The U.N. Global Compact And Accountability Of Transnational Corporations: Separating Myth From Realities, Evaristus Oshionebo

Florida Journal of International Law

This Article appraises the GC as an instrument for promoting corporate responsibility and accountability. While acknowledging that the GC does have potential to produce positive results, it nonetheless highlights several problems and hurdles which it must overcome. Part II examines the goals and structure of the GC, as well as the potential for successful outcomes. Part III focuses on inherent problems facing the GC: it implicit but erroneous assumption that the irresponsible behavior of TNCs is attributable to their lack of knowledge about good governance practices, and hence, its focus on “learning”; its non-regulatory nature; its inability thus far to …

War Or Peace: It Is Time For The United States To Ratify The 1954 Hague Convention For The Protection Of Cultural Property In The Event Of Armed Conflicts, Juliana V. Campagna Jul 2022

War Or Peace: It Is Time For The United States To Ratify The 1954 Hague Convention For The Protection Of Cultural Property In The Event Of Armed Conflicts, Juliana V. Campagna

Florida Journal of International Law

In this Article, I will first discuss the rampant looting and destruction of civilization’s cultural property occurring in Iraq since the American-led occupation. The U.S. Department of Defenses’s response to this violation of international law is: “stuff happens.” In arguing that the United States must ratify and adhere to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, I then will consider the historical development of the concepts articulated in this treaty. The 1954 Hague Convention is a Janus-faced instrument: it is simultaneously the last Hague convention on the laws of war, and …

Food Insecurity In An Anthropogenic Age: An Analysis Into How Consumer Demand Will Shift During Crisis Events, Chloe G. Parsons, Christina Kuchmaner

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Consumers in the United States may need to adjust their food demand due to food insecurity caused by climate warming events. Research has focused on how climate change impacts food supply chains and distribution; however, there was little research on how consumers responded to these changes. This study analyzed how consumers across the United States responded to food insecurity caused by crisis events (i.e. pandemics and climate change), how consumers shifted from grocery store vendors to local food vendors, and if migration or food miles may increase based on potential food shortages. One study was initiated through survey and a …

Exploring The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Lgbtq+ Intimate Communication, Jakob L. Coykendall Jul 2022

Exploring The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Lgbtq+ Intimate Communication, Jakob L. Coykendall

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The question guiding this exploratory qualitative research study is, “How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted LGBTQ+ intimate communication and relationships?” Recently, scholars have demanded that communication scholarship be conducted through an intersectional lens that analyzes multiple dimensions of social identities, including LGBTQ+ identities. Queer Theory poses questions around gender, sexual, and romantic identities that can help expand our understanding of different forms of intimate communication. “Queering” interpersonal communication research involves challenging traditional understandings of communication within identities such as sexuality and gender at the individual and structural levels (Chevrette, 2013). Queering communication research supports a more in depth analysis of …

Understanding How High Levels Of Noise Affect The Equine Auditory System, Shelby Brown Jul 2022

Understanding How High Levels Of Noise Affect The Equine Auditory System, Shelby Brown

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Abstract

Mounted shooting is becoming a very popular sport within the equestrian community, exposing many horses to extreme levels of noise that the animals would not be exposed to otherwise. I selected this project because it is important for me to know how this hobby that I personally enjoy is impacting the health and well-being of my equine partners. Veterinarians can provide an elementary answer by clapping and checking for a physical reaction. However, that does not tell the client much other than the animal responded to one auditory cue.

It is important to understand how firearm exposure could affect …

Master's Portfolio, Jennifer Cousino

Master of Arts in English Plan II Graduate Projects

I was a teacher at a high school in the Cabrini-Green complex in Chicago in the 1990s when the buildings were starting to be emptied. I saw firsthand the beginnings of the removal of nearly 15,000 people from their homes when the first building came down in 1995, three years after the first Candyman film. I wrote this academic paper as part of a graduate seminar with Dr. Piya Pal-Lapinski - Victorian Monsters: Fiction and Film 1837 to 2021 at Bowling Green State University in the United States. My paper examines the 2021 film and the sociopolitical and historical context …

Improving Saint Louis University Mental Status (Slums) Exam Adherence, Kelsie Patek

Dissertations

Problem: Mild Neurocognitive Disorder (MNCD) and dementia remain one of the most common debilitating problems facing the elderly. The Saint Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) Exam is a screening questionnaire to assess for MNCD or dementia. With the utilization of the SLUMS, clinicians can detect cognitive impairment and provide early intervention resulting in improved function and delayed progression of illness. The aim of this project was to increase the rate of SLUMS completion by at least 75% at a long-term care facility in a rural Midwestern state and to assess changes in diagnoses and treatment plans resulting from use of …

Standardizing Discharge Practices For Pediatric Urology Outpatient Procedures: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bush

Dissertations

Background: Standard discharge instructions of verbal and written methods are only understood by about 45-50% of caregivers. Video discharge instructions (VDIs) in addition to standard methods of verbal and written instructions can be very effective for caregiver comprehension (CC), retaining discharge education information and improving patient outcomes. Problem: In an outpatient surgery department in a Midwestern Children’s hospital, 100% of the discharge instructions for pediatric urology outpatient procedures are different than the instructions given to caregivers by the surgeon. Methods: The study utilizes a descriptive evaluation of change in how discharge instructions were written and provided. Interventions …

The Entrenchment Of The Ideal Worker Norm During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Evidence From Working Mothers In The U.S., Mona Zanhour, Dana Sumpter

All Faculty Open Access Publications

We study shifts in the ideal worker culture as experienced by working mothers across organizations in the United States during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the experiences of 53 interviewees in how they attended to increased responsibilities across both work and family domains, we saw an entrenchment of the ideal worker culture across nearly all organizations and professions. This manifested in three levels, as (1) a reinforced ideal worker culture in the workplace through work-intensification, increased competitiveness, and surface-level support; (2) the reinforcing of organizations’ ideal worker norms at home, with gendered division of space and labor, and (3) experienced …

Dental Screening And Caries Prevention In Pediatric Primary Care, Amy Hoch Jul 2022

Dental Screening And Caries Prevention In Pediatric Primary Care, Amy Hoch

Dissertations

Problem: Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most common chronic condition worldwide. Although the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends all children through age five receive a fluoride treatment during well-child visits, this often does not happen. This project aimed to implement caries risk assessment (CRA) in the pediatric primary care setting and increase the rate of fluoride varnish applications and pediatric dental referrals.

Methods: An observational, descriptive study design was used to review retrospective data and collect prospective data on fluoride varnish applications in a pediatric primary care office located in a Midwestern suburban community. A validated CRA was …

Micro Heat Exchanger To Cool Cerebrospinal Fluid For Brain Injury Treatment, Sachin Dahiya Jul 2022

Micro Heat Exchanger To Cool Cerebrospinal Fluid For Brain Injury Treatment, Sachin Dahiya

LSU Master's Theses

Hypothermia is accepted as a method to preserve cells and tissue. Clinical evidence shows that administration of hypothermia could lead to neuroprotection after cardiac arrest. Non-invasive methods such as surface cooling devices, drugs and cold liquid ventilation are available to induce hypothermia. These approaches for achieving hypothermia have not been optimized yet. The surface cooling methods are generally slow and may lead to additional thermal shock to the body. Here, we propose a rapid, selective cooling method for the brain using a micro heat exchanger to cool the cerebrospinal fluids (CSF). We designed and 3D printed a U-type heat exchanger …
