The New York State Dental Journal

Purpose: Assess mandibular condylar/subcondylar and angle fracture patterns in the presence or absence of third molars. Patients and Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 234 patients with mandibular fractures. Odds ratios were calculated to determine relative risk of angle and condylar/subcondylar fractures when third molar teeth were present or absent. Results: Condylar/subcondylar fractures were twice as likely to be avoided if a third molar was present; angle fractures were twice as likely to occur with retained third molars. Conclusions: A twofold decrease occurs in the risk of condylar/subcondylar fracture if a third molar is present and a twofold increase occurs in …

Harnessing Confidence For Report Aggregation In Crowdsourcing Environments, Hadeel Alhosaini, Xianzhi Wang, Lina Yao, Zhong Yang, Farookh Hussain, Ee-Peng Lim Jul 2022

Harnessing Confidence For Report Aggregation In Crowdsourcing Environments, Hadeel Alhosaini, Xianzhi Wang, Lina Yao, Zhong Yang, Farookh Hussain, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Crowdsourcing is an effective means of accomplishing human intelligence tasks by leveraging the collective wisdom of crowds. Given reports of various accuracy degrees from workers, it is important to make wise use of these reports to derive accurate task results. Intuitively, a task result derived from a sufficient number of reports bears lower uncertainty, and higher uncertainty otherwise. Existing report aggregation research, however, has largely neglected the above uncertainty issue. In this regard, we propose a novel report aggregation framework that defines and incorporates a new confidence measure to quantify the uncertainty associated with tasks and workers, thereby enhancing result …

Uncovering Inclusivity Gaps In Design Pedagogy Through The Digital Design Marginalization Framework, Jaisie Sin, Cosmin Munteanu, Michael Nixon, Velian Pandeliev, Garreth W. Tigwell, Kristen Shinohara, Anthony Tang, Steve Szigeti

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Designers play a key role in the design of inclusive and socially conscious interfaces. Thus, it is imperative for designers to be thoughtful of the ethical and social implications of design. However, gaps in the foundational training that designers receive (e.g., as university students) can negatively impact their ability to consider the social implications of their design practice. This can result in consequences such as digital marginalization, which, as defined by the Digital Design Marginalization (DDM) framework, is the “pushing away”, whether intentional or not, of a defined group of users from a digital or online service or system, where …

Revealing The Dark Core Behind The Dark Triad, Cody Eric Harrell Jul 2022

Revealing The Dark Core Behind The Dark Triad, Cody Eric Harrell

Theses and Dissertations

Dark or malevolent personality traits (e.g., The Dark Triad) have gained increasing attention in recent years which has led researchers to explore the existence of a common factor of dark personality traits (Vize et al., 2020; Moshagen et al., 2018). A Dark Core was extracted from existing Dark Triad measures using principal component analysis and was subsequently analyzed in relation to other personality traits that are commonly studied in conjunction with common cores of maladaptive personality traits (e.g., agreeableness and honesty-humility; Vize et al., 2020; Moshagen et al., 2020b). A General Factor of Personality (GFP) was also extracted for statistical …

Examining The Generalizability Of Research Findings From Archival Data, Andrew Delios, Et. Al., Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This initiative examined systematically the extent to which a large set of archival research findings generalizes across contexts. We repeated the key analyses for 29 original strategic management effects in the same context (direct reproduction) as well as in 52 novel time periods and geographies; 45% of the reproductions returned results matching the original reports together with 55% of tests in different spans of years and 40% of tests in novel geographies. Some original findings were associated with multiple new tests. Reproducibility was the best predictor of generalizability—for the findings that proved directly reproducible, 84% emerged in other available time …

Order Constraints In Optimal Transport, Fabian Lim, Laura Wynter, Shiau Hong Lim Jul 2022

Order Constraints In Optimal Transport, Fabian Lim, Laura Wynter, Shiau Hong Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Optimal transport is a framework for comparing measures whereby a cost is incurred for transporting one measure to another. Recent works have aimed to improve optimal transport plans through the introduction of various forms of structure. We introduce novel order constraints into the optimal transport formulation to allow for the incorporation of structure. We define an efficient method for obtaining explainable solutions to the new formulation that scales far better than standard approaches. The theoretical properties of the method are provided. We demonstrate experimentally that order constraints improve explainability using the e-SNLI (Stanford Natural Language Inference) dataset that includes human-annotated …

Implications Of The Actin Cytoskeleton On The Multi-Step Process Of [ Psi+] Prion Formation, Jane E. Dorweiler, Douglas R. Lyke, Nathan P. Lemoine, Sam Guereca, Hannah E. Buchholz, Emily R. Legan, Claire M. Radtke, Anita L. Manogaran Jul 2022

Implications Of The Actin Cytoskeleton On The Multi-Step Process Of [ Psi+] Prion Formation, Jane E. Dorweiler, Douglas R. Lyke, Nathan P. Lemoine, Sam Guereca, Hannah E. Buchholz, Emily R. Legan, Claire M. Radtke, Anita L. Manogaran

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Yeast prions are self-perpetuating misfolded proteins that are infectious. In yeast, [PSI+] is the prion form of the Sup35 protein. While the study of [PSI+] has revealed important cellular mechanisms that contribute to prion propagation, the underlying cellular factors that influence prion formation are not well understood. Prion formation has been described as a multi-step process involving both the initial nucleation and growth of aggregates, followed by the subsequent transmission of prion particles to daughter cells. Prior evidence suggests that actin plays a role in this multi-step process, but actin’s precise role is unclear. Here, we …

Plant Growth-Promoting Activity Of Bacteria Isolated From Asian Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Depends On Rice Genotype, Nasim Maghboli Balasjin, James Maki, Michael Schläppi, Christopher Marshall Jul 2022

Plant Growth-Promoting Activity Of Bacteria Isolated From Asian Rice (Oryza Sativa L.) Depends On Rice Genotype, Nasim Maghboli Balasjin, James Maki, Michael Schläppi, Christopher Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Asian rice is one of the most important crops because it is a staple food for almost half of the world’s population. To have production of rice keep pace with a growing world population, it is anticipated that the use of fertilizers will also need to increase, which may cause environmental damage through runoff impacts. An alternative strategy to increase crop yield is the use of plant growth-promoting bacteria. Thousands of microbial species can exist in association with plant roots and shoots, and some are critical to the plant’s survival. We isolated 140 bacteria from two distantly related rice accessions …

Without Accommodation, Jennifer B. Shinall Jul 2022

Without Accommodation, Jennifer B. Shinall

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), workers with disabilities have the legal right to reasonable workplace accommodations provided by employers. Because this legal right is unique to disabled workers, these workers could, in theory, enjoy greater access to the types of accommodations that are desirable to all workers including the ability to work from home, to work flexible hours, and to take leave. This Article compares access to these accommodations, which have become increasingly desirable during the COVID-19 pandemic, between disabled workers and nondisabled workers. Using 2017-2018 data from the American Time Use Survey's Leave and Job Flexibilities Module, …

Attitudes Of Major Religious Organizations In Ukraine To Abortion And Reproductive Medicine, Kateryna Karpenko, Alla Guzhva Jul 2022

Attitudes Of Major Religious Organizations In Ukraine To Abortion And Reproductive Medicine, Kateryna Karpenko, Alla Guzhva

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The attitude of the largest religions of Ukraine to reproductive medicine is determined by a variety of practical approaches, which are still in process of change between the rather strict negative official position of major religious organizations of Ukraine, on the one hand, and a rather liberal approach to reproductive medicine in secular legislation of Ukraine. The harsh negative official position of the main religious organizations of Ukraine to surrogacy and abortions is presented in a joint document adopted by the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations. While the diversity of practical approaches of these organizations is represented by …

Monitoring Child Poverty And Exclusion Through The Community-Based Monitoring System (Cbms), Celia M. Reyes, Anne Bernadette E. Mandap Jul 2022

Monitoring Child Poverty And Exclusion Through The Community-Based Monitoring System (Cbms), Celia M. Reyes, Anne Bernadette E. Mandap

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper aims to apply the Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) methodology for analyzing multidimensional poverty among children. The child multidimensional poverty measured using CBMS data examines the nature and extent of deprivations of children in terms of nine (9) dimensions covering non-income and income measures of poverty. Aside from generating a child MPI using CBMS indicators at the local level, geospatial data is generated to show how the CBMS-MPI methodology can facilitate analysis of situation of children across sub-locations and how it can be used for more informed planning of appropriate interventions, and better targeted program implementation. Using CBMS data …

Communication In The Gig Economy: Buying And Selling In Online Freelance Marketplaces, Stephan Ludwig, Dennis Herhausen, Dhruv Grewal, Liliana Bove, Sabine Benoit, Ko De Ruyter, Peter Urwin Jul 2022

Communication In The Gig Economy: Buying And Selling In Online Freelance Marketplaces, Stephan Ludwig, Dennis Herhausen, Dhruv Grewal, Liliana Bove, Sabine Benoit, Ko De Ruyter, Peter Urwin

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The proliferating gig economy relies on online freelance marketplaces, which support relatively anonymous interactions through text-based messages. Informational asymmetries thus arise that can lead to exchange uncertainties between buyers and freelancers. Conventional marketing thought recommends reducing such uncertainty. However, uncertainty reduction and uncertainty management theories indicate that buyers and freelancers might benefit more from balancing-rather than reducing-uncertainty, such as by strategically adhering to or deviating from common communication principles. With dyadic analyses of calls for bids and bids from a leading online freelance marketplace, this study reveals that buyers attract more bids from freelancers when they provide moderate degrees of …

Access To Online Formative Assessments In Introductory Biology Courses: Investigating Barriers To Student Engagement, Allison M. Upchurch Jul 2022

Access To Online Formative Assessments In Introductory Biology Courses: Investigating Barriers To Student Engagement, Allison M. Upchurch

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Instructors use a variety of online formative assessment (FA) activities to support learning outside of class. Previous studies have revealed barriers for students in online courses, but little is known about the barriers students experience when completing online FA assignments. Understanding these barriers to access is critical to fostering more inclusive learning for all students. Using a framework from previous work in online learning, we examined student perceptions of online FA access with respect to five barrier categories: technical resources, instructor organization, social interactions, personal engagement, and learning environment. We developed and administered a survey to over 1200 undergraduate biology …

Methanogen Metabolic Flexibility, Sean R. Carr Jul 2022

Methanogen Metabolic Flexibility, Sean R. Carr

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Methanogens are obligately anaerobic archaea which produce methane as a byproduct of their respiration. They are found across a wide diversity of environments and play an important role in cycling carbon in anaerobic spaces and the removal of harmful fermentation byproducts which would otherwise inhibit other organisms. Methanogens subsist on low-energy substrates which requires them to utilize a highly efficient central metabolism which greatly favors respiratory byproducts over biomass. This metabolic strategy creates high substrate:product conversion ratios which is industrially relevant for the production of biomethane, but may also allow for the production of value-added commodities. Particularly of interest are …

What’S (Race In) The Law Got To Do With It: Incorporating Race In Legal Curriculum, Sonia Gipson Rankin Jul 2022

What’S (Race In) The Law Got To Do With It: Incorporating Race In Legal Curriculum, Sonia Gipson Rankin

Faculty Scholarship

Gen Z is defined as including persons born after 1996 and, in 2018, the first Gen Z would have been twenty-two years old, the historically traditional age that many complete undergraduate studies and enter law school. With Gen Z entering law schools, the legal academy has been wholeheartedly preparing for the arrival of the first truly digital native generation in a myriad of ways. However, law training has been slow to progress in addressing the unspoken complexities of context and unconscious bias in the classroom with this population. Today’s Gen Z students were predominately raised in de facto segregated schools …

Normalizing Reproductive Genetic Innovation, Myrisha S. Lewis Jul 2022

Normalizing Reproductive Genetic Innovation, Myrisha S. Lewis

Faculty Publications

Many societally accepted techniques were quite controversial at inception and for decades after. For example, historically, dialysis was “unnatural,” vaccination was “the poisoned quill,” and artificial insemination was akin to adultery. Despite social and cultural hurdles, the aforementioned medical techniques have today attained overall public acceptance, permissive legal treatment, and even health insurance coverage in some cases.

Unlike many now-routine treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg freezing, and organ transplantation, which flourished without significant governmental intervention, today’s controversial medical treatments, especially those involving reproductive genetic innovation, face intense regulatory barriers. Reproductive genetic innovation, which is the combination of IVF …

A Concept For Weighting Sentiment Phrase Using Deterministic Solution Of Algebraic Equations, Maryam Jalali, Morteza Zahedi, Abdolali Basiri Jul 2022

A Concept For Weighting Sentiment Phrase Using Deterministic Solution Of Algebraic Equations, Maryam Jalali, Morteza Zahedi, Abdolali Basiri

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Many text mining methods have used statistical information as text and language-independent procedures that are not deterministic. On the other hand, grammatical structure-based methods are limited to use in a certain language and text. We aim to suggest an algorithmic algebraic equation in a deterministic and nonprobabilistic way while maintaining the advantage of language independence. We propose a mathematical approach that transforms text and labels into a set of dumb equations. By solving the equations, each word is assigned a weight that can reflect the semantic information of that word, then we use the proposed algorithm to build a novel …

Using Learning Progressions To Enhance Student Outcomes And Performance, Andrea Werner Jul 2022

Using Learning Progressions To Enhance Student Outcomes And Performance, Andrea Werner

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Learning discrepancies are difficult for students to recover from. In earlier years, rote memorization, drill-and-practice, and whole-group instruction have proven little success. Students continually lack proficiency and have minimal gain year after year. More recently, small groups and interventions have made improvements on student proficiency, but they still struggle to increase overall student achievement. Research suggests learning progressions as a dynamic, individualized approach to increase not only academic achievement, but also depth of knowledge and student efficacy. Learning progressions allow for flexibility in levels of learning, the content taught, and how a student grasps information. Then learning progressions promote rigorous …

Articles

With the ever-increasing demands of e-commerce, the need for smarter warehousing is increasing exponentially. Such warehouses requires industry automation beyond Industry 4.0. In this work, we use consumer-grade millimeter-wave (mmWave) equipment to enable fast, and low-cost implementation of our localization system. However, the consumer-grade mmWave routers suffer from coarse-grained channel state information due to cost-effective antenna array design limiting the accuracy of localization systems. To address these challenges, we present a Machine Learning (ML) and Kalman Filter (KF) integrated localization system (KF-Loc). The ML model learns the complex wireless features for predicting the static position of the robot. When in …
