Evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted international student communities while reflecting wider societal inequalities. This study in the Finnish context examined international students’ experiences of the published national crisis communication and media usage during the first year of the pandemic. Using the national COVID-19 crisis communication practices as an example, we examined what kinds of strategies the international students deployed to access information in this non-English-speaking country and how they perceived the information communicated. Theoretically, we based the analysis on the theories of crisis communication and information inequality, which identify communication practices, such as language choice, that …

Reclaiming & Reasserting Third World Womanhoods In U.S. Higher Education, Bhavika Sicka

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

This study combines narrative inquiry with Third World feminism to bring a nuanced and scopic perspective of Third World women student experiences in US higher education. Specifically, it utilises Talpade Mohanty's concept of Third World womanhood to visibilise the experiences of five Third World international female students. Understanding womanhood as transnationally fluid and contextual, I investigate how women international students from the Third World perceive themselves to be misrepresented or homogenised in Western higher education. I also examine how gender and foreignness act as dynamic, interrelated categories in doubly‐othering this population. The purpose is to identify how Third World women …

Selvitys Valtakunnallisesta Apurahajärjestelmästä Ja Valmistumisen Jälkeisistä Kannustimista, Anna Idström, Eetu Isotalo, Tuomas Hiilamo, Hannu Karhunen, Charles Mathies, Jusso Villanen

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

Tieto mahdollisesta apurahasta tulisi näkyviin opiskelijalle opiskelijavalinnan pisteytyksen rinnalle jokaista hakukohdetta koskien. Ehdotettu malli ei ota kantaa apurahan määrään tai muihin ehtoihin, vaan säilyttää autonomian korkeakouluilla.

On epätodennäköistä, että kansainvälisten opiskelijoiden Suomeen …

Steering The Intangible Wheel: Chief Executive Officer Effect On Corporate Cultural Change, Xina Li, Guoli Chen, Rui Shen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We provide large-scale empirical evidence of how much chief executive officers (CEOs) change corporate culture. To do this, we use employee reviews to measure corporate cultural change in S&P 1500 firms. In a variance decomposition analysis, we find a modest effect of CEOs on corporate cultural change. The effect of CEOs on cultural change is larger than industry effect but smaller than firm effect. Regression analysis in the context of CEO succession further shows consistent evidence of a modest effect of CEO succession on corporate cultural change. In addition, the relationship between CEOs and cultural change is not likely to …

Online streaming and video platforms have become a popular form of entertainment as opposed to traditional media like movies and TV shows. Similar to traditional media, viewers often relate to and form one-sided relationships with actors/creators, known as parasocial relationships. Actors and creators can then leverage that relationship to advertise and market products to their audience. The primary objective of this study was to understand if perceived credibility and loyalty towards a streamer fuel parasocial relationships and how perceived credibility and parasocial relationships with an online live streamer influence attitude towards a sponsored brand and purchasing intention. It was predicted …

Belief In War, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2024

Belief In War, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

Introductory Statement

Belief in war dominates our world. From Ukraine to Sudan to America’s ‘war on terror’, extraordinary resources are poured into militaries and arms races. The explanation for why belief in war has become prominent in foreign and security policy in Russia, the United States., China, NATO states and many other places is linked to the influence of Realist political theory. Pope St. John XXIII’s encyclical Pacem in Terris argued for honoring the alternatives to Realism – international law and institutions. It is time for an encyclical that responds directly to Realism and teaches belief in the authentic natural …

This Could Be Heaven Or This Could Be Hell: Figurations Of Urban Life In Contemporary California, Diana Turken Jan 2024

This Could Be Heaven Or This Could Be Hell: Figurations Of Urban Life In Contemporary California, Diana Turken

Open Access Dissertations

This project examines city space as a material and conceptual process within contemporary California. Concretized in differing figurations, my work investigates the urban as a distinct praxis reimagining subject and space. If California is truly a “non-canonical” landscape as Krista Comer argues, its vision of “Westness” must offer an alternate geography that, while gesturing to the West as an historical event, departs from dominant narratives to envision a counter-site somehow “west of West.” My first chapter looks to Tommy Orange’s There, There (1996). Evoking Deleuze’s theorization of the Fold, I read the novel’s depiction of Oakland as a folded configuration …

Ultrafast Dynamics Of Intrinsic And Hybrid Phonon Modes In Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors, Chandra Prasad Neupane Jan 2024

Ultrafast Dynamics Of Intrinsic And Hybrid Phonon Modes In Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors, Chandra Prasad Neupane

Open Access Dissertations

Wide-bandgap semiconductors, such as Barium Tin Oxide (BaSnO3) and Strontium Titanate (SrTiO3) are important for advanced electronic device applications. These materials offer high electron mobility and a high breakdown voltage, addressing limitations commonly found in traditional silicon-based transistors, such as low forward voltage and instability in harsh conditions. The high breakdown voltage resulting from wide bandgaps allows for operation at higher voltages, which is essential for high-power electronic devices. Additionally, wide-bandgap semiconductors exhibit significantly high electron mobility, a key factor in switching speed. For instance, BaSnO3 demonstrates electron mobility in the range of 100-300 cm …

Societal Impacts Of Harmful Macroalgal Blooms On Caribbean Communities, Kenneth Hamel Jan 2024

Societal Impacts Of Harmful Macroalgal Blooms On Caribbean Communities, Kenneth Hamel

Open Access Dissertations

Pelagic Sargassum species, long considered a vital component of Caribbean ecosystems, began to arrive on and near shore in unprecedented quantities starting in 2011; these arrivals have transformed many Caribbean people’s perspectives of these macroalgae from a native benefit to an alien invader, and are now regarded widely as a harmful algal bloom (HAB). HABs often receive attention for the ecological and economic damage they present, but other human dimensions are less commonly considered, and this is doubly true of Sargassum events. This dissertation was intended to fill increasingly pronounced research gaps by providing exploratory evidence that can be useful …
