Regulatory obligations and market trends connected to environmental sustainability issues have lately intensified their effect on the shipping industry. New standards are continuously being established, such as IMO’s 2050 aim of lowering greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 2008 levels. These rules have an impact on capital markets and on investors’ ship financing decisions. The standards now include Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) components. These are not only concerned with the environmental impact of shipping, but also with the social and governance dimensions of firms, which are typically associated with maritime transport risks, such as accidents, ship reservations, and …

An emerging area of research on automated futures is that of digital equity- how to innovate and develop digital products, services, and experiences which promote equality of access, and align with the lived experiences of communities they are expected to benefit. In this chapter, we outline a research project focused on the adoption of digital fabrication technologies by a rural community in Bridport, United Kingdom. Their challenge is that of housing futures not only in terms of stock demand, but more broadly in terms of sustainable forms of housing construction (i.e., modern methods of construction) using local materials and skills. …

Climate Change Concerns And Mortgage Lending, Tinghua Duan, Frank Weikai Li Jan 2024

Climate Change Concerns And Mortgage Lending, Tinghua Duan, Frank Weikai Li

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine whether beliefs about climate change affect loan officers’ mortgage lending decisions. We show that abnormally high local temperature leads to elevated attention to and belief in climate change in a region. Loan officers approve fewer mortgage applications and originate lower amounts of loans in abnormally warm weather. This effect is stronger among counties heavily exposed to the risk of sea-level rise, during periods of heightened public attention to climate change, and for loans originated by small lenders. Additional tests suggest that the negative relation between temperature and approval rate is not fully explained by changes in local economic …

The Effects Of Language-Related Misunderstanding At Work, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Nilotpal Jha Jan 2024

The Effects Of Language-Related Misunderstanding At Work, John Fiset, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Nilotpal Jha

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Demographic, technological, and global trends have brought the language used at the workplace to the forefront. A growing body of research reveals that language could result in misunderstanding at work, and influence employees' performance and attitudinal outcomes. Language at work encompasses standard language (e.g., English) as well as several hybrid forms of language (non-native accents, code-switching, and jargon). We delineate how these forms of language could result in misunderstanding. We then identify relational, affective, and informational mechanisms that underlie the relationship between language-related misunderstanding and employees' performance and attitudinal outcomes, and highlight key boundary conditions. In doing so, we uncover …

Market For Manipulable Information, Hui Chen, Jian Sun Jan 2024

Market For Manipulable Information, Hui Chen, Jian Sun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study how investors, firms, and information sellers interact in a market with manipulable information. To better predict the firm characteristics they care about, investors can buy a score from a monopolistic information seller, which aggregates signals that are subject to firm manipulation. The average degree of signal manipulability has no effect on the equilibrium, while the uncertainty about manipulability becomes a new source of noise. Its contribution depends on firms' incentive to manipulate the signals, which in turn depends on the equilibrium price sensitivity to the score. The optimal design of the score weighs signal precision against the endogenous …

Recovery Of Ionic Liquid From The Model Solution Mixture Mimicking The Catalytically Hydrolyzed Cellulose Product Utilizing Amberlyst Ion-Exchange Resin, Chhabilal Regmi, Chidambaram Thamariselvan, Zhexi Zhu, Xianghong Qian, S. Ranil Wickramasinghe

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The hydrolysis of cellulose using ionic liquid (IL) has been extensively studied but there is limited understanding of the removal of IL from the biomass hydrolysate. Finding a suitable method for the recovery and reuse of IL is one of the biggest challenges before its large-scale application. Selecting an appropriate combined recovery process is very important. This study proposed a facile ion-exchange combined method for the recovery of IL from the modeled cellulose hydrolysate mixture containing sugars as well as γ-valerolactone (GVL) via an adsorption–desorption mechanism using sulfonic acid cation-exchange (Amberlyst 15 (H)) resin. The results showed that the resin …

Measuring And Modeling Riparian Wetland Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity, Nutrient Concentrations And Shallow Groundwater Dynamics In An Appalachian Mixed Land Use Catchment, Bidisha Faruque Abesh Jan 2024

Measuring And Modeling Riparian Wetland Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity, Nutrient Concentrations And Shallow Groundwater Dynamics In An Appalachian Mixed Land Use Catchment, Bidisha Faruque Abesh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The paucity of research on accurate predictions of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), spatiotemporal analysis of nutrient concentrations relative to water source types (stream and shallow groundwater (SGW)), water flow directions, and land use in riparian wetlands of Appalachian mixed land use catchments underscored the need for this study. Additionally, the lack of SGW flow simulations and stream-SGW interactions using three-dimensional (3D) numerical models (i.e., MODFLOW) in these riparian wetlands further highlighted the research gap. Observed data including soil properties, Ksat, surface water (SW) and SGW levels, and nutrient concentrations, including nitrate (NO3-N), nitrite (NO2-N), ammonium (NH4-N), orthophosphate (PO43-P), total nitrogen …

Utilizing Procalcitonin As A Guide For Antibiotic Therapy In An Acute Care Setting, Kayla J. Thomas Jan 2024

Utilizing Procalcitonin As A Guide For Antibiotic Therapy In An Acute Care Setting, Kayla J. Thomas

DNP Projects

In 1928, Alexander Fleming introduced the world to Penicillin. The discovery of Penicillin, one of the world’s first antibiotics, greatly reduced the number of deaths from infections. More than 100 different types of antibiotics have been developed over the past ninety years, resulting in better treatment of diseases. However, the use and misuse of antibiotics have led to antibiotic resistance (AMR). Currently, antibiotic-resistant bacteria kill 700,000 people every year (Tarín-Pelló et al., 2022). Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker that can be utilized in the guidance of antibiotic therapy. PCT levels tend to rise in response to bacterial infections but remain …

Geopolitics And Geospatial Strategies: The Rise Of Regulatory Supply Chain Controls For Semiconductor Gpn In Japan, South Korea And Taiwan, Yuko Aoyama, Eunyeong Song, Shan-Yu Wang

Geography

In this article, we present an analysis of how East Asian states (specifically, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan) are adapting to the emerging geopolitical contexts of the 'great powers competition' between the United States and China. To the extent that the previous literature on GPN/GVC governance included the state as one of the extra-firm actors, geopolitics has not been explicitly dealt with in its role in shaping GPN/GVC governance. We build on the existing research on GPN/GVC governance and propose a shift in perspective, from one of cost-driven to diplomacy-driven governance. Taking the case of the semiconductor industry, we conduct …

Trauma As Cultural Capital: A Critical Feminist Theory Of Trauma Discourse, Lucy Britt, Wilson H. Hammett Jan 2024

Trauma As Cultural Capital: A Critical Feminist Theory Of Trauma Discourse, Lucy Britt, Wilson H. Hammett

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay theorizes a problem for feminism posed by a particular form of trauma discourse. Feminists have played an important role in developing cultural and clinical conceptions of trauma, but one result of the destigmatization of trauma has been that trauma discourse is sometimes used as a form of cultural capital to reinforce existing hierarchies. In a novel application of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of distinction, we show how, when instrumentalized as cultural capital, trauma discourse can be used to reinforce patriarchy and other systems of oppression. We trace a critical feminist history of the struggle to understand and treat trauma. …
