caregiving challenges, emotional resilience, and systemic barriers encountered by this underrepresented population. Nine participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling and engaged in in-depth semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed that cultural norms and racialized gender expectations often compelled Black females to assume caregiving roles without institutional recognition or support. Participants described emotional isolation, financial instability, and limited access to legal and …

Race, Resources, And American Adolescents’ Mental Health During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Chineze Nkemeh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During the COVID-19 pandemic, African American adolescents experienced reduced access to needed resources and may have suffered poorer mental health outcomes as a result. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the association between race and the availability of mental health resources, food, medical health resources and mental health outcomes among African American adolescents in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to their White counterparts. The theoretical framework that grounded this study was the Socio Ecological Model. Secondary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey database were analyzed. These …

PARP inhibitors sensitize pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) to radiation by inducing DNA damage and replication stress. These mechanisms also have the potential to enhance radiation-induced type I interferon (T1IFN) mediated anti-tumoral immune responses. We hypothesized that the PARP inhibitor olaparib would also potentiate radiation-induced T1IFN to promote anti-tumor immune responses and sensitization of otherwise resistant PDAC to immunotherapy. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the effects of olaparib and radiation on T1IFN production and sensitivity to αPD-L1 immunotherapy, as well as on the tumor microenvironment by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). We found that olaparib enhanced T1IFN production following radiation and …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) are the most aggressive molecular subtypes of breast cancer. Poor clinical outcomes highlight the pressing need to discover novel targets for the effective treatment of these diseases. LMP7 (β5i/PSMB8), a proteolytic subunit of the immunoproteasome, is implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple myeloma, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, and inflammation-related cancers. However, the role of LMP7 in TNBC and IBC remains poorly characterized. Here, we evaluated the function of LMP7 in TNBC and IBC using the selective LMP7 inhibitor M3258. In human TNBC patient samples, LMP7 expression correlated strongly with CD8+ T …

Immunosuppressive myeloid cells are critical obstacles to T cell-centered immune checkpoint blockade therapies, which have been successful in treating a fraction of patients with cancer. How tumor cells interact with myeloid cells to regulate immune responses and tumor development is unclear. In this study, we report that certain membrane tyrosine kinase Eph receptors, including EphA7 and EphB1, specifically bind the immune inhibitory receptors leukocyte Ig-like receptor family B 5 (LILRB5) and LILRB2. These Eph receptors induce LILRB5-mediated signaling activation, and LILRB5 also activates Eph receptor signaling. Activation of LILRB5 promoted immunosuppressive marker expression and inhibited activating marker expression on myeloid …

Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) offer scalable solutions for addressing mental health needs, but low adherence remains a significant challenge. Single session DMHIs may offer a feasible alternative to address this issue, providing an accessible and low-effort option for users. The present study examines whether adding the choice of a single session DMHI in addition to a multi-session DMHI provides a feasible alternative for users who might otherwise disengage. This study examined naturalistic data from 509 university students who registered for a 12-session DMHI, single session DMHI, or both. The majority (58%) chose only the multi-session DMHI, while 24.2% chose …

Microvascular proliferation (MVP) is a disease-defining hallmark of glioblastoma and other World Health Organization grade 4 gliomas. MVP also serves as a poor prognostic marker in various solid tumors. Despite its clinical significance, the mechanisms and biological consequences of MVP are controversial and remain unclear. In this study, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing on paired CD45-CD105+ vascular/perivascular stromal cells (PVSC) and CD45+CD105± immune cells from 16 primary glioma patient samples, both with and without MVP. This analysis revealed the presence of developmentally related mesenchymal stem cells alongside cancer-associated fibroblasts, pericytes, fibromyocytes, and smooth muscle cells within the CD45-CD105+ compartment. RNA …

Is It Time To Scrap Stare Decisis?, Wilfred U. Codrington Iii

Shortly after returning to the presidency, Donald Trump terminated several independent federal officers, prompting legal action by employees who occupied government positions covered by statutory for cause removal protections long held constitutionally permissible and valid. Eventually, one or more suits alleging unlawful termination owing to the removal without cause will reach the Supreme Court to be decided on the merits. Having steadily narrowed the Humphrey’s Executor line of cases that insulate these officers, the Court now seems poised to displace that precedent entirely. In isolation, the overruling would mark a seismic doctrinal shift and major advance in legal conservatism's pursuit …

Kaiso Mediates Transcription And Rna Splicing In Colorectal Carcinoma: Role Of Brca1 In The Kaiso Enhanceosome, Weifeng Luo, Manish Kumar Tripathi, Qi Liu, Lei Chen, Robert W. Cowan, Juliet M. Daniel, Chi Yan, Ann Richmond, Albert B. Reynolds
School of Medicine Publications
Kaiso (ZBTB33) is a transcription factor involved in mitotic clonal expansion and tumorigenesis in association with Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) loss of heterozygosity. ENCODE data show strong overlap of the Kaiso promoter-binding site—encode-derived Kaiso-binding site (eKBS) and many other transcription factors, including BRCA1. Here we sought to determine whether BRCA1 is a component of the Kaiso enhanceosome that regulates gene transcription. Using proximal ligation assays, immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectrometry, luciferase assays and ChIP-seq experiments, we evaluated the association between BRCA1 and Kaiso. Kaiso nuclear extract immunoprecipitation experiments revealed that Kaiso associates strongly with genes involved in RNA splicing and …

“Did I Say That?”: Introducing An Oral Process To Reflective Practice To Enhance Student Learning In A Final Year Project, Bairbre Brennan, David Gaul
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
This paper reviews the introduction of an oral reflective component to a final year class practical assignment. Drawing on the theory of student involvement, feedback literacy, and the literature relating to reflective practice, the redesign of the assignment repositions the student at the centre of their own learning journey and as a sense-maker of their learning from their applied experiences. The positive outcomes in this case study suggest the approach is worthy of trialling in a wider context, to see if it is replicated and has an impact on learner attainment.

California's Imperial Valley, with lithium-rich geothermal brines, extensive flat agricultural fields with abundant desert sunshine, and access to transmission lines, is a leading case to explore interconnected themes around just energy transitions. Despite being the poorest county in California and one of the smallest, Imperial already provides 15% of the state’s solar electricity, and the region as a whole represents on the order of 25% of the state’s electric power capacity. This paper brings to light frictions over solar energy development that have emerged over the history of solar power development in the southern Salton Sea region. It describes the …

Importance Of Outbreak Response Research In Bridging Knowledge Gaps On Emerging Infectious Diseases, Robert F Breiman, David Wang, Michael Diamond, Adrianus C M Boon, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
An important outcome of the devastating 2014 West African Ebola virus disease outbreak and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has been the growing promotion of conducting research during outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) as a valuable and acceptable process of acquiring knowledge to enhance our ability to better prevent and control these diseases in the future. Recognising the unique opportunity during outbreaks to leverage increases in cases over a short time interval and in a circumscribed area, we articulate a systematic process of conducting EID outbreak response research, highlighting knowledge gaps that should be prioritised, and measures that can be …

Wise Minds Wanted: Calling For Intellectual Virtue In A Post-Truth Era, Lisa Devall-Martin
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
In Healthy Christian Minds, Elmer Thiessen offers a thought-provoking exploration of intellectual virtues and vices, challenging readers to cultivate wisdom, humility, and principled openness in an age of division. While not written specifically for educators, this book holds deep relevance for those shaping minds inside and outside the classroom. Thiessen argues that true intellectual excellence is not just about acquiring knowledge but about developing character; an idea that resonates with those committed to fostering critical thinking and integrity in their students. Drawing from theology and philosophy, he examines the dangers of closed-mindedness and arrogance while encouraging a love of truth …

The Experience Of Being A Christian Public School Teacher, Carrie Birmingham
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This research asks, “What is the experience of being a Christian teacher in a public school?” Analysis of semistructured interviews with 16 Christian public school teachers revealed that, while this experience is highly variable and contextualized, teachers experienced four common concerns, making visible how teachers’ religious identity shapes their purpose for teaching, their interactions with supports and oppositions, their values for themselves and for their students, and their perspectives on Christian witness and teaching in their public school settings.
