Role Of Identity In Peace Process: A Re-Interpretation Of The Islamic Heritage, Yasmine Z. Radwan Dec 2023

Role Of Identity In Peace Process: A Re-Interpretation Of The Islamic Heritage, Yasmine Z. Radwan

Future Journal of Social Science

Reviewing the Western theories and ideologies on building and maintaining peace reflected in the conflict management and resolution in practice always indicates an imperative need for another perspective that could play an integral role in the international society. Regardless of the continuing call for an Islamic contribution in this field on the part of some Western scholars, the Muslim society itself based on a specific culture and a distinctive identity requires a different approach with particular tools that could fit its epistemological model. Exploring this approach, which is the main concern and the main aim of this paper, would never …

On The Duty Of Uncivil Disobedience: Thoreau's Action From Principle, Alan F. Garcia Dec 2023

On The Duty Of Uncivil Disobedience: Thoreau's Action From Principle, Alan F. Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the uncivil disobedience evident in some of Henry D. Thoreau’s work, which is often regarded as the birth and foundation of what is today known as “civil disobedience.” Using the nature of Thoreau’s subtle language and his philosophy of action from principle in his writings, including “Resistance to Civil Government” (1849), Walden (1854), “Life Without Principle” (1863), “A Plea for Captain John Brown" (1859), and some of his real life actions, this thesis will examine the antagonistic and, perhaps, uncivil nature of Thoreau’s so-called “civil disobedience.” This thesis will also incorporate Sophocles’ play Antigone (441 BBC), Candice …

Fandom And Activism: Experimenting With Memetic Communication Appeals About Human Rights Issues During The 2022 Winter Olympic Games, Alicia Mason, Elizabeth Spencer, Tricia Combs, Tanner Glenn, Brooklyn Peterson, Isaac Lewis, Emerson Tice

Faculty Submissions

In the sports context, activism is a popular focus of inquiry. In fact, scholars have posited that sports present an ideal platform for human rights and political activism and protest (Agyemang, Singer, & DeLorme, 2010; Coombs & Cassilo, 2017; Kaufman & Wolff, 2010). This study aims to analyze the persuasiveness of memetic communication in the global sports context by investigating the influence of exposure to social advocacy memes on issue importance and general attitudes toward global human rights. This experiment relied on MTurk participants in an online experiment using Qualtrics software hosted by the Communication Research Lab at a Midwest …

Prevention Of Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries: A Quality Improvement Project, Monika Grzelczak

DNP Projects

Significance and Background: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) continued to rise, costing the healthcare system about $ 11 billion annually. Medical device-related pressure injuries (MDRPI) account for about 10% of HAPI. They are also noted to be on the rise, especially in the Intensive Care Units (ICU), where multiple medical devices are placed on patients for monitoring and treatment. An intervention to reverse those unfavorable trends is needed. Evidence supports poster education to improve rates of MDRPI.

Purpose: This quality improvement project was conducted to eliminate incidents of MDRPI in the ICU and improve nurses’ perception of the importance of preventing …

Charecterizing Modern Russian Subversive Tactics In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Madeleine Dotson Dec 2023

Charecterizing Modern Russian Subversive Tactics In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Madeleine Dotson

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

Although often overlooked, Bosnia and Herzegovina presents a relevant case study of how Russian subversive tactics, particularly disinformation campaigns, can influence domestic politics. Of the variety of subversive tactics used in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia’s social media and disinformation campaigns have remained the most effective and reflect a broader, global trend. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, social media use increased worldwide. Thus, Russia took advantage of that rise in social media usage and the rise in far-right conspiracy theories to increase its foothold in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Russia has played on local concerns about EU ascension by questioning the EU’s true …

Can Superman Save The Supreme Court After Dobbs? Using Analogical Reasoning To Teach The American People The Superpower Of Stare Decisis, Brandon Stump Dec 2023

Can Superman Save The Supreme Court After Dobbs? Using Analogical Reasoning To Teach The American People The Superpower Of Stare Decisis, Brandon Stump

Cleveland State Law Review

In this Article, I propose that in this post-Dobbs America, if Americans are ever able to believe in, or even understand the magnitude of the Supreme Court’s power, practitioners, scholars, and educators should rely on the power of analogical reasoning, something attorneys are taught beginning their first weeks of law school. Using the power of analogy, we should take the simple story of Superman to explain the magnitude of the power held by the Supreme Court and the critical role that stare decisis must play in the Court’s decision-making. Perhaps if we explain legal principles and the judiciary by …

Putting The Brakes On California's Emissions Standards: An Analysis Of The Legal Challenges California's Advanced Clean Cars Ii Standards Will Face, Michael Maloof Dec 2023

Putting The Brakes On California's Emissions Standards: An Analysis Of The Legal Challenges California's Advanced Clean Cars Ii Standards Will Face, Michael Maloof

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note discusses the legal implications of California’s Advanced Clean Cars II vehicle-emissions standards. These standards, which would affect vehicle model years 2026 through 2035, seek to eliminate the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles in favor of only selling electric, zero-emission vehicles. In light of the Supreme Court’s recent decision in West Virginia v. EPA, this type of “generation-shifting” plan stands on broken ground due to the applicability of the Major Questions Doctrine. The agency action here—EPA approval of a Clean Air Act §7543 waiver—is exactly the type of “extraordinary case” that the Court must strike down in order …

Traffic Monitoring System, Elizabeth Suda Dec 2023

Traffic Monitoring System, Elizabeth Suda

Honors Projects

The Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) was implemented at the Bowling Green Flight Center as a pre-planning traffic volume tool for flight instructors to utilize when deciding on a safe location for a training event. The TMS allows the instructor to pre-determine a location during the preflight planning stage that provides the best traffic separation, rather than finding out once airborne that an designated flight training area is overcrowded leading to greater collision hazards. The Traffic Management System has provided Bowling Green Flight Center pilots and instructors with greater situational awareness of traffic and increased safety margins in flight training.

At Noon: (Post)Nihilistic Temporalities In The Age Of Machine-Learning Algorithms That Speak, Talha Issevenler

Publications and Research

This article recapitulates and develops the attempts in the Nietzschean traditions to address and overcome the proliferation of nihilism that Nietzsche predicted to unfold in the next 200 years (WP 2). Nietzsche approached nihilism not merely as a psychology but as a labyrinthic and pervasive historical process whereby the highest values of culture and founding assumptions of philosophical thought prevented the further flourishing of life. Therefore, he thought nihilism had to be encountered and experienced on many, often opposing, fronts to be fully consumed and left behind. Thus, just as Nietzsche captured the subtle reinventions of nihilism in new forms …

Economic Governance And Violence: A Cross-National Analysis, Steven Mccain Dec 2023

Economic Governance And Violence: A Cross-National Analysis, Steven Mccain

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding how economic governance influences routine activities is crucial within the field of criminology to better understand how grounds for violence emerge. Literature of cross-national studies concerning the effects of economic governance has recently developed to study its relationship with violence, specifically homicide. However, there is a deficit of frameworks related to criminological theory in this literature. Using a routine activity framework, the current dissertation seeks understand how different degrees of economic governance in general and, more specifically, the five areas of economic governance – size of government, legal system and property rights, sound money, freedom to international trade, and …

That Thing Ain't Human: The Artificiality Of "Human Authorship" And The Intelligence In Expanding Copyright Authorship To Fully-Autonomous Ai, Ernest Oleksy Dec 2023

That Thing Ain't Human: The Artificiality Of "Human Authorship" And The Intelligence In Expanding Copyright Authorship To Fully-Autonomous Ai, Ernest Oleksy

Cleveland State Law Review

The U.S. Copyright Review Board (the "Board") decided that works entirely created by fully-autonomous artificial intelligence ("AI") are not entitled to copyright protections. The Board based its decision on a copyrightability requirement referred to as “human authorship.” However, the Copyright Act of 1976 (the "Act") never mentions a “human” requirement to copyright authorship, nor do most of the Board’s cited authorities. Denying authorship to intellectually-impressive and economically-valuable works under a poorly-established legal subelement is antithetical to copyright law’s history and to Congress’s constitutional mandate to “promote . . . [the] useful [a]rts . . . .” It leaves creators who …

Continuous Authentication Using Human-Induced Electric Potential, Srinivasan Murali, Vighnesh Sivaraman, Huadi Zhu, Ming Li, Wenqiang Jin, Tianxi Ji, Pan Li

Association of Computing Machinery Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Most terminal devices authenticate users only once at the time of initial login, leaving the terminal unprotected during an active session when the original user leaves it unattended. To address this issue, continuous authentication has been proposed by automatically locking the terminal after a period of inactivity. However, it does not fully eliminate the risk of unauthorized access before the session expires. Recent research has also investigated the feasibility of using physiological and behavioral patterns as biometrics. This study presents a novel two-factor continuous authentication that explores a new form of signal called human-induced electric potential captured by wearables in …
