Trajectories Of Recovery After Intravenous Propofol Versus Inhaled Volatile Anaesthesia (Thrive) Randomised Controlled Trial In The Usa: A Protocol, Bethany R Tellor Pennington, Laura Swisher, Mara L Bollini, Michael S Avidan, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: Millions of patients receive general anaesthesia every year with either propofol total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) or inhaled volatile anaesthesia (INVA). It is currently unknown which of these techniques is superior in relation to patient experience, safety and clinical outcomes. The primary aims of this trial are to determine (1) whether patients undergoing (a) major inpatient surgery, (b) minor inpatient surgery or (c) outpatient surgery have a superior quality of recovery after INVA or TIVA and (2) whether TIVA confers no more than a small (0.2%) increased risk of definite intraoperative awareness than INVA.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol was …

Themes identified within the literature include the COVID-19 pandemic, diversity, artificial intelligence, and social …

A Research Study Of Art-Based Pedagogy In Nursing Education, Lauren Holloway, Lila De Tantillo Sep 2025

A Research Study Of Art-Based Pedagogy In Nursing Education, Lauren Holloway, Lila De Tantillo

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Objective: Art-based pedagogy (ABP) is a non-prescriptive teaching strategy that facilitates understanding of multiple perspectives and connects students and educators in the learning process (Obara et al., 2022; Rieger et al., 2020; Rieger & Chernomas, 2013). One nursing school has incorporated this approach in its undergraduate nursing research course. This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the impact of incorporating ABP in the curriculum.

Background: This investigation was guided by David A. Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory (Kolb & Kolb, 2009; Rieger & Chernomas, 2013). This educational theory, which focuses on adult learners, emphasizes participation and reflection to promote student engagement and …

Effect Of Storytelling On Nursing Student Engagement And Patient Perceived Empathy, Catherine Quay Sep 2025

Effect Of Storytelling On Nursing Student Engagement And Patient Perceived Empathy, Catherine Quay

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Evidence has shown that engaging, immersive learning experiences that promote the understanding of another person are most effective at improving empathy in nursing students (Bas-Sarmiento et al., 2020; Cho & Kim, 2024; Levett-Jones et al., 2019). There is a lack of evidence, though, related to the clinical significance of these learning experiences on patient perception of empathy. This study examined the effect of storytelling through an immersive virtual reality (IVR) intervention on nursing student engagement and patient-perceived empathy.

Methods: Guided by Transportation Theory (Green & Brock, 2000), a quasi-experimental comparison group, posttest design was used. Participants included 60 second-degree, …

Behavioral Symptoms Of Dementia Management: Learning Experiences Of Healthcare And Allied Students, Modupe Adewuyi, Joy Li, Debbie Blay, Ifeoma Falilatu Ohaya

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia in the U.S., with expected cases rising from 6.7 million to about 13.8 million by 2060 [1]. Over 90% of individuals with Alzheimer's and related dementias (Pw-ADRD) experience behavioral symptoms such as agitation [1]. Studies have shown that these symptoms are positively correlated with functional and cognitive impairment, leading to earlier placement in nursing homes, hospitalizations, and increased caregiver burden [2-3]. Non-pharmacological interventions have been shown to be effective in preventing and managing those symptoms [4-5]. However, many healthcare and allied professionals lack the knowledge and skills to implement these …

Nurses' Understanding Of Lgbtq+ Populations: A Needs Assessment, Danielle Brochu Sep 2025

Nurses' Understanding Of Lgbtq+ Populations: A Needs Assessment, Danielle Brochu

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Recent literature illustrates the lack of nursing knowledge regarding health considerations specific to the LGBTQ+ population, both among nursing students and registered nurses (Medina-Martínez et al., 2021). A systematic review of the evidence by Sherman et al. (2023) concluded that formal education on this topic remains limited, as a comprehensive method to providing this education to nursing staff and other healthcare providers has yet to be identified. From a higher education standpoint, many pre-licensure BSN/RN students report a lack of formal education on caring for LGBTQ+ populations and have little exposure to this population in the clinical setting (Morris …

Bridging The Gap: Opportunities And Barriers In Diabetes Self-Management Education, Paul R. Boy, Sorina Long, Manpreet Sidhu, Barbara Roces, Dante Anthony Tolentino

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs are essential for navigating the complexity of diabetes management, yet engagement in these programs is poor.1,2 A gap remains in understanding AAs' DSMES engagement due to the exclusion of their perspectives and the tendency to treat them as a monolithic group,3 missing nuanced experiences. This lack of understanding prevents the creation of interventions to improve DSMES engagement among AAs. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the determinants of DSMES engagement among AAs with T2DM. We used an interpretive descriptive qualitative approach to explore how AAs engage with DSMES programs. We conducted …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

E-cigarette use among adolescents is a growing public health concern, driven by discreet designs, appealing flavors, and social influences. Despite high addiction rates, most teen users express a desire to quit, though evidence-based cessation tools remain limited. Behavioral interventions, including tech-based programs like This Is Quitting and smokeSCREEN, show promise. Pharmacotherapy, particularly varenicline, may support quitting, though its role in adolescents is still under investigation. Pediatricians must address this issue through empathetic, multifaceted approaches that combine education, behavioral support, and emerging treatments to curb early nicotine dependence and its long-term health consequences.

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Background

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a life-threatening condition requiring early and accurate diagnosis. The Wells and Geneva scores, along with D-dimer testing, are key tools in assessment. However, the standard D-dimer cut-off of 0.5 mg/mL, while highly sensitive, has low specificity, leading to excessive imaging. This study examines whether modifying the D-dimer threshold can improve diagnostic efficiency and reduce unnecessary testing.

Methodology

This retrospective study analyzed 878 patients who underwent computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) at Monmouth Medical Center from January 2022 to December 2023. Statistical analysis, including ROC curve assessment, was conducted using IBM SPSS, with significance set …

Of Photographs, Souvenirs, And Ticket Stubs: When Do Consumers Desire Mementos During An Experience?, Charlene Chu, Suzanne B. Shu

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Consumers often desire mementos of their experiential consumption, as reflected in common behaviors such as taking photos during a special event, purchasing souvenirs while on vacation, or keeping ticket stubs from a concert, but when do consumers desire mementos during an experience? This research examines the timing of the desire for mementos during an experience, and the conditions and motivations that prompt those memento timing decisions. We propose that the approaching end of an experience increases feelings of sadness and thus the desire for mementos at that time. However, for experiences that are easily repeatable, the approaching end of an …

"Elements Don’T Mix!": Unearthing Racial Scripts And A Rhetorical Economy Of Whiteness In Disney And Pixar's Elemental, Linsay M. Cramer, Gabriel A. Cruz

Communication, Media, and Culture

Using a narrative rhetorical approach, we map how Disney and Pixar’s 2023 film, Elemental, sustains a rhetorical economy of whiteness, as theorized by Asen and Kelly, which emphasizes the degree to which rhetorical constructions of racial difference are foundational to whiteness and economic systems. We identify and critique how Elemental discursively contributes to a system of exclusivity for those within the bounds of whiteness concerning economic mobility via racial scripts. Created and produced during Joe Biden’s United States (U.S.) presidential term (2021–2025), Elemental offers a metaphorical tale that engages the fractious, politically conservative anxieties concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) …
