Religion And Political Orientation: An Examination Of Intolerance, Tyler Campbell Dec 2023

Religion And Political Orientation: An Examination Of Intolerance, Tyler Campbell

Research Papers

With the recent upsurge in challenges to the public’s ability to speak in certain settings, the presence of various college curricula, and the inclusion of certain books in public libraries and schools, the contemporary political climate demonstrates a need to look at intolerance. Using the Stouffer (1955) battery of intolerance data in the General Social Survey (GSS), we examine the relationship of religious affiliation, religiosity, and political orientation with intolerance. The analyses shows that fundamentalist religious denominations exhibit intolerant attitudes more than other denominations. Likewise, the analyses indicate a positive relationship between higher religiosity and intolerance. Unexpectedly, political moderates showed …

Winter Energy Costs & High Interest Rates Affecting Granite Staters; Most See Housing As Serious Problem 12/1/2023, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Granite Staters say they are worse off financially than a year ago and report struggling to afford basic necessities and paying winter energy costs. However, New Hampshire residents are slightly more optimistic about their future finances and the overall business conditions in the state. Most say they have been impacted by rising interest rates, and that high interest rates have made them less likely to purchase a car. Nearly three-quarters of residents feel that affordable housing is a serious problem in the state and Granite Staters most often attribute this issue to a lack of supply, greed, and out of …

As global communication and digital technologies continue to advance, the traditional paradigms of language learning must expand to include critical skills that enable learners to navigate and engage with the multifaceted media environment in the target language. In this context, media literacy emerges as a fundamental component of foreign language education, not only fostering linguistic proficiency but also emphasizing the significant role of analytical capabilities essential for discerning, scrutinizing, and interpreting information and disinformation as presented …

對話與競争 : 嘉靖前期官刻古文選本的多重面向, Yi Zhang Dec 2023

對話與競争 : 嘉靖前期官刻古文選本的多重面向, Yi Zhang

嶺南學報 Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

It is generally believed that the content and ideas of government-publishing guwen anthologies should be consistent with the literary and academic styles established by the state. In the context of the imperial examination culture of the first and middle Ming dynasties, government-publishing anthologies of guwen were often produced as a complement to the state-level education system. However, the influence of the “archaist movement” at the time of Hongzhi and Zhengde, and the revival of the engraving industry during the Jiajing period, the literary style and ideological tendencies of this period showed a certain departure from the traditional Cheng-Zhu orthodoxy. …

Mosquitoes are a known public nuisance and can vector various diseases. Historically, New Orleans, LA, has long been acquainted with the burden of mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria and yellow fever in the 20th century and West Nile virus in the 21st century. Government mosquito control awareness campaigns have been around for decades as has the use of organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides by mosquito abatement districts. However, few data are available on public perception of mosquito control and public usage of insecticides to kill mosquitoes in New Orleans. We conducted a survey from August 2020 to July 2021 to evaluate …

Droid: Dose-Ranging Approach To Optimizing Dose In Oncology Drug Development, Beibei Guo, Ying Yuan Dec 2023

Droid: Dose-Ranging Approach To Optimizing Dose In Oncology Drug Development, Beibei Guo, Ying Yuan

Faculty Publications

In the era of targeted therapy, there has been increasing concern about the development of oncology drugs based on the “more is better” paradigm, developed decades ago for chemotherapy. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated Project Optimus to reform the dose optimization and dose selection paradigm in oncology drug development. To accommodate this paradigm shifting, we propose a dose-ranging approach to optimizing dose (DROID) for oncology trials with targeted drugs. DROID leverages the well-established dose-ranging study framework, which has been routinely used to develop non-oncology drugs for decades, and bridges it with established oncology dose-finding designs to …

Increased Lipogenesis Is Important For Hexavalent Chromium-Transformed Lung Cells And Xenograft Tumor Growth, James T.F. Wise, Kazuya Kondo

Faculty Publications

Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is a known carcinogen and environmental health concern. It has been established that reactive oxygen species, genomic instability, and DNA damage repair deficiency are important contributors to the Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis mechanism. However, some hallmarks of cancer remain under-researched regarding the mechanism behind Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis. Increased lipogenesis is important to carcinogenesis and tumorigenesis in multiple types of cancers, yet the role increased lipogenesis has in Cr(VI) carcinogenesis is unclear. We report here that Cr(VI)-induced transformation of three human lung cell lines (BEAS-2B, BEP2D, and WTHBF-6) resulted in increased lipogenesis (palmitic acid levels), and Cr(VI)-transformed cells had an increased …

Self-Reflections Through A Screen: Self-Identity, Social Media, And Psychological Well-Being, Jeremy J. Serio

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Social media use among emerging adults is assumed to be related to a variety of negative psychological outcomes and has, in recent years, become a widely studied phenomenon (Kim, 2017, Pew Research Center, 2018). Despite the widespread assumption, the results from empirical studies of the effects of social media use on mental health in this population have been inconsistent and inconclusive (Keles et al., 2020, Yang et al., 2021). Several meta-analyses (e.g., Keles et al., 2020) demonstrate these inconsistent results across studies and point to the need to consider individual difference factors when researching this issue. Different self-identity styles have …

Policy For A Singular Neurodevelopmental Disorder: A Multiple Streams Analysis Of The Combating Autism Act Of 2006 Using Kingdon’S Framework, Michelle C. Fong

Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) Theses

The Combating Autism Act of 2006 (CAA) is a single-disorder law for the population with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), one of six neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). All NDDs have common origins, overlapping symptoms, and lifelong adverse individual and societal impacts. Yet, no analogous policy exists for the other NDDs. The inequity between related disorders is a curiosity, and moreover, it results in health and economic inequities with devastating consequences. This analysis examines the conditions that led to the CAA, which has been reauthorized three times since 2006 and is now known as the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support (CARES) …
