Designing Hierarchical Exploratory Experiences For Ethnic Costumes: A Cultural Gene-Based Perspective, Xiaofan Ma, Lirong Yan, Weiji Zhao, Weiping Zeng, Huiyue Wu
IASDR Conference Series
Ethnic clothing is a vital carrier of cultural identity, yet its digital preservation often results in static displays that fail to convey deep cultural meaning or foster user engagement. Existing practices lack a systematic design framework for translating the hierarchical cultural connotations of these garments into dynamic, personalized, and identity-promoting digital experiences. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel Three-Layer Cultural Gene Framework that systematically decodes ethnic costumes from their surface-level visual symbols, through their mid-level socio-cultural contexts, to their inner-layer spiritual core. Based on this framework, we designed and implemented an interactive digital platform featuring two key …

Exploring Design Strategies For Generative Ai To Support Narrative Identity Construction, Heejae Bae, Daehyun Kwak, Youn-Kyung Lim
IASDR Conference Series
Narrative identity—the way individuals construct meaning by organizing life experiences into personal stories—plays a vital role in self-understanding. Generative AI systems, such as chatbots and journaling apps, are now being used to support this kind of identity work. While prior work has explored how generative AI can support either intra personal reflection or interpersonal interaction, few systems are intentionally designed to bridge the two. In this study, we explore how generative AI can be designed to support narrative identity construction by addressing both dimensions. Through semi-structured interviews with five autobiography ghostwriters and two counseling professionals, we identify three expert strategies. …

Building on craft’s material, narrative, and embodied dimensions—well established in design research—this study explores how textile-based making can foster playful engagement with personal data. As data practices shift beyond performance-oriented dashboards toward more expressive and situated forms, textile craft offers an alternative mode for materializing data through hands-on interaction. We conducted three workshops with participant groups of varying expertise in craft and data—crochet hobbyists, data-science students, and community organisers—with each workshop employing textile techniques tailored to their backgrounds. Our findings show that participants creatively negotiated material constraints and affordances to engage with their data in ways aligned with the playful …
