Not Just Monetary: Arts And Humanities Scholars’ Perspectives On The Costs Of Open Access Publishing, Lindsey Skaggs, Rachel Scott, Colby Cilento

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Bibliometric and survey-based studies have documented different open access (OA) publishing practices among scholars across academic disciplines. This article reports on interviews conducted with arts and humanities scholars from the United States and explores how OA intersects with their research and publication practices. Beyond the considerable financial costs of OA publishing, findings demonstrate that arts and humanities scholars contend with opportunity, reputational, equity, and time costs as they consider and engage with OA publishing. The authors discuss the implications of these costs for librarians who facilitate the dissemination, discovery, and preservation of arts and humanities scholarship.

What Ai Can Tell Us About Society: Insights From Social Media Data, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale

Business Analytics Faculty Publications

AI can summarize how people feel.
But who decides what counts as “feeling”?

The lecture series brings in scholars to engage the wider university community in meaningful conversations. I am using that space to ask a question at the center of my work:

When AI tells us what society thinks, is it actually telling us the truth, or just what it has been trained to recognize as truth?

My talk, “What AI Can Tell Us About Society: Insights from Social Media Data,” leans directly into that tension.

I will break down how sentiment analysis works in practice, share insights from …

Pulse Wave Velocity In Atrial Fibrillation: A Scoping Review Of Clinical Relevance, Oren G. Nedjar, Zaneh Kahook, Syed Maaz Shah, Christos G. Mihos, Marc M. Kesselman

Student Publications

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with high morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden. Arterial stiffness (AS) alters cardiac loading conditions and contributes to ventricular arterial uncoupling (VAC), diastolic dysfunction, and atrial remodeling. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the standard noninvasive measure of AS, but its role across the spectrum of AF has not been clearly defined. This scoping review assessed the existing literature on PWV and AF, with attention to disease onset, clinical characteristics, progression, treatment response, and outcomes. A scoping review was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses …

Enameling Coating Of Pipes: Thermal Proprieties And Corrosion Tests, Signo Reis, Genda Chen, Mike Koenigstein, Liang Fan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Enamel coating on pipelines can be done in several ways such as the wet process, plasma spray, and electrostatic process. Wet process requires little capital expenses and provides an acceptable finish for industrial applications particularly when the part to be coated is small. Electrostatic process of enamel powder is most promising to coating large pipelines in field conditions. The enamel coating applied by the electrostatic process is very consistent and smooth since each particle is glass only. However, the powder is very fragile until fired and the charge retention is lowered in high humidity conditions. Coupons cut from a full-size …

Natural Adversaries: Fuzzing Autonomous Vehicles With Realistic Roadside Object Placements, Yang Sun, Haoyu Wang, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The emergence of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) has spurred research into testing the resilience of their perception systems, i.e., ensuring that they are not susceptible to critical misjudgements. It is important that these systems are tested not only with respect to other vehicles on the road, but also with respect to objects placed on the roadside. Trash bins, billboards, and greenery are examples of such objects, typically positioned according to guidelines developed for the human visual system, which may not align perfectly with the needs of AVs. Existing tests, however, usually focus on adversarial objects with conspicuous shapes or patches, which …

Exploring The Impact Of University-Recognized Spaces On Racial Battle Fatigue Among Black Faculty & Staff At Historically White Institutions, Tiffany M. Courseault May 2026

Exploring The Impact Of University-Recognized Spaces On Racial Battle Fatigue Among Black Faculty & Staff At Historically White Institutions, Tiffany M. Courseault

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Black Faculty and Staff (BFS) at Historically White Institutions (HWIs) navigate environments shaped by racial microaggressions, systemic inequities, and institutional marginalization. These conditions contribute to Racial Battle Fatigue (RBF), a psychological, behavioral, and physiological response to sustained exposure to racialized stress. While institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives are often positioned as mechanisms for improving campus climate, existing research suggests they frequently fail to address the lived realities of BFS. This study examined how university-recognized communal spaces function as critical sites of support, resistance, and mitigation within these environments.

Using a narrative inquiry methodology, this study explored the lived …

Thermo-Hydro-Chemical Coupled Numerical Modeling Of Hydrogen-Thermal Co-Development In Hydraulically Fractured Peridotite, Jiacheng Dai, Zhonglin Ma, Yunzhi Yue, Yujie Yuan, Shouceng Tian May 2026

Thermo-Hydro-Chemical Coupled Numerical Modeling Of Hydrogen-Thermal Co-Development In Hydraulically Fractured Peridotite, Jiacheng Dai, Zhonglin Ma, Yunzhi Yue, Yujie Yuan, Shouceng Tian

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hydrogen generation through serpentinization reactions in peridotite formations under high temperature conditions represents a promising avenue for subsurface hydrogen production. However, the thermal energy in the formation environment have not been sufficiently considered. To integrate hydrogen production with thermal energy development, this study develops a thermo-hydro-chemical coupled numerical model, which is used to investigate hydrogen-thermal co-development in hydraulically fractured peridotite. Given that the hydrogen-thermal co-development process involves fluid flow, heat transfer and serpentinization reactions, the governing equations are formulated based on Darcy flow and energy conservation equations, with serpentinization kinetics incorporated through the reactive source terms. To evaluate hydrogen production …

How Ai Destroys Institutions, Woodrow Hartzog, Jessica Silbey May 2026

How Ai Destroys Institutions, Woodrow Hartzog, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

Civic institutions—the rule of law, universities, and a free press—are the backbone of democratic life. They are the mechanisms through which complex societies encourage cooperation and stability, while also adapting to changing circumstances. The real superpower of institutions is their ability to evolve and adapt within a hierarchy of authority and a framework for roles and rules, while maintaining legitimacy for the knowledge produced and the actions taken. Purpose-driven institutions built around transparency, cooperation, and accountability empower individuals to take intellectual risks and challenge the status quo. This happens through the machinations of interpersonal relationships within those institutions, which broaden …

Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM

The Functions of Role-Playing Games: How Participants Create Community, Solve Problems and Explore Identity, by Sarah Lynne Bowman, is an ambitious, wide-ranging, and still necessary work for role-playing game studies. Published in 2010, the book proposes that role-playing and roleplaying games fulfill three main social and psychological functions: creating community, facilitating problem solving, and enabling the exploration of identity. Bowman develops this thesis through a combination of theoretical review, cultural reflection, and participant-observer ethnography, based on interviews with players of tabletop role-playing games, live-action roleplaying games, and virtual environments. Organized into seven chapters, the book moves clearly from the …

Antidiscrimination, Not Anti-Dei: The Real Story Of The Supreme Court's Recent Title Vii Precedent, Madeline H. Meth

Faculty Scholarship

For several years, my colleague and I had been litigating employment discrimination cases with facts that shocked our friends and family. For example, we fought Dallas County over a women-work-the-weekend policy that required women detention officers to work weekends while male colleagues took the weekends off. Likewise, we challenged the City of Cleveland when it moved our client, an emergency medical services supervisor, from the day shift to the night shift explicitly because he is Black. Then, in April 2024, in one of our client’s cases, Muldrow v. City of St. Louis, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously overruled the …

Representative And Preferred Skin Color Rendition Of Photos And Avatars In Optical-See Through Augmented Reality, Dara Dimoff May 2026

Representative And Preferred Skin Color Rendition Of Photos And Avatars In Optical-See Through Augmented Reality, Dara Dimoff

Theses

Human skin color is embedded with information about mood, health, and age. While facial color is widely studied in dermatology and cosmetics, there is limited data available to map the subjective experience of skin color to measured data. The ability to derive the color that best represents a person’s skin would be valuable in a wide range of applications, from identifying an appropriate makeup foundation to achieving white balance in a video. When displaying skin tones, it is well-known that preferred renderings are different from accurate renderings. Rendering skin tones becomes more nuanced with complex rendering technologies such as augmented …

The Future Of Airport Operating Models And Seamless Passenger Journeys: Strategic Readiness Implications For Dubai World Central (2035–2045), Mohammad Abdulla Alsuwaidi

Theses

Dubai World Central is being developed to support a major expansion of Dubai’s aviation capacity. Its planned scale raises questions beyond terminal construction and technology pro- curement because airlines, airport operators and government authorities must coordinate passenger processing while maintaining security, public confidence and operational continu- ity. This thesis examines how airport operating models and end-to-end passenger processing may evolve during 2035–2045 and assesses the strategic readiness implications for DWC. A qualitative, desk-based design was adopted using peer-reviewed research, official aviation publications, government documents, airport implementation evidence and selected industry reports. The analysis combined PEST horizon scanning, a technology-readiness assessment, …

Energy Loss Hotspot Mapping In Power Distribution Networks, Abdulla Alhammadi May 2026

Energy Loss Hotspot Mapping In Power Distribution Networks, Abdulla Alhammadi

Theses

The electricity systems used in power distribution in the United States also consume a lot of electricity to warm up until it gets to homes, business or industries. These are technical losses which are caused by the physical resistance of the aging electrical equipment like transformers, conductors and distribution lines. With the aging of infrastructure, the resistance rises, and the amount of wasted energy increases. Although this is a large problem, most utility companies continue to use rough age estimations or customer complaints instead of using more direct and objective data-driven techniques to determine the concentration of the worst losses. …

Delaware’S Agency Problem, Charles K. Whitehead May 2026

Delaware’S Agency Problem, Charles K. Whitehead

Vanderbilt Law Review

Delaware is widely regarded as the gold standard in corporate law, largely due to its expertise and responsiveness to evolving business needs. But that status comes at a cost. Delaware’s corporate statutes are typically drafted by a small group of repeat players—primarily attorneys from some of Delaware’s leading law firms—whose proposals are routinely enacted with minimal public input. This closed process raises familiar agency concerns, but with a twist: While corporate law aims to mitigate first-order agency problems between corporate managers and shareholders, the lawmaking process itself may be affected by the self-interest of those drafting the statutes—a second-order agency …

Discriminatory Bankruptcy Trusts, Nicole Langston May 2026

Discriminatory Bankruptcy Trusts, Nicole Langston

Vanderbilt Law Review

Hundreds of thousands of people who’ve been exposed to asbestos and opioids have had their claims funneled into trusts through mass-tort bankruptcy cases. At their start, both the asbestos and opioid epidemics were limited to occupations and geographic locations that primarily affected lower-class white men. Today, however, women and people of color are also harmed. Like the claimants of earlier generations, their claims are funneled into bankruptcy trusts. Women and people of color have unequal access to treatment and have higher mortality rates from their opioid and asbestos exposure, making them more likely to have larger dollar value claims in …

Home Is Where The Hearsay Is: Should Zillow’S Home Value Estimates Be Excepted From The Rule Against Hearsay?, Ian L. Baumer

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the early 2000s, the real estate company Zillow released the Zestimate, an automated valuation model that turns raw multiple listing service records, tax appraisals, and other data into an estimate of a home’s value. The Zestimate has since become the public’s tool of choice to measure the value of real property. The Zestimate’s popularity has not spared state and federal courts, where litigants often invoke this tool to prove the value of real property in a variety of contexts, including criminal restitution, bankruptcy, and divorce. The use of this technological novelty has the potential to enhance litigants’ access to …

Renegotiating The “Grand Bargain” Of Workers’ Compensation: States’ Race To The Bottom And A Medicaid-Based Model For Federal Reform, Itza Mendez May 2026

Renegotiating The “Grand Bargain” Of Workers’ Compensation: States’ Race To The Bottom And A Medicaid-Based Model For Federal Reform, Itza Mendez

Vanderbilt Law Review

For more than a century, workers’ compensation has rested on a basic tradeoff: Employees surrender their right to sue employers in tort in exchange for prompt, guaranteed, and limited benefits for workplace injuries. Over time, however, the “Grand Bargain” of workers’ compensation has eroded. Across states, injured workers face sharply different benefit levels, rising procedural barriers, claim denials, delays, and cost-driven medical determinations. Yet state courts have largely declined to police the adequacy of workers’ compensation benefits, and state legislatures often face strong pressure to reduce employer costs rather than expand worker protections. As a result, injured workers have few …
