Elevidys: A Novel Gene Therapy For The Treatment Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Reese Weissenfluh, Joshua Boggs, Elizabeth Sartschev, Allison Provenzale, Marisa Petrunich, Brianna Lu, Joshua Honaker, Claire Marasco

Pharmacy and Wellness Review

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a severe muscle-wasting disease caused by dystrophin gene mutations. DMD occurs in one of 3,500 male live-born infants and has one of the highest prevalence of severe congenital myopathies. Two ongoing clinical trials have contributed to the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) accelerated approval of Elevidys (delandistrogene moxeparvovec), a promising drug to treat DMD. Elevidys, a recombinant adeno-associated viral (rAA V) vector-based gene therapy, gained FDA approval based on findings from the ENDEA VOR trial (NCT04626674) and EMBARK trial (NCT05096221). The phase 1 ENDEA VOR trial focused on evaluating changes in dystrophin …

Oxidation Of Ethanolamine By Potassium Permanganate In The Presence And Absence Of Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate: A Kinetic Study In An Acidic Medium, Dayo Latona

Makara Journal of Science

The kinetics of ethanolamine oxidation by acidified KMnO4 was investigated in the absence and presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was investigated using a pseudo-first-order kinetics approach, with [ethanolamine]o >> [KMnO4]o. The measurements were conducted at λmax = 525 nm using an ultraviolet/visible-1800 Shimadzu spectrophotometer. The stoichiometry showed that 2 moles of KMnO4 were consumed by 5 moles of ethanolamine in the aqueous medium. The reaction orders in both the aqueous and micellar media remained the same with a first-order dependence on [KMnO4] and [ethanolamine] and a fractional-order dependence on [H …

Could Ernest Boyer’S Foundational Perspective Of The Scholarship Of Teaching Help Save Faculty Librarians?, Douglas Wayman Dec 2023

Could Ernest Boyer’S Foundational Perspective Of The Scholarship Of Teaching Help Save Faculty Librarians?, Douglas Wayman

The Christian Librarian

This is a recovery project for Ernest Boyer's scholarship of teaching as presented in Scholarship Reconsidered. It addresses a reinterpretation of Boyer’s scholarship of teaching promulgated by his Carnegie successor, Lee Shulman and popularized throughout the Academy. Serendipitously, that reinterpretation gave birth to what is now known as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), which has undoubtedly benefitted the Academy. While this project focuses on the reinterpretation's ramifications for tenure-track academic library faculty who teach, it also argues that the foundational interpretation of Boyer's model could benefit the Academy at large, and that the two interpretations are not mutually …

Global Ethics, Religious Liberty, And Freedom Of Information Access, Paul A. Hartog Dec 2023

Global Ethics, Religious Liberty, And Freedom Of Information Access, Paul A. Hartog

The Christian Librarian

Devout Christians work in a spectrum of library settings (including public libraries), networked by globalized information access. By nature of their employment, these librarians assist patrons in accessing and retrieving information that challenges or conflicts with a biblical worldview. How can one defend taking such an active role in this seeming contradiction? This article maintains that Christian commitment may not only co-exist with the freedom of information access but may also support it as a universal human right in our globalized, pluralistic context. To make the case, the essay contrasts two varying accounts of Global Ethics (differing in their view …

The Christian Librarian

Since the beginning of this century, academic libraries have been at the forefront of book digitization and access. During this same period, many individuals have made the transition from reading printed materials to reading on screens. This change in reading habits has led to profound shifts in how libraries conceive their mission, how they structure their spaces, how they organize their resources, and where they allocate funds in their budgets. These changes have been reflected in the Library and Information Science literature, which now includes a rich corpus of research on the impact of digitization on librarians and library services. …

Sirtuin 6 Activation Rescues The Age-Related Decline In Dna Damage Repair In Primary Human Chondrocytes, Michaela E. Copp, Jacqueline Shine, Hannon L. Brown, Kirti R. Nimmala, Oliver B. Hansen, Susan Chubinskaya, John A. Collins, Richard F. Loeser, Brian O. Diekman

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

While advanced age is widely recognized as the greatest risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA), the biological mechanisms behind this connection remain unclear. Previous work has demonstrated that chondrocytes from older cadaveric donors have elevated levels of DNA damage as compared to chondrocytes from younger donors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a decline in DNA repair efficiency is one explanation for the accumulation of DNA damage with age, and to quantify the improvement in repair with activation of Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6). After acute damage with irradiation, DNA repair was shown to be more efficient in chondrocytes from …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Water Use And Nutritional Value For California Commodities, Helen M. Lee, Giselle A. Pignotti, Kasuen Mauldin, John Gieng Dec 2023

A Comparative Analysis Of The Water Use And Nutritional Value For California Commodities, Helen M. Lee, Giselle A. Pignotti, Kasuen Mauldin, John Gieng

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

To create a more sustainable food system, this study analyzed the water use and nutritional data for California commodities. The data were separated into quadrants based on median scores, with results that include a list of commodities lower in agricultural water use while being higher in nutritional value. Because the agricultural sector is the dominant water user, there is an opportunity here to influence growers, consumers and policymakers to choose and support the growth of foods that would reduce water consumption while still providing beneficial nutrients. The goal of this paper is to educate the public on this important issue.
