Abstract
Modeling and Simulation are fundamental skills for all engineering students [1]. However, students are usually introduced to these concepts during their junior or even as late as their senior year. Our research aims at familiarizing students with Modeling and Simulation tools in their first year of engineering studies. We consider the fact that proper learning involves using long-term memory (in contrast with working memory) and this is accomplished by the gradual introduction and practice of the …

LSU Master's Theses
As a mechanism to explore my temporary home in Louisiana, Winding Down River Road is a collection of artworks that integrates natural materials collected from landscapes in southern Louisiana with steel and petroleum-based products. My interest in researching environmental issues, ecology, and industry has shaped my vehicles for observation and how I generate data. Through a variety of methodologies, I am considering how climate change is forcing many of us to re-contextualize how our home can be affected by the very industries we rely on. Personal engagement with residents living in the dystopian atmosphere of southern Louisiana’s industrial corridor and …

Assessment Of 3d Mesh Watermarking Techniques, Neha Sharma, Jeebananda Panda
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
With the increasing usage of three-dimensional meshes in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), medical imaging, and entertainment fields like virtual reality, etc., the authentication problems and awareness of intellectual property protection have risen since the last decade. Numerous watermarking schemes have been suggested to protect ownership and prevent the threat of data piracy. This paper begins with the potential difficulties that arose when dealing with three-dimension entities in comparison to two-dimensional entities and also lists possible algorithms suggested hitherto and their comprehensive analysis. Attacks, also play a crucial role in deciding a watermarking algorithm so an attack based analysis is also presented …

Developmental Competence Of Oocytes Derived From Seasonally Anovulatory Mares Treated With Estradiol And Sulpiride, Michelle O. Vetter
LSU Master's Theses
Over the course of two years (2021-2022), two experiments were conducted during the nonbreeding seasons to evaluate the in vitro developmental potential of oocytes derived from seasonally anovulatory mares treated with ECP-sulpiride. The objective of experiments 1 and 2 were to compare pooled recovery and maturation rates of oocytes from mares treated with estradiol cypionate (ECP) and sulpiride with oocytes collected from naturally transitional mares (controls). Cleavage rates of oocytes subjected to intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) were compared only in experiment 2. In experiments 1 and 2, a total of 36 light horse and pony-cross anovulatory mares were used. Treatment …

Last month, the federal government passed the first gun safety legislation in decades, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, while at the same time, the Supreme Court declared a constitutional right to carry guns in public. It is important then to assess where this country finds itself with regard to gun policy after these two seemingly contrasting and momentous events.

In 2000 a Stanford professor raped me. My rape is now older than I was. (I’m still not as old as he was.) The more time passes the more I’m struck by Stanford’s apathy and fecklessness about sexual violence. I wrote a letter asking Stanford to stop compounding the abuse and to reckon with its rape culture. This letter—including the “Incomplete Compilation of Links to Sources Documenting Stanford’s History of Sexual Violence, in Chronological Order”—should be mandatory reading for administrators, faculty, students, alumni, and stakeholders at both Stanford and CUNY. #MeToo #MeTooAcademia

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
There are vital links among mental health conditions, chronic diseases, and substance use disorders. Simultaneous examination of the relationship among these three conditions is essential for providing well-integrated care to rural residents who have limited resources and for representing medically underserved areas. We aimed to assess the burden of behavioral health conditions and chronic diseases from a rural Texas community to garner context-specific insights and inform effective health promotion strategies in similar communities. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 181 residents from various zip codes in a rural Texas county. A self-administered, 18-item health-needs questionnaire was used to collect data …

The use of Phyllanthus emblica (gooseberry) leaf extract to synthesize Boron-doped zinc oxide nanosheets (B-doped ZnO-NSs) is deliberated in this article. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows a network of synthesized nanosheets randomly aligned side by side in a B-doped ZnO (15 wt% B) sample. The thickness of B-doped ZnO-NSs is in the range of 20–80 nm. B-doped ZnO-NSs were tested against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Escherichia coli. Against gram-negative bacterium (K. pneumonia and E. coli), B-doped ZnO displays enhanced antibacterial activity with 26 and 24 mm of inhibition zone, respectively. …

Relationship Among Department Satisfaction, Training, And Police Behavior, Matthew Garvin
Master's Theses
The call for police reform has been sparked by incidents involving the shooting and killing of individuals by the police. Public and political scrutiny of police behavior and procedures has created a social identity of “Us Versus Them” mentality among police officers. Proactive policing strategies have diminished in response to the heightened scrutiny of police procedures and behavior, in turn, initiating a reduction in police protection and an increase in crime. While research has identified the importance of police presence, the literature does not yet answer questions regarding factors which influence police proactivity. To address the gap in understanding, this …

Compositional And Metabolic Responses Of Autotrophic Microbial Community To Salinity In Lacustrine Environments, Yun Fang, Jun Liu, Jian Yang, Geng Wu, Zhengshuang Hua, Hailiang Dong, Brian P. Hedlund, Brett J. Baker, Hongchen Jiang
Life Sciences Faculty Research
The compositional and physiological responses of autotrophic microbiotas to salinity in lakes remain unclear. In this study, the community composition and carbon fixation pathways of autotrophic microorganisms in lacustrine sediments with a salinity gradient (82.6 g/L to 0.54 g/L) were investigated by using metagenomic analysis. A total of 117 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) with carbon fixation potentially belonging to 20 phyla were obtained. The abundance of these potential autotrophs increased significantly with decreasing salinity, and the variation of sediment autotrophic microbial communities was mainly affected by salinity, pH, and total organic carbon. Notably, along the decreasing salinity gradient, the dominant lineage …

The Copyright Wasteland, Shani Shisha
BYU Law Review
The Copyright Act grants certain exclusive rights to authors of creative works. But many of these exclusive rights are notoriously underspecified. And while a rich body of case law grapples with one copyright entitlement—the right to reproduce the copyrighted work— courts rarely engage in earnest with other exclusive rights. As a result, courts appear to have only a rudimentary understanding of the precise scope of copyright law. Because courts focus almost singularly on questions of reproduction, other exclusive rights fall by the wayside. This Article contends, counterintuitively, that the problem is traceable to a much-maligned feature of our copyright system: …
