Pilot Age And Accident Rates In General Aviation: Analysis And Recommendations, Jackson E. Jolley May 2026

Pilot Age And Accident Rates In General Aviation: Analysis And Recommendations, Jackson E. Jolley

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

General aviation accounts for approximately 94% of all civil aviation accidents in the United States, highlighting the need to examine how pilot characteristics and operational factors influence accident risk. With the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) projecting continued growth in the general aviation pilot population, this study examines the relationship between pilot age, flight experience, and accident risk to inform training and safety interventions. Using the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident records from 2008–2024, along with FAA pilot registration data, we analyze age-related trends in accident likelihood, risk, and phase-of-flight distributions in general aviation operations.

Results show an approximately exponential …

Tribological Evaluation Of A Graphite Coating Using A Custom Miniature Conveyor, Shae Threlfall May 2026

Tribological Evaluation Of A Graphite Coating Using A Custom Miniature Conveyor, Shae Threlfall

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Reducing friction in conveyor systems has significant economic and environmental implications, as a substantial portion of energy losses originates at the belt-bed interface. This thesis outlines the design, construction, and validation of a miniature conveyor tribological test system. Unlike conventional tribometers, which impose concentrated point contacts, the miniature conveyor replicates the distributed load consistent with industrial conveyor systems. It can measure real-time mechanical responses of steel samples coated in a low friction coating.

The mini conveyor was validated by evaluating three materials: uncoated mild steel, PDA/graphite coated steel, and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Electrical power, temperature, sound, and acceleration were recorded. Electrical …

The Impact Of Traditional Machismo On Mental Health Outcomes: Depression And Suicide Risk Among Latino Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Men, Yesenia A, Romero May 2026

The Impact Of Traditional Machismo On Mental Health Outcomes: Depression And Suicide Risk Among Latino Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Men, Yesenia A, Romero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traditional masculine norms have long been recognized as influential factors in men’s psychological well-being. Within Latino cultures, the construct of machismo represents a culturally specific form of masculinity characterized by ideals of masculinity and characterized by ideals of strength, dominance, and emotional restraint. While these norms may promote resilience and family responsibilities, rigid adherence to traditional machismo has also been associated with emotional suppression, reduced help-seeking behaviors, and increased psychological distress. The present study conducted a meta-analysis to examine the relationship between traditional machismo and mental health outcomes among Latino men, with particular attention to depressive symptoms as well as …

The intersection of toxic leadership traits and workplace loyalty remains a critical area of study within educational administration. The purpose of this quantitative, quasiexperimental study was to examine whether a targeted educational intervention, an asynchronous online minicourse focused on the dark triad leadership traits of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy, influenced the organizational commitment of U.S. K–12 central office peer leaders. This study addressed a gap in the literature regarding proactive strategies for peer leaders, defined as coworkers in leadership positions who are not in supervisory roles over the toxic leaders. I employed a one-group pretest and posttest design to measure …

Detecting Doubt In Reflective Learning: A Learning Analytics Study With Large And Small Language Models, Eng Lieh Ouh, Kar Way Tan, Siaw Ling Lo, Yuhao Zhang May 2026

Detecting Doubt In Reflective Learning: A Learning Analytics Study With Large And Small Language Models, Eng Lieh Ouh, Kar Way Tan, Siaw Ling Lo, Yuhao Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reflective learning enhances understanding, especially when instructors promptly address difficulties raised in student reflections. Automated doubt detection can reduce time for instructors, yet existing classification approaches take substantial time for manual annotation and model training. This paper investigates whether large and small language models (LLMs, SLMs) can automate doubt detection without time-consuming training. Using a dataset of anonymized student reflections, we evaluate zeroshot, few-shot prompting, and multi-step reasoning against prior supervised classification baselines. We show that LLMs (GPT-4o, Claude-4, Gemini-2.5) surpass earlier F1 scores without prompting, while prompting further improves their performance. However, using proprietary LLMs can raise cost and …

Personality Characteristics Of Emergency Nurses And Their Subjective Fit In The Emergency Department, Jose Michael Maria May 2026

Personality Characteristics Of Emergency Nurses And Their Subjective Fit In The Emergency Department, Jose Michael Maria

Theses & Dissertations

Nursing workforce challenges in the United States persist despite widespread recruitment and retention efforts, and the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated shortages, turnover, and workforce instability. Despite interventions such as residency programs, financial incentives, and organizational initiatives, long-term retention remains inconsistent, particularly in high-demand settings like emergency departments. Ongoing issues such as overcrowding, rising patient acuity, and workforce attrition contribute to burnout, compassion fatigue, and compromised patient outcomes, perpetuating a cycle of staffing strain. Grounded in Person–Environment Fit theory, this research proposes that aligning emergency nurses’ personality traits with the specialty practice environment, the emergency department, may offer a more …

Market Reactions To Deceptive Language In Fake News: Implications From Language Expectancy Theory And Transfer Learning, Ka Chung Ng, Ping Fan Ke, Ping Fan, Mike So, Tam, Kar Yan May 2026

Market Reactions To Deceptive Language In Fake News: Implications From Language Expectancy Theory And Transfer Learning, Ka Chung Ng, Ping Fan Ke, Ping Fan, Mike So, Tam, Kar Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has heightened the proliferation of fake news. A key challenge is the limited real-world data to investigate the societal impact of fake news produced by generative AI. In this paper, we examine stock market reactions to financial news articles that exhibit stylometric similarity to human-crafted and AI-crafted fake financial news. Grounded in language expectancy theory, we employ a style-based transfer learning model, pre-trained to recognizing deceptive language employed in various types of fake news intricacies. We then apply this model to a comprehensive dataset of financial news, assigning a “veracity style score” to …

Optimisation Of Photosensitive Recording Materials For Broadband Holographic Optical Elements, Michael Murray May 2026

Optimisation Of Photosensitive Recording Materials For Broadband Holographic Optical Elements, Michael Murray

Doctoral

The introduction of broadband (white) LED outdoor lighting has led to significant energy savings. However, this has come at the cost of increased light pollution which has negative impacts both on ecological systems and human health. This light pollution is largely the result of the lack of control measures for the directionality of the light emitted by outdoor LED lighting. The lack of directionality also results in higher energy consumption in order to compensate for the light scattered to the atmosphere and sufficiently illuminate the target area. In this thesis holographic optical elements (HOEs) are proposed as a complementary technology …

Political Costs And Strategic Corporate Communication, Christine Cuny, Jungbae Kim, Mihir N. Mehta May 2026

Political Costs And Strategic Corporate Communication, Christine Cuny, Jungbae Kim, Mihir N. Mehta

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

When subject to public scrutiny, do firms strategically use advertising to reduce expected political costs? Advertising can ease public concerns, thereby reducing the pressure on politicians to act harshly against scrutinized firms and their industries. We use repeated congressional testimony by industry members as a novel way to identify political scrutiny. Our central finding is that scrutinized industries increase their advertising spending 132 percent more in the electorates of politicians overseeing the hearings than in the electorates of other politicians. Further, strategic advertising is complementary to income-decreasing accounting choices and a substitute for lobbying. Overall, our study sheds light on …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study scrutinizes how the Tianzhu Road in the Lingyin Community - a peri-urban area in Hangzhou ringed by a cluster of temples that constitutes a distinct spiritual enclave - has been reworked through a two-phase gentrification process driven by the spiritual aesthetics and platform logics. Drawing on a two-month ethnography and media content analysis, this study conceptualizes spiritual gentrification as a spiritual aesthetics and culture-oriented recalibration of urban space in which spiritual elements operate as symbolic capital, attracting culturally motivated entrepreneurs and aligning the spiritual atmosphere with slow-life values as an alternative to urban modernity. In particular, platform urbanism …

A Stress-Induced Digital Escapism Framework For Understanding The Link Between Stress And Problematic Social Media Use, Hwajin Yang, Frosch Yi Xuan Quek, Xiu Hui Salin Yap, Yue Qi Germaine Tng, Gilaine Rui Ng May 2026

A Stress-Induced Digital Escapism Framework For Understanding The Link Between Stress And Problematic Social Media Use, Hwajin Yang, Frosch Yi Xuan Quek, Xiu Hui Salin Yap, Yue Qi Germaine Tng, Gilaine Rui Ng

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Given that stress is a significant risk factor for problematic social media use, understanding the underlying psychological mechanisms is essential. We introduce the Stress-Induced Digital Escapism (SIDE) framework, which posits that negative internal emotional responses to external stressors may increase reliance on maladaptive emotion regulation strategies that fail to alleviate distress. These processes may, in turn, strengthen escapism motives that lead to seeking emotional relief through compulsive social media use. Using structural equation modeling (N = 238), we examined three integrated psychological pathways—negative stress reactions, maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, and escapism motives—as sequential mediators linking external demands to problematic social …

Research "Junkification" Is Caused By Researchers, Not Journals, Simon Sebastian Groome, Jose C. Yong, Norman P. Li

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Concerns about declining research quality have increasingly been framed as “junkification,” whereby academic output expands in volume while declining in epistemic value. A recent paper by Rhodes and Linnenluecke (2025) attributes this trend to changes in publishing, arguing that research quality erodes as journals and publishers become increasingly oriented toward output quantity and metrics, driven by monetization. In 2009, Nobel Laureate James Watson remarked that scientific publishing in the mid-twentieth century was both easier and of a higher standard than today (Web of Stories, 2017). If publishing is much easier of late, as Rhodes and Linnenelucke (R&L) argued, then how …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Project Wolbachia is a vector control method that releases male Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes to curb dengue transmission in Singapore. While research has primarily focused on its efficacy, few studies have examined public opinion. This study draws upon the cognitive miser model and scientific literacy model to examine the factors shaping public support for Project Wolbachia. A nationally representative door-to-door survey was conducted in Singapore (N = 1,000) using multi-stage stratified random sampling. Our findings revealed that while knowledge about Project Wolbachia explains public support, laypeople may often rely on cognitive shortcuts, such as value predispositions, media attention, and pre-existing perceptions, …

Patterns In Awareness And Uptake Of The Lpa Among Older Adults In Singapore, Paulin Tay Straughan, Emi Loh, Shu Fang Ng, Yi Wen (Chen Yiwen) Tan, Wensi Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Findings from a survey with 7910 Singapore Life Panel members reveal that awareness of the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) was relatively high, but actual uptake remained low, with only one in three having made an LPA and pronounced gaps among lower socioeconomic groups. Despite this, attitudes towards LPA were generally positive, with perceived benefits centered on peace of mind and reducing burdens on family members. A major barrier to adoption is the misconception that children automatically have the legal authority to make decisions if parents lose mental capacity. Structural and psychological barriers, including cost, complexity, and limited guidance, further …

Like A Rolling Lychee, George Meng May 2026

Like A Rolling Lychee, George Meng

Theses

I grew up in Shanghai, China—a megacity with over 25 million people. I was privileged enough to avoid the grueling fate of taking the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao). At 16, I moved to Sewanee, a small college town in rural Appalachia with a population of only 3,000. Overshadowed by that curiosity was the collision of two worlds and my sense of belonging and identity. I wasn’t fully aware of how I watched and copied others’ behaviors and mannerisms to blend in as an adolescent. Being a minority in the middle of nowhere Tennessee meant I was conditioned into fitting …

Saying What The Law Might Be? Courts, Geofence Warrants, And The Fourth Amendment Labyrinth, Ciara Lavin May 2026

Saying What The Law Might Be? Courts, Geofence Warrants, And The Fourth Amendment Labyrinth, Ciara Lavin

Cardozo Law Review

Since 2016, Google has received thousands of geofence warrant requests from law enforcement, requesting Google to scan through its vast database of users to identify who and what devices entered into, or exited out of, a set of coordinates in a specified period of time. Several cases began making their way through the federal courts to delineate the legality of such warrants—with challenges spanning the vast amount of data they search, their relative accuracy, and whether they comported with the Fourth Amendment. Then, in the summer of 2024, two federal appellate courts handed down decisions just weeks apart: the Fourth …

Rising global temperatures are likely modulating parasite-host interactions, yet the direction and magnitude of these changes remain uncertain. Rarely are these interactions viewed from both a host and parasite perspective. Using both CTmax, or Critical Thermal Maximum, and Clark-type polarographic oxygen microelectrodes, the physiological metabolic effects are investigated. CTmax is examined in Common Shiners, Luxilis cornutus, and is shown to be modulated by parasitism: uninfected fish had the highest CTmax average of 37.0°C, whereas heavily infected fish had decreased CTmax averaging 35°C. Prior to the parasite metabolic investigation, a suitable medium was determined, as …

Renewal: Connecting The University Campus To Improve Student Success, Micah L. Wood May 2026

Renewal: Connecting The University Campus To Improve Student Success, Micah L. Wood

Architecture Theses

The modern university increasingly faces many challenges such as competition to get and maintain students, relevance in a digital world and beyond. But what if we take a deeper look into how the built environment influences and has potential to improve student success. To do this, we must understand one of the main reasons campuses still exist beyond education, which is community. Most things that can be achieved from a university could be received in a digital format, but human connection is increasingly important. It is important to realize that, through the built environment, we can help empower campus communities. …

Are Anti-Corruption Sanctions The New Fcpa? A Comparison Of The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, The Foreign Extortion Prevention Act, And Sanctions, Karen Peters-Van Essen

Faculty Law Review Articles

With the rise of globalization, international corruption has been linked to a host of economic and social ills, including inter-state conflict.  By 2021, the U.S. government had identified corruption for the first time as a national security threat that required a broader range of inter- and cross- governmental policy tools to address the identified scope of the problem.  This national security focus was reinforced with the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which has been seen as being facilitated by corrupt oligarchs.  To be sure, the U.S. had decades prior passed the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits U.S. businesses …

Growing Older Across Time And Space: The Impact Of Various Forms Of Capital On Social Support Networks Among Older Vietnamese Migrants, Hien Thi Nguyen, Lukasz Krzyzowski, Loretta Baldassar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Much has been written about the important role of social support networks (SSNs) for the well-being of older adults, encompassing their social, emotional and practical needs. Less is known about what happens to the SSNs of older people when they migrate, and even fewer studies have examined the impact of different forms of capital on these networks. Drawing on ethnographic interviews and participant observation with 22 older Vietnamese migrants in Australia (2020–21), this paper explores the influence of different forms of social, cultural, economic and symbolic capital on their SSNs. Data analysis comprised egocentric social network analysis of the connections …
