Sample Storage Method And Collection Time Effects On Horse Hair Cortisol Concentrations, Grace Robertson, Savannah Rivers, Thomas Powell, Shea Porr Jun 2025

Sample Storage Method And Collection Time Effects On Horse Hair Cortisol Concentrations, Grace Robertson, Savannah Rivers, Thomas Powell, Shea Porr

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

Serum cortisol concentration is the gold standard for evaluating stress in horses. However, it can be affected by circadian rhythms, environmental factors, and other excitatory events. Hair cortisol is less subject to these variables and is less invasive to collect, but there is a lack of published information on hair cortisol concentrations in horses. The objectives of this study were to examine 1) the impact of sample storage (Room temperature vs. Frozen) and 2) the effect of collection date (spring vs. fall), on cortisol concentration in equine hair. It was hypothesized that Frozen samples would yield higher concentrations than Room …

Children In Foster Care: Outcomes And Nursing Implications, Rachel A. Joseph, Emily Etterman Jun 2025

Children In Foster Care: Outcomes And Nursing Implications, Rachel A. Joseph, Emily Etterman

Wisdom & Compassion: The LUSON Journal

Background: Approximately 407,000 children remained in the foster care system by the end of 2020, with 217,000 entering and 224,000 exiting the system. The foster care system is meant to be a temporary living arrangement for children born into or raised in non-flourishing homes. However, the uniqueness of the system and the interactions of foster parents lead to undesirable foster home situations while the child is left in the system for longer times. The child in foster care faces several adverse life events that make it difficult for the child to develop into a successful adult. Purpose: This paper examines …

Research Integrity In The Era Of Generative Artificial Intelligence, Andrea Wilson, Cheryl Burleigh

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Protecting research integrity is crucial for maintaining trust in the scholarly record. Historically, threats to research integrity stemmed from deliberate human actions, such as data manipulation and misrepresentation. Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is increasingly prevalent in higher education and is capable of generating research data and scholarly papers almost instantly. The immediate production of research data challenges traditional standards of academic rigor and integrity. The purpose of this study was to explore the role and impact of GAI on research integrity and the scholarly record, emphasizing the need for robust safeguards. For this study, we submitted Likert-type survey questions to …

Protecting Against Use-After-Free Exploits With Multiple Policy-Limited Memory Heaps, Joshua Mason Jun 2025

Protecting Against Use-After-Free Exploits With Multiple Policy-Limited Memory Heaps, Joshua Mason

Defensive Publications Series

Bugs or errors in handling memory allocation and deallocation can lead to use-after-free (UAF) vulnerabilities. Such cases involve programs accessing memory locations that have been freed by deallocation. Malicious actors try to exploit UAF vulnerabilities to cause various adverse effects with potentially severe operational consequences. This disclosure presents an alternative protection approach by replacing the use of a single memory heap with multiple policy-limited memory heaps. At runtime, each of the distinct memory heaps can be randomly assigned a policy to limit the type(s) of objects that can exist within it. The random policy assignment reduces the likelihood of malicious …

Managing Flash-Memory Reliability By Proactive Monitoring Of Bit Error Rate, Na Jun 2025

Managing Flash-Memory Reliability By Proactive Monitoring Of Bit Error Rate, Na

Defensive Publications Series

The lifespan of NAND-based flash memories is limited by physical properties of flash cells. The reliability of retrieving data stored in flash memories can deteriorate over time. This disclosure describes techniques to manage flash-memory reliability by monitoring bit error rate (BER) per physical memory block and by taking certain actions based on the observed BER. Such actions include ignoring BERs that are low enough to be recovered by an error-correcting code (ECC) without impacting performance or reliability and notifying the processor if the BER rises to high levels. Ignoring low BERs, e.g., not escalating low BER rates to the processor, …

This article is intended to be an account of our scientific project, a project carried out by crossing disciplinary boundaries, going through several stages in order to achieve more decompartmentalized research, to adopt a multidisciplinary approach of stylistic, genetic and computer science. In order to approach the complex question of style in Flaubert, the one which represents the sovereign image of the writer par excellence, we followed in an initial phase a philological study, resembling the "study of genesis" in vogue at the turn of the century of the 19th and 20th centuries. After this work carried out on the …

The dedramatization of public speaking often remains at the center of requests for training in “expression”. Breaking the silence often represents an act of great violence for the student. Who is the player ? who is the played ? For around fifteen years, to understand the micro-rituals, the unspoken gestures of daily life, teaching throught theatre or role-playing has been provided in our schools and universities.

Why the choice of dramatic play? Theater presents this rare particularity of designating in a clear and visible way the two inseparable instances of all cultural practice: the actor and the spectator. If many …

The words of the other abound in Milan Kundera's novels. In what forms is this discursive otherness textualized ? What is its massive and quasi-systematic use for ? These two questions are at the heart of this article devoted to the study of reported speech in Kunderian fiction. The hypothesis that we would like to support here is that this novelistic scenography of reported speech responds to a polyphonic project conducive to the interaction of voices and points of view, with a view to revealing the world.

In the digital age, new literary forms are emerging within the post-modernist novel, particularly in french. The latter, whose aesthetic and formal construction, increasingly draws on media or artistic motifs that orient literary writing towards new aesthetic and discursive practices that break with structuralist formalism, most often based on the classic narrative schema of Julien Greimas or the actantial schema of Vladimir Propp. Thus, we are talking today about the interdisciplinary or polydisciplinary, hydrid or transcultural text, wich integrates paraliterary motifs such as the media with the aim of creating a new “vision of the world” based on exchange and …

Character Relationship Prediction In Movies: Toward Emotionally-Aware Automatic Audio Descriptions, Seung Hyun Hahm Jun 2025

Character Relationship Prediction In Movies: Toward Emotionally-Aware Automatic Audio Descriptions, Seung Hyun Hahm

Computer Science Senior Theses

Automatic audio description (AD) systems support visually impaired audiences by narrating visual content, but they often fail to capture the interpersonal dynamics that underpin narrative understanding. In this work, we introduce a novel framework for character relationship prediction as a means of enriching audio descriptions with socially grounded context. Our contributions are threefold: (1) we propose the Character Relationship Module (CRM), which extends identity-aware video captioning with directed sentiment inference between character pairs; (2) we develop a scalable weak supervision pipeline that uses large language models to generate 669,520 relationship annotations across 202 films; and (3) we construct a complementary …

Computer Science Student Research

There have been substantial changes in the landscape of technology use by children in Global South during COVID-19, when the shift to online learning platforms necessitated parents to avail personal devices (e.g., smartphones, computers) for their children to fulfill their educational needs. However, the use of devices by children are not limited to serving educational purpose only. Our study positions itself in a critical post-pandemic period in Nepal, characterized by the increase in device use by children, while a little study to date, investigated parental mediation in this developing country. To this end, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 parents, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The sensitivity of ram semen to cryobiological procedures has motivated many researchers to investigate this issue. In clinical practice, one of the main objectives is to reduce the damage caused by freezing cells through the addition of preservatives to semen diluents. In our study, fetal calf serum (15% FCS) and 3–6 mM cysteamine were added to ram semen diluents, and their effects on semen after freeze-thawing were investigated. Semen was collected from five Kıvırcık rams using an electroejaculator and combined in equal volumes (pooling). After macroscopic and microscopic examination, the samples were divided into six equal volumes. Six study groups …

In this capstone thesis project, a simulation unit on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is used to combine the teaching of literature with the teaching of critical media literacy. Research encompassing the need for teaching literature and media literacy, media literacy as an essential component of citizenship, and Generation Alpha’s challenges and needs in the classroom precedes a literature review on gamified and game-based learning. The challenges of teaching Generation Alpha in a post-pandemic world make gamified and game-based learning an important topic in the field of education. Today’s students struggle with traditional learning styles, but multiple studies show that they …

Pesticides As Multiple Stressors To Bivalves And Echinoderms, Alexandra Gabrielle Tissot Jun 2025

Pesticides As Multiple Stressors To Bivalves And Echinoderms, Alexandra Gabrielle Tissot

Dissertations and Theses

Pesticides are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, alongside numerous contaminants and other stressors that can result in combined exposure to target and non-target organisms. Nevertheless, traditional toxicity studies quantify the effects of these compounds at an individual level, and to a narrow range of traditional test organisms. Through this dissertation, I explored the presence and effects of commonly detected pesticides of concern in the Pacific Northwest in order to realistically quantify potential effects from combined stressors. In Chapter 2, I demonstrated my background knowledge on these select pesticides (atrazine, bifenthrin, diuron, indaziflam, and imidacloprid), including their chemical and physical properties. Using …
