Beyond Broadcasting: Irish Radio And The Convergent Mediascape Of The 21st Century, Daithí Mcmahon Jan 2026

Beyond Broadcasting: Irish Radio And The Convergent Mediascape Of The 21st Century, Daithí Mcmahon

Irish Communication Review

As we reflect on one hundred years of broadcast radio in Ireland, we are reminded of the resilience required to remain a prominent fixture in what has become a highly congested digital mediascape. The Irish radio industry’s survival and continued success has been made possible, paradoxically, by remaining true to its origins as a linear, aural medium - while at the same time adapting to become a modern, digitally convergent one. Over the last twenty-five years, Irish radio has continued to serve as a live, spontaneous and trustworthy medium, providing an ever-present voice in Irish people’s lives at home and …

“A Questionable Culture That Has Dominated Rté For Too Long”: Early Funding Structures And The Nature Of Irish Public Service Media, Roddy Flynn Jan 2026

“A Questionable Culture That Has Dominated Rté For Too Long”: Early Funding Structures And The Nature Of Irish Public Service Media, Roddy Flynn

Irish Communication Review

RTÉ is unusually reliant on advertising revenue in comparison with other European public service media. This article suggests that understanding why this is the case requires a look at the longer history of RTE’s finances, back to the era when the broadcasting service was directly run as an element of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs and thus, indirectly, the Irish state. This status notwithstanding, a sequence of government decisions in the 1930s created a situation whereby the public service medium became reliant on advertising income for its survival, a dependency relationship which not only persisted but became even more …

Discovering New Music: Curators In Irish Radio, Ciarán Ryan Jan 2026

Discovering New Music: Curators In Irish Radio, Ciarán Ryan

Irish Communication Review

From the arrival of pirate radio stations to the establishment of RTÉ 2FM and the later introduction of commercial radio, Irish audiences have had access to various forms of popular music radio for over half a century. Non-chart or ‘alternative’ music programming is a part of the Irish radio landscape that has been under-researched until now. Primarily scheduled late at night, these programmes have had hosts who have fostered intimate connections with smaller, niche audiences through their musical knowledge and personally selected track listings. Looking at industry perspectives from various strands of broadcasting in Ireland, this research examines the value …

Who You Gonna Call? Talk Radio As Therapy And As A Marker Of Social Change In Ireland, Finola Doyle O'Neill Jan 2026

Who You Gonna Call? Talk Radio As Therapy And As A Marker Of Social Change In Ireland, Finola Doyle O'Neill

Irish Communication Review

In the Irish context, the radio talk show has long constituted a distinctive cultural institution, evolving from early programmes such as Dear Frankie, The Gay Byrne Show, The Ryan Line, and Liveline into a significant public forum for the expression of personal narratives, collective opinion, and emotional resonance (O’Sullivan, 2005). Over time, this genre has undergone a notable transformation—from functioning as a secular analogue to the Catholic confessional to becoming an increasingly therapeutic outlet for listeners. This evolution is emblematic of wider sociocultural shifts in Ireland, particularly the waning influence of institutional religion (Inglis, 2000) and the disintegration of traditional …

The Unscripting Of Broadcasting In Postwar Ireland, Eileen Morgan-Zayachek Jan 2026

The Unscripting Of Broadcasting In Postwar Ireland, Eileen Morgan-Zayachek

Irish Communication Review

This article builds on existing histories of Irish broadcasting by examining the contexts and implementation of postwar reforms initiated by Fianna Fáil politician, Erskine Hamilton Childers. The lifting of script submission requirements and promotion of open debate extended Childers’ efforts to modernize Ireland’s infrastructure and promote civic engagement. Childers viewed Irish radio as a platform for cultivating critical thinking, public debate, and understanding of state institutions—assets he believed Irish citizens needed to compete in the global economy. The article reviews the repressive practices of the early broadcasting service that sought to avoid all controversial content. It also traces a throughline …

Crystal Sets And Listening-In: Radio In Ireland Before 2rn, Stephanie Rains Jan 2026

Crystal Sets And Listening-In: Radio In Ireland Before 2rn, Stephanie Rains

Irish Communication Review

When 2RN began broadcasting from its studios on Henry Street in Dublin on 1 January 1926, it became the first radio station in the Free State. However, it was very far from being the start of radio on the island of Ireland, as there was already a community of amateur operators and engineers conducting technical experiments. This article explores the radio landscape in Ireland which 2RN joined and transformed. The early enthusiasts often not very concerned with programming or with most of radio’s possibilities as a form of entertainment, but did have a very international perspective on the medium’s possibilities. …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The rise of online health information has increased access to cancer resources but also amplified misinformation, creating trust gaps that threaten prevention, treatment, and health equity. This study examined how trust in cancer information sources, online information-seeking, and healthcare perceptions relate among U.S. adults. Guided by the health information seeking behavior, the socioecological model, and the structural influence model of health communication, data from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey (N = 6,197) were analyzed with logistic regression, mediation, and moderation modeling, controlling for demographics. Trust in government agencies predicted greater cancer information seeking (odds ratio [OR] = 1.94, …

National Survey Of Physical Therapists’ Participation As Health Educators In Physical Activity Promotion Among Older Adults, Casey Nicole Mokres Jan 2026

National Survey Of Physical Therapists’ Participation As Health Educators In Physical Activity Promotion Among Older Adults, Casey Nicole Mokres

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Physical inactivity among older adults remains a major national and global public health concern linked to preventable morbidity, mortality, and rising healthcare costs. Physical therapists are uniquely positioned to promote physical activity (PA) through health education, yet their engagement in this role is not well defined. This quantitative cross-sectional study examined associations between clinical practice factors—years of experience, board certification status, and practice setting—and three domains of the theoretical domains framework (knowledge, skills, and behavioral regulation) related to PA promotion among older adults. The framework guided identification of behavioral and contextual factors influencing therapists’ delivery of PA promotion interventions. Data …

Minority Leaders’ Impact On Corporate Diversity And Organizational Change, Nana Kwasi Amponsah Jan 2026

Minority Leaders’ Impact On Corporate Diversity And Organizational Change, Nana Kwasi Amponsah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Workplace diversity continues to face criticism due to the limited representation of minority groups, with little progress made in the corporate sector. Despite corporations’ efforts to increase diversity and inclusion in the workplace, a notable lack of minority leadership persists in upper management roles. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed-method study was to explore the factors that affect the selection of minority leaders and how corporate executives utilize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives to foster significant organizational change, even in the face of ongoing underrepresentation in upper management. Social dominance theory, anti-egalitarianism, and social construction theory grounded this …

Sex-Specific Evolutionary Programs Shape Recombination Rate Evolution In House Mice., Lydia K Wooldridge, Micah Pietraho, Peyton Disiena, Sam Littman, Benjamin Clauss, Beth L Dumont

Faculty Research 2026

Recombination rates vary across species, populations, and sexes. House mice (Mus musculus) present a particularly extreme example. Prior studies have established large differences in global recombination rates between M. musculus subspecies and inbred strains, with males exhibiting more extensive variation than females. The observation of sex-limited variation has prompted the hypothesis that male and female recombination rates may evolve by distinct evolutionary mechanisms in M. musculus. Here, we formally evaluate this hypothesis in a phylogenetic framework. We combine cytogenetic estimates of genomic crossover counts with published data to compile a large dataset of sex-specific crossover rate estimates totaling >6,000 single …

Ai Companions And Adolescent Social Relationships: Benefits, Risks, And Bidirectional Influences, Xiaoran Sun, Yunqi Wang, Brandon Mcdaniel

Health Services and Informatics Research

AI companions (AI-Cs)—rapidly emerging conversational agents built on large language models that can provide personalized humanlike companionship—create unprecedented opportunities for adolescents to form emotional bonds with nonhuman entities during a critical period for social development. In this article, we discuss the interplay between adolescents' use of AI-Cs and their social relationships based on theoretical hypotheses driving research on digital communication and adolescent well-being. We explore the benefits and risks of AI-Cs to social development based on the stimulation hypothesis and the displacement hypothesis: AI-Cs can provide safe spaces for identity exploration and emotional expression, potentially building skills that transfer to …

Cmsi Note 18: Flooding The Zone: The Use Of Civilian Landing Craft (Lcts) In Pla Amphibious Operations, Thomas Shugart, J. Michael Dahm Jan 2026

Cmsi Note 18: Flooding The Zone: The Use Of Civilian Landing Craft (Lcts) In Pla Amphibious Operations, Thomas Shugart, J. Michael Dahm

CMSI Notes

In July and August 2025, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) employed a unique type of civilian deck cargo ship known as a Landing Craft Tank (LCT) to transport military vehicles directly to shore as part of an amphibious landing exercise. While civilian deck cargo ships of this type have been observed in previous PLA over-the-shore logistics exercises, they had only been used to transport vehicles and equipment from port-to-port—simulating the transport of forces into a captured port—not directly to an unimproved beachhead. If the PLA develops the ability to coordinate and employ significant numbers of civilian LCTs to transport forces …

A Policy Reversal As Structural Break: A Lesson From China’S Land Lease Financing For Infrastructure, Yilin Hou, Lin Li, Lei Shao Jan 2026

A Policy Reversal As Structural Break: A Lesson From China’S Land Lease Financing For Infrastructure, Yilin Hou, Lin Li, Lei Shao

Center for Policy Research

Land-based revenues as a fiscal instrument to finance infrastructure tie public investment to real estate markets, where demand fluctuations cause fiscal consequences. This paper takes policy reversals as structural breaks and examines their impacts on infrastructure investment. We dissect China’s 2016 policy reversal that disallowed developers to finance land purchase with debt, causing sharp declines in local government land revenues, slashing their fiscal base for infrastructure investment. Using prefecture-level panel data and continuous difference-in-differences identification, we estimate the reversal reduced land-lease revenues by 55%. Two-stage least squares estimates suggest a 10% land-revenue decline translates into 6.6% investment reduction. Decomposing the …

Collaborating With ‘Blue Food’ System Stakeholders To Achieve Optimal Nutritional Health And Wellbeing In Less Affluent Communities, Clare Pettinger, Louise Hunt, Carol Wagstaff

School of Health Professions

UK food system transformation is urgently needed, but to date, minimal research has investigated ‘blue foods’ probably because they are ethically nuanced. There exists a paradox whereby materially deprived communities should be eating more fish to meet nutritional requirements, yet there is a global ‘red flag’ around global overfishing. New collaborative and creative solutions are, therefore, needed to tackle such food system inequities. By working together, all voices can be equally heard when decisions are being made to improve the system. Similarly, innovation and disruption of established supply chains will enable better access to healthy, affordable and tasty food that …

Continuous Ambient Microphone Calibration Via Opportunistic Broadband Auditory Icons, Rajeev Nongpiur, Chris Breithaupt Jan 2026

Continuous Ambient Microphone Calibration Via Opportunistic Broadband Auditory Icons, Rajeev Nongpiur, Chris Breithaupt

Defensive Publications Series

Performance drift in microphone arrays is often caused by environmental factors such as dust, moisture, and grime accumulating over time. This spectral mismatch degrades the performance of spatial audio algorithms that rely on precise array calibration. To address this limitation, a continuous calibration method is disclosed wherein broadband earcons are opportunistically played through device speakers. Audio responses are recorded by on-device microphones during defined user scenarios. A background model is generated to filter out environmental noise and room reverberation from these recordings. Subsequently, the filtered in-field measurement is compared against a reference factory template to estimate spectral deviation. A calibration …

Ai-Driven Application Intent For Seamless End-To-End Guaranteed Quality Of Service Packet Forwarding, Jaganbabu Rajamanickam, Madhan Sankaranarayanan, Paul Jensen, Sumant Mali, Krishna Deevi

Defensive Publications Series

A next-generation approach to network Quality of Service (QoS) is proposed herein that enables direct, in-band communication of application intent using an innovative extension header, such as an Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) extension header. Using the proposed innovation, applications can embed concise, high-level QoS requirement strings or "intents" (e.g., 'ultra-low latency', 'AI/ML Training', etc.) into packet headers, allowing ingress edge devices to interpret these intents using a local policy database. Advanced matching engines, potentially leveraging machine learning, can enable flexible and semantically rich interpretation of these requirements/intents, surpassing traditional rigid classifications.

Animals respond to changes in their environment and internal states via neuromodulation. Neuropeptides modulate neural circuits with flexibility because 1 gene can produce either multiple copies of the same neuropeptide or different neuropeptides. However, with this architectural complexity, the function of discrete and active neuropeptides is muddled. Here, we design a genetic tool that facilitates functional analysis of individual peptides. We engineered Escherichia coli bacteria to express active peptides, fed loss-of-function Caenorhabditis elegans, and rescued the activity of genes with varying lengths and functions: pdf-1, flp-3, ins-6, and ins-22. Some peptides were functionally redundant, while others exhibit unique and previously …

ESR1 mutations are the leading cause of endocrine therapy resistance and progression in ER-positive metastatic breast cancer. ESR1 mutations are detected in ~50% of metastatic breast cancer patients, and identification of effective targeted therapeutics are critically needed. Here, we identified enrichment of dysregulated replication stress and DNA damage responses in multiple ESR1 mutant models. Targeting the replication stress response utilizing checkpoint inhibition in combination with PARP inhibition synergistically suppressed growth, induced cell cycle arrest, and attenuated DNA replication. PARP inhibition blocked metastatic dissemination in vivo and reduced both PARP1 and ER-regulated protein expression. PARP trapping by olaparib treatment with or …
