Toil And Quietus, Dylan Mitchell
Toil And Quietus, Dylan Mitchell
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
The United States of America is haunted by its past. Be it the institution of slavery, the lack of gender equality, or the violent annexation of Native land, its ghosts are plentiful and undeniable. Still, though, questions of whether to venerate our nation’s history or condemn it pervade society. Now, then, is the time for the gothic.
For all of its existence, the gothic has served to shed light on the past, often casting on its dusty visage an ambivalence that weighs its good with its bad. Nowhere is this land more fertile than with American history, which is simultaneously …
Holistics And Foundations Of Culture-Space Economics Holistics And Foundations Of Culture-Space Economics Volume I Holistics And Foundations Of Culture-Space Economics: Volume I, Victor L. Tonn
Faculty and Staff - Ebooks
Situated in the light of holistics and its various formulations of systrix, this book advances a series of frontier lectures on culture–space economics, ultimately grounded in the mutual economy. It develops a coherent framework of wealth creation and accumulation coupled with humane distribution, through which the economic mechanisms of twenty-first-century earth–space transformations are explored. Beyond this theoretical inquiry, the book engages in an in-depth analysis of hegemonic competition between Type I and Type II economies (in abstraction, China and the United States), with the broader aim of discerning conditions conducive to enduring universal peace.

A Framework For Reliable Domain Ai: Knowledge-Grounded Data And Logic-Graph Reasoning, Yangxiao Bai
A Framework For Reliable Domain Ai: Knowledge-Grounded Data And Logic-Graph Reasoning, Yangxiao Bai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Large language models (LLMs) perform well on general tasks, yet their deployment in specialized, high-stakes domains such as public health remains unreliable. Models hallucinate facts, combine multi-step evidence incorrectly, and retrieve context that corrupts downstream reasoning. Three root causes underlie these failures: training data that underrepresents rare but critical domain themes, reasoning that is opaque and unverifiable, and evidence use that cannot be re-checked when the evidence changes. This dissertation addresses all three. First, we introduce HDBSCAN_SSA, a coarse-to-fine topic-modeling pipeline that couples density-based clustering with a novel Semantic Seed Aggregation algorithm. Using samples drawn from a larger corpus of …
Impacts Of Management Practices And Soil Properties On Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In Eastern South Dakota, Laura Galvan Nuevo
Impacts Of Management Practices And Soil Properties On Free-Living Nitrogen Fixation In Eastern South Dakota, Laura Galvan Nuevo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Free-living nitrogen (N) fixation (FLNF) may represent a sustainable pathway to supplement crop N demand in agroecosystems, yet edaphic and management factors regulating this process under field conditions remain poorly understood in the Northern Great Plains. Using 15N2 direct method to quantify potential FLNF (pFLNF) and baseline FLNF (bFLNF), this thesis investigates how crop rotations (2-, 3-, and 4-year systems), tillage management (conventional vs. no-till), cover cropping, and soil properties affect the potential of free-living diazotrophs to supply N via FLNF in a long-term no-till corn-based system in Southeastern South Dakota. A two-year field study evaluated pFLNF across four growing …

School counselors are First-Responders as the role and responsibilities continue to increase and the needs of the school community changes. Diversity has notably increased within the last century in school settings. While, the impact of the COVID-19 crisis has shed light on the gaping and persistent inequities faced by marginalized school communities, the heightened racial crisis of 2020 serves as an additional impact to the students within vulnerable communities. School counselors are expected to support students in navigating the impact that these crises bring. The demand for school closure forced students to shift to online platforms. The intersection of the …

Framing Of Obesity In Magazines, Chitrangda Malik
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
The aim of this study is to determine how the top four magazines in America portray the issue of obesity in terms of responsibility and in relation to mental health. Additionally, it is to determine the kind of framing used to present the issue of obesity. The data of this study is limited to Costco Connection, Better Homes & Gardens, AARP, and People magazine. Data has been divided into two timelines, one from January 2020-January 2026 and the other from January 2022-January 2026. Results indicate that magazine articles primarily attribute the cause of and solution to obesity as behavioral and …

Structural And Magnetic Characterization Of A Magnetite Nanoparticle-Based Aggregation Assay And Its Application To In Vitro Cytokine Monitoring, Gabrielle Rose Moss
Structural And Magnetic Characterization Of A Magnetite Nanoparticle-Based Aggregation Assay And Its Application To In Vitro Cytokine Monitoring, Gabrielle Rose Moss
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS) based aggregation assays rely on target induced changes in functionalized magnetic nanoparticle (fMNP) hydrodynamic diameter and/or changes in fMNP aggregation level to enable target detection. fMNP target binding can be modeled via Brownian and Néel relaxation. We are engineering an MPS-based aggregation assay to sense tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-⍺ in a 3D melanoma tissue culture to aid in the development of immunotherapies for cancer treatment. TNF-⍺ is an inflammatory cytokine, whose production can be linked to cell death.
The first part of this thesis investigates the effects of ligand density, off-target proteins, and salts on fMNP …
The Influence, Dependency, And Targeting Of Fatty Acid Uptake In Er+ Breast Cancer, Abigail E. Goen
The Influence, Dependency, And Targeting Of Fatty Acid Uptake In Er+ Breast Cancer, Abigail E. Goen
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Estrogen Receptor-positive/ Human Epidermal Growth Factor 2-negative, breast cancer (ER+/HER2- BC) is the most prevalent subtype of BC, impacting millions of individuals. Although early screening and treatment with endocrine therapy has greatly enhanced survival, this subtype sustains a steady increase of risk for recurrent disease for decades after diagnosis, indicating the persistence of residual cancer cells that are capable of maintaining dormancy for >20 years prior to metastatic outgrowth. Dormant cells reprogram metabolic pathways which can be profoundly influenced by the tumor microenvironment in promoting quiescence or proliferation. Fatty acid oxidation dependency has been noted as a hallmark of drug …

Religious Freedom, Jesuit Mission, And Dei, William M. Treanor, Amelia J. Uelmen
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The ability of Jesuit educational institutions to pursue a central part of their mission – that of fostering diverse, equitable and inclusive educational environments – is under attack. This essay outlines several dimensions of their religiously-grounded mission and the reasons to strongly protect from government interference the rights of Jesuit universities to implement programs and practices that align with DEI values. First, for Jesuit universities, these programs and practices are rooted in a much deeper culture of the more than 2,000-year old Catholic intellectual tradition and the now 500-year old tradition of Jesuit spirituality. Second, drawing on the classic work …
Accountability For Lawyers And Lawyer-Bashers: Reflections On Wendel's Canceling Lawyers, David Luban
Accountability For Lawyers And Lawyer-Bashers: Reflections On Wendel's Canceling Lawyers, David Luban
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article is part of a symposium on W. Bradley Wendel’s Canceling Lawyers: Case Studies of Accountability, Toleration, and Regret. I agree with Wendel’s two fundamental claims: first, and contrary to the reigning conception, lawyers can be held accountable for choosing to represent a particular client (assuming they have a choice), and therefore that they cannot use their professional role as a “magic shield or force field” (Wendel’s term) to deflect all criticism. Second, however, there is also an ethics of blaming, and critics who blame lawyers irresponsibly can themselves be blamed. One of Wendel’s examples is lawyers who …

Required Learning, Voluntary Service: A Critical Look At Mandatory Cle And Pro Bono Options, Rima Sirota
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This chapter critically examines the intersection of mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) and pro bono service in the United States, focusing on the growing practice of awarding MCLE credits for pro bono work. It argues that MCLE, widely justified as promoting lawyer competence, rests on a striking lack of empirical support and is structured in ways that undermine effective professional learning. A pro bono option for earning MCLE credit, introduced as an incentive to expand access to justice, has similarly failed to demonstrate measurable impacts on pro bono participation. Nonetheless, the pro bono option holds untapped potential because, if properly …

Fixed Dune Grassland Mapping, Ronica Reyes, Madison Mayenschein, Jared Cruz
Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones
Our study applies Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and field-based data collection to map and assess a degraded fixed dune grassland parcel in Humboldt County, CA. Our project supports restoration planning led by Friends of the Dunes by identifying site features, habitat composition, and disturbance patterns at the site. Using GPS surveys, aerial imagery, and ArcGIS Pro, we mapped infrastructure, cement footprints, debris piles, vegetation types, and habitat boundaries. We mapped infrastructure such as concrete foundations and debris, which contribute to ongoing ecological degradation and the presence of invasive species. In addition, our spatial analysis highlights variability in disturbance. From this …

Cold Comfort: Japan’S “Comfort Women” Litigation Under Transnational Law, Timothy Webster
Faculty Scholarship
Transnational human rights litigation has emerged as a powerful tool to remediate state and corporate abuses. Courts, however, rarely evince the same enthusiasm for these lawsuits as practitioners, scholars, and activists. For the past thirty-five years, “comfort women,” or survivors of wartime sexual exploitation, have used transnational litigation to seek redress from the Japanese government. Yet they have lost nearly all their cases. This Article uses ten “comfort women” lawsuits from Japan to test the limits of transnational human rights litigation. While judges rarely found for the comfort women, their verdicts nonetheless advanced the redress issue by showing the illegality …
Peeking Inside The Black Box: Discovery In Fair Housing Act Cases Arising From Ai Decision Making, Jessica Mahon Scoles
Peeking Inside The Black Box: Discovery In Fair Housing Act Cases Arising From Ai Decision Making, Jessica Mahon Scoles
Faculty Scholarship
In today’s real estate market, more housing decisions are being automated. If artificial intelligence renders a biased decision, will the person impacted have any legal recourse? Commentators have expressed concern that the proprietary nature of AI will allow defendants in discrimination lawsuits to avoid discovery, effectively shielding their decision making from judicial scrutiny. This article examines whether AI and algorithm-related information is the discovery black box that some fear it to be.
Addressing the issue in the context of Fair Housing Act (FHA) litigation, the article argues that concerns about access to AI and algorithm-related discovery are overstated. In real …
Preparing The Professional: Selected Uses Of Digital Audio Workstations In Applied Tuba Studios, Reid Timothy Cox
Preparing The Professional: Selected Uses Of Digital Audio Workstations In Applied Tuba Studios, Reid Timothy Cox
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The modern music job market calls for musicians to cultivate and engage with a diverse range of area interests and skillsets. Collegiate music programs provide opportunities to prepare students professionally, yet programs have traditionally fallen behind changes in the job market. One way that music faculty within higher education can help prepare students to succeed after graduation is by teaching students to engage with digital audio workstations, also known as DAWs. Using DAWs, students can gain new practice tools, as well as learn skills that are helpful in a number of musical careers. This is of particular use to the …

More Than A Man: An Ethnomusicological Survey Of The Folklore Of John Henry And Resource Guide For “More Than A Man” By Shanyse Strickland, Clayton R. Heath
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
“John Henry” exists as an enduring folk legend in the United States of America, representing the confluence of the Reconstruction Era, the economic utility of Appalachia and the Westward expansion of industry which left it behind. Though based on historical events, Henry’s fictional representation has diverted and evolved in music and other media from its inception in the oral tradition to the modern age. Through this progression, shared symbols have circulated, gathering embedded meanings and associating the folklore with specific communities. Henry’s representational identity has been signaled with the creation and distribution of each version of his story, both complicating …
Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Confirming Behaviors Across Instructional Modalities, April Nicole Wright
Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Confirming Behaviors Across Instructional Modalities, April Nicole Wright
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examined how undergraduate students and instructors evaluate lowinference teacher confirmation behaviors across instructional modalities and identified additional behaviors perceived as confirming in contemporary instructional contexts. Participants included 274 undergraduate students and 104 higher-education instructors who completed a survey measuring four clusters of confirming behaviors (willingness to engage, recognition, acknowledgment, and endorsement) using a 7-point Likert-type scale. Open-ended questions invited participants to describe confirming behaviors not represented in existing measures. Results indicated that both students and instructors rated most behaviors above the midpoint of the scale, with instructional responsiveness and course organization receiving the highest ratings. Instructors rated all …

Congolese Journalists: Professional Identity And Legitimacy, Hannah L. Heiskell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This paper examines how Congolese journalists construct their professional identity
and legitimacy while working under conditions of conflict and state pressure, and how
international media outlets discursively represent them through Western journalistic norms.
Addressing previous research and centering local perspectives, this study uses critical
discourse analysis to compare language, framing, and narratives across Congolese and
international media texts, and the works in which they produce. Attention is given to how
agency, professionalism, and constraint are represented within each discourse. The analysis
focuses on metajournalistic discourse, or journalism talking about journalism, to examine
how professional norms and boundaries are articulated and …
Three Essays On Urban Transportation, Daniel Amorim Souza Centuriao
Three Essays On Urban Transportation, Daniel Amorim Souza Centuriao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Urban environments are shaped by dynamic interactions between infrastructure development, policy interventions, and episodic demand shocks, all of which can generate unintended externalities in the form of motor vehicle collisions, injuries, and fatalities. This dissertation investigates the determinants of traffic safety in dense urban settings, with a particular focus on how different sources of urban activity affect collision risk and severity. Using New York City as a case study and leveraging high-resolution spatial and temporal data, I examine three distinct but interconnected mechanisms: construction activity, traffic safety policies, and large-scale events.
The first chapter analyzes the impact of urban development, …
Evaluation Of Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis) Thermal Tolerance And Projected Climate Change Effects On Headwater Brook Trout Population Persistence, Cory Bauerlien
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Climate change has been identified as one of the greatest threats to global biota in recorded human history. Consequences are expected to be more pronounced in ectotherms because most of their physiology is controlled by external temperature conditions. Predicting how ectotherms may respond to increasing global temperatures necessitates information about thermal limits of thermal sensitive species and how increasing temperatures may affect individual and population-level fitness. Therefore, the objectives of this research were aimed at gaining a better understanding of the mechanisms that underpin thermal tolerance limits of fish and how those mechanisms may affect fitness and population persistence under …
Jazz And Classical Form In Selected Movements Of Nikolai Kapustin's Eight Concert Etudes Opus 40, Hsiaofen Lin
Jazz And Classical Form In Selected Movements Of Nikolai Kapustin's Eight Concert Etudes Opus 40, Hsiaofen Lin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research focuses on three etudes from Kapustin’s Eight Concert Etudes, Op. 40, offering analyses for “Prelude,” “Reverie,” and “Toccatina,” The analysis explores several interrelated issues: the extent to which jazz-derived formal structures may be discerned in Kapustin’s piano works beyond traditional classical models; the ways in which jazz structural frameworks interact with forms such as sonata, ternary, and through-composed designs; and the degree to which jazz formal procedures influence sectional organization, phrase structure, and large-scale form. A further concern is whether Kapustin’s use of jazz form serves merely as a stylistic reference or operates as a structurally determinative …

Sharenting And Child Rights In The Age Of Platform Capitalism, Christiana Essie Sagay, Unyime Abasi Odong
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
The boundaries between private life, work, and visibility have become increasingly blurred in the digital age. Nowhere is this more evident than in the phenomenon of sharenting, a portmanteau of “sharing” and “parenting,” where parents routinely post images, videos, and personal narratives of their children on social media platforms. While often framed as acts of familial affection or digital memory-keeping, sharenting implicates commercial content creation and positions children as de facto participants in global digital labor markets. In this context, childhood increasingly unfolds within algorithmic and economic contexts that transcend domestic boundaries and challenge conventional legal norms, protections, and understandings …

The Unspeakable Unspoken: Terrorist Imagery, Symbolic Expression And The Shifting Boundaries Of Free Speech, Ayşe Yağmur Tunçak
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
A simple fruit like a watermelon can convey many meanings: solidarity for some, terrorism sympathies for others. Among other things, increasing restrictions on speech drive individuals to the use of symbols for political expression, which may lead to legal controversies at the international level due to the untended complexity of symbolic speech in legal discussions. Unlike verbal communication, the meaning and communicative content of symbols are often indirect and open to interpretation. Thus, international human rights standards should rely on context-sensitive evaluations to prevent arbitrary limitations. Although the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), due to its subsidiary role, assumes …

State Complicity And The Threshold Of Knowledge: From Fragmentary Evidence To Evidentiary Saturation, Christina Bradic
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
The International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) 2007 judgment in Bosnia v. Serbia turned on evidentiary gaps. Although the ICJ recognized that genocide had been committed at Srebrenica, it declined to hold Serbia complicit, reasoning that the record did not prove awareness of genocidal purpose. Intelligence was piecemeal, contemporaneous witnesses were scarce, and the ICJ refused to infer knowledge absent direct proof.
Two decades later, the evidentiary environment looks radically different. In October 2024, ninety-nine American healthcare professionals who had volunteered in Gaza sent an open letter to the White House reporting that children with gunshot wounds to the head or …
