‘The Truth Was, Most Biodiversity Was Redundant’: Caring About Mass Extinction In Ned Beauman’S Venomous Lumpsucker, David Sergeant
‘The Truth Was, Most Biodiversity Was Redundant’: Caring About Mass Extinction In Ned Beauman’S Venomous Lumpsucker, David Sergeant
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This essay reads Ned Beauman’s Venomous Lumpsucker as exploring the gap that exists between caring about mass species extinction and taking meaningful action to prevent it. The novel, at first, undermines the conventional reasons for caring; however, one of its protagonists is then revealed as having become willing to die for the issue. Equally, the reason for this change proves strangely hard to locate. This essay argues that the real reason for caring about species extinction in Venomous Lumpsucker is connected to a transcendence of the self that aligns the novel with both science fiction and spiritual traditions; however, this …

Apocalypticism And Prognostication In Early ShiʿI Literature, Mohammad Amin Mansouri
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities
This article studies the origins of Jafr, an apocalyptic, eschatological and occult book attributed to the first Shiʿi imam, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (d. 661). While it remains unclear whether Jafr was ever physically composed, it became associated with lettrism (ʿilm al-ḥurūf) in medieval Sunni and Shiʿi literature. Jafr gradually evolved into a crucial component of Islamic occult traditions and influenced various cosmological theories as well as the letter-magic practices of prominent Sunni and Shiʿi occultists. Despite its historical significance, confusion regarding Jafr’s roots, authorship and content in Shiʿi sources from the third to fifth centuries AH …

Adolescent Sexting: An Exploration Of Teacher’S Perspectives Of The Relationship And Sex Education (Rse) Based Curriculum, Grace Byrne, Leigh-Ann Sweeney, Sinead Tobin
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Sexting has emerged as a normative aspect of adolescent sexual exploration in Ireland and internationally. While much attention has been given to the risks and negative aspects of sexting, contemporary literature highlights the potential positives associated with adolescent sexting. Within this precarious context, little is known about the attention sexting commands within formal education of adolescents in Ireland. To better understand teachers’ perspectives of the positionality of sexting within Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum in Ireland, the researchers employed a qualitative interpretivist approach in interviewing eight RSE teachers actively delivering sex education in Irish secondary schools. Teacher’s narratives were …

Generation Z learners often prefer fast-paced, engaging, pragmatic learning environments and material. As digital natives, they are accustomed to the role of technology in education.1 One study found that podcasts “enhance knowledge and skills, in particular for international students and those with special learning needs.”2 To keep up with today’s learners, including those with diverse learning styles, faculty from a traditional baccalaureate nursing program sought to utilize a different instructional modality through podcasting. In order to ensure that all students placed in various clinical settings were exposed to crucial conversations in pediatric nursing, three podcast episodes were developed …

Trauma Therapy For Orcs: A Psychotherapeutic Consideration Of Orcs In Tolkien's Legendarium, Karen L. Pollock Ms
Journal of Tolkien Research
The complex, violent behavior of the Orcs can be understood through the lens of modern trauma psychology, specifically Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) and the mechanism of Intergenerational Trauma Transmission.
CPTSD is a diagnosis often applied to individuals who have experienced prolonged, repeated, and inescapable trauma, particularly within an abusive or authoritarian environment. The foundational myth of the Orcs—that they were captured, enslaved, tortured, and physically and mentally mutated by Morgoth—perfectly aligns with a foundational, systemic trauma event.
The resulting Orcish behaviors align with the core symptom clusters of CPTSD including; emotional dysregulation,dissociation/distorted self-perception, disturbed relationships, and a lack of …

“It’S All Fun And Games Until Someone Loses An Eye (-Test): On The Presence And Consequences Of An Argument Scheme That Re-Works Our Notions Of Evidence And Support”, Matthew P. Brigham
Studies in Debate and Oratory
This essay explores an argument scheme commonly employed in sport communication, the “Eye Test,” which claims that a good faith watching of two teams or athletes, for instance, provides its own evidence as to which is superior. A distinction is drawn between a weak version of the argument, the earned eye test, and the strong version, the universal eye test. Focusing on the latter, which does not rely on expertise but claims that any individual should be able to see the proof of the argument, the essay explores a range of everyday and public sphere arguments that operate …

Intergenerational Differences In Environmental Awareness Within Family Businesses: A Conceptual Model For Understanding Strategic Impact, Omnia Khaled
Audio & Video by Faculty: Webinars, interviews, documentaries, etc...
Purpose: Sustainability is gaining increasing importance, and family businesses—with their unique characteristics such as long-term vision and the influence of family values— play a crucial role in this context. However, generational dynamics within business families (founder, current leader, rising generation) can significantly shape the firm’s approach to environmental issues, given the differences in perspectives, values, and experiences. Existing literature, though expanding, has not sufficiently explored how these internal generational differences interact to form the collective environmental awareness of business families and how this is reflected in the firm’s strategic direction and actual environmental performance. There is a lack of conceptual …

Rethinking Succession: The Impact Of Non-Family Management On Non-Financial Performance Of Family Businesses, Okey Nwuke, Olayode Agboola, Adebowale Adebayo
Audio & Video by Faculty: Webinars, interviews, documentaries, etc...
Introduction
This empirical research study investigates the impact of non-family management succession on non-financial performance of family businesses in Nigeria. Family businesses often experience failure during generational transitions, largely due to the absence of structured succession planning and the fear of appointing non-family members to management roles when no suitable internal successor exists. Many family business owners exhibit reluctance to transfer leadership to non-family executives, primarily due to uncertainties regarding the potential impact on organisational performance. Organisational performance in family businesses is a multidimensional construct that incorporates both financial and non-financial dimensions. Financial performance indicators typically include profitability, liquidity (and …

Ai-Driven Autonomous Content Generation For Trending Topics, Steven Dropsho, Dhruv Bakshi
Defensive Publications Series
Generative artificial intelligence models are capable of generating content in different modalities such as text, image, audio, video, and combinations. While user-driven content generation, where a user enters a prompt about a topic of interest and receives AI-generated content in response, is popular, this requires users to identify topics and seek content. This disclosure describes techniques for autonomously generating high-engagement content in various modalities. A continuous loop of input (identifying topics of interest), output (content generation based on the topics of interest), and metrics (engagement with the generated content) is used to generate new content that provides users engaging online …
Privacy And The Right To (Dis)Connect, Hugh Collins
Privacy And The Right To (Dis)Connect, Hugh Collins
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The rise of remote work and modern communications technology has blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, leaving many workers perpetually on call with little time for rest or personal activities. In response, some jurisdictions have adopted a “right to disconnect,” often framed as a ban on work communications during certain hours. However, such proposals are flawed: they are unnecessary, as workers already possess the legal right to ignore work communications outside contractual hours, and impractical, as many feel pressured to remain connected due to workplace norms and career concerns. This article argues for a reconceptualisation of the “right …

Lost In Translation: Is Data Protection Labour Law Protection?, Michele Molè
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
This article critically examines how the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) defines and applies the legal categories of “data subject” and “data controller” within employment relationships. Under the GDPR, employers who collect and process personal data are classified as data controllers, while employees are designated as data subjects. However, this article argues that such a “translation” of data protection categories, rights, and obligations into the regulation of workplace dynamics requires closer examination. The focus is on evaluating whether the GDPR’s rights and obligations for data subjects and data controllers accurately capture the agency and interests of employee and employer …

Liability, Property, And Inalienability Rules In Employee Data Regulation, Matthew T. Bodie
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
Legal protections for workers’ data have usually taken the form of privacy protections designed to deter data processing that is excessive or invasive. Such protections generally fall into the category of liability rules, under which rights can be infringed as long as compensation is provided for the violation. As Guido Calabresi and A. Douglas Melamed have described in “Property Rules, Liability Rules, and Inalienability: One View of the Cathedral,” liability rules are contrasted with either property rules that prevent the involuntary transfer of rights or inalienability rules that prohibit rights transfers altogether. This article explores how property rules and inalienability …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers
BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal women face an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) due to estrogen withdrawal, which exacerbates traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, and hypertension. Coronary Artery Calcium Score (CACS), a well-established marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, has emerged as a key predictor of adverse cardiovascular events. Despite the recognized association between menopause and heightened CVD risk, there remains a paucity of literature exploring the specific role of menopause in influencing CACS and its implications for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
AIM: To examine the interplay between menopause, CACS, and cardiovascular health by synthesizing existing literature.
METHODS: A comprehensive …

Educational Program For Primary Care On Reducing Antibiotic Overuse For Upper Respiratory Infections, Adebusola Onwuemene
Biennial Convention (CONV)
With the advent of antibiotics in 1928, the death rate declined (Fleming, 1980; Hoyert et al., 1999). However, antibiotics’ effectiveness led to the notion that antibiotics could be used for various illnesses. Thus, the overuse of antibiotics leaped, causing antibiotic resistance, rising healthcare costs, and increased mortality rates (CDC, 2024). Many research studies identified factors influencing antibiotic overuse for upper respiratory infections (URIs) in primary care, such as primary care providers’ ignorance, and patients’ expectations (Carlsson et al. , 2023; Gidengil et al., 2016). This study aimed to provide an educational program, via the Canva media tool, on reducing the …
