How Much Further Can Southern Resilience Go?, Abbie-Noel Pittman Jun 2022

How Much Further Can Southern Resilience Go?, Abbie-Noel Pittman

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Climate change affects everyone. However, the Southeastern United States is at a higher risk of negative effects. The South is especially vulnerable to climate change not because mitigation will drain resources, but because those resources were never available in the first place. This paper describes the geographic disadvantages of the Southeastern United States and explains how prior institutional inequality will exacerbate those disadvantages for marginalized groups and communities. The South depends on agriculture and tourism economically, both of which are heavily climate dependent. For southerners who already lack resources, the destruction of two main job industries would be detrimental. This …

Closing The Gap: Documenting Black Women's Involvement In The Integration Of The University Of Mississippi, Brittany Ellis Jun 2022

Closing The Gap: Documenting Black Women's Involvement In The Integration Of The University Of Mississippi, Brittany Ellis

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper explores the lack of documentation around the first Black woman to racially integrate the University of Mississippi—Verna Ann Bailey—and the rest of her cohort of the first Black female graduating class of 1968. In doing so, I recount how Black women were consistently and directly involved in political activism and student protests at UM in the years from 1965-1970. The narrative of integration at UM is oftentimes viewed as a singular event that started and ended in 1963—not a fluid and long-lasting effort made possible by the sacrifices and determination of a long list of pioneers.

Gull Plumages Are, And Are Not, What They Appear To Human Vision, Muir D. Eaton, Pilar Benites, Luke Campillo, Robert E. Wilson, Sarah A. Sonsthagen Jun 2022

Gull Plumages Are, And Are Not, What They Appear To Human Vision, Muir D. Eaton, Pilar Benites, Luke Campillo, Robert E. Wilson, Sarah A. Sonsthagen

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Clear correlations between human and bird visual assessments of color have been documented, and are often assumed, despite fundamental differences in human and avian visual physiology and morphology. Analyses of plumage colors with avian perceptual models have shown widespread hidden inter-sexual and inter-specific color variation among passerines perceived as monochromatic to humans, highlighting the uncertainty of human vision to predict potentially relevant variation in color. Herein, we use reflectance data from 13 Larus gull species as an exemplar data set to study concordance between human vision and avian visual modeling of feather colors near, or below, the human threshold for …

Pm Me The Truth? The Conditional Effectiveness Of Fact-Checks Across Social Media Sites, Austin Horng-En Wang Jun 2022

Pm Me The Truth? The Conditional Effectiveness Of Fact-Checks Across Social Media Sites, Austin Horng-En Wang

Political Science Faculty Research

People use multiple social media daily. Some platforms feature public interactions like Facebook, others emphasize private communications such as Line. Although misinformation is rampant on all platforms, literature on fact-checks (FC) focuses primarily on public ones. This article provides an integrated psychological model and argues that FC is less effective on private platforms. People expect to encounter “unwelcome” FCs (incongruent with their beliefs) on public platforms, but selectively approach the “welcome” FC on private platforms. An experiment (n = 601) and a national survey (n = 1060) were implemented to test these hypotheses in the 2020 Taiwan Presidential …

The President’S Remedy–What The Hydroxychloroquine Story Teaches Us About The Need To Limit Off-Lable Prescribing Powers, Jennifer Bard Jun 2022

The President’S Remedy–What The Hydroxychloroquine Story Teaches Us About The Need To Limit Off-Lable Prescribing Powers, Jennifer Bard

Catholic University Law Review

When the history of the first year of the United States Government’s response to the COVID-19 virus is written, there is likely to be mention of the still unexplained vehemence with which then president Donald J. Trump made use of his access to social media to promote seldom used anti-malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, for both the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 despite the active growing opposition of most of the world’s scientists, including his own government scientists. While the use of drugs developed and approved by the FDA for different purposes to combat new diseases, off-label prescribing, is legal in the …

Paving A New (Hua)Wei: A Comparative Analysis Of International Approaches To Securing Information And Communication Technology Supply Chains, Jordan Villegas Jun 2022

Paving A New (Hua)Wei: A Comparative Analysis Of International Approaches To Securing Information And Communication Technology Supply Chains, Jordan Villegas

Catholic University Law Review

Recent amendments to Chinese Intelligence Laws codify affirmative obligations upon domestic companies and citizens alike, namely, that they must assist and support the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in its intelligence gathering efforts. Coupling these laws with the international prevalence of Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications company comprising two-thirds of 5G equipment outside China, CCP compromised 5G equipment is an unassailable reality. This article explores five intelligence allied nations and how each has respectively addressed the risk posed by Huawei. It argues each nation’s policies are deducible to three primary approaches, categorically including: (1) promulgation of law explicitly excluding Huawei 5G equipment; …

Game masters (GMs) are creative practitioners who plan and orchestrate tabletop role-playing games. Through an interview study, we investigate how eight expert game masters adapt everyday technologies and materials as creativity support tools (CSTs) for improvisational and collaborative play. We integrate theories of improvisational and distributed creativity with the human-artifact model, which provides an activity-theoretical vocabulary for analyzing the mediating relationships between specialist practitioners and their tools. We show how GMs prepare and deploy readymade artifacts: analog and digital CSTs that flexibly mediate recurring creative tasks in their practice, such as improvising narrative elements, facilitating smooth play, and creating aesthetic …

Zein And Lignin-Graft-Plga Nanoparticles As Agrochemical Delivery Systems To Soybean Plants, Eban A. Hanna Jun 2022

Zein And Lignin-Graft-Plga Nanoparticles As Agrochemical Delivery Systems To Soybean Plants, Eban A. Hanna

LSU Master's Theses

The majority of applied agrochemicals are lost to the environment due to their poor adhesion to plant tissues, resulting in multiple applications and subsequent environmental toxicity. This thesis focuses on reducing these consequences by entrapping agrochemicals in polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs). In the first section, zein nanoparticles (ZNPs) with entrapped methoxyfenozide (MFZ) (209.0 ± 5.6 nm, -42.1 ± 2.1 mV) were synthesized and used to facilitate the translocation of MFZ to the leaves and stems of soybean plants, as measured by LC-MS, under hydroponic conditions. The agrochemical concentration increased within the leaves over time from 0.04 to 2.35 μg/g at 0.2 …

Moral Transparency Of And Concerning Algorithmic Tools, Paul Hayes, Ibo Van De Poel, Marc Steen Jun 2022

Moral Transparency Of And Concerning Algorithmic Tools, Paul Hayes, Ibo Van De Poel, Marc Steen

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Algorithms and AI tools are becoming increasingly influential artefacts in commercial and governance contexts. Algorithms and AI tools are not value neutral; to some extent they must be rendered knowable and known as objects, and in their implementation and deployment, to see clearly and understand their implications for moral values, and what actions can be undertaken to optimise them in their design and use towards ethical goals, or whether they are even suitable for particular goals. Transparency is a term with variable uses and interpretations, a problem which can challenge its use in design and policy. Here, we attempt to …

Bringing Technological Transparency To Tenebrous Markets: The Case For Using Blockchain To Validate Carbon Credit Trading Markets, Gary E. Marchant, Zachary Cooper, Philip Gough-Stone Jun 2022

Bringing Technological Transparency To Tenebrous Markets: The Case For Using Blockchain To Validate Carbon Credit Trading Markets, Gary E. Marchant, Zachary Cooper, Philip Gough-Stone

Natural Resources Journal

Carbon reductions have become a priority as companies and other entities emitting greenhouse gases seek to comply with regulatory requirements and commit to voluntary goals that are consistent with their sustainability pledges. These carbon reductions are accounted for by carbon credits, which are tradeable units of carbon reduction that can be used to comply with regulatory or voluntary carbon reduction credits. Many companies are making such carbon reduction promises, and are frequently relying on credits generated by non-traditional mitigation sources such as agriculture or forestry to achieve those reductions and credits. However, the credibility and reliance on such carbon credit …

Deciphering Lessons From The Ashes: Saving The Amazon, Shannon K. Woulfe Jun 2022

Deciphering Lessons From The Ashes: Saving The Amazon, Shannon K. Woulfe

Natural Resources Journal

For over forty years, Brazil, its subnational governments, Indigenous communities, other nations, non-governmental organizations, corporations, and individuals have worked to conserve the Amazon rainforest through a staggering number of diverse international initiatives. While some initiatives have supported Brazil in decreasing the rate of deforestation over the past fifteen years, the 2019 fires demonstrated that destruction continues. Left unchecked, this irreversible destruction promises to amplify. Fortunately, the long history of global involvement in Amazon conservation provides ample lessons for effective, place-based deforestation prevention. Thoughtful and coordinated international action can address the current lethal combination of destructive factors: Brazil’s environmentally hostile federal …

Who Is In Charge Of The Mud?, Mike Dehoff

Natural Resources Journal

The Returning Rapids Project is a team of ordinary people who took an interest in the changes in Cataract Canyon. Our project is a bit of the beginning of a bad joke – a librarian, a pilot, a river guide, and a welder walk into a bar . . . but instead, they go on a trip and spend time talking about what a fast rate of change they are observing . . .

The Kids Are All Right: The Law Of Free Expression And New Information Technologies, Mark Tushnet Jun 2022

The Kids Are All Right: The Law Of Free Expression And New Information Technologies, Mark Tushnet

Catholic University Law Review

Recently the literature on free expression has turned to the question, should the law of free expression be adjusted because of the availability of new information technologies (hereafter NIT), and if so, how? The only thing about NIT that distinguishes them from traditional media is that disseminating expression via NIT is much less expensive than doing so via traditional media. The tenor of recent scholarship on NIT and free expression is that the invention of NIT does support some modification of free expression law. This Essay argues that that conclusion might be correct, but that many of the arguments offered …

Examining Metal Contents In Primary And Secondhand Aerosols Released By Electronic Cigarettes, Kashala Fabrice Kapiamba, Weixing Hao, Stephen Adom, Wenyan Liu, Yue-Wern Huang, Yang Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The usage of electronic cigarettes (ECs) has surged since their invention two decades ago. However, to date, the health effects of EC aerosol exposure are still not well understood because of insufficient data on the chemical composition of EC aerosols and the corresponding evidence of health risks upon exposure. Herein, we quantified the metals in primary and secondhand aerosols generated by three brands of ECs. By combining aerosol filter sampling and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we assessed the mass of metals as a function of EC flavoring, nicotine concentration, device power, puff duration, and aging of the devices. …

Transparency And Reliance In Antidiscrimination Law, Steven L. Willborn Jun 2022

Transparency And Reliance In Antidiscrimination Law, Steven L. Willborn

Catholic University Law Review

All antidiscrimination laws have two structural features – transparency and reliance – that are important, even central, to their design, but have gone largely unnoticed. On transparency, some laws, like the recent salary-ban laws, attempt to prevent the employer from learning about the disfavored factor on the theory that an employer cannot rely on an unknown factor. Other laws require publication of the disfavored factor, such as salary, on the theory that it is harder to discriminate in the sunlight. Still other laws are somewhere between these two extremes. The Americans with Disabilities Act, for example, limits but does not …

Innovation’S Hidden Externalities, Stephanie Plamondon Bair Jun 2022

Innovation’S Hidden Externalities, Stephanie Plamondon Bair

BYU Law Review

When commentators discuss innovation’s externalities, they often classify them into one of two categories. On the positive externalities, or “spillovers” side, legal and economics scholars often speak of the benefits innovation confers on other innovators. Future innovators profit from past innovation as they “stand on the shoulders of giants” to develop progressively new and better innovation. Discussion of innovation’s negative externalities, on the other hand, has mainly focused on social harms not directly related to future innovation that particular advances impose on third parties—the classic example being pollution. Thus, the common understanding is that innovation’s spillovers positively impact innovation (among …

The Internet Immunity Escape Hatch, Gregory M. Dickinson Jun 2022

The Internet Immunity Escape Hatch, Gregory M. Dickinson

BYU Law Review

Internet immunity doctrine is broken, and Congress is helpless. Under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, online entities are absolutely immune from lawsuits related to content authored by third parties. The law has been essential to the internet’s development over the last twenty years, but it has not kept pace with the times and is now deeply flawed. Democrats demand accountability for online misinformation. Republicans decry politically motivated censorship. And all have come together to criticize Section 230’s protection of bad-actor websites. The law’s defects have put it at the center of public debate, with more than …

Supreme Court Legitimacy: A Turn To Constitutional Practice, Thomas G. Donnelly Jun 2022

Supreme Court Legitimacy: A Turn To Constitutional Practice, Thomas G. Donnelly

BYU Law Review

Commentators offer the Justices consistent—if unsolicited—advice: tend to the Supreme Court’s institutional legitimacy. However, to say this—without saying more—is to say very little. Of course, constitutional theorists already wrestle with the meaning of legitimacy—its contours, its complexity, and its influence on the Justices. Political scientists debate the relationship between institutional concerns and judicial behavior. At the same time, previous scholars largely ignore issues of constitutional practice. This is a mistake. In this Article, I take up this neglected topic. To that end, I detail how the individual Justice might work to bolster the Court’s legitimacy in concrete cases. Part of …

Thank You For Not Publishing (Unexamined Patent Applications), Lidiya Mishchenko Jun 2022

Thank You For Not Publishing (Unexamined Patent Applications), Lidiya Mishchenko

BYU Law Review

Since 2000, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (“PTO”) has published nearly all patent applications as they are submitted by applicants. Scholars and practitioners have praised this practice for providing timely notice of the potential legal rights the application may eventually cover. But maximizing timeliness and transparency in this way can also create significant costs, which may chill innovation and deter the development and funding of new research areas. This Article explores these often-unrecognized costs of publishing unexamined patent applications and proposes solutions that balance the benefits of early notice with the costs of patent system uncertainty. Published patent applications …

Public Opinion Governance And Think Tank Research Based On Think Tank Double Helix Methodology, Qianqian Li, Yijun Liu, Ning Ma, Hongbing Wang

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Public opinion governance research is a typical think tank research driven by big data, which should deal with the "five major challenges" faced by China's economic transformation, social transformation, and reform challenges, namely, risk intertwined challenges, modeling complexity challenges, interdisciplinary challenges, social impact challenges, and scenario uncertainty challenges. The Think Tank Double Helix Methodology provides an effective research paradigm to guide the whole process of public opinion governance and think tank research. Based on this methodology, opinion research could effectively respond to the five significant challenges and serve the demands of national governance. This paper demonstrates a deep understanding of …

Marine Ranching Version 3.0: History, Status And Prospects, Hongsheng Yang, Dewen Ding

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Since the 1930s, the construction of marine ranching has successively experienced the version 1.0 (traditional marine ranching) of farming-ranching and engineering, and the version 2.0 (marine ecological ranching) of ecologization and informatization, and now it is about to enter the version 3.0 (global aquatic ecological ranching) of digitalization and systematization, which covers seawater and fresh water. Marine ranching version 3.0 must adhere to the modern aquatic ecological ranching development concept of "ecology, precision, intelligence, integration", characterized by synchronous protection and utilization, expansion of scene and space, breakthrough in core technology, and innovation in development patterns. After establishing the whole industrial …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction:

Hospitalised older adults are prone to functional deterioration, which is more evident in frail older patients and can be further exacerbated by pain. Two interventions that have the potential to prevent progression of frailty and improve patient outcomes in hospitalised older adults but have yet to be subject to clinical trials are nurse-led volunteer support and technology-driven assessment of pain.

Methods and Analysis:

This single-centre, prospective, non-blinded, cluster randomised controlled trial will compare the efficacy of nurse-led volunteer support, technology-driven pain assessment and the combination of the two interventions to usual care for hospitalised older adults. Prior to commencing …

Bildung Und Schule Im Spannungsfeld Pandemiebedingter Herausforderungen: Eine Thematische Analyse Von Akteur-Struktur-Dynamiken, Christian Herzog, Alessandro Immanuel Beil, Peter Kelly

Plymouth Institute of Education

Exploring Structure-Function Relationship In Small-Molecular Catalysts Using Computational And Experimental Methodologies, Avik Bhattacharjee Jun 2022

Exploring Structure-Function Relationship In Small-Molecular Catalysts Using Computational And Experimental Methodologies, Avik Bhattacharjee

Dissertations and Theses

Molecular modeling is a useful tool in the field of catalyst design for various processes. The use of Density Functional Theory (DFT) is routine in almost every discipline of chemistry. This allows for a deeper understanding of a molecular system even in situations where implementation of an experimental technique is unfeasible. However, without the right choice of theory and insufficient description, the model becomes susceptible to produce ambiguous results. This often leads to poor correlation with experimental findings hence an incomplete understanding of the system under study. Hence, to acquire a thorough knowledge of the intricacies involved in a system, …

BACKGROUND: Breast Implant Illness (BII) is a term used to describe a variety of symptoms by patients with breast implants for which there are no abnormal physical or laboratory findings to explain their symptoms. There currently exists a difference of opinion among clinicians and patients concerning the diagnosis and treatment of patients self-reporting BII.

OBJECTIVES: The first aim of this study was to determine if there is a valid indication for "en bloc" capsulectomy in patients self-reporting BII and if the type of capsulectomy performed alters long-term symptom improvement. The second goal was to identify any clinical laboratory differences between …
