Life Course And Cohort Patterns In Screen Time Among School-Aged Children In The United States, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Objective

To assess the independent effects of lifecycle (age), historical (period), and generational (cohort) differences that influence the trends in extreme (>3 hours/day) screen time (TV watching plus computer use) among school-aged children in the United States.

Study design

We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and hierarchical age–period–cohort statistical techniques to decompose, describe, and explain the population-level, secular patterns in extreme daily screen viewing time among 5 to 15-year-olds between 1999 and 2018.

Results

We found that 58% of school-aged children engaged in extreme daily screen time. The probability of extreme screen time is …

Better Together: Including Students In High School English Language Arts Course And Curriculum Design, Katelin E. Held

Doctorate in Education

This qualitative action research study examined how having students cocreate secondary English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum alongside teachers influenced student engagement and ownership of learning and staff attitudes toward cocreation. Conducted in a Midwestern U.S. public high school ELA department, the study involved four student and four educator participants, all of whom engaged in restorative-style focus groups with a larger number of students and teachers to collaboratively generate ideas for new course offerings. The study students and adults then participated in small-group semi structured interviews. Data were collected through audio-recorded group discussions, individual interviews, and researcher memos and were analyzed …

Whole-Blood Cellular Responses: A Promising Indicator Of Sars-Cov-2 Immunity Compared To Serology, Lucas M. Zhou, Elizabeth H. Duncan, Rupsa C. Boelig, Margaret Costanzo, Jeffrey R. Currier, Elke S. Bergmann-Leitner

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers

Background: Currently available immunological tests for SARS-CoV-2 assess only antibody responses. Despite the growing evidence that T cells play a crucial role in protection, especially against emerging viral variants, no routine test is available to determine T cell immunity. The prognostic value of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies for determining whether individuals are immune and protected against disease remains uncertain. This is in part due to the following: (a) specificity and limitations such as the sensitivity of antibody tests, and (b) the lack of correlation between antibody titers (quantity) and the antiviral function of antibodies (quality). Approximately a quarter of SARS-CoV-2-infected patients with …

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Just over half of Massachusetts residents approve of the job Governor Maura Healey has done and say that she deserves to be re-elected. Many Republican primary voters are largely undecided about the candidate they want to face Healey. In the race for U.S. Senate from Massachusetts, less than half of Bay Staters believe incumbent Ed Markey deserves to be re-elected. Most Massachusetts residents feel safe in Boston, support Boston's immigration policies, and oppose the increased deployment of federal personnel to enforce immigration policies in the city. Majorities support a limit on annual rent increases and Massachusetts officials coordinating with other …

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Former Senator John E. Sununu leads 2014 GOP nominee Scott Brown for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in 2026, both of whom trail Congressman Chris Pappas for the general election. Granite Staters are divided on whether Governor Kelly Ayotte deserves another term in office but very few have an opinion on two prospective Democratic candidates for governor. In New Hampshire's First Congressional District, most likely Republican voters are undecided on whom they will support, while Democratic primary voters show a preference for Stefany Shaheen, though more than half remain undecided. In the Second District, incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander …

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Just over half of adults in Connecticut approve of Governor Ned Lamont's job performance and are divided on whether he deserves to be re-elected. Less than half of state Democrats want potential Democratic candidates William Tong, Susan Bysiewicz, or Sean Scanlon to run for governor. On state issues, a majority oppose a proposal by Lamont to use state pension funds to purchase part of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun as part of a plan to keep the team in the state. Six in ten Connecticut residents support Connecticut working with other northeastern states on vaccine requirements.

Psychiatry Of Intellectual Disability In The Uk: Looking Back, Moving Forward, Rohit Shankar, Richard Laugharne Sep 2025

Psychiatry Of Intellectual Disability In The Uk: Looking Back, Moving Forward, Rohit Shankar, Richard Laugharne

Peninsula Medical School

In this century, psychiatry for people with intellectual disability in the United Kingdom has undergone profound shifts, shaped by deinstitutionalization, legislative reform, a focus on psychotropic reduction, an increasing recognition of the premature mortality, and a growing recognition of rights-based, person-centred approaches. Despite progress, entrenched challenges remain, including fragmented services, inconsistent outcome measures, inappropriate psychotropic prescribing, and health inequalities. The coming decades promise transformative opportunities through genomics, digital health, and personalized interventions, through integrated management of co-occurring conditions, but risk deepening inequities if inclusion is not intentional. This paper synthesizes past developments, including the impact of abuse scandals, legal reforms, …

Makara Journal of Science

Indonesia could potentially benefit significantly from economically important lobster species of the Panulirus genus, particularly the painted spiny lobster (P. versicolor) and the white-whiskered coral crayfish (P. femoristriga). Effective conservation decisions relating to these species require detailed knowledge of morphological variation and genetic relationships, especially in Palu Bay, Central Sulawesi, which is broadly considered pivotal for lobster conservation management. In this study, we conducted morphometric and genetic analyses to examine diversity and population structure of P. versicolor and P. femoristriga. From May to November 2021, a total of 72 specimens were collected in Kabonga Village, …

Psychiatric Associations With Barriers To Use Of Mental Health Services In Medical Students, E. Cadence Rarity, Nora Newcomb, Aishwarya Vuppala, Jade Brunicardi, Kim Van, Amelia C. Phillips

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Medical students experience stress, anxiety, and depression at rates greater than those of the general population. Medical students also underutilize mental health services. There exists a need for a comprehensive, multivariate analysis of the reasons medical students do not pursue mental health services, and the undesirable mental health outcomes that are associated with these barriers. This study associates psychiatric phenomena of stress, anxiety, and depression within the context of barriers to use of mental health services in medical students.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, medical students (N = 128) from the University of South Florida engaged with …

Accounting For Fetal Personhood: Confronting The Implications Of Fetal Personhood On Vital Statistics Law, Alix Rogers

San Diego Law Review

In February 2024, in LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine, the Alabama Supreme Court held that embryos created through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) were legal persons. The national conversation about this ruling focused on the implications for IVF treatment. The impact of fetal personhood on the realm of vital records law has, to date, gone unnoticed. Vital records laws in the United States mandate the registration and collection of data for legislatively determined vital events. Vital records law influenced by fetal personhood, as well as broader trends to criminalize pregnancy, has profound and troubling implications for individuals experiencing spontaneous abortion …

Advancements in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have enabled in-depth studies of biological specimens, offering new avenues to large-scale imaging experiments with subcellular resolution. Mitochondrial structure is of growing interest in cancer biology due to its crucial role in regulating the multi-faceted functions of mitochondria. We and others have established the crucial role of mitochondria in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive subtype of breast cancer with limited therapeutic options. Building upon our previous work demonstrating the regulatory role of mitochondrial structure dynamics in metabolic adaptation and survival of chemotherapy-refractory TNBC cells, we sought to extend those findings to a large-scale …

Structural Variation Of The Right Coronary Ostium And Its Implications To Cardiac Medicine, Jessica L. Hensley, Joseph X. Anders, Timothy Robinson, William Srinivasan, Donald G. Matz, Ethan L. Snow Sep 2025

Structural Variation Of The Right Coronary Ostium And Its Implications To Cardiac Medicine, Jessica L. Hensley, Joseph X. Anders, Timothy Robinson, William Srinivasan, Donald G. Matz, Ethan L. Snow

The Journal of Integrative Physiology

Introduction: The high oxygen demand of the heart’s myocardium is met via perfusion through the coronary arterial system. During embryological development, the right (RCA) and left (LMCA) coronary arteries fuse onto the aortic root, creating right (RCO) and left (LCO) ostial openings respectively to join the closed circulatory system. Regardless of their widely variable branching patterns, the ability of the RCA and LMCA to perfuse the myocardium initially relies on the functional patency of the coronary ostia. The objective of this study is to examine a unique extra-ostial tissue structure found overlying an RCO and provide a literature-based discussion of …

Children’S Rights At The United States-Mexico Border: Is The United States Of America Breaking International Laws?, Avery Anderson

Immigration and Human Rights Law Review

The treatment of migrant children at the United States-Mexico border has become a contentious issue worldwide. International human rights frameworks set certain standards for the treatment of migrant children, and there are growing allegations that the United States has violated international legal obligations due to its inadequate detention conditions. This article argues that while the United States is not explicitly violating international treaties due to specific reservations, its border policies are in direct contradiction with global norms for the humane treatment of children. Through a review of the legal obligations under customary international law and international treaties, this article highlights …

When Love Is Not Enough: The Muñoz Decision And The Erosion Of Family Unity In U.S. Immigration Law, Katerina Fernandez

Immigration and Human Rights Law Review

The Supreme Court’s decision in Department of State v. Muñoz marks a significant shift in U.S. immigration law, reinforcing the doctrine of consular non-reviewability and weakening long-standing protections for family unity. Historically, marriage and family have been recognized as fundamental rights; yet, Muñoz limits judicial oversight of visa denials, allowing for indefinite separations between U.S. citizens and their non-citizen spouses. This piece examines the ruling’s legal and human rights implications, its parallels to family separation policies, and its potential to justify future erosion of parental rights in immigration enforcement. It also examines possible legal avenues to challenge arbitrary family separations, …

Allowing The Tree To Be Cut Down: Quo Warranto Writs In Florida, John W. Wilcox Sep 2025

Allowing The Tree To Be Cut Down: Quo Warranto Writs In Florida, John W. Wilcox

Florida Law Review

There is no sense in declaring that an action is outside someone's scope of power after the action has already occurred. In much the same way, it does not matter whether someone may chop down a tree after the tree is down. Yet, the Florida Supreme Court's interpretation of the quo warranto writ in League of Women Voters of Florida v. Scott allows the figurative tree to be cut down and then later declares it should have been protected.
