The Urobiomes Of Adult Women With Various Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Status Differ: A Re-Analysis, Cara Joyce, Thomas Halverson, Caroline Gonzalez, Linda Brubaker, Alan J. Wolfe
Biostatistics Collaborative Core: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The discovery of the urinary microbiome (urobiome) has created opportunities for urinary health researchers who study a wide variety of human health conditions. This manuscript describes an analysis of catheterized urine samples obtained from 1,004 urobiome study participants with the goal of identifying the most abundant and/or prevalent (common) taxa in five clinically relevant cohorts: unaffected adult women (n=346, 34.6%), urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) (n=255, 25.5%), stress urinary incontinence (SUI) (n=50, 5.0%), urinary tract infection (UTI) (n=304, 30.4%), and interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) (n=49, 4.9%). Urine was collected via transurethral catheter and assessed for microbes with the Expanded Quantitative …

Effects Of An External Oscillation Device On Phonation Threshold Pressure (Ptp), Brittany Tiffany Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of external laryngeal vibration on voice function. The current study was based on a recent pilot study using silicone vocal folds that demonstrated a decrease in phonation threshold pressure (PTP; cmH2O) when an external oscillation was applied to the vocal folds. Using a within-subjects experimental design, a custom external oscillatory device was fitted to the posterior portion of 12 excised pig larynges using a traditional benchtop phonation setup. For each larynx, phonation was elicited during 30 repeated trials, including 15 with and 15 without external oscillation. During the phonation …

The dispersive sweep of fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been used to probe the ionized baryon content of the intergalactic medium1, which is assumed to dominate the total extragalactic dispersion. Although the host-galaxy contributions to the dispersion measure appear to be small for most FRBs2, in at least one case there is evidence for an extreme magneto-ionic local environment3,4 and a compact persistent radio source5. Here we report the detection and localization of the repeating FRB 20190520B, which is co-located with a compact, persistent radio source and associated with a dwarf host galaxy of high specific-star-formation rate at a redshift …

Improving On Atmospheric Turbulence Profiles Derived From Dual Beacon Hartmann Turbulence Sensor Measurements, Alexander S. Boeckenstedt, Jack E. Mccrae, Santasri Bose-Pillai, Benjamin Wilson
Faculty Publications
Atmospheric turbulence is an inevitable source of wavefront distortion in all fields of long range laser propagation and sensing. However, the distorting effects of turbulence can be corrected using wavefront sensors contained in adaptive optics systems. Such systems also provide deeper insight into surface layer turbulence, which is not well understood. A unique method of profile generation by a dual source Hartmann Turbulence Sensor (HTS) technique is introduced here. Measurements of optical turbulence along a horizontal path were taken to create C2n profiles. Two helium-neon laser beams were directed over an inhomogeneous horizontal path and captured by the HTS. The …

Secondary metabolites from two endophytic fungi (EG10-21E-2-HDAC & TAP14-34A-2-HDAC), collected …
Measuring End-To-End Media Latency In Videoconferencing Using Audio Watermarking, Ole Gauteplass, Ragnvald Barth
Measuring End-To-End Media Latency In Videoconferencing Using Audio Watermarking, Ole Gauteplass, Ragnvald Barth
Defensive Publications Series
An important factor for ensuring high quality collaboration meetings is low end-to-end audio and video latency between the meeting participants. Traditional network tools measure network latency only, and not the additional latency that is introduced by media processing. Measuring the true media latency between participants in a collaboration meeting is thus important. Preferably, such measurements are made during every call using signals that are undetectable by a user. Techniques are presented herein that support the encoding of an inaudible watermark message into the audio streams of a video conference. By measuring the roundtrip time of such a message, the measurement …
Industrial Strategies: Rhetoric At The Intersection Of Arts And Entrepreneurship, Conner Tomlinson
Industrial Strategies: Rhetoric At The Intersection Of Arts And Entrepreneurship, Conner Tomlinson
Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education
By emphasizing the rhetorical processes integral to arts entrepreneurship, this study hopes to open up a rhetorical vocabulary that will simultaneously expand arts entrepreneurship discourse and bridge the gap between its constituent terms. Likewise, the abstract processes of rhetoric offer an insightful perspective on the specific processes of entrepreneurship in the arts. The first wave of Industrial Music in the late 1970s and early ‘80s is taken as a case study in order to articulate how a group of artist-entrepreneurs used information, attention and sound itself as rhetorical tactics to engage in an emancipatory form of arts entrepreneurship. In step …

A Theory Of Why Arts Entrepreneurship Matters, Jason C. White
A Theory Of Why Arts Entrepreneurship Matters, Jason C. White
Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education
Although consensus on a definition of Arts Entrepreneurship (AE) is helpful, formal theories are needed to help AE researchers and educators explain what the general AE process is and why it matters. Asdiscussed in this article, such theories can help us understand the relationship between art innovation, artmarket creation and art value exchange in Artworlds. Such theories can also help AE educators in particular clarify distinctions and similarities between the systematic practice of AE and businessentrepreneurship, challenge past and present assumptions about AE and may encourage AE educators to pivot towards new pedagogical directions.

Creative Freedom: Arts Entrepreneurship As A Mindset, Stephen Rueff
Creative Freedom: Arts Entrepreneurship As A Mindset, Stephen Rueff
Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education
Prospective art and design students have little doubt that entering the creative sector is their purpose and calling. However, one of the main concerns for students and their fami-lies when deciding whether to enroll in a specialized college is the ability to earn a living wage upon graduation. Colleges and universities, particularly art and design schools, respond to this concern by increasing access to arts entrepreneurship programs. Arts entrepreneurship offerings provide practical guidance students can apply in business development and more broadly while seeking financial self-sufficiency working in the creative sector. This essay offers insights into how faculty teaching arts …

Within the scope of a Wide Area Network (WAN), a large geographical communication network in which a collection of networking devices communicate data to each other, an example being the spanning communication network, known as the Internet, around continents. Within WANs exists a collection of Routers that transfer network packets to other devices. An issue pertinent to WANs is their immeasurable size and density, as we are not sure of the amount, or the scope, of all the devices that exists within the network. By tracing the routes and transits of data that traverses within the WAN, we can identify …
Patient Portal Use And Patient Education Materials Access Among Mississippi Adult Residents, Anna K. Swann
Patient Portal Use And Patient Education Materials Access Among Mississippi Adult Residents, Anna K. Swann
Dissertations
Patient education plays a vital role in improving the health outcomes of patients with chronic diseases and helps prevent illness in otherwise healthy individuals. Patient portals allow patients to access their EHRs, communicate with their healthcare providers, and access patient education materials. Despite the potential for patient portals and education materials to improve health outcomes, many barriers prevent patients from utilizing them. Uneducated patients are more likely to participate in risky health behaviors, which leads to poor health outcomes. Poor health outcomes lead to higher medical costs. Mississippi has a high rate of chronic diseases. Suppose the barriers to patient …

Community engagement is well established as a key to improving public health. Prior food environment research has largely studied community engagement as an intervention component, leaving much unknown about how food retailers may already engage in this work. The purpose of this study was to explore the community engagement activities employed by neighborhood food retailers located in lower-income communities with explicit health missions to understand the ways stores involve and work with their communities. A multiple case study methodology was utilized among seven retailers in urban U.S. settings, which collected multiple sources of data at each retailer, including in-depth interviews, …
Game Of Thrones: Liberty & Eminent Domain, Mitchell F. Crusto
Game Of Thrones: Liberty & Eminent Domain, Mitchell F. Crusto
University of Miami Law Review
This Article analyzes the relationship between private property and the government’s power to expropriate it. When it comes to protecting private property from governmental expropriation, our Constitution is conflicted. On the one hand, the right to private property is a foundational principle that defines the American spirit, our history, and our culture. Yet, on the other hand, the Founders adopted the government’s superior authority over private property, that is, eminent domain, for public purpose and with just compensation, via the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment. This “private property conundrum” requires us to explore the limits of eminent domain relative …
Expert Testimony By Public University Faculty: Exposing Doctrinal Deficiencies Of Academic Freedom As A Legal Right And Proposing A Solution Within The Public-Employee Speech Doctrine, Clay Calvert
University of Miami Law Review
When the University of Florida (“UF”) prohibited three professors in 2021 from serving as expert witnesses in a lawsuit filed against the State of Florida, the decision sparked a national debate about academic freedom and free speech at public universities. The professors also sued UF in federal court in Austin v. University of Florida Board of Trustees alleging a violation of their First Amendment rights. This Article asserts that the constitutional doctrine of academic freedom is sadly deficient for resolving such lawsuits. The Article explains, instead, that the public-employee speech doctrine provides the appropriate framework for analyzing cases filed by …
Understanding Microstructure Heterogeneity In Li-Ion Battery Electrodes Through Localized Measurement Of Ionic Transport, Baichuan Liu
Understanding Microstructure Heterogeneity In Li-Ion Battery Electrodes Through Localized Measurement Of Ionic Transport, Baichuan Liu
Theses and Dissertations
Electrode microstructure influences ionic transport and electronic transport and is a key factor that affects lithium-ion battery performance. Non-uniform microstructure or heterogeneity in battery electrodes has long been observed and leads to non-uniform transport properties. This work provides a better understanding of in-plane heterogeneity at millimeter length scale and through-plane heterogeneity at micrometer length scale, through a combination of experiment and modeling. The first part of this work develops the aperture probe technique, which is an experimental method and associated model to locally estimate ionic transport, represented by MacMullin number, in the electrode. By generating contour maps of MacMullin number, …
