Parental Attitudes To Risky Play And Children’S Independent Mobility: Public Health Implications For Children In Ireland, Fiona Armstrong, Michael Joseph Barrett, David Gaul, Lorraine D’Arcy

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Background: Understanding the determinants of children’s outdoor play is an important element for child development and broader public health outcomes. There is growing evidence that children’s opportunities for play, particularly outdoor risky play, are diminishing. Parents are concerned with keeping their child safe while affording them independence to play. This study explored parents’ attitudes to risky play and practices around children’s independent mobility in Ireland with the aim of informing public health strategies promoting healthy childhood environments. Methods: An online survey comprising validated scales and standardised questions was completed by a nationally represented sample of 376 parents of children up …

Macroscopic Roughness Modeling Of Satellite Multi-Layer Insulation Reflectance, Kevin P. Donnelly Jul 2025

Macroscopic Roughness Modeling Of Satellite Multi-Layer Insulation Reflectance, Kevin P. Donnelly

Theses

Reflectance modeling of specular surfaces with irregular geometries remains difficult to solve for an array of applications. In the growing space industry, there are many spacecraft materials with high specularity and varying levels of roughness. Modeling these materials in simulations becomes difficult as any realistic amount of roughness is added, necessitating more accurate physical models to represent how light is interacting with these surfaces. While some work has been done to attempt to characterize the spectral signatures of the materials themselves using hyperspectral imaging systems, the scope of these efforts has been fairly limited and not representative of the conditions …

Effects Of Staphylococcal Superantigen-Like Protein 11 (Ssl11) On The Host Immune Response During Lung Infection, Sajani Ghaju Jul 2025

Effects Of Staphylococcal Superantigen-Like Protein 11 (Ssl11) On The Host Immune Response During Lung Infection, Sajani Ghaju

LSU Master's Theses

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is an opportunistic pathogen that produces numerous immune evasion molecules that target various components of the host immune defense to cause infection. One of these is a family of virulence factors, Staphylococcal superantigen-like proteins (SSLs) with 14 members that exhibit host immune-evasion functions. SSL11 has been reported to inhibit neutrophil migration, preventing its recruitment to sites of infection. However, its role in vivo and effect on neutrophil phagocytosis have not been known. This thesis focuses on studying the effect of recombinant SSL11 protein in an in vivo S. aureus-induced pneumonia model and in vitro …

Immune dysfunction and late mortality from multiorgan failure are hallmarks of severe sepsis. Arginine, a semi-essential amino acid important for protein synthesis, immune response, and circulatory regulation, is deficient in sepsis. However, arginine supplementation in sepsis remains controversial due to the potential to upregulate inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)-mediated excessive nitric oxide (NO) generation in macrophages, leading to vasodilation and hemodynamic catastrophe. Citrulline supplementation has been considered an alternative to replenishing arginine via de novo synthesis, orchestrated by argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1) and argininosuccinate lyase (ASL). However, the functional relevance of the ASS1-ASL pathway in macrophages after endotoxin stimulation is …

Revalidation Of The Child Routines Questionnaire: Preschool, Christian Olivia Ledet Jul 2025

Revalidation Of The Child Routines Questionnaire: Preschool, Christian Olivia Ledet

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The implementation of consistent, structured routines is considered a positive parenting practice that enhances child development and is a protective factor for developing externalizing behavior problems, particularly for preschool-age children as they learn to regulate their behavior. In recent years, electronic media consumption has increased among children of all ages, and excessive use is related to negative outcomes for children. Thus, a measure assessing routines of preschool children with items related to electronic media routines is important to further understand how routines affect children’s emotional and behavioral regulation and their interactions with their parents. The purpose of the current study …

The Qualitative Report

Too frequently, traditional research centers the wounded-subject position (Brown, 1995), which reduces minoritized individuals to their experiences of discrimination, perpetuating deficit-based narratives, oppression, and existing power dynamics. To counter traditional research frameworks and deficit-based narratives, we used photovoice methodology (Wang & Burris, 1997) to honor and celebrate the healing experiences of nine queer womxn of color (QWoC). The photovoice project explored the healing experiences of QWoC inside and outside counseling and lead to the curation of a photovoice exhibit to share their stories of resilience and power. This article outlines our approach to organizing a photovoice exhibit and our experiences …

Medetomidine, a veterinary α2-adrenergic agonist, has recently emerged as an adulterant in the non-medical opioid supply, yet human exposure has remained poorly characterized. We conducted a pragmatic retrospective cohort analysis utilizing chart review and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) toxicology testing on available urine samples from patients presenting to two hospitals in Philadelphia, PA, who fit two clinical phenotypes, intoxication or withdrawal. Samples also underwent glucuronidase pre-treatment to assess impact on the yield of medetomidine and xylazine metabolite detection. Testing identified universal exposure to medetomidine (58/58 samples) via the 3-hydroxy-medetomidine (3-OH-M) metabolite, post glucuronidase treatment and variable xylazine exposure (40/58 …

The Cre/loxP system is widely used for site-specific genetic manipulation in mice. The PgrCre mouse model, where Cre recombinase is driven by the progesterone receptor promoter, is commonly used for gene ablation in Pgr-positive uterine cells. However, the PgrCre is active in the neonatal uterus and does not allow temporal control. To enhance the functionality of the PgrCre mouse, we generated and characterized an inducible PgriCreERT2 mouse, in which iCreERT2 is inserted downstream of the endogenous Pgr promoter. PgriCreERT2 mice crossed with Rosa26-CAG-LSL-Sun1-sfGFP-myc reporter mice demonstrated tamoxifen-dependent recombination in uterine stromal fibroblasts and a subset of epithelial cells. Tamoxifen-induced ablation …

Relationship Between Mindfulness And Eudaimonic Well-Being In A Thai Adult Sample: Roles Of Hope And Meaning In Life, Somboon Jarukasemthawee, David B. Feldman, Kullaya Pisitsungkagarn, David C. Wang

Counseling Psychology

We examine the relationship between mindfulness and eudaimonic well-being in Thai adults, a population largely overlooked in mindfulness research despite the strong influence of Buddhism within this culture. Specifically, we hypothesized that hope and meaning will account for variance in this relationship. Utilizing self-report measures for mindfulness, hope, meaning in life, and eudaimonic well-being, findings from a sample of 269 Thai adults revealed significant positive correlations between all of these constructs and eudaimonic well-being. Regression analyses also indicated that hope and meaning in life accounted for statistically significant variance in the relationship between mindfulness and eudaimonic well-being and that mindfulness, …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Dual supply chains with green and non-green products are an important aspect of supply chain management, which enable companies to balance traditional operations with ethical and eco-friendly practices to reduce carbon emissions. This study proposed a novel approach that combines the Probabilistic Simplified Neutrosophic Set (PSNS) with the Ranking of Alternatives Method (RAM) for the selection of best strategy selection for dual supply chains with green and non-green products. The novel approach uses PSNS as a representation of uncertainty, by incorporating probabilistic degrees of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity, which occurred in real life situations. Furthermore, RAM illustrates efficient ranking and …

A Dynamic Leadership Approach In Different Situations And Contexts, Francois Kammoe

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This paper is one of the first to provide empirical evidence supporting the conceptualization of a dynamic leadership approach in which employee maturity and organizational dynamism help leaders make the right choice of leadership styles to improve employee job satisfaction. As business environments change and employee maturity differs in this dynamic business era, and as there is a chaos characterized by numerous leadership styles in the leadership literature, adopting a dynamic leadership approach has become important to identify the most effective leadership styles suitable for employees. A quantitative study using conditional process analysis was conducted to examine a dynamic leadership …

Evolving Leadership And Increased Wisdom – Understanding Ethical Leadership, Tangela Rutledge, Cam Caldwell Jul 2025

Evolving Leadership And Increased Wisdom – Understanding Ethical Leadership, Tangela Rutledge, Cam Caldwell

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Laying the foundation for understanding ethical leadership, we begin this paper by identifying a framework for understanding the leader’s roles based upon five dimensions for understanding leadership’s duties and responsibilities. We present a model for ethical decision making that addresses the complex factors of ethical decision-making based upon a virtuous continuum. We then review five levels of leadership identified by Jim Collins (2001) in his research about leaders – identifying the special significance of Level 5 leaders who enabled their companies to evolve from “Good” to “Great.” We describe the characteristics of leaders in each of Collins’ five leadership levels …

Crafting Ethical Problem-Solving Cultures: A Leader’S Role In Complex Adaptive Systems, Elizabeth A. Luckman Jul 2025

Crafting Ethical Problem-Solving Cultures: A Leader’S Role In Complex Adaptive Systems, Elizabeth A. Luckman

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

In today’s complex and interconnected world, leaders play a critical role in fostering ethical problem-solving cultures within organizations. To enable leaders to succeed in this evolving landscape, this paper advocates for a necessary paradigm shift: a transition in mental models about how organizations function. Historically, organizations have been viewed as mechanistic systems, but there is a substantial opportunity to improve our work by viewing organizations as complex adaptive systems. This shift alters fundamental assumptions about organizational operations and redefines leadership as the creation of conditions for effective and ethical problem-solving. In this paper, I examine the changing mental models that …

Censorship In The Media Jul 2025

Censorship In The Media

Communication Research Trends

The principle of freedom of expression in the press, book publishing and broadcasting has been one of the hard-won battles in human history. Without this freedom, a democratic society,, could not exist. Yet every community and nation has to make painful decisions about what will, or will not be communicated. Libel and privacy are obvious examples. Otherwise our societies would virtually disintegrate. Does freedom of speech have limits? If so, how do we decide on these limits?

New forms of censorship are always creeping in. Currently it is insinuated that consumer protection groups such as Action for Children's Television in …

For most of us, getting information is still a matter of seeking out some expert or a "trusted friend" . Or we pore through books, newspapers, and professional reports hoping to find the precise information we need. Now the linking of computers to a television screen promises an information revolution in our lives. Sitting in the comfort of our homes or offices with a keypad in hand, we will be able to call up on the screen literally any sort of information from any part of the world.

Like the initial stages of cinema, radio and television, the next ten …

Television's Influence On Cultures Jul 2025

Television's Influence On Cultures

Communication Research Trends

It is widely assumed by the public, broadcasters and some communication researchers that television has caused major shifts in contemporary world view and values. McLuhan introduced the notion that the form of the medium itself- the simultaneous sound and vision - has brought about a new intuitive, holistic pattern of thinking. For McLuhan, the generation gap is the product of a television generation. Gerbner sees television as the central cultural arm of American society. Like a religion, it is the chief source of repetitive and ritualised symbol systems cultivating the consciousness of mass publics.

Others think that the process is …

The Language Of Film And Television

Communication Research Trends

An increasing number of people receive most of their news, entertainment and even religious inspiration through the visual media of film, television or illustrated magazines. We all "watch" television.James Monaco notes that some cats watch television attentively! But how well do we grasp the specific language of the visual media?

In countries such as the U.S., there is evidence that the post-1950 generation that has grown up with television has a pattern of thinking more attuned to the visual than to print media. Yet, some cross-cultural studies suggest that many American children, for all of the long hours of TV …

Unfinished Business: An Analysis Of The Permanent Forum On People Of African Descent, Satang Nabaneh

Journal of African Policy Studies

Communities of African descent worldwide experience persistent structural discrimination, manifested in poverty, underdevelopment, marginalization, social exclusion, and economic disparities. The historical crimes of enslavement, the transatlantic trade of enslaved Africans, apartheid, and colonialism, recognized as crimes against humanity and potentially constituting genocide, have left enduring trauma and systemic repercussions. These atrocities are demonstrably linked to current disparities in health, welfare, and the fulfillment of human rights for people of African descent. The International Decade for People of African Descent (2015 to 2024), proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 under the theme “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice …

Earthjustice: The Role Of The African Regional Human Rights System In Containing Climate Change, Bright Nkrumah, Ebenezer Durojaye, Maria Usang Assim

Journal of African Policy Studies

At the turn of the millennium, the landscape of Africa has been punctuated by intense weather conditions. With a disproportionate percentage of the continent’s population bearing the brunt of climate-induced heatwaves, deluges, and drought, it is expected that this phenomenon will spur regional climate litigation. The essay argues that although there is an evolution of climate cases submitted at the national level, this development has not evolved to the African regional human rights system. The lack of cases at the regional level beckons one to explore why (potential)victims are unable or unwilling to explore these mechanisms given their role in …
