Uniquely Tailored Ionic Materials For Implementation In Energy, Imagining, And Antibacterial Applications, Amanda Jalihal
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, the novel class of ionic materials is explored. Ionic materials are easily tuned and tailored to fit a wide variety of applications. The synthesis of ionic materials is extremely simple and prompt. Briefly, two ionic moieties are joined electrostatically through a double displacement resulting in a new compound without complicated synthesis. This process leads to a close proximity of the ions which allows for enhancement of the FRET mechanism between a fluorophore and chromophore. A potential application of a FRET active ionic material is explored as a photosensitizer using IR820 and Nile Blue A. The ionic material, …

Overcoming Foreign Language Anxiety In An Emotionally Intelligent Tutoring System, Daneih Ismail
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Learning a foreign language entails cognitive and emotional obstacles. It involves complicated mental processes that affect learning and emotions. Positive emotions such as motivation, encouragement, and satisfaction increase learning achievement, while negative emotions like anxiety, frustration, and confusion may reduce performance. Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) is a specific type of anxiety accompanying learning a foreign language. It is considered a main impediment that hinders learning, reduces achievements, and diminishes interest in learning.
Detecting FLA is the first step toward reducing and eventually overcoming it. Previously, researchers have been detecting FLA using physical measurements and self-reports. Using physical measures is direct …

Information security in data storage and transmission is increasingly important. On the other hand, images are used in many procedures. Therefore, preventing unauthorized access to image data is crucial by encrypting images to protect sensitive data or privacy. The methods and algorithms for masking or encoding images vary from simple spatial-domain methods to frequency-domain methods, which are the most complex and reliable. In this paper, a new cryptographic system based on the random key generator hybridization methodology by taking advantage of the properties of Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) to generate an indefinite set of random keys and taking advantage of …

In information security, fingerprint verification is one of the most common recent approaches for verifying human identity through a distinctive pattern. The verification process works by comparing a pair of fingerprint templates and identifying the similarity/matching among them. Several research studies have utilized different techniques for the matching process such as fuzzy vault and image filtering approaches. Yet, these approaches are still suffering from the imprecise articulation of the biometrics’ interesting patterns. The emergence of deep learning architectures such as the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been extensively used for image processing and object detection tasks and showed an outstanding …

This thesis explores perception through ambiguous mixed-media sculpture in order to create the potential for people to question their assumptions of what “is.” Judgments, categorization, and assumptions are big parts of the ways we make sense of our world. Often, we’re wrong about them. This artwork is created in response to the lifelong experience of existing outside the lines – the experience of breaking social rules and the desire for others to realize the potential for multiple truths.
