Water system centralization and decentralization have variously been promoted as key to achieving household water security and Sustainable Development Goal 6.1. We argue that the lack of specificity with which scholars and practitioners use the terms centralization and decentralization limits our understanding of different water system configurations and their impacts. In this Primer, we provide a framework for thinking about levels of (de)centralization across three linked system dimensions: infrastructure, governance, and operations and maintenance. We encourage those analyzing water systems to characterize (de)centralization with respect to these multiple dimensions, as well as the system's broader political-economic and hydro-climatic contexts. Disaster Resilience And Normalization: Facing Facts, Naomi Zack Phd

Publications and Research

Disaster resilience requires acknowledgment and preparation to be normalized or integrated into normal life. But denial without preparation normalizes disaster by  leaving it out of normal life. In Disaster Resilience and Normalization: Facing Facts, Naomi Zack explores the normative and factual dimensions of a Climate Change Paradigm, through a global scope. Apart from the normative issues of who is responsible and who should pay for mitigation, the facts of Rising Average Earth Temperatures and more Intense and Frequent Disasters must still be faced.

But facing those facts has always been voluntary for powerful signatories to the 2015 Paris Climate …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Background Short lived acute illness in children is common, yet their parents often feel uncertain about recognising signs symptoms of acute illness and knowing when to seek medical intervention. This has led to seeking unscheduled or delayed support. Digital and mobile technologies are being used to support individuals with healthcare needs, known as digital health interventions. Parents have access to digital health interventions that provide information regarding children’s health, yet there is limited exploration of how these are used to support decision-making when caring for acutely ill children. This systematic review was undertaken to explore digital interventions to support parents …

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan

TOEFL Prediction is widely used in Indonesian higher education as a preparatory tool, yet students’ perceptions of the TOEFL test remain rarely explored. This qualitative case study involved ten English Education students (batch 2021) at UIN Datokarama Palu. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. Four indicators emerged: readiness and confidence, test-taking experience, motivation, and perceived fairness. Students valued TOEFL Prediction as a diagnostic tool, but faced challenges such as anxiety, technical issues, and limited vocabulary. TOEFL Prediction functions both as formative assessment and a motivational catalyst for learning.

Peninsula Medical School

The past twenty years, British academic psychiatry has made significant scientific advances in neurosciences, psychopharmacology, imaging and genetics with patients increasingly being involved as research partners. However, this progress has coincided with marked structural deterioration. Despite a 50% expansion in medical school places and rising mental health needs, full-time academic psychiatrists numbers fell from 330 in 2004 to 206 in 2023. This reduction has constrained research capacity, limited educational opportunities, and exacerbated regional disparities. The current academic landscape is precarious. While research-active services deliver demonstrably better patient outcomes and service outcomes (productivity/efficiency), the research workforce remains small and unevenly distributed. …

Effect Of A Small Control Rod On The Aerodynamic Forces And Wake Structure Of Side-By-Side Cylinders At Moderate Reynolds Number, M. M. Mosallem

Journal of Engineering Research

The unsteady wake interaction between two side-by-side circular cylinders often leads to significant vortex shedding and fluctuating aerodynamic forces. This numerical study investigates the effect of a small passive control rod with a rod-to-cylinder diameter ratio d/D = 0.07 on the wake dynamics and aerodynamic forces of two side-by-side circular cylinders. Two configurations are explored: one where the control rod is placed directly behind the cylinders (x/D = 0), and another where it is located downstream (x/D = 0.5). The two cylinders are arranged with a center-to-center spacing ratio T/D = 1.25. The simulations were …

Introduction To Special Issue On Unjust “Permission Structures” In/As Technical Communication, R. J. Lambert, Randall W. Monty, Kymberly O. Morquecho, Sarah Warren-Riley

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

The term “permission structure” has been popularized to describe a specific rhetorical strategy whereby communicators use the audience's existing beliefs and values to persuade them to change their original positions and/or take actions they otherwise would not. Even in its popular uses, permission structuring may be usefully understood as a form of technical communication by which audiences are strategically persuaded to accept or reject complex policy, scientific, and legal topics. However, scholars must resist popular jargon outpacing and superseding the use of technical concepts and critical discourse. Taken together, the seven articles in this special issue potentiate multiple critical, pedagogical, …

Political leaders always carefully choose what to say and how to state it, as all words count for influencing the public, explicitly or implicitly. Eventually, the ideas framed in a political statement are best understood contextually rather than merely textually. After Prabowo Subianto, the president of Indonesia, visited China in November 2024, both countries released a controversial joint statement. This article aims to analyse the political frames observable in the 2024 China-Indonesia joint statement with a discourse analysis method. The article found five political frames in the statement: 1) Indonesia agrees to China’s vision of global order; 2) China has …

Pertussis In Infancy: A Case Of Delayed Diagnosis, Ana Hernandez-Puga Sep 2025

Pertussis In Infancy: A Case Of Delayed Diagnosis, Ana Hernandez-Puga

All Publications

Bordetella pertussis is a gram-negative bacterium that primarily infects the respiratory tract. We report the case of a 13-month-old male patient who developed pertussis. At the initial clinic presentation, the diagnosis was not immediately considered, as the early manifestations closely mimicked those of a viral upper respiratory infection. As the illness progressed, the classic paroxysmal cough with inspiratory "whoop" became apparent, prompting the correct diagnosis. At that time, a nasopharyngeal swab was obtained, which tested positive for Bordetella pertussis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The patient was prescribed a five-day course of azithromycin, and close contacts were given prophylactic treatment. …
