Critical Communication Pedagogy At The End Of The World, Tyler S. Rife
Critical Communication Pedagogy At The End Of The World, Tyler S. Rife
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This essay draws upon my experiences teaching the undergraduate course, “Communication at the End of the World,” to argue for an approach to critical communication pedagogy (CCP) contextualized by and reflexively responsive to planetary-scale ecological crises. I outline how five commitments have come to guide my classroom’s explorations through our topic of “end-times” communication: (1) Anthropocentrism and speciesism participate in the maintenance of social hierarchy; (2) environmental justice and social justice are intimately entangled projects; (3) ecological crisis is (re)made concrete, embodied, proximal, and implicative; (4) critique of language involves critique of humanism and humanist historicization; and, (5) ecologically just …
Addressing Black “Student Outsiders” At Aanapisi/Hsis: Toward (Radical) Transgressive Teaching For Black College Students In Higher Education, Nicholas B. Lacy
Addressing Black “Student Outsiders” At Aanapisi/Hsis: Toward (Radical) Transgressive Teaching For Black College Students In Higher Education, Nicholas B. Lacy
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Black students attending AANAPISI/HSI universities have long been overlooked in communication and interdisciplinary research. In this essay, I draw on bell hooks’s (2014) radical transgressive teaching and Patricia Hill Collins’s “outsider within” framework to examine the experiences of Black students at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) such as AANAPISIs and HSIs. Using my autoethnographic and autobiographical experiences as a Black student who graduated from two AANAPISI/HSIs, alongside recent literature on Black student experiences in these contexts, I explore how communication instructors at MSIs can improve engagement with Black students by establishing racially affirming curricula, instructional practices, and instructor-student rapport. I argue that …
Transgressing Media History, Ashley R. Kennard
Transgressing Media History, Ashley R. Kennard
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Traditional Mass Media History courses serve to uphold the status quo. Born out of the white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy, the myth of the inventor provides a powerful example of one of the ways these traditional ideologies and pedagogies persist. However, through building community, being vulnerable, co-constructing knowledge, including diversity, and rewriting history, a counter- hegemonic, transgressive approach to teaching communication history in the spirit of bell hooks is possible. This starts by creating transformative and inclusive communication classrooms that serve to dismantle the myth of the inventor.

Editor’S Note: Toward A Transgressive Communication Pedagogy: Reflections And Directions In/For Dark Times, Lionnell Smith
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This essay introduces a special section marking the 30th anniversary of bell hooks’s Teaching to Transgress, exploring its relevance within the current sociopolitical climate marked by intensified assaults on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in education. Grounded in hooks’s vision of education as a practice of freedom, this essay proposes a framework of transgressive communication pedagogy— an approach that champions radical love, political agency, and open dialogue to resist hegemonic educational structures. The featured contributions in this section examine transgressive practices across diverse contexts: community-based intercultural teaching, intersectional identity work, support for Black students in minority-serving institutions, decolonial approaches to …

Simmel’S Reification In The Digital Era: The Commodification Of Emotional Relationships In Rent-A-Partner Services On Social Media, Juliana Pramesti
Simmel’S Reification In The Digital Era: The Commodification Of Emotional Relationships In Rent-A-Partner Services On Social Media, Juliana Pramesti
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
This study examines the commodification of emotional relationships in Indonesia through the rise of “rent-a-partner” services on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Existing scholarship on digital intimacy has largely focused on Western and East Asian contexts, particularly dating applications, offering limited insight into how commodified intimacy operates in non-Western settings shaped by distinct socio-cultural and moral frameworks. Addressing this gap, the study draws on Georg Simmel’s concept of reification to analyze how emotional intimacy is transformed into purchasable service packages within platform-mediated environments. Using a qualitative approach that combines netnographic observation and in-depth interviews, the study demonstrates …

Central Halmahera In Power Relations, Development, And Environmental Crisis, Herman Usman
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
Abstract This paper analyzes the relationship between power relations, development, and environmental crisis in Central Halmahera, North Maluku, a region that has undergone socio-ecological changes due to the expansion of extractive industries, especially nickel mining. Such development is controlled by state actors and corporations, creating unequal power relations in which local communities are often marginalized. This development model based on natural resource extraction resulting in ecosystem degradation, water pollution, and the loss of living space for indigenous peoples and coastal communities. This paper uses the approaches of political ecology and the sociology of development, to examine how the state facilitates …

Will The Court Use Dobbs To Overturn Sullivan? Revisiting The Sullivan Decision In The Age Of Digital Media, Skylar Tess Ivey Detjen
Will The Court Use Dobbs To Overturn Sullivan? Revisiting The Sullivan Decision In The Age Of Digital Media, Skylar Tess Ivey Detjen
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
New York Times Co. v. Sullivan is a landmark Supreme Court decision that significantly expanded protection for the press under the First Amendment by limiting public officials’ ability to sue for defamation. The ruling established the “actual malice” standard, requiring public officials to prove that defamatory statements were made with knowledge of their falsity or with reckless disregard for the truth. In recent years, Justice Thomas has repeatedly criticized Sullivan, arguing that the decision is more a product of judicial policymaking than of constitutional interpretation, with minimal grounding in the text or history of the First or Fourteenth Amendments. …

College Application Mistakes And The Design Of Information Policies At Scale, Tomás Larroucau, Ignacio A. Rios, Anaïs Fabre, Christopher Neilson
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We examine whether large-scale information interventions can improve college application outcomes in a centralized admissions system. Using nationwide surveys from Chile, we document widespread information frictions and frequent application mistakes, such as omitting attainable preferred programs or failing to include safety options. To address these frictions, we partnered with the Ministry of Education to implement a large-scale field experiment that provided applicants with personalized information on admission probabilities and program characteristics through customized online platforms. The intervention increased the probability that previously unmatched students received an assignment by 44% and improved placement into higher-ranked programs by 20%. Building on these …

To Leave Or Not To Leave: Organizational Support Types, Utility And Employee Commitment, Zhe Dong
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Organizational support research has shown it to be a significant predictor of organizational commitment; however, specifying labeling support types and grouping them has rarely been done, let alone the utilization of the supports. In this study, undergraduate students were recruited to investigate how different types of organizational support and their utilization influence organizational commitment (OC), specifically the six types of support groups (monetary/financial, developmental, work-life balance, health and wellbeing, social, recognition, and reward). Using hierarchical regression and moderation analyses, this study examined 1. Whether specific support types predict organizational commitment, 2. Whether specific support types can explain more variance in …

Projecting Echoes: Valeria Luiselli's Writing On Immigration, Jacob C. Cisneros
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The growing concerns of immigration has been a fraught topic in both U.S. society and the American political landscape. Certain political narratives are formed which fuel the debate for and against immigration. This coincides with how immigrants are treated and how legal processes change throughout each term of presidency within the United States. This has sparked outrage from both advocates and adversaries of immigrants coming into the United States. Papers, speeches, news articles, and more have been created from both sides of the argument concerning how to handle the immigration crisis along with the question of how immigrants and asylum …

The Use Of Sludge Content For Effective Recall Of Information, Rahaf G. Fares
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In an age where social media dominates daily consumption, the impact of engaging multi-modal media, specifically “sludge content,” on attention and memory has garnered significant interest. Sludge content, which generally combines unrelated visual gameplay with narrated audio and subtitles, has emerged as a popular form of online entertainment. This study explored whether this type of content enhances information recall by capturing users’ attention, a claim bolstered by theories of optimal arousal, non-pharmacological interventions such as fidget toys, and audiovisual redundancy. Using a within-subjects experimental design, the study investigated the effects of sludge content on effective recall through three conditions: sludge …

Impact Of Cysteine And Tyrosine Dipeptides On Cho Cell Performance In A Perfusion Mimic, Corrin L. Pruitt
Impact Of Cysteine And Tyrosine Dipeptides On Cho Cell Performance In A Perfusion Mimic, Corrin L. Pruitt
All Theses
Perfusion cell cultures typically achieve higher cell densities and generate higher volumetric productivities than fed-batch cultures due to continuous nutrient supply and spent media removal. Despite these advantages, perfusion cell cultures remain underutilized for licensed product manufacturing, primarily due to the lack of small-scale perfusion models for high-throughput process development and the complexities involved in media formulation capable of supporting high cell densities during long-term continuous operation. To avoid nutrient limitation at high cell densities, current perfusion processes rely on using higher perfusion rates, which results in significant media wastage and downstream product dilution. Therefore, there has been an effort …
An Exploration Of Elderly Representation & Stereotypes In Animation, Tyler Kidd
An Exploration Of Elderly Representation & Stereotypes In Animation, Tyler Kidd
All Theses
In the world of animated features, supporting cast members are often reduced down to simple character traits in order to give the audience a simple idea of their personality or role in the story, or to support the creation of a work that is easier to understand for people of all ages. However, this can often result in the application of negative tropes that do not reflect kindly on those being depicted. The elderly are a group that often get caught in these stereotypes, being depicted as wrinkly, clumsy, overweight villains. While you can still find many positive portrayals in …
The Effect Of Tort Liability For Prescribed Burns On Wildfire Severity: Evidence From Georgia’S 2000 Policy Reform, John Patrick Phillips
The Effect Of Tort Liability For Prescribed Burns On Wildfire Severity: Evidence From Georgia’S 2000 Policy Reform, John Patrick Phillips
All Theses
This paper aims to estimate the effect of Georgia’s shift in its prescribed fire tort liability standard from simple negligence to gross negligence on the area burned by wildfires on privately owned land. In response to wildfire damage, some states in the Southeast relaxed their liability standards, aiming to promote more prescribed burns and to better control future wildfires. Using the variation of these policy changes, I construct difference-in-difference models to estimate the treatment effect of Georgia’s policy change in July 2000, using counties in North and South Carolina as the control group. I stagger my regressions, adding covariates and …
The Diversity Of Our Weightlifting Uniforms: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Experiences Of Gender And Sexual Minorities In Gyms, Rachel M. Schott
The Diversity Of Our Weightlifting Uniforms: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Experiences Of Gender And Sexual Minorities In Gyms, Rachel M. Schott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gender and sexual minority (GSM) populations experience significant mental and physical health disparities compared to their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. A particularly understudied modality that may contribute to these disproportionate health outcomes is decreased engagement in physical activity (PA). Gyms are a primary source for PA, yet understanding GSM experiences in these spaces is relatively understudied. The purpose of the present study is to better understand the experiences of GSMs in gym spaces with an emphasis on barriers and facilitators to their engagement. We conducted semi-structured phone interviews among self-identified gender and sexual minorities across the U.S. Thematic analysis was used …
Isolation And Characterization Of Siderophore(S) From Pseudomonas Mosselii, Casey J. Stophel
Isolation And Characterization Of Siderophore(S) From Pseudomonas Mosselii, Casey J. Stophel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Iron is essential for growth of most microorganisms. It functions as an important cofactor in many important biological processes. However, iron found in soil is rendered insoluble and unavailable to microorganisms for use. To overcome this, many bacterial species produce siderophores, a small organic molecule that has high affinity for iron. Siderophores allow for bacterial cells to obtain otherwise insoluble iron. Pseudomonas mosselii, a Gram negative bacterium, was isolated from a local soil sample. P. mosselii was found to produce siderophore(s) under iron restricted environment, however, they have not been characterized. Therefore, it was of interest to isolate, purify and …
The Intersection Of Appalachian Identity And Gambling Behavior, Noah S. Anderson
The Intersection Of Appalachian Identity And Gambling Behavior, Noah S. Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relation between Appalachian identity and gambling behavior among students in central Appalachia (n = 395). One-way ANOVAs revealed no significant differences in engagement, F(2, 392) = 0.65, p = .523, or severity, F(2, 392) = 0.33, p = .718, across identification groups. Moderated regression showed that identity did not significantly moderate the engagement–severity relation (B = 0.073, p = .099), though engagement itself was a strong predictor of harm (B = 0.696, p < .001, R² = .521). Negative affect predicted both engagement (B = 0.074, p = .001) and severity (B = 0.069, p = .001), while identity remained non-significant. Logistic regression found that identity predicted gambling engagement (Exp(B) = 1.18, p = .034) only when controlling for severity. These findings relay the importance of empirical efforts in Appalachia and suggest that Appalachian identity may not be an independent risk factor in gambling behavior.

The internet is a widely used source of autism-related information, yet previous studies demonstrate that the quality, accuracy, and language used in such content remain inconsistent. This study conducted a content analysis of 356 autism-related internet sources obtained from top Google search results, examining their use of neurodiversity-affirming language, the quality of health-related information, and the inclusion of evidence-based interventions. Results showed that medical model language and person-first terminology were more common than neurodiversity-affirming language. Sources targeting caregivers were significantly more likely to use medical model language than those aimed at autistic adults. Only 12.92% of sources included quotes or …
Drivers And Consequences Of Changes In Nectar Microbiome Composition Across Spatial And Biological Scales, Daniel A. Barker
Drivers And Consequences Of Changes In Nectar Microbiome Composition Across Spatial And Biological Scales, Daniel A. Barker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbial communities inhabiting floral nectar, known as the nectar microbiome, are important mediators of plant-pollinator interactions. However, the ecological and environmental factors that shape the composition of these microbial communities remain poorly understood. While previous studies have examined the effects of a few microbial groups, typically independent of one another, on one plant or pollinator species, this dissertation takes a wide-scale approach to explore how abiotic conditions and biotic interaction’s structure microbial communities within floral nectar. Furthermore, I also quantify how variation in microbial richness and identity influences pollinator behavior and plant reproductive success.
This dissertation shows that microbial abundance …
