Articles
Americans work harder than their counterparts in many other advanced economies. While many predicted that technological progress would eventually make work obsolete, Americans continue to pull long hours. Although stories of worker burnout and “quiet quitting” suggest that this situation is not a good fit for everyone, any problems are largely invisible to the conceptual frameworks that dominate the analysis of law. These frameworks normally assume the goal of maximizing production and often treat the human preference for leisure as a problem to be solved. This Article analyzes the problem of overwork. In doing so, it surfaces legal and policy …

An Evidence-Based Report On Digital Inclusion In Cornwall: -, Katharine Willis
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This report establishes Cornwall’s first comprehensive baseline on digital inclusion, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative insights to reveal the scale, nature, and geography of digital exclusion across the county. Cornwall faces a dual challenge of ensuring equitable digital skills and addressing infrastructure and affordability barriers. While overall digital use is high, significant groups remain excluded, particularly older adults, low-income households, those without qualifications, and residents in rural or deprived areas. These challenges pose risks not only to individuals’ access to services and opportunities but also to Cornwall’s social and economic resilience.

Link Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Parenting Styles Of African American Fathers, Tatianna P. Johnson
Dissertations
African American fathers may be more susceptible than fathers of other races to having a negative parenting style due to their high levels of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). ACEs are traumatic experiences during childhood that can affect a person’s mental and physical health, income and adult parenting style. African American adults tend to have experienced multiple levels of ACEs at a higher rate than White and Asian adults (Maguire-Jack et al., 2021). ACEs can lead to adults experiencing higher levels of alcoholism, depression, health-related issues, mental illness, substance use, and academic problems. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to …
Feasibility Study On Using Blue Clay As A Supplementary Cementitious Material (Scm)., Clark Lemon
Feasibility Study On Using Blue Clay As A Supplementary Cementitious Material (Scm)., Clark Lemon
Master of Engineering Theses
An effective strategy for reducing CO2 emissions in the global cement industry is replacing a percentage of cement with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). As the availability of conventional SCMs such as fly ash and slag is decreasing, alternative SCMs such as calcined clays have been studied for their use as effective pozzolans. The present work investigates the feasibility of using a waste product from the quarrying industry known as blue clay as a viable SCM. It is composed of multiple clay minerals, predominantly muscovite. Raw and calcined at four temperatures (500, 650, 800, and 950°C), blue clay was analyzed …
Leaning Into The Messiness Of Authentic Engagement: Fostering Reciprocity In Foundation Strategy, Learning, And Evaluation, Sonia Taddy-Sandino, Jennifer Ho, Kim Ammann Howard, Clare Nolan
Leaning Into The Messiness Of Authentic Engagement: Fostering Reciprocity In Foundation Strategy, Learning, And Evaluation, Sonia Taddy-Sandino, Jennifer Ho, Kim Ammann Howard, Clare Nolan
The Foundation Review
Over the last several years, numerous foundations have endeavored to forge deeper relationships with grantees and challenge the status quo in strategy development and evaluation design. Encouraged by efforts such as the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project and the Equitable Evaluation Initiative, some funders are seeking to redefine how they engage grantees and field partners by navigating the nuances of power dynamics, mutual interests, and genuine collaboration. While there are encouraging signs of progress, there are also plenty of examples of foundation and nonprofit leaders getting stuck or reverting to the modus operandi. Competing agendas, the lack of sustained political will, and …
Perceived Obligations Of Older Partners In Living-Apart Together Relationships, Allison M. Martin
Perceived Obligations Of Older Partners In Living-Apart Together Relationships, Allison M. Martin
Human Development and Family Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Older and middle-aged adults are increasingly in Living-Apart-Together (LAT) relationships characterized by committed romantic relationships without marriage and cohabitation. Because of assumptions that older adults will receive family caregiving as they grow older and need caregiving, it is not clear how people are likely to perceive obligations to provide caregiving assistance. As adults move into old age and incidence rates of Alzheimer’s Disease or Related Dementia (ADRD) increase, questions about the availability of family members to provide needed assistance are complicated by LAT relationships. The purpose of this study was to examine perceived obligations to provide assistance to older adults …
Popular Culture As Conduit: Navigating Integrated Marketing Communication In An Age Of Hyperconsumerism, Abbey N. Mccann
Popular Culture As Conduit: Navigating Integrated Marketing Communication In An Age Of Hyperconsumerism, Abbey N. Mccann
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the discipline and practice of integrated marketing communication, acknowledging the limitations inherent in analyzing a field deeply embedded in the structures of hyperconsumption. This inquiry adopts a constructive hermeneutic approach, interpreting the dialectical tensions that define integrated marketing communication. These tensions include that between commercial imperatives and cultural critiques, which are further complicated by the influence of popular culture and shifting political climates. As popular culture increasingly intersects with sociopolitical discourse, brands are compelled to navigate these dynamics publicly. This evolving landscape reshapes consumer perceptions and brand strategies, reinforcing integrated marketing communication’s role as both a cultural …

Results reveal that areas like Benin’s Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou, and Akpo-Misserete are especially vulnerable due to high disaster frequency, substantial population exposure, and …
When Opportunity Knocks, Do Dark Personality Traits Aid In Students’ Rationalization Of Academic Misconduct?, Jacqueline R. Strowd
When Opportunity Knocks, Do Dark Personality Traits Aid In Students’ Rationalization Of Academic Misconduct?, Jacqueline R. Strowd
Dissertations
Concerns about academic misconduct are receiving increased attention within academia due to a proliferation of advanced technologies and reports of the high prevalence with which students engage in misconduct. Contextual factors (e.g., peer acceptance, opportunity) appear to be stronger predictors of students’ propensity for academic misconduct than individual factors (McCabe & Trevino, 1997). The Fraud Triangle Theory (i.e., pressure, opportunity, rationalization) has been adapted to this context and provides a useful theoretical model for considering contextual factors (Cressey, 1973; Wolfe & Hermanson, 2004). Research integrating this theory with the Dark Triad (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) suggests that these traits may …
A Brief Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention For Emotion Regulationand Aggression In Justice-Involved Adolescents: Preliminary Outcomes From A Non-Randomized Trial In Short-Term Juvenile Detention, Cassidy L. Tennity
Dissertations
Justice-involved youth are at risk for a variety of psychosocial difficulties, including anger, aggression, and emotion regulation challenges. Short-term juvenile detention settings offer a unique opportunity to provide psychological interventions to youth before they are returned to the community or sentenced to long-term placements. However, implementation barriers within these settings often hinder the delivery of evidence-based care. This study developed and tested a brief, two-session anger management intervention for adolescents detained in a short-term juvenile detention center in the Southeastern United States, drawing on evidence-based practices from prior work with justice-involved youth. The present study examined implementation outcomes (i.e., feasibility, …

This Autoethnographic dissertation uses autohistoria-teoria to critically analyze my lived curriculum as a Mexican-born raised in the borderland of the Rio Grande Valley. This research aims to understand the influence of my linguistic experiences on my cultural identity and teaching praxis within the same context. Drawing from Anzaldua’s (1987) concept of Borderlands as a contextual lens and Raciolinguistics as a theoretical framework, I examine and reflect on key linguistic experiences that have perpetuated colonizing linguistic practices rather than fostered linguistic diversity. Additionally, Culturally Linguistic Sustaining Pedagogy serves as a framework to critically analyze my teaching praxis in relation to my …
Barriers To Hispanic Post-Secondary Education In Science Fields, Luis Slayton
Barriers To Hispanic Post-Secondary Education In Science Fields, Luis Slayton
Theses and Dissertations
The study aimed to examine whether external barriers could be identified and are present throughout a Hispanic individual's educational life. The beliefs of the Hispanic community regarding education and the nature of acquiring an education could be relevant to the factors that impede the completion of high school. A survey approach was chosen as the methodology for the study due to the confidential nature of a questionnaire. Human nature tends to be more honest when not asked personal questions face-to-face. Additionally, there is potential to generalize attributes from a small sample to a larger population, allowing inferences about the identified …
Examining The Relationship Between Teaching Presence In The Community Of Inquiry Framework And Student Satisfaction In Online Graduate Educational Technology Courses, Vianna Madrid

A Diminished Alliance: The Effects Of French American Relations On The Leadership Of Washington, Adams, And Jefferson 1789-1809, Eric Christopher Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the relationship between the United States and France during the first three presidencies and how it influenced the leadership and decision-making of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson. Throughout the thesis, it is argued that the most critical developments in the United States during these presidencies were connected to diplomatic relations with the French along with each leaders own private, but often public, perceptions of the French. The two decades that these three leaders were in office witnessed significant transformation in U.S.-French relations, especially as the French Revolution spiraled into a full-scale European conflict that threatened American neutrality. In …
Multi-Theoretic Perspective Of Backer Decision-Making In Crowdfunding: Interplay Of Backer, Founder And Ai, Maliha Alam
Multi-Theoretic Perspective Of Backer Decision-Making In Crowdfunding: Interplay Of Backer, Founder And Ai, Maliha Alam
Theses and Dissertations
Crowdfunding has become a transformative mechanism for financing innovation, connecting creators directly with backers while bypassing traditional funding barriers. Despite its rapid global growth, only about 33.7% of campaigns succeed, largely due to ineffective communication of value propositions and lack of backer engagement. This dissertation investigates the complex interplay between project founders, backers, and emerging AI technologies to understand the factors influencing donation intention and to enhance crowdfunding success prediction.
Adopting the behavioral decision-making framework, I draw on multiple theoretical perspectives- signaling theory, the dual-process model of persuasion, and the cognitive-affective trust framework to examine founder- backer interactions. Using a …

Opa1-Mediated Mitochondrial Dynamics In Myogenic Differentiation Of C2c12 Myoblasts, Daniel Eloy Bazan
Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondria play a pivotal role in metabolic energy production, cellular signaling, and apoptosis. To carry out these key cellular roles, mitochondria dynamically balance their organization through opposing including fusion and fission processes. The balance between mitochondrial fusion and fission is regulated by key proteins such as OPA1 (optic atrophy 1) and OMA1 (overlapping activity with metalloprotease). More recently, mitochondria have been increasingly revealed to play key roles in cellular differentiation, where metabolic demands are reprogrammed. This study aims to elucidate the specific roles of OPA1 and OMA1 in the differentiation of C2C12 myoblast cells into myotubes.

Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This study aimed to understand experiences of nontraditional doctoral students pursuing their PhD in Communication. Although the term “nontraditional student” exists in the literature (Cox & Ebbers, 2010; Stone & O’Shea, 2019), there is little consensus about demographics of nontraditional doctoral students (NTDS), nor their experiences navigating these programs. Using qualitative, thematic analysis of survey responses (n = 52), this critical mixed-method study found three themes— age, experience, and education gap—as defining identity factors, barriers, and benefits. Participants described themselves as nontraditional due to different lived experiences from graduate peers, resulting in feelings of “Otherness” within their programs. These findings …
Climate Change Denial Messages As Post-Truth, David H. Kahl Jr., Ahmet Atay
Climate Change Denial Messages As Post-Truth, David H. Kahl Jr., Ahmet Atay
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Post-truth messages are hegemonic forms of communication intentionally designed to create false narratives that perpetuate power and marginalize others. These messages make differentiating fact from fiction difficult. Students are especially susceptible to believing and internalizing post-truth messages due to their high level of interaction with social media and the neoliberal period in which they have been raised. One type of post-truth message that has become especially prevalent is climate change denial messages that advance a neoliberal agenda. This article will apply tenets of critical communication pedagogy (CCP) as a means by which to recognize messages that deny climate change as …

Rethinking The Reach Of The Basic Course: Diversity And Interdisciplinarity As Catalysts For Reinvigorating The Foundations Of The Discipline, Narissra Maria Punyanunt-Carter, Sydney E. Brammer, Ryan J. Martinez
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Communication scholars have significantly advanced knowledge across various subjects and in basic course classrooms, yet face obstacles in conveying their importance to students and wider communities. Challenges like COVID-19 disruptions, inadequate teacher pipelines, and limited diversity in education hinder interdisciplinary communication, leading to insufficient funding and support. Neglecting diversity perpetuates systemic inequalities, limiting perspectives in syllabuses. Advocating for inclusivity and exploring practical implications of communication, such as organizational communication and societal engagement, enhances the field’s value. Prioritizing research with theoretical and practical implications, particularly in diversity, equity, and inclusion, empowers marginalized voices and promotes understanding. Embracing these efforts ensures communication …

Communicatively Enhancing Belonging By Meeting The Motivations Of First-Generation College Students In The Classroom, Miles C. Coleman, Brooke Hoffman, Angela Cirucci
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
First-generation college students’ (FGCS) experiences can be accompanied by lower senses of belonging when compared to continuing-generation college students (CGCS). This article explores some instructional communication best practices for supporting belongingness by meeting the motivations of FGCS with phrasings, framings, and designs of course content that might cultivate resonance with that which drives students. Specifically, strategies are discussed for meeting the motivations of FGCS as they might be shaped by imposter syndrome, negative affect, and orientations toward upward mobility.
Critical Communication Pedagogy At The End Of The World, Tyler S. Rife
Critical Communication Pedagogy At The End Of The World, Tyler S. Rife
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This essay draws upon my experiences teaching the undergraduate course, “Communication at the End of the World,” to argue for an approach to critical communication pedagogy (CCP) contextualized by and reflexively responsive to planetary-scale ecological crises. I outline how five commitments have come to guide my classroom’s explorations through our topic of “end-times” communication: (1) Anthropocentrism and speciesism participate in the maintenance of social hierarchy; (2) environmental justice and social justice are intimately entangled projects; (3) ecological crisis is (re)made concrete, embodied, proximal, and implicative; (4) critique of language involves critique of humanism and humanist historicization; and, (5) ecologically just …

Addressing Black “Student Outsiders” At Aanapisi/Hsis: Toward (Radical) Transgressive Teaching For Black College Students In Higher Education, Nicholas B. Lacy
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Black students attending AANAPISI/HSI universities have long been overlooked in communication and interdisciplinary research. In this essay, I draw on bell hooks’s (2014) radical transgressive teaching and Patricia Hill Collins’s “outsider within” framework to examine the experiences of Black students at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) such as AANAPISIs and HSIs. Using my autoethnographic and autobiographical experiences as a Black student who graduated from two AANAPISI/HSIs, alongside recent literature on Black student experiences in these contexts, I explore how communication instructors at MSIs can improve engagement with Black students by establishing racially affirming curricula, instructional practices, and instructor-student rapport. I argue that …
